  1. I had my bout with Covid in early July and now my wife and daughter both got it this week. My wife survived not getting it when I had it and through 4 people at work in early August! She is on day 3 of her symptoms and hopefully turns the corner this weekend. She didn’t test positive until yesterday, My daughter is essentially better except for the cough which lasts longer.

When I had and now this week when they both had it, we didn’t test positive until day 3 of symptoms (from what I understand the first day is considered day 0). So that essentially could be 2 days where you could be infecting others, if you think it is just a cold or fall allergies before the fever kicks in. A bit concerning.

    1. I hope your wife recovers quickly. Glad your daughter is on the mend.

The long plateau we’ve been on is a reminder that Covid is still around and may indeed intensify somewhat as schools return next week.

    2. Oh no North. I’m so sorry to hear this. Please tell Ivy and your daughter I hope they feel better very soon.

  2. Undoubtedly you’ve heard about the monkeypox death in Texas. The good news is that deaths are very rare with monkeypox, at least thus far. While Belgium also recorded a death yesterday, worldwide, since May, the total number is 17. Of course, death is not the only important indicator. It’s estimated that globally around 6% of monkeypox cases wind up in the hospital.

The most vulnerable – to hospitalization and death – folks are the immune-suppressed. For example, a 36-year-old man in Italy appears to be the world’s first documented case of being diagnosed with Covid-19, monkeypox, and HIV at the same time.

    1. Excellent article. Very clear and well written as always.

In the same breath….it is an Horrifically sad article. Whatever happened to Biden and universal healthcare? Good grief, we have a taste of it and it is yanked away. And what the hell would possess him to give Covid ANYTHING to private insurance companies.

Personally, I can tell you that even in Massachusetts that supports Medicaid, if you are self employed, healthcare coverage is horrific.

    1. Well I guess this isn’t unprecedented to have so much descend on us at once. We did have a great flood. And then there were locusts and a few other plagues. Ten in all if I recall. And the world was a mess with lies and deceit and divisiveness when those occurred. Sooooo…….

Lest anyone think I’m kidding…,,.maybe so. But I’m starting to get very worried.

      1. I am worried too, Vicki. Even climate change. Ok, maybe we did that to ourselves. In any case, it is all weird. And scary.

        1. Hi Rainshine. You are right to add climate change. We did do it to ourselves. But then we also did do a lot of Covid to ourselves by the same mishandling/divisiveness

  3. There has been frequent prime time tv ads regarding “Comirty” by Pfizer which is targeted specifically for teens 12-15 to fight Covid-19.

Joshua, have you heard of this drug?

  4. Joshua, would you say that the fall into the winter months are the absolute key to ending the pandemic once and for all?

The upcoming BA.5 Omicron vaccine can’t come soon enough!

    1. Considering mask mandates have been discontinued for months now, a little bit too late, I would say. 😉

Of course I am still required to wear a mask at work. Based on my travels, there is only one business that I know of within the greater Boston area that still requires masks of its customers.

  5. Phillip, now I understand your question yesterdat about the vaccine that begins with a “C,” Comirnaty. Almost no-one uses the brand name of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. And so it’s confusing when you hear it. I was confused, too. It’s simply the brand name of the vaccine. I don’t believe they’ve changed the name of the brand for this new booster.

You’re right about there being prime time ads – which is really good; I wish this had happened more before – for the booster. With football season upon us and millions viewing it would be good for this to continue.

  6. Vicki, it’s not entirely Biden’s fault – or his Administration. Congress holds the purse strings. The Administration would like to extend coverage through Medicaid for folks who will lose it. But, Congress will likely not approve of it.

This said, the Administration is really giving in to market forces when it transitions away from the government being a guarantor of universal access to tests, vaccines, and treatments. While I understand the budgetary consequences, I think it’s too early to make such a transition. I’ll be posting a separate article on this soon. It will contain the necessary nuance, as there will be certain protections for folks covered by Medicaid and Medicare.

    1. Thanks, Joshua. And I do agree and I agree there are other forces. Sadly, Biden has either been convinced or has convinced himself that Covid is under control …using that term loosely, but he has done this throughout his administration. He has then worked to convince the public of this. I suspect it has a lot of political motivation but don’t know for sure.

  7. So we get the new Omicron vaccine. What happens if a new variant comes along? Do we get another shot for that too? Covid seems to be a unique virus. I know in history there have been plagues, etc. I believe the Black Plague lasted for several years, due to fleas. But caused usually by a particular thing or things that in time we could control. Covid seems to be an “intelligent virus”.

    1. Good comment, Rainshine. The term intelligent virus seems eeerily appropriate. And like you, I understand viruses mutate.

  8. Joshua, yesterday I went to the CVS in Coolidge Corner(Brookline) at the corner of Beacon and Harvard Sts. I asked if I needed an appointment and was told to “come back at 2:15” when the person returns from lunch break, so I assume that no appointment is necessary, for now. I suspect though once the demand increases then an appointment will be necessary. The CVS further down Harvard St. has a sign stating that an appointment is necessary “online”.

  9. Thanks, Phillip, for the information. Yes, I can always schedule an appointment online.

Rainshine, SARS-CoV-2 is quite good at mutating. Faster than most viruses. The good news is there is no sign of any new variant on the horizon. Let’s hope it stays that way.

  10. Question. If the new vaccine is bivalent, is it still an mRNA. If so, is this the first attempt at a bivalent mRNA? I know flu is a regular vaccine, but have opted for the quadrivalent every year since I broke through on the trivalent for seniors a few years ago. Last year there was a new type of flu …I honestly forget what it was…..but I didn’t opt for it since it was a first year.
