Thursday May 4 2023 Forecast (7:10AM)

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 4-8)

Two more days until the upper low leaves us alone – for now (keep the last 2-word phrase of that sentence in mind for beyond the 5-day period). Today, it’s the coolest of the lot, surface low to the southeast, upper low still overhead, northeasterly air flow at the surface, grey sky, patchy drizzle, a few showers, and below normal temperatures – as you’ve heard me say recently: in the dank tank! But not long from now improvement will begin. Friday, both upper and surface low pressure areas will be to the east of the region, pulling away, and while the sky will still be filled with plenty of clouds, drier air working in from the north will start to break them up with the sun chance going up as we move through the day, especially by late day. We’ll be rid of the wet weather and we will be subtly milder (or less chilly). Our weekend as well as Monday look fabulous with dry air dominating the weather as the low will be far offshore by then and high pressure will build in from the west. There will still be enough cold air aloft for diurnal fair weather clouds to pop up Saturday, so I’m not expecting a totally sunny day, but the two days that follow it should feature basically unlimited sunshine. A nice warming trend will take place during this time as well.

TODAY: Mainly cloudy. Patchy drizzle and a chance of passing showers. Highs 46-53. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Patchy drizzle and a slight chance of a shower. Lows 40-47. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Slight chance of a passing shower. Highs 51-58. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy early, then clear. Lows 41-48. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Sunny start, then a sun/cloud mix. Highs 61-68. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Lows 43-50. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Sunny. Highs 68-75 except cooler some coastal areas. Wind NW up to 10 MPH with some coastal sea breezes.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 48-55. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 70-77 except 60s some coastal areas. Wind W up to 10 MPH except some coastal sea breezes.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 9-13)

Our old pal, the upper level low pressure area (yes the one over us now) may retrograde – aka move westward – far enough to push a back door frontal boundary into our area before the middle of next week, thwarting the warm-up and altering the flow so that a series of disturbances approaching from the west during the period are shunted just to the south, but still close enough for some episodic unsettled weather. Will sort out the details as we get closer.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 14-18)

Low confidence forecast here given the uncertainty in the period preceding it. Going drier/milder to start, then a cooling trend to return, but an overall mostly dry pattern.

  1. I know, I know, it’s just the weather, etc. etc. etc., but, on my daily routine and at my retail shop, it’s easy to see the negative impact this same old same old gloomy crap had on people. Sure we go on living our lives to the fullest, but at some point all most people want is a little bit of sun and warmth. So glad to hear we should be seeing that for a string of days starting Saturday. It’s clear though, this is the stuff that contributes to New Englanders being so hearty!

    1. And I still say people waste a lot of energy letting something that they can’t control bring them down. There are fixes for all of it. 🙂

      1. You know I agree. There has been so much natural beauty the last few days. Just look up.

        1. The sky has been amazing. And other things.

You’ll be seeing it again in photo form soon. 🙂

          1. I will watch for your pictures.

The little white flowers have blown off of the pear trees lining the neighborhood ….at times it looked like snow …but flowers on various other trees in the yard are now out. Natures timing always impresses me.

    1. It is impressive that three generations after its release are still enjoying Star Wars. My grandkids…even the youngest six year old….know more about it than I ever did. The 11 year old had a Star Wars theme for her birthday last month and are anxious to watch the just released new young Jedi adventure

  2. Today’s forecast from somewhere in New England (not hard to guess):

An area of low pressure over the mid-Atlantic will continue to produce snow across the higher summits Thursday. Snow showers will decrease in intensity overnight Thursday and end by Friday morning as this low pressure system tracks southeast away from the region. Sky conditions will then start to clear by the end of this forecast period as high pressure builds toward New England. The higher summits will remain under the influence of this low pressure system Thursday, with an additional 1-3 inches of snow accumulation possible during the day.

The summit has already received around a foot and a half of snow over the past few days. Shifting winds may continue to move recent snowfall, creating deep drifts along with poor visibility above tree line.

