DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 21-25)

High pressure slides offshore today with low pressure passing north of our region tonight and early Friday, bringing its warm front / cold front combo across the area. This will be more a cloud and breeze producer than any rainfall, which will be limited to the chance of a brief shower this evening. High pressure builds in southeastern Canada and extends an arm down into our area to bring fair weather Friday night into the weekend, but as a warm front tries to approach the region and struggles, we’ll see a varying amount of cloud cover over the weekend, especially Sunday as it looks now, when we may see it generate a little bit of light rainfall at some point. I’m cautiously optimistic the front gets a push from a shift of high pressure to our east Monday which may allow for a brief warm up on that day…

TODAY: Mostly sunny morning. Mostly cloudy afternoon. Highs 58-65, coolest coast. Wind SE-S 5-15 MPH, higher gusts in the afternoon.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy evening with a slight chance of a brief shower southern NH / northern MA. Clearing overnight. Lows 46-53. Wind SW 10-20 MPH shifting to W.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 62-69. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 45-52.Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 57-64, coolest coast. Wind N to variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 37-44. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Sun followed by clouds. Chance of light rain late. Highs 57-64. Wind variable to SE up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of light rain/drizzle. Lows 47-54. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 63-70, cooler coast. Wind S-SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 26-30)

Frontal system and low pressure area brings shower chances April 26. Some atmospheric blocking slows progression of systems and may prolong unsettled weather until later in the period.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 1-5)

Blocking pattern potential with near to below normal temperatures, near to above normal precipitation at least early part of period. Block may break down later in the period with zonal flow returning.

    1. Spring is our windiest time of year.

The basis of that is we often have decent upper and mid level winds at a time of year when we have a higher sun angle and better mixing of the atmosphere, so we get a lot of episodes of gusty wind. We also see a lot of dynamics (cold air aloft, instability, storm systems) contributing to the frequency of events. Spring is the most volatile season with generally the greatest potential temperature and weather ranges from nearly mid winter conditions to nearly mid summer conditions. In the autumn, except maybe September, it’s rare to have mid summer heat and it’s extremely rare to have mid winter cold (except maybe in November like Thanksgiving a few years ago). With less volatility in autumn, we tend to have less wind. Summertime, significant gradient wind is not frequent since we don’t see too many dynamic systems, and in winter, while we have plenty of dynamics and gradient, we also tend to settle under larger anticyclones with lighter winds for periods of time and there is also overall less variability than the spring.

    2. Sure is windy today. I mention wind regularly on here. I do enjoy it. Between tacking down umbrellas and trampolines and pool tubes and reindeer and snow tubes and my deck buddy air blows, I honestly cannot recall a period of late and prior to before late that has not been windy. I have been very grateful I purchased a propane fire bowl a year ago. I don’t have to worry about embers blowing in the wind

  1. Rooting for Miggy to get his 3000th hit. He’s been hitting the ball well lately. Got 3 hits yesterday. He’s at 2,999. Aaron Boone intentionally walked him today in the 8th – depriving Detroit fans of a chance of seeing him hit number 3,000 – and I am SO happy it backfired (next guy got a base hit).

Cabrera is such a great hitter. To watch him hit – he and Manny Ramirez – is such a joy: Balance. Technique. Never over-swing. Use all fields. I will miss him when he retires.

  2. I saw this headline in a New Hampshire newspaper

Spring in New England: Blow, blow thou northwest wind….
