Sunday February 25 2024 Forecast (8:19AM)

DAYS 1-5 (FEBRUARY 25-29)

If you had to be outside early on this Sunday morning you felt one of the colder mornings we’ve had this winter – and we haven’t had all that many. As of 7:00 a.m., temperature readings range from 11 to 18 across the majority of the WHW forecast area, with slightly “milder” readings around 20 to the middle 20s across Cape Cod. The cold was due to the combination of a clear sky and nearly calm wind overnight, under a ridge of high pressure – the perfect radiational cooling set-up. Today, you’ll really be able to notice the increased sun angle as the bright sun helps with a nice temperature recovery, and lighter winds than we had yesterday make it far more pleasant to be outside. It won’t be until late in the day that we start to see some clouds appearing in the western sky, and this signals the next disturbance to pass through. This particular one is not very strong and will just bring a few rain and snow showers to the region during the first 6 to 9 hours of Monday before it moves out and is replaced by dry, milder air. The warm-up will then continue into the middle of the coming week, but with increasingly unsettled weather as a stronger south to southwest air flow arrives and another low pressure trough approaches. The greatest chances for wet weather come Tuesday night then off and on through Wednesday. Any appreciable sunshine that can occur between bouts of wet weather Wednesday may aid the temperature in making a run at 60 for some areas, especially away from the South Coast where a south and southwest wind passes over cool ocean water. We still have to nail down the timing, but a strong cold front is due to pass through from west to east sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday, accompanied by a heavier band of showers and possible thunderstorms, and initiating a wind shift and sharp temperature drop for the final (extra) day of the month as dry weather returns.

TODAY: Lots of sun but some clouds appear later in the day from the west. Highs 36-43. Wind variable up to 10 MPH, then SW 5-15 MPH late day.

TONIGHT: Clouds increase. Overnight rain and snow showers possible mainly along the South Coast with a few light snow showers possible to the north of there. Lows 24-31 in the evening, then a slow temperatures rise overnight. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Eastern half of WHW area starts the day with clouds and passing snow/rain showers, then lots of sun with passing clouds. Highs 42-49. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 28-35, mildest along the South Coast. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Increasing clouds. Highs 47-54, coolest along the South Coast. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy with periods of rain. Lows 40-47. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Episodic rain showers. Highs 53-60 except cooler South Coast. Wind SW 15-25 MPH, higher gusts possible.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Rain showers likely. Chance of a thunderstorm. Lows 45-52. Wind SW 15-25 MPH, higher gusts, shifting to W.

THURSDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Temperatures fall to 30s. Wind W 15-25 MPH with higher gusts, diminishing later in the day.

DAYS 6-10 (MARCH 1-5)

The trend for the early days of March is for high pressure to be in control with dry weather and a moderating temperature trend for the few days and an increasing chance of unsettled weather toward the end of this period.

DAYS 11-15 (MARCH 6-10)

Higher chances for unsettled weather early to mid period followed by a return to fair weather. No major temperature anomalies indicated at this time.

  1. Thanks Tk! I am in Rockaway Beach, NY this morning where the wind has quite a bite to it this morning. 4 days left of meteorological winter!

  2. Thanks TK

If we don’t see any snow on the back end of the feb 29th rain – I don’t think we’ll see any the rest of the season. I will officially declare an early end to winter with still a lot of time left on the board. lmao

  3. Good morning and thank you TK.

17 this morning here. Not the coldest morning, but one of the coldest. (coldest here as been 14) Last night, I thought for sure, today 2/25, would be the coldest day of the Winter! Well, NOT here, but perhaps in other locations.

    1. I don’t recall it being touted as THE coldest. We’re still doing this without a polar jet in the area. It was just a good radiational cooling set-up.

      1. nope wasn’t suggesting that.
just that it was like 19 at 1 AM with the dew point 7 so I thought it might end up the coldest. that is,all.

  4. Thanks TK.

Missed you on the blog yesterday. Your last post was just after 9:00 am. Is your mother ok? Or was it WordPress?