    1. In recent days, Mark had mentioned the snows hitting West Virginia and some other places.

    2. Yes, Mount Washington has certainly had its fair share of wintry weather week this as well. The Jefferson snow patch may be sticking around till July again this year!

    3. Thank you. This is news that gives my brother a smile. I’ll share with him tonight. He is beyond tired of hospitals and rehabs so anything positive is appreciated

      1. Swagger often leads to cockiness which brings a player (or a team) back down to earth quickly. This will catch up with TBR. At least the Bruins were not cocky. Unfortunately, though, they were just not a better team than their opponents in round 1. But, as I ALWAYS say, and very few people ever remember, there is a reason we don’t just hand a team a series or a championship based on how they have been. They play the games for a REASON. That’s the entire point.

        1. The Bruins were the better team, however, they just didn’t play up to their potential, thus making them not the better team for that series. Funny how that goes.

          1. Exactly. The better team based on the regular season, and definitely “on paper”, but as I like to say, “paper” doesn’t play hockey. 😉

Florida was a better team than the Bruins when their playoff life depended on it. And you know what? CONGRATS to that team. They earned it. As disappointed as I am as a Bruins fan, I’m also the first to tip my hat to the Panthers. And they’re already up 1-0 (winning game 1 on the road) over Toronto. You’d better believe I want them to win their second series. 🙂

  3. I’m paying very close attention to the RRFS runs, still in trial mode, for performance evaluation in an operational use sense across various patterns as we head through the spring and so far I like it.

Next up is to test if it has the partial sunshine correct into the Boston area before the end of the day today.

    1. Did you spend time in the Stocks?????

I must admit, we did one time. 🙂
Then had a drink in a nearby pub.

    1. Yes, Vicki I am. I do not frequent the restaurant as much as I did in its heyday. I walk the shore and pass by it every day. I half believe it’s the rain and half believe it’s about rising seas. Maybe both.

All structures along shores are of course at some risk these days. The company that owns it also has Mission on the Beach (Revere) and the newest one, Mission Boathouse (Beverly). The latter is right on the water too. You can bet the owners are checking that right now.

      1. I agree that it is probably both. We used to go to a restaurant in swampscott when I was young. Cannot recall name though

  4. Speaking of someone who certainly wasn’t cocky, Frank Howard. “Hondo,”‘ as they called him, hit mammoth blasts. Yet, he trotted around the bases with no swagger whatsoever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsq_3ZiVLl8

Then there’s Reggie Jackson. Swagger, and he definitely backed it up.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0a6KHdbDD0&t=4s

I loved watching both Hondo and Reggie play, by the way. One of my first trips to Fenway as a very young lad – 5 – featured Mr. Howard. We had seats near the Washington Senators’ dugout. I remember being in awe of Hondo. He was immense.

Reggie Jackson scared the you-know-what out of me. I learned to respect him, though and saw him club quite a few homeruns at Fenway, including what turned out to be the game winner in the 1978 playoff.

    1. Howard played for the senators and then rangers when Ted was manager. He went to dinner with us one time when the team was playing the Red Sox. He was as kind as kind could be.

  5. Well, it’s really too bad the Bruins lost to the Panthers. But, this Panthers team is red hot. They won the first game of the second round on the road, and are winning the second. Keep in mind, too, the Panthers were a very hot team down the stretch, and they won the President’s Trophy last year. It may very well be the case – though we’ll never know, given that it’s a hypothetical – that had the Bruins faced any other team in the first round, they would have won.

      1. Coaching was what lost the Bruins the series. Ullmark should have been pulled earlier in the series in favor of Swayman. At least that is what I’ve been hearing from the local tv sports anchors and pundits. I had no idea that Ullmark was hurt all this time.

        1. That loss is not on coaching. Yes, I agree that going with Ullmark over and over was probably a mistake, but the Bruins defense was non-existent. And even their offense was not performing on all cylinders. It was a team loss, not a coaching loss.

Local TV sports anchors and “pundits” don’t know any more than most fans – they just get paid to sound smart.
