Sunday January 21 2024 Forecast (7:44AM)

DAYS 1-5 (JANUARY 21-25)

A little bonus snowfall for some areas is now history as a trough moving through the region over-produced, with expected flurries / snow showers becoming a general snowfall for a few hours, with minor accumulations. Now we have a bright, breezy, and cold Sunday with high pressure in control. This high will shift to the south Monday with a temperature moderation and continued fair weather. A stronger high pressure area settling across eastern Canada on Tuesday will send a frontal boundary southward through our region, returning chilly air to the region by late in the day. At the same time, an area of moisture will approach from the west, and as the frontal boundary hangs around just to the south and attempts to push back to the north, we can expect a period of snow and possible ice Tuesday night. This should taper off with just some lingering liquid precipitation of the light variety on Wednesday. There may be a significant temperature contrast across the region Wednesday depending on the position of the frontal boundary that came through the day before, as it makes an attempt to drift back north as a warm front, but is met with resistance from cold air to the north.

TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 24-31. Wind NW 5-15 MPH. Wind chill near to below 20.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 12-19. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 32-39. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 22-29. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Increasing clouds. Highs 33-40 by midday, then turning colder. Wind shifting to NE 5-15 MPH, then diminishing.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Snow likely, some accumulation, except mix/ice/rain potential I-90 south. Lows 23-30. Wind NE under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Spotty rain/ice possible. Highs 32-39 north, 40-47 south. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT & THURSDAY: Cloudy. Additional episodes of rain/ice possible. Temperatures may remain steady. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JANUARY 26-30)

Additional areas of low pressure bringing opportunities for rain/ice/snow to the region for the first few days of this period before a drying trend. Temperatures variable, averaging slightly above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 31 – FEBRUARY 4)

Another winter weather threat early to mid period. Temperatures trend colder.

  1. Good morni g and thank you TK

    Nice little surprise snow yesterday.
Near an inch herecrequiring the city salters to be out.

    15 here this mornong.

The gfs was at it again. 0z run had a big snow storm around the 28th, while the 6z run had Nothing! btw, 0z euro and canadian did NOT have it either. Struggling with various pueces of energy?
Perhaps something will come together? But I doubt it. Trend is your friend….we shall see.

    Ocean temp dowm to 41.7

  2. Watched the movie Priscila last evening. Not the greatest movie in the world, but not bad either She was heaviky involved in the production, so one would that the plot was spot on? Elvias was portrayed as a pretty violent nasty piece of shit. Some truth? sone revenge? Unless one was close to the man how woukd one ever know for sure My gut says more truth than not.

    1. Elvis was definitely easily turned to violence according to a lot of the accounts at the time. He was hot headed. It was easier to polish and make celebrities seem more upstanding in that era but the rise of tell-all books took away that polish and showed people that even iconic celebrities who we thought were clean cut were actually… human. I’ll never forget how jarring it was to find out how abusive John Lennon was.

    1. Don’t remember her.

This is the version I remember.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inHwBUo9Pzk

Saw her at the Colosseum at Caesar’s Las Vegas.
Gloria Estefan blew the roof off the place!!! One of the most amazing shows I have ever seen in my life. Our casino host got us 3rd row seats for my wife, son and myself! Unreal!!!

  3. Thank you, TK.

Just missed the single numbers with a 10 here last night. Betting other areas of sutton hit the singles.

  4. Logan got 0.01 inch melted yesterday. Hmmm at 20:1
that is a measly 0.2 inch of snow. The ratio could have been
    higher than 20:1.
Here we definitely received MORE than 2 tenths inch of snow.
it was at least 3/4 inch and perhaps an inch. 🙂

  5. I have been watching a lot of football in the last month and, in the Chevy Silverado commercial, you can hear Grand Funk Railroad’s 1970 classic “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)”.

I danced my first slow dance to this song at a middle school dance when I was 11. It was with Mary P..

My selection for your Sunday brunch:

    I AM your Captain! 🙂

  6. To be sure, this polar/modified arctic air will be in retreat and it will be a milder week.

Looking at the wind field this week, I see a lot of light winds and no deep low pressure areas going to our west.

I think the mild days might be more like 37-42F, some of the mid-upper 40s I’ve seen on TV weather casts, I don’t know if we get there. Outer Cape, Nantucket, MV ….. maybe.

  7. We were starting to clean up this day, 1978, from the “first” Blizzard of 1978. That storm from January 20-21 still stands in the Top 10 of Boston’s all-time greatest snowfalls (according to my records):

    Boston (Records since 1892)

    February 17-18, 2003 27.6″ *
    February 6-7, 1978 27.1″
    February 24-27, 1969 26.3″
    February 8-9, 2013 25.9″
    March 31-April 1, 1997 25.4″
    January 26-28, 2015 24.6″
    January 28-29, 2022 23.8” *
    February 7-10, 2015 23.8″
    January 22-23, 2005 22.5″
    January 20-21, 1978 21.4″
    March 3-5, 1960 19.8″
    February 16-17, 1958 19.4″
    February 8-10, 1994 18.7″
    January 7-8, 1996 18.2″
    December 20-22, 1975 18.2″
    December 26-27, 2010 18.2″

*-The single, greatest daily snowfalls during these storms:

    23.6 – January 29, 2022; February 17, 2003

    1. Ahhh, I remember that one well. Believe it or not, there was talk
prior to that storm arriving of a change to sleet and/or rain. Was NOT the case, obviously!!!

  8. When the school bell rings tomorrow at 1:50 pm, we will be halfway (School Day 90) through the 23-24 school year!!! I cannot believe how fast time is passing!!!

      Next

For much of our lives we wish we could hurry time,
become one of the older kids,
      then an adult,
      graduate,
      end the week’s work sooner,
gallop to an anticipated holiday or anniversary,
shorten the wait for a child to be born,
and we’re pleased when time seems to run flat out.

      Then one day we notice
the end of the course is in sight
and we’d like to slow down.
      But time keeps cantering
      at its habitual pace
immune to rein and spur alike
and what seemed so slow before
      now seems all too fast.

  9. Looking at the 12Z GFS and Canadian, they both show very little snow through the end of January. Maybe an inch or 2 at best.
We shall see how the rest of the month Really plays out. 🙂

      1. YUP, sure did.
All I said was that the GFS and Canadian showed little snow the rest of the month. 🙂

  10. Can already see the 12z ECMWF delaying the “warm up” even more, as it shrinks between the cold high to the north and the return of colder air from the north after as well.

  11. I know this week looks unsettled but wondered if you expect any meaningful amounts of snow or rain? Charles river is just starting to go down to more normal levels. Thanks.

  12. Good news on ice coverage. It’s getting there. Huge difference between yesterday and today. There are still many patches of open water, some small and some large but I’d say coverage is perhaps up to 60% between the Mass. Ave. bridge and the Longfellow, and 80% between the Longfellow and the Museum of Science. Very thin layer of ice, but there’s ice accretion.

  13. Feel terribly for Tyler Bass, the Bills players and the fans. That team has a lot of pre-2004 Red Sox vibe. And that’s hard to deal with.

  14. I hadn’t seen the fans throwing snowballs at Mahomes. Im not a mahomes fan ams As much as I wanted the Bills to win, the right team won. Sadly, it isn’t the first time