  5. I wrote a comment that said thanks TK and then went on to say if we don’t see any snow with that feb 29th system I would officially declare an early end to winter at that point. The blog filtered it out. This is censorship! lmao

    1. I wrote the above in the screenshot explaining what was removed and then even that didn’t post. I can’t explain it.

      1. Have you tried another browser?

Which one are you using? I am using FIreFox. No issues.
I have also used EDGE with no issues and CHROME in the past with no issues.

But it’s worth a try. what have you got to lose?

            1. Oh Crap. For sure, it was worth a try. Sorry that didn’t work!

I’m going to try the same comment and see if it filters it for me.

              1. I wrote a comment that said thanks TK and
the went on to say if we don’t see any snow

                lmao

                1. hmmm seemed to go through fine for me.
Are you posting from your laptop or desktop?
If so, try the same post from your phone and see if you have any luck.

I am wondering if you are being hacked on that
                  IP address????

                  Something is NOT right!!!

  7. My wife, daughters and my wife’s best friend and her son are in St Thomas.

I didn’t go because it’s really frowned upon for teacher’s to add to vacations. One day, maybe, but not multiple days. Cheaper airfare though. I’m very supportive of this as we might do a Boston to Bermuda cruise in April that falls within the time off.

Anyhow, the dew point in St Thomas this morning is 75F. They have a SE wind off the tropical Caribbean Sea.

A couple days ago, a cool front did make it through, with good N winds. The dew point dropped to 64F for a day and it gave them their sunniest day. The sun angle is already back to 62 degrees so the high temp hit the mid 80s.

After following these dps, I’ve somehow made the upcoming 50s this week seem not too warm.

    🙂 🙂 🙂

I’m sure Matt can attest, the San Juan, PR NWS on temps definitely provide 2 forecasts, one for most of the near sea level locations, but these islands have elevated areas that are relatively cooler. A common forecast has been, lows in the low-mid 70s, low 60s in higher elevations.

    1. Tom that cruise is great I did it twice once early May & second early July . I would highly suggest doing it when it’s warm here as you can go in the pools & sit on decks right away . When we went in May it was too cold for that & when we went in July the fun started immediately.

      1. May is plenty warm enough, imho. Most years anyway.

I have been there in Feb,, Mar, April and June.

It was 76 one day in Feb and was the ONLY one swimming in the ocean. A local came by wearing a parker and ski hat while I was merrily swimming about in the ocean. Pretty funny scene. 🙂

We love Bermuda!!! Truly a beautiful island!!!

        1. Headed there in a few weeks. People are very friendly and scenery is beautiful. Have never been on cruise. Flight is quick and gets you there for lunch.

              1. no idea. in the past flew American and Delta. Don’t think either fly thete anymore. I think jet blue now.

                good luck.

be warned it is coolish this time of year. Mid 60s to low 70s unless you get an anomlous day. But beautiful!

                1. Thanks. Going end of March until early April or when rates go up. Think they will add airlines in season. Weather can be fickle but should by then.

        2. I’m not talking about Bermuda I’m talking about Boston . First trip was early May right after Mother’s Day & it was cold ( could not do pools or sit on desks for a bit . Second time July 6 it was like game on we could do everything once boarded .

      2. Thanks SSK ! I appreciate the heads up that it will be cool. That’s ok 🙂

Hope your wife is recovering with each day !

        1. No problem Tom . We just liked the fact that once we boarded in July it was do whatever because it was warm in Boston & in May not having that put a damper on things .

        1. She’s great Vicki, thanks !

She is like taking care of a toddler. 🙂

It doesn’t take her too long to be munching on something she shouldn’t be without keeping half an eye on her.

          But, it’s worth it.

  8. JPD not coldest overnight here either. But like you I was thinking might be which would have put us in single numbers. Our lowest so far has been 11

  9. Made it down to 11 overnight in Sharon, coldest of the winter. In a real winter, today wouldn’t get out of the teens/low 20’s.

