Grey, Cooler Weekend

4:20PM

The weather this weekend will present itself in a more typical March fashion, mostly grey and cool. This will be due to high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south ofΒ  Southern New England. It looks like the bulk of the rainfall associated with the low pressure area will remain south of the region, which is not really great news, as we have been quite dry and fire danger has responded by reaching very high levels. This problem will likely become more prominent as much of next week also looks dry. The difference between recent and upcoming days will be that the extremely warm pattern will be gone, replaced by somewhat more seasonable temperatures.

Forecast for RI, southern NH, and eastern MA…

  1. you think there is a chance for snow next thursday ? can you tell me what models are saying that because i saw the model that was saying that kick it out to sea

  2. Very curious to see how the magnolia’s and other blooming flowers fare with the hard frost next week, which is likely to be almost every night, starting on Monday. Snow is one thing, but 22 is quite another. Any botanists out there who’d like to chime in? I don’t have an answer. My guess is they will likely fall off, and we’ll wind up having the earliest and shortest season of magnolia’s. Again, this is close to being unprecedented, as magnolia’s just don’t (full) bloom this early around here. I’m not as concerned about the leaf growth, as that is fairly minimal at this time.

    1. Magnolia news from black thumb Betty (that’s me) I did a quick search and there are some magnolias that are frost resistant. Don’t know which ones you are seeing. Any snow I would think will take out most anything with flowers unless they are covered.

      1. Thanks, Vicki. I live in Back Bay, near some rather famous magnolia trees. They do look very nice today. But, I fear that the cold next week will knock off the flowers prematurely. So, even though they came out very, very early this year, their blooming period may be quite brief. We’ll see. It’ll be an interesting natural experiment.

        1. Oh dear my guess is you are right and those were planted long before the frost free variety. You make me laugh. My son is much like you. Hikes and camps and has done app trail and loves mountains and is looking for land so he can have a getaway place off the grid BUT he lives in the city. Go figure.

          1. JC is expecting. I am going to miss seeing her while she is on maternity leave…whenever and how long that will be. I suspect fairly soon.

    1. I accidentally left her out. I have met J.C. and we are Facebook friends. I’m also FB friends with Pete B.

  3. Really!! I was just going to take the hard top off the Jeep. If we are going to get “snow” I may wait a couple of weeks.

      1. Welcome Tim! Just to be on the safe side, wait until after the first week of April to remove your hard top. πŸ™‚

  4. I also think tommorrow starts cloudy with some sun during middle part of day but then ends cloudy πŸ™‚

  5. Since we are going to be in a mostly “dry” pattern for the forseeable future, there will be virtually no chance of anything even remotely significant in terms of snow (or rain for that matter). I imagine TK would probably disagree, for me personally, if we don’t get any snow within the first 7-10 days of April, it is highly unlikely to occur again until November at the earliest. Hopefully no October snows this time around.

NWS evening discussion does mention snow showers possible for Thursday but it is not in the official local forecasts at this time. I also suspect that TK is not calling for significant snow either for now.

  6. what a night. really good food, ping pong, basket ball man hunt and campfire at my freinds percussion party..The campfire was a little close to the woods for my comfort. just luck that nothing went on fire. really good night besides for the bruise on my knee , percussion compition saturday at Melrose πŸ™‚

    1. Glad u had fun matt. I remember the music and drama parties well. Oh the stories I could tell πŸ˜†

Good luck in the competition tomorrow!

    2. Good luck today Matt!! Sounds like you had a wonderful night. You sure had a perfect night for it !!!!

  7. The air is cool and almost a bit moist…… I can smell the ocean, actually more like the “low tide smell”. This is the kind of weather I hope they get for the Boston Marathon, cool east wind with some cloud cover……..however, with the way things have been going this year, why do I get the feeling that it’s probably going to be a very warm day that’s not good for long distance marathons…..

I see on this morning’s long range GFS and EURO, that after about 8 to 10 days of coolness, the trend is for things to start moving again in the north Atlantic. The GFS has another impressive east coast ridge the first week of April and the EURO has an intense storm up over southern Hudson Bay, drawing in a surge of warmth ahead of it into The northeast.

    1. No that would not be good. I ran in 2007, just over 5 hrs with not any real running experience. I trained real hard. I crossed the finish line with my son on his birthday.

      1. Son ran last year – which was a PERFECT year. He didn’t train but runs home from work on occasion and then along the Charles. It was an absolute blast. We stationed ourselves along the route with my husband and me in Brookline by his apartment.

He did 4:35. I was nervous since he hadn’t trained but afterwards he reminded me that he hikes 26 miles a day on the appalachian trail carrying a pack for days in a row so he wasn’t worried about the marathon. Would have rather he reminded me of that BEFORE πŸ™‚

  8. What’s that saying….”couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried”

Temp anomalies for March thru March 23rd (courtesy of Taunton NWS climate data)

    Logan : + 10.7 F
    Hartford : + 11.4 F
    Providence : + 9.4 F
    Worcester : + 11.7 F

  9. Vicki I agree. I would like summer a lot better if we did not have to deal with big time heat and humidity. My perfect summer temps are 75-80. At least we do get breaks from the heat and humidity unlike the deep south in the summer. Winter, fall, and early spring when things come back to life are my favorite times of year.

    1. I’m trying to remember the year we had near 100 deg temps during April school vacation – maybe 2001 – and I thought the summer following was not bad at all but we had expected it to be. I probably made that up. I do know there have been some times that we have above avg spring temps and brace for a very hot summer that does materialize……..sometimes πŸ™‚

  10. Vicki I remember that heat wave the first three days of May back in 2001. I also remember the one back in April 2002 which led to a hot summer. The following winter was snowier than normal with the big Presidents’ Day Storm.
I would like to see statistics if early heat translates to a hot summer.

  11. The weather has been great but we could use some rain as parts of SNE have moderate drought conditions and other are abnormally dry.

  12. No sun here at all – overcast in and in the low to mid 50s.

Don’t forget a week from tonight at 8:30 is earth hour !!!

  13. Hi Emily…. Good news the latest CPC 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks have above normal temps for us. I think were done with the record breaking warmth for a while and were going to have a reality check next week.

  14. Daytime highs came in cooler than expected today, upper 40s to lower 50s. No 60s to be found, and very little sunshine, as expected, at least in Metro Boston.

A very cool and damp Sunday coming up.

    NO big warm-ups next week.

    Updating the blog now.

    1. I think most of the sun was in my area sw of Boston, we had off and in sun all day, a matter of fact for a time this morning it was mostly sunny πŸ™‚

      1. I could see the brighter sky to the SW much of the time. We squeezed in a tiny bit of sun during the last hour or so, but it was never out very long.

  15. It’s 53 here now in north Attleboro and got to 59 degrees at 1:00 before clouds came in, what a difference in weather πŸ™‚
