  1. This is very confusing. A third vaccine is full dose and a booster is not? Or what? How do we know what we are getting when we go to the pharmacy or what we are supposed to get? Topol said a while ago that this is a third vaccine and not a booster. I have always referred to it as such. But most call it a booster.

    Joshua??? Help please

    1. All I know is I got 3 needles jabbed into my arm of the Pfizer vaccine at different intervals for my protection against COVID-19. I believe some medical professionals are making it more complicated than it needs to be.

I guess me and Pfizer are going to be at least an “annual” ritual for the rest of my life forward along with the flu vaccine. Maybe every 6 months? Sigh.

      1. According to this as I read it, a booster is not full strength and a third vaccine is full strength. Since these are all new and some have last minute full approval, I definitely want to know what is going into my body.

  2. JPD, just curious. Will you resume handing out candy for trick-or-treaters this year? Dr. Wollensky of the CDC has officially gave her blessing.

Frankly my concern are a bunch of kids at indoor parties moreso. A number of homes in my neighborhood will be hosting them from what I can tell.

  3. Vicki, it’s my understanding that a booster is simply the same dose, for a 3rd time.

Room for cautious optimism in the UK, as the increase in coronavirus cases appears to have stalled. Only 3 days worth of data. Worth watching. Nevertheless, hospitalizations are at their highest point in 7 months (963 in one day), deaths (263) highest number in 7 months, too.

Meanwhile, as I thought would happen, Western Europe is now seeing a surge in cases. Probably some spillover from Central and Eastern Europe. The resurgence is in full swing. In the Netherlands, hospitalizations are rising leaps and bounds every day; essentially doubling every 10 days. Test positivity has doubled in 14 days. It is now 15%! https://twitter.com/D_Anderson_UK/status/1453021149156233216

    1. Oddly, Johns Hopkins, Cleveland clinic, and others mention booster and third vaccine with some subtle differences. Both of their links discuss the two separately.

    2. Thanks Joshua. Just as I thought, medical professionals making unnecessary complications. In the end, these vaccines will be annual shots just like the flu has always been.

Too bad though it can’t be once in a lifetime at birth or as a toddler. Oh well. I guess COVID-19 will “never” be eradicated from this planet, as if we don’t have more than enough diseases already.

      1. Never mind. I was thinking they smartened up and eliminated the 80%. Silly me. We have right around 2000/week positives. The 80% is working really well 🙁

    1. Hi Vicki. Yes, the first 2 doses were the same for Moderna (100mcg) and Pfizer (30mcg). I believe the Pfizer booster/3rd dose is the same, but Moderna’s is 50mcg.

  4. Dutch released their vaccination status report: 84% of >18 are fully vaccinated; 81% >12 are fully vaccinated. Yet, cases there are really exploding now and hospital admissions are rising very sharply, too.

Known for their no nonsense and sober-minded approach to life, epidemiologists there are MUCH more cautious than scientists here.

Top epidemiologist Patricia Bruijning of the UMC of Utrecht stated: “The predictions about how quickly the virus would circulate and the number of hospital admissions were way too optimistic.”

Like her colleague Professor Tostmann, she thinks the surge is due to in part to lack of mitigation: People aren’t distancing, aren’t staying home when sick, aren’t masking, and are entering crowded spaces without proper ventilation.

She’s also concerned about the sub-lineages.

Why do I hear none of this from our epidemiologists, or the Biden Administration? Why is Topol silent on this, for example? Why are epidemiologists once again shrugging off what’s happening in Europe as if it’s not coming here? I don’t get it. To be mistaken once, okay. But, to be mistaken multiple times when there’s plenty of warning … ignorance, blithely optimistic about something that’s deadly serious.

The ONLY thing I hear about from American epidemiologists this week is … vaccinating 5-11 year olds.

    1. I honestly don’t know what is wrong with people. Yes, our leaders are not being vocal, and that is wrong. But why the heck do we have to be told what to do when we know darned well what the answers are. Life isn’t back to even close to normal….yet people are acting as if it is.

      1. True.

Had an in-person meeting today with a CEO from an Irish company. He got an exemption to fly here. Travel from Ireland is still barred until the 8th of November. I had hoped we could do our business outdoors (I’m trying to get a project off the ground, with his company’s financial support, so it’s important I meet with him – I’ve had many Zoom meetings). Alas, weather intervened. Because of the rain, we had to venture indoors at a cafe. Well, the place was absolutely packed. More mobbed than it was pre-Covid (I know because I used to go there often). Hardly a mask in sight, except for the workers. And no distancing whatsoever. The tables were literally inches apart, as well as customers. Gosh, I think they added tables and pushed them CLOSER together than before. Even without Covid, it would have felt unnecessarily crammed. I don’t want to brush elbows constantly with a person I don’t know. With Covid it’s an even more uncomfortable feeling. Oh well.

        1. Are there any set rules for restaurants in Boston with regard to masking/distancing? Did you and your guest have to show proof of vaccinations to enter?
Do you think any (updated) city of Boston mandates were violated Joshua?

          1. No checks of any kind. No sign on the door. Some patrons had masks on, but none did at their tables. Servers had masks on. Not sure if anything then counts as a violation, other than the patrons who didn’t wear masks when coming into the restaurant. But, there’s no enforcement.

If anything I felt like there may have been a fire code violation, as it was really crammed together with tables.

  5. I just received an email update from my health care provider regarding the shot vs. booster, and it seems there IS a difference. I wish the medical community would make up it’s mind. TMI!!!! Sigh.

  6. Interesting. I just discovered that these clinical trials for the children 5-11 are conducted using only “healthy” ones. There is little or no consideration for those with underlying health issues.

Joshua, have you heard about this?

    1. No, have not.

By the way, Belgium (85% of the >12 fully vaccinated) is experiencing an even worse wave than the Netherlands:

      – 75% increase in cases in 1 week
      – 69% increase in hospitalizations in 1 week

Green passes (proof of vaccination or proof of negative test) will now be required virtually everywhere. Masks, too, as well as distancing, some capacity limits being reintroduced as well. Rules will remain in place for the duration of the winter.

And, we think we’re just going to avoid the next wave in the Northeastern U.S. … Doubtful. If we do, I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong.
