DAYS 1-5 (JANUARY 10-14)

A strong blocking pattern continues to keep our weather on the quiet side. This will not be changing during this 5 day period either as we see yet another storm system fail to organize while passing south of the region Tuesday, and another batch of energy fail to materialize into much as it goes by the region fairly unnoticeable by the middle of the week.

TODAY: Sun & some high clouds. Highs 35-42. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 17-24. Wind W under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 37-44. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 22-29. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Highs 37-44. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 23-30. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 37-44. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 25-32. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 38-45. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JANUARY 15-19)

Blocking pattern continues. Activity in our area increases during this 5-day period, starting with a low pressure area tracking northwest of the region, a milder day with a risk of rain showers January 15 followed by a drier/colder start to the Dr. MLK Jr. weekend January 16-17 which may end with a rain/mix/snow threat on January 18 before fair weather returns again.

DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 20-24)

Monitoring for a weakening of the blocking pattern and a somewhat more active storm track into the Northeast. A lot of uncertainties out this far.

  1. Thanks, TK…

I am noticing that the sunlight seems to be a bit brighter this morning! 🙂

    1. And I am noticing that my morning commutes to work are still just as “dark” as ever. Today’s was no exception. 🙁

  2. I believe that today begins our “coldest” stretch of the winter on average. January 10 – February 10.

Based on TK’s thoughts above, this winter will be no exception I would say.

    1. He seemed fairly gifted last night and if you watched the other regular season games he was in or when he was on the XFL (I’ve seen them all lol) he has real potential to be a starter.

    2. I sure enjoyed watching Brady last night. You don’t even have to know he is there to be able to pick him out. He is truly an amazing talent. At this point, I’d say the question as to whether it was BB or TB who made the Pats great.

      1. I think it was the Combo. I also feel that BB general manager was hindered due to cap space since the last super bowl that they maybe even the one before that. Patriots system also need the off season to be good unlike other teams like KC and TB who if you just put them out on the field they can win.
This year was never going to tell us who made the patriots 20 years of success. We will have to see what their records are like from when Brady left the patriots to when he retires and see then.

  3. TK – For the past few years now, have March and/or April been our “snowiest” months besides December?

The thought suddenly occurred to me.

    1. We can’t determine that for this winter yet. Last winter it was December. But a trend? It’s not. It’s a result of the patterns of each particular winter from year to year.

We’ll see how the rest of this one plays out. There’s a very long way to go with a lot of unknown.

  4. Thanks TK!

    My best thinking right now…

*Quiet and dry the next ~7 days
*Potential window for storminess ~1/18-1/25, which may include multiple storm threats
*Southeast ridge sets up shop near or soon after 1/25 and carries us through most of February

  5. Vicki, I also like watching Brady. He’s stupendously amazing, especially for a 43 year old. But even compared to the vast majority of QBs.

    1. Brady has great “weapons” including Gronk. His receivers were amazing last night. Plus Brady does look better athletically as well compared to last year with the Patriots.

      1. Brady has lousy receivers last year and made the best of it. They had a lousy group of first round receivers. Which brings me back to who made the pats great. 😉

    2. Joshua, I sure agree. It was a pleasure. Watching football without Mac has been hard for me since it was something we always made a big deal together ….food and watching and all of that. But boy I wish I’d watched more of Brady this year. Just an amazing athlete

      1. He is an amazing athlete. If you want to watch an incredible playoff game it’s next Sunday NO & TB this one should be a shootout. No I think smoked TB one game . Two of my favorite quarterbacks going head to head .

    1. I have family in central TX and they had a ball in the snow today! Their school district has already called a 1-hr delay for tomorrow morning. At first I was like ha ha, crazy southerners don’t know how to deal with snow. Then I thought, schools around here would probably do the same…

  6. Catching up a bit…

WxW I agree with your general thoughts on the upcoming pattern!

In reply to the football discussion above, I also enjoyed watching (through highlights) Brady’s performance. I was not one of those people who first decided when he was leaving that I was going to become a TB fan because TB was on TB. I’m still a Pats fan. But I will always be a fan of TB (as in Tom Brady) as a football player. I’d never call him a traitor or root against him in “hatred” (sports hatred), though I’d root against him if he were playing against the Pats obviously. His performance yesterday was admirable. I’d love to see him go far, even win it all. He gave us 20 great seasons. The people who just look right beyond that and hold some kind of grudge are, in my opinion, not only seeing this without reason, but also being unfair to the man.

    1. Agree. I have already said why I’m now not watching football as much. It has nothing to do with being a fan or not a fan. I do think Brady as tested horribly and anyone who knows even a bit about me understand how I react to that. I was always a Red Sox fan but rooted for the senators/rangers when Ted was manager. And guess what …he did also. Another life lesson that im just now realizing he taught me. You can have more than one team

    1. I’m not sure what being overdue for snow means. 🙂
We can go long stretches in mid winter with no snow, no arctic air, or just the opposite – we can get relentlessly hammered. This is where the longer term averages come from really. Climatology is ok, but one must be careful not to lean on it too much.

That said, I’m starting to see signs of 2 shots at flakes before too much time goes by. We’ll see how that shapes up.

  7. I have been watching Catalan TV from Barcelona. The entire newscast has been about the storm, the worst in Spain in 50 years. There has been a widespread 8-12″ snowfall in many parts of the country, with places getting up to 20″

Many schools are closed through Tuesday. The Real Madrid soccer team had trouble getting to yesterday’s match in Pamplona and are stuck there trying to get to Málaga for Tuesday’s match.

    1. Yes. Strong blocking doesn’t always mean cold & snow in New England. This time, it meant it in Spain. 😉
