Briefly Better, Then Getting Wetter

3:30AM

Upper level low pressure will continue to dominate the Northeast well into next week. But a drier slot of air at the surface will provide a little bit of a break for today after yesterday’s very wet and cool day. Some sunshine today will boost temperatures into the 70s but the air will be unstable enough that some showers and thunderstorms may pop up during the afternoon. This brief break will be short lived, as the entire upper level low will shift southeastward and pull the moisture from today back down across southern New England Monday, which will turn out to be a very wet and chilly day. Improvement after this will be very slow heading through midweek.

Forecast for eastern MA, southeastern NH, and RI… (Update as of 11:25AM)

THIS AFTERNOON: Most sun in RI and adjacent MA but more sun trying to work further north and east into eastern MA and southern NH with time, though lots of clouds and a few patches of drizzle continue in these areas for a time. More clouds returning from the west later and a slight chance of a few showers or even an isolated thunderstorm late day. High 72-77 but 60s Cape Cod and Islands. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy in the evening with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Overcast overnight with rain and drizzle developing. Low 50-55. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Overcast with rain and drizzle. High 53-58. Wind NE 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

TUESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of light rain and drizzle. Low 50. High 61.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers and drizzle. Low 53. High 66.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of showers. Low 55. High 70.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 59. High 74.

  1. Thanks TK!!

You really thinking Friday will end up being mostly sunny? Big company event in SNH and everyone is wondering what to expect.

  2. GFS still shows a fairly big warm up and high pressure in here toward the end of the week/beginning of next week. Block looks to start to break down too. Hope it holds. It is 7 days away. Hopefully once this breaks down and the NAO comes back up we can get a more summer type pattern going.

  3. The first breaks of sun showing up in Woburn between drizzle drops. Kind of odd to see drizzle with a NW wind, but when you got a storm wrapping up like this it does happen. The dry slot is ever so slowly trying to eat away at the back edge of the clouds in eastern and northeastern MA before the stuff from the west gets here later!

I know some really hate this stuff and have their reasons, and as you know, personally I don’t mind these types of days in late Spring / early Summer as long as they don’t dominate too long (2009).

Still will be under the influence of upper low pressure much of the coming week but have hopes to bust out sometime at the end of the week. Optimistically Friday, realistically Saturday. Time will tell.

    1. Darn TK I missed you – my husband asked when the stuff from the west will get here. He is trying to get a golf game in but his friend wants to wait until early afternoon and my husband is afraid the rain will be here by then.

      1. I don’t think there will be much around this afternoon other than isolated to scattered pop up stuff, so I wouldn’t cancel a golf game but I would play with a watchful eye, only because any pop ups do have some slight risk of producing lightning. Still feel that the % chance of anything in a given spot is low enough that I would go ahead with outdoor plans. High school graduation in Woburn is today at 2PM. I’m going to walk down with my son, as we know a couple people making the transition today. Hoping any showers stay away from there for the 2PM to approximately 3:45PM ceremony.

        1. Thanks TK – he decided not to play so headed to Lexington to hit balls and practice chipping which he says is in need of work. Got there to a torential downpour. Is back here and now heading to Northborough to try and play 9 holes! I think the pop ups are following him

          1. There was like one downpour about 1/8 of a mile wide and doesn’t it go right over that area. Everything else stayed away except some pockets of drizzle and sprinkles.

            1. He just got home and is sorry he played instead of practiced. He laughed when I read him acemasters comment and groaned when I read TKs

  4. Thanks TK for the update!! I also don’t mind this weather – or any weather – makes the nice stuff just that much sweeter 🙂

  5. Made an edit to today’s forecast for details and to cover this afternoon. The remainder is unchanged. A new post for the coming week will appear later this evening. Have a great afternoon everybody!

  6. Brett Anderson at Accuweather has his month-long Euro forecast up. He see’s warmer and drier weather from the week of the 11th onward. Seems to correspond with the GFS and the more neutral NAO. We just have to get through the next 6-7 days.