  10. Philip: Thank you for your concern.
Yesterday was a combination of things.
I had a laptop issue that put that out of commission for over 12 hours.
I was working on some projects.
I visited my mother.. she’s doing well!
I got hit with a nasty migraine headache.
I had some errands to take care of in the evening.
Other than a lingering hollow pain from that migraine, all is well, including the laptop! 🙂

JP Dave: I continue to be somewhat stumped by the random missing messages. But I just remembered there is one thing I didn’t check and I’m going to do that.

      1. It’s getting there. I tend to get them in clusters. I had one Wednesday & one yesterday, both originating in the exact same place (left side of head).

I have now analyzed my migraines enough to predict, basted on the point of origin of the aura in the visual field and its direction of motion across the visual field, how severe my headache will be and nearly the precise location in my head that the blood vessel constriction occurs most severely (the trigger of a migraine). That part is fascinating.

        1. Well, at least you know it’s coming on.

I feel for you and anyone who gets them.

My wife gets them on occasion and it really brings her to a stop. And then, even as the episode eases, it can be many hours after that before she feels ready to resume whatever her day has planned.

  11. Update on random message filtering…

Dr. Stupid, I found 3 of your messages from a few days ago in the spam folder and restored them. I didn’t have time to scan the entire folder yet to see if any others are in there, but JPD, your recent missing messages are neither in spam nor in moderation. So that part is a mystery. My techie has no idea what might be going on other than “a WordPress issue” which doesn’t surprise me. WP seems to have a lot of “issues”. haha!

    1. TK,
I am not aware of any of my posts that are missing.
It was Vickie and Longshot who were the others
      with missing posts. 🙂

    2. Mine did not go to spam either. The times mine have, I see the message but with a disclaimer clearly showing at the top that states it is in moderation.

I don’t seem to think Longshot’s went to spam either. But May be wrong.

Now I try to remember to make sure my comments post before moving on.

  12. Eversource SUCKS!!!!!
    Poer out again here.
    I am totally PISSED OFF.
    Eversource is USELESS!!!!!
If they spent more money on maintenance instead of lining the pockets of investors perhaps there would be less outages!!!!!

    1. You hit the nail squarely on the head. I know I’ve mentioned here before that the company where mac and I worked had maintenance records dating back decades for the majority (98%) of electric utilities in the US. They produced the test sets and trained. The space between test intervals had doubled last I heard and that was over a decade ago.

FWIW national grid is no better

But why are you losing power?

      1. We were out for 2 hours. Then there was another outage where we didn’t lose power, but a comcast relay station did, so we are currently without Internet, Cable and Phone!!)(@)#*()*!@)#(*!)(@*#)(!*@(#*!@)#*(!

I have both of our computers running the internet via USB Tethering with our phones!!! Luckily that works great!!

We can even watch cable this way should we have to later on if it is still out!!! What a PAIN!!!!!

    2. It could be worse. We have Unitil and the highest rates in the US, except for Hawaii. The service is horrible. We went 12 days with no power after the ice storm of 2008.

Unitil is currently applying for a huge rate increase.

  13. 12z GFS

I don’t know if it’s accurate all the way to the end of the run, but it’s waves of pacific storms moving into California and once the storms head east, they first bring Pacific air with them and then grab warm Gulf of Mexico air and surge it into the plains and then the east coast.

Short range, medium range, even again in the very long range, hr 330-360. Rinse and repeat.

Any waning chances of polar air establishing for days at a time just can’t get a lasting foothold.

  14. Thanks TK.

Kind of fitting that this morning was as cold as it was there. The ~2/25 period was long progged as the end of, or at least a break in, the expected colder and snowier pattern in the Northeast. The cold somewhat delivered (not really) and the snow of course was pretty much a no show, though the mid-Atlantic did ok.

