Wednesday April 19 2023 Forecast (7:12AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 19-23)

The lingering effect of upper level low pressure stays with us today in the form of periodic stratocumulus clouds with cold air aloft. Surface low pressure far to our northeast combined with high pressure to our southwest will send a westerly breeze across the region with a cool feel, especially when the sun isn’t shining. High pressure nudges closer tonight and Thursday then offshore Friday with fair and milder weather conditions. A warm front will move through ahead of approaching low pressure Saturday as a trough moves into the Midwest and Great Lakes. This broad low pressure circulation will send a cold front into the region later in the weekend when wet weather chances will then increase. Although with a fairly narrow area of rain it will be difficult this many days in advance to time the wettest weather, so for now just a general forecast for a showery Sunday will appear below.

TODAY: Intervals of clouds and sun with clouds most dominant early morning from the NH Seacoast through eastern coastal MA to Cape Cod, a sunnier period following that while lots of clouds appear in western portions of the forecast area early-mid morning then spread eastward. Highs 53-60. Wind W 5-15 MPH, a few higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Clouds linger evening. Clearing overnight. Lows 28-35 cold spots, 35-42 most other areas, mildest urban centers. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sun and patchy clouds. Highs 63-70 except potentially cooler in some immediate coastal areas. Wind W up to 10 MPH with local coastal sea breezes developing.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 42-49. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 60-67, coolest coast. Wind E-SE 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 50-57. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 55-62 South Coast / Cape Cod, 62-69 elsewhere. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of a shower. Lows 50-57. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Cloudy. Showers likely. Highs 57-64. Wind SE 10-20 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 24-28)

Uncertainly in the forecast to start next week as to how quickly the weekend system departs, so there may be additional rain chances April 24 before a break with dry/seasonable weather, then more unsettled and cool weather later in the week as the next low pressure trough moves in from the west.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 29 – MAY 3)

Overall idea remains a regime of cool and occasionally unsettled weather with a trough dominating our weather. Doesn’t mean a period of nicer weather can’t occur too – will just have to work on the timing details as it all gets closer.

    1. Perhaps a wee bit better last night. Today marks day 16 of being sick. This one really hung on. Thank you for asking.

  1. Thanks TK.

Nice comeback by the Celtics! They have got to get out of the habit of being down by double digits early (-11) especially with a clearly inferior opponent.

I have noticed that the Bruins generally take control of the game from the beginning regardless of the opponent. Hopefully they continue that trend tonight.

  2. Thanks TK and thanks Vicki and Tom for the birthday wishes.

Got my free Starbucks beverage this AM…I made sure it was a Venti with extra shots of espresso. The one time of the year I try to get the drink cost as high as possible. I was able to get it up to $8.50 but my heart is beating like a jackrabbit now with those 4 shots of espresso 🙂

JJ and South Central – Happy belated birthday to you both as well. Hope you had a good day!

  3. Just a bit of melting left to go on Mt Washington….

MWO brought together several of our valued summit partners (and their families) for an overnight at our weather station last week. The spring snow wall created as the Mt. Washington Auto Road clears the Cragway section (at about 5,000 ft. in elevation) was just one of the stunning Mt Washington scenes.

  4. Thanks TK
Happy Birthday Mark! Will see if your Islanders even the series tonight against the Hurricanes.

    1. Thanks TK and JJ.

Islanders need the game tonight if they are going to make it a series. Should be another low scoring game….Islanders just need to stay out of the penalty box. Special teams killed them in Game 1!

JJ – nice game by the Rangers last night. Was expecting more of an effort from the Devils but they didn’t even show up.

  5. The road team won 6 out of 8 game one matchups in round 1 of the NHL playoffs.
The Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins were the only home teams to win game 1.

  6. Mark great start by the Rangers. They went up 2-0 in the first period and took the crowd out of it. Maybe the Rangers could actually win a series and it won’t go seven games. I am not getting all excited just like I wasn’t all excited about the Knicks winning game one in Cleveland and this going to be an easy series win. I fully expect the Devils to bounce back like the Cleveland did last night. At worst just like the Knicks the Rangers will be 1-1 coming back home.

  7. Boston has a west wind and it’s 49F at 1pm on April 19th.

Max Sun angle today: 59 degrees.

    49F ………

  8. On my run I overheard children, who were on their recess break in the Esplanade Park, complain about how cold it is. With the temperature at 49F at the time (it’s warmed up a bit since then), a rather gusty wind, and situated along the Charles, it did feel coldish. Who knows, it may at times feel that way until June. But of course we know what often happens then as Boston goes from marine cool to tropical hot. It’s often sudden and the marine cool usually exits for a couple of months before another distinct feeling of cool – a pre-autumnal morning chill periodically appears. I perceive the spring and pre-fall cool very differently.

    1. If I recall that summer 1976 turned out to be quite hot. I wonder if this summer will end up more on the cooler side of normal?

    2. Yep, 4/19/76 was the day I was born and the hottest April day in recorded history at Hartford (96) until the record was tied this past Friday.

  9. I really dislike Upper Level Low Pressure systems this time of year. The day starts out so brilliantly clear but then the gray and gusty chill ruin it.

  10. Already 2 days of 90 or higher recorded at BDL for the year. Is this an omen for a lot of 90 or higher days this summer??? Time will tell.

  11. this is not weather related but scientific. I been part of a major collaboration with scientists around the Caribbean and east coast and our paper just came out.
Last year I observed long spined sea urchins dying. At first I didn’t think anything of it as it was only a couple, but then more people started to report it. The next thing we know we had a mass dieoff event similar to the early 80s. ( though we only had about 21% of the pre 1980 populations)
Long story short, we found a ciliate a micro-organism was connected to the dieoff event of 2022.
Here is the link if anyone is interested.

    1. Matt. It is nice to see you. But this is very sad news. I will read the paper this evening. What amazing work you are doing. Doesn’t surprise me a bit though as I know it has always been your passion and you perform your work so well

  12. Sorry to hear about what has happened to these sea urchins. Great job to you and all the scientists for discovering the cause.

  13. Thank you TK!
Happy Birthday Mark, I hope it’s a fun filled one, sounds like you got a jump start on it already with that Venti.
After those couple of days in the 90s at the end of last week, today’s 40s sure feel raw, as I stand outside of my son’s baseball practice.