    1. That’s what Scott said earlier too. Cool! Turned out to be a great afternoon. TK thanks for getting that sun in here. And the cool air:)

  7. Can u say collapsing, wow, it’s amazing how the cooler air is just eating them up as they enter 495. It’s very normal though

  8. I’m confused. High clouds are moving rapidly in a northish to south ish direction but line on radar is traveling E to W. how does that happen

      1. Ok that is pretty cool. It looks as if the line that was traveling W-E hit a wall just west of here and started moving n-s ish. Did I imagine that?

        1. I saw that too Vicki. I thought we were going to get it just as we went out to eat and came out of the restaurant and nothing but sprinkles here in North Attleboro.

TK is it riding the best area of instability and is that why it starting moving southeast or is it part of the transfer of energy to the offshore developing storm?

          1. I think it’s an optical illusion. I widened the radar and it looks as if the circulation northish to south ish was always there but was shifting east. Bad explanation I know 🙂

          2. It was just responding to the overall circulation. There were really 2 main low centers, one well to the west and that convection was on the eastern edge of it. The low closer to eastern MA (offshore) was throwing the northerly flow into the eastern areas and that was responsible for keeping the storms to the west and southwest.

  9. John or anyone else that can give me a hand. I am going to attempt to install a mulch border with edging around my fence. Right now I have grass that grows right up to my white vynal fence and it has been taking a beating when I mow and edge the grass. There is a total of 200 linear feet that I have to install and will be on average 2 feet wide. My question is, do I have to remove all the grass in the area or could I simple lower my mower to scalp the grass, then install the weed block and mulch on top of it? We will be doing plantings but do not know what to plant and will hold off until fall to do so.

    1. Rip the grass out and apply a preen weed preventive granular in mulch, hope that helped and hope I understood u correct 🙂

    2. Remove the grass not using the mower. For the border t
You can make a nice design using an edger tool. It looks nice as the mulch borders the grass. Even nicer with plantings. Some dwarf boxwoods would look good year round. Than for the rest you could do seasonal flowers. Annuals, geraniums and mums for the fall. You could even throw in a hosta. Hope this helps.

      1. John are you still here. We have a nasty grass on out front lawn. Maybe it’s called nuts hedge. It’s thicker blades and grows faster than regular grass. It drives me nuts and I don’t know how to get rid of it. Does it sound familiar?? Thank you !

        1. No. but repost this in the morning and I will ask the guy I work with. He knows everything.

      2. Thanks boys, I will use a straight edge shovel to cut the lines and pitch fork to pull up the grass. I will probably will have to add soil to keep the mulch level to the lawn level. John I have a new Wright Mower, you should check it out.

        1. Never heard of that. Ride or push. I just bought a crafts man push, works awesome and great on gas. Just use one of the hand edgers to get up the grass. Push in a little than tap out using your foot..

  10. The CPC is showing well above avg temps after this week. Hope the humidity stays in check, but I would like to see a stretch of 80-85 degree weather.

      1. If my house had A/C then I wouldn’t really mind high dew points, but since we only rely on fans, my house can get very uncomfortable, especially for sleeping.

        1. Scott we have window ac that can cool house if necessary but prefer the ceiling fans. We have one in the majority of rooms. AC means we are shut in. I don’t mind that in winter but in summer much prefer being out and having windows open. I prefer non humid for that reason too

  11. That blob of rain is gonna work it’s way down the coast and reach here later tommorrow morning in a weaker fashion I’ll add, I expect around a quarter to half inch during Mon 🙂

  12. When heights rise in Greenland, watch out New England 🙂
I noted this back on May 19th, when Greenland’s 500mb heights were rising, we may see a bit of blocking setting up for the start of June.
Sure enough the blocking is here.

  13. On the 6:00 pm news there was an event shown in West Roxbury earlier today and there was bright sunshine with blue skies…nothing even close to that here in Dorchester. It was all clouds with barely any brightening and it even darkened a few times.

Very strange that such a difference in skies between Dorchester and West Roxbury.

  14. Barry’s evening blog has 85-90 come next week. 🙂

I normally would never put a smiley face after a 90 degree temp, but considering what we have now, I’ll take it. It will cool down again eventually unlike the mid-Atlantic and deep south.

  15. CPC shows above normal temps in both 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks so hang in there because there is hope. Enjoy the savings in the electric bill as AC will not be needed this week!

    1. I love this weather. Im reading on the porch with light sweats and long sleeve top and looking forward to great sleeping weather