From here, the only question is just how warm the next 3-4 weeks will be in the East. Broadly speaking, this March seems like an obvious contender for warmest March on record in the entire eastern half of the country. But for the Northeast in particular, there are many pitfalls to getting legitimate sustained warmth this early in the spring season, so we’ll see…

If you want cold and snow, you know where to go: West. The storm door is about to unload on the West Coast once again, and the coming month has historic potential. It does continue to seem like much maligned southern California may be somewhat (not entirely) spared, and that it’ll instead be the Sierra and the Northwest that get the brunt of this next round. Some of those areas, especially the Pac NW, have actually been on the drier side and could use some of this activity, but it’ll eventually become too much of a good thing with how relentless this coming pattern looks to be. Elevations above 6000 feet from the Sierra to the Cascades will receive hundreds of inches of snow in the next 3-4 weeks.

    1. I was thinking the Mid Atlantic may have a better shot than SNE during February back in my winter outlook. Not as cold overall, but that kind of worked out in some aspects…

    2. The timing for this pattern couldn’t be better with our trip to Tahoe coming up March 13-17. Just reading todays weather blog post from the meteorologist who forecasts for Palisades and he is expecting 3-5 feet from the storm later this week. They ended up with 8 feet of snow total for the month of February.

Definitely hoping the storm train ends or takes a break right before we get there though. As fun as it would be to be out there for big storm, they have to close a lot of terrain due to high winds on the Sierra crest, avalanche control, digging lifts out, etc

As far as after this week, the met for Palisades thinks the trough may set up further east over the Rockies which would result in weaker/drier storms for the northern Sierra as the storm track is more inland. But we’ll see….not really trusting the models beyond two weeks out for here or out there.

  15. Thanks, TK!

    How’s Mrs. SSK?

    Low was 15 this morning.

I, too, do remember the severe storms eight years ago this morning. I believe we had five consecutive Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.

Back to the classroom tomorrow morning and it will be a very sad return. I am sure that you heard of the tragic death of a girl in a Middleborough house fire yesterday. I believe the poor soul was a sixth grade girl at our town’s middle school whose older sister is a senior at MHS.

    1. Oh captain. I had not heard. I don’t even have words to say how horrific this is. That poor poor family. It will be such a heart wrenching day for you all.

    2. So incredibly sad. And I just read there was a horrible accident on Route 105 in Middleboro today with a possible fatality. The Middleboro first responders have had a very challenging weekend. My prayers are with all affected by these tragedies.

  16. Today marks 50 consecutive days with 3+ inches snowcover at Fitchburgh MA. Obviously that’s nothing unusual for winter. But it’s important to point out that from northern Worcester County and adjacent southwestern NH westward, it’s been snowcovered for quite a while. Bare ground is not as extensive as many may have thought. 🙂 We just can’t buy many flakes the further east and south you get … until you get to the Mid Atlantic of course. 😉

  17. Walked the shore at 15F this AM. Guessing the wind chill was 10-12 F. That’s about the limit. When wind chills get to single digits, walking is not fun. Stuck at 36F now just like yesterday.

  18. Temp under-performed at Boston today.
Forecast high was 38. Actual high looks like 33, maybe 34.
Got really close to having it below freezing all day.

    1. Interesting….VERY unusual for Boston to “under-perform” in high temps even during the winter months, especially by that many degrees.

Of course, “under-performance” is Boston’s middle name during snow events. 😉

  19. I’m watching Gran Turismo. I may be late to the party; but if you have not seen it, it’s good. My grandkids liked it as well. Captain,I thought of you. Although you’ve been in my thoughts all day

  20. Yes, Sue. A 66-year old man died in Middleborough this afternoon when his car hit a tree. A very tough weekend for the MPD and the MFD along with the EMTs.

Thanks, Vicki, for your concern. Lots of staff will be on hand at the middle school for students and staff.

    SSK, how is Mrs. SSK?

    1. Doing very well , thank you captain . VNA will be involved for a couple of weeks & that is a good thing .

      1. I hope VNA was involved. That gives you all peace of mind

Not VNA and really has nothing to do with VNA but popped into my mind….oddly Mac’s hospice nurse was from Pembroke.

    1. I think that’s the high temp forecasts from the Euro ensemble, currently projecting 2 waves of mild to warm weather over the next 10-14 days.

  21. Through February 25. Boston is sitting at #1 for driest February on record. They may lose the #1 spot just before the month ends, but it will be top 5.
