Sunday May 14 2023 Forecast (7:30AM)

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 14-18)

Dry times continue. You may recall some number of days ago when this period of time was further out, I prognosticated a dry pattern with temperatures dependent on wind direction. Well, here we go with that. Today’s going to be about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday on a fresh northerly breeze behind a cold front that went through otherwise unnoticed. But still a very nice Sunday for Mother’s Day, and I wish a happy one to all moms reading this! Some high cloudiness may filter the sun at times today, this being the northern edge of a heavier cloud shield to our south as well as some streaming in via the Great Lakes region. A few fair-weather cumulus clouds may also pop up during the day. The Canadian high pressure area that delivered the brief cool shot will slip southward and turn the wind back to west and southwest Monday and Tuesday, when we’ll experience a warm up. Another cold front dives out of Canada and crosses our region with no more than a brief shower Tuesday evening, and puts us back into a cool air mass for Wednesday and early Thursday, but the next temperature rebound occurs quickly by Thursday afternoon as our dry weather / up-and-down temperature pattern continues. Of note, while leaf-out somewhat mitigates brush fire danger, it’s still somewhat present due to the dry weather and often breezy conditions. Use extreme caution with any open flame or anything outside that can spark a brush fire. They can spread quickly!

TODAY: Partly cloudy but still plenty of sun. Highs 63-70. Wind N 5-15 MPH, gusts around 20 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 45-52 but may be a touch cooler in normal chilly spots. Wind NW 5-15 MPH early but diminishing.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 70-77. Wind W increasing to 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 51-58. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of showers late in the day. Highs 71-78. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Chance of a shower early. Lows 45-52. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 58-65. Wind N 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 28-35 interior lower elevations, 35-42 elsewhere, mildest in urban centers. Wind NW up to 10 MPH, diminishing.

THURSDAY: Sunny. Highs 67-74. Wind W increasing to 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 19-23)

The warm up extends into the end of the week with fair weather on May 19. Current timing suggests a cold front will swing through the region early in the May 20-21 weekend with a quick shower threat and a return to seasonable temperatures and mainly dry weather for the balance of the weekend, then continued dry weather and a warm-up early the following week (May 22-23).

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 24-28)

The first part of this period looks a little wetter and cooler with a trough in the region, but we may quickly return to a dry regime right after that.

  1. Celtics game is on ABC/Ch. 5 @ 3:30.

What time will Jason Tatum show up? 😉

Which ghost shows up at TD Garden? 1981 or1982?

With the Red Sox floundering lately, we could sure use a Celtics win today. The Revs lost yesterday as well.

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

Reached 80 here yesterday. Currently 56.
    Ocean back down to 54.86

  3. Celtics are 7-9 in their past 16 home playoff games. Gotta love home court advantage. 😉

  4. Thank you, TK.

Happy Mother’s Day to all. TK, please give you mom a huge hug from me. ❤️

  5. Last year in this round the Celtics were down 3-2 to the Bucks won game six on the road and game seven at home.

  6. Thank you, TK!

Happy Mothers Day to all moms, step-moms, nanas and all who fill that maternal role! Thank you!

Happy Mothers Day, Mom! I love you!

I was able to get workers here yesterday to powerwash our filthy home. Raynham has already imposed restrictions on watering. I think that it won’t be long before Taunton (and other muncipalities) impose outright bans. There are small patches of our lawn that are starting to turn brown, believe it or not!

The greatest Celtics game (and one of the greatest sporting events I have ever watched) for me is the triple-OT Boston win against the Pheonix Suns in 1976, Game 5 of the NBA finals.

  7. The Celtics are 26-9 all-time in Game 7. The 26 wins, 35 games, and .743 winning % are all NBA records.

They are 21-4 at home in Game 7s.

They are 5-2 all time against the 76ers franchise (including a win against their predecessors the Syracuse Nationals) in Game 7s

They are 5-1 in Game 7s since 2017.

    1. She’s very well, thanks! 🙂

We had a little brunch that I brought home after I did her grocery shopping, which I did after I took care of my brothers dog. 🙂

She’s now off visiting great grandchildren with my brother. A little later I’ll bring her to the rehab for a visit to my other brother, then she wants to get an errand or two done. I will oblige, because even though she shouldn’t have to think about errands on mother’s day, I know getting them done will make her happy, and in the end, that’s what it’s all about today. 🙂

  8. Thank you, TK.

    Happy Mother’s Day!

I was about to write some of what SAK wrote regarding the Celtics, but SAK beat me to it. The Celtics are indeed very good in Game 7’s. And that includes the current era (Tatum, Brown, Smart, etc …).

    1. Canada is going to have a lot of cool air to supply the Northeast into early summer, if not right through the season, despite recent warmth up there. That’s temporary, as was the circulation-driven warmer water in recent days, which is already cooling back down now.

  9. Captain you bring up something we are trying to figure out. Our lawn took a hit with a complete water ban last summer. Especially the front jean that we had just redone and was looking great at the start of summer.

Do we put $$ into another failure and hope there is no ban this year? It makes me quite nervous that some towns are already taking precautions

  10. Temps are generally under-achieving today, 4 degrees off the forecast high at Boston so far, and 5 degrees away from it currently.

    1. 63 here in JP. To be fair, your range was 63-70. I think you did just fine, plus there are a couple of more hours for it to tic a tad
      higher. 🙂

        1. Actually, while TKs forecast is not underachieving, the actual temp is. Still in a long sleeved tee, it is a cool 70. And I love it

  11. TK – Will “western” sections of Canada continue its hot regime? If I understood Eric correctly, wildfires are pretty much going to be around much of the summer out there, messing up our own skies from time to time.

    1. My early idea is that they will be under high pressure ridging more often than not so they will probably have a pretty long fire season.

  12. Beautiful day. We’ve had many this spring. I’m grateful.

Feeling much better today than yesterday.

TK, happy to hear about your Mom. Nice she’s able to have three generation (!) visit today.

    1. Very true. This is a 10!

BEAUTIFUL out! Comfortable as well, even though the actual
temperature here is 65! LOVE IT!!!!

  13. Vicki, thanks for your reply yesterday. I really can’t complain — I think I had the world’s mildest case…

    1. I’ll quote myself from a couple days ago: “It won’t be close”. 🙂

  14. There we go. Late-day surge of downslope warming just as the core of the cool air exits, boosting the temp several degrees at Logan. Right in the middle of the forecast range now.

  15. made 68 in jp. 65 now. currently in line at dairy queen quincy. short sleeve shirt and very comfy.

  16. Wednesday night / Thursday morning: I think the only areas that don’t go below 40 are Logan, the heart of downtown Boston, and some immediate coastal points. Some of the normal cold spots will have low temps that are below freezing, maybe even starting with a “2”.

With the core of the cold right over the region for Thursday AM min temps and a quick recovery, some areas may have 40 degree diurnals on Thursday.

    1. To my southwest Norwood is often a cold spot. To my northwest I think Bedford tends to be a cold spot.

I’m thinking I might get to 40F. I’ll try and bottle the air and release it periodically throughout the long, hot summer ahead.

By the way, TK, I hope you won some money. Your Celtics prediction was spot on.
