DAYS 1-5 (MAY 9-13)

High pressure brings nice weather to southeastern New England for Mother’s Day, and I would like to wish all moms reading the blog today a very happy one! The rain, which has made an appearance many times on this day over the years, will be holding off until later tonight as low pressure makes a run at the region, passing through on Monday morning when the rain will come to an end. We will have a pool of chilly air aloft that has to come across the region between late Monday and sometime Wednesday, so we’ll see some cloudiness at times but minimal chance of any additional rainfall, just maybe a passing shower sometime Tuesday. By Thursday, high pressure is expected to provide pleasant spring weather.

TODAY: Sunshine followed by increasing cloudiness. Highs 58-65. Wind W up to 10 MPH morning, variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes afternoon.

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Rain arriving west to east. Lows 46-53. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Cloudy with rain ending from west to east during the morning. Clouds break for partial sun afternoon. Highs 57-64. Wind variable 5-15 MPH, becoming W during the afternoon.

MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy evening. Clearing overnight. Lows 38-45. Wind W 5-15 MPH shifting to NW.

TUESDAY: Sunny start, then lots of clouds with a passing rain shower possible. Highs 55-62. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clouds decrease. Lows 38-45. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny start, then a cloud/sun mix. Highs 57-64. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Lows 40-47. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 60-67. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 14-18)

A fair and mild May 14 before a disturbance from the west brings the chance of a few showers May 15. Generally dry weather, starting seasonable then a warming trend the remainder of the period, though by the end of the period way may see the approach of a cold front with a shower/thunderstorm risk.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 19-23)

Going with the warm-up scenario later in the 6-10 day period and a cool-down with mostly dry weather May 19-20 followed by a gradual moderation. Still fairly low confidence on the pattern this far in advance.

    Happy Mother’s Day to all!

A good soaking late tonight according to Jacob and AJ. The models showed 0.6 inches for Boston.

  4. Thanks TK !

Happy Mother´s Day to all the mom´s out there.

I think there were snow flurries last year on mother´s day.

      1. Your memories are amazing! Next Mother’s Day remind me what today’s weather was like. Unless it was an historical occurrence I rarely remember those little things. 🙂

          1. It was 2006. A stand-out rain event in a 30-year period which has actually trending slightly drier.

            1. We went to Atlantica in cobasset for Mother’s Day brunch. My oldest’s wedding reception was to be there one year later. We wanted to check the food. There were buckets all around to catch leaks in the roof. I did asked if they planned to have the leaks repaired. They did and the reception was lovely.

        1. May 9 is a favorite cousins birthday. I relate mostly to important family dates. 🙂

  5. Good morning and thank you TK.

Wishing all WHW Moms a very Happy Mother’s Day. Wishing a great day to Mom’s of those on WHW and a loving remembrance for those who have lost Mom’s.

  6. Thank you TK!
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Moms out there! One of the toughest, but by far the most rewarding title to have. 🙂

  7. Thanks TK and Happy Mother’s Day all!

This was the scene at my house before daybreak on May 9th exactly one year ago….

That melted but then later in the afternoon, the snow squalls came and I took this video….

Between the two periods of snow we picked up an inch. Pretty wild.

It had melted by the following morning, May 10, which was actually Mother’s Day but it was still a blustery cool and mostly cloudy day as I recall.

    1. Last year at this time was so grim and horrifying, snowflakes were the last thing on my mind, as much as I like snow. Just being able to get some rolls of toilet paper was first and foremost.

    1. Thanks Captain. Amazing how the CT River Valley got shadowed. It happens even in the depths of winter as well.

      1. Not sure they got shadowed, more likely an elevation issue
making the boundary layer just a bit too warm for snow.
Tk or other mets here can confirm or not.

  8. Thanks TK. Happy Mother’s Day to the moms! 🙂

The upcoming warming trend in the East could be good news for me. Why? I’ve got a storm chasing trip planned to the Plains from late next week through the following week. It’ll be my first time ever out in that part of the country, though luckily will be with a couple friends who do have experience with it. Warmer East usually means cooler West, and the battle zone in the middle is where the fun happens 😉 Right now I like the way things are looking, thinking we’ll get at least 2 or 3 good chase days. Hopefully I’ll have some good pictures to post!

  9. May 1977 was very elevation dependent in most of the region. The CT Valley situation was elevation-related. Some of the “lower” elevations areas, like my area, still got significant accumulation just due to intensity/timing.

  10. For rainfall amounts tonight / Monday AM, my current thinking is around 0.25 inch N of I-90, around 0.50 inch I-90 southward.

Not a great producer and probably the last one for a while.

      1. That already happened from recent events. It improved. But it’s not going to stay that way. We’re going dry again.
