Frost In Sight, Freeze We Might

8:35PM

It’s coming to southern New England, the first widespread frost, and in some areas, a freeze that will end the growing season (and kill the mosquitoes and allergy-causing weeds). But that will be Saturday morning. Before that happens, we have Friday, which will be a day in which the cold front marks the leading edge of this chilly air will traverse the region, accompanied by lots of clouds and a  few showers. By late in the day, the sky will clear out and though winds will remain gusty into the evening, delivering the cold air, the winds will slacken off later at night and allow temperatures to fall significantly.

After a crisp and cool Saturday, perfect for outdoor Autumn activities, a strong southwesterly air flow will drive mild air into the region on Sunday, accompanied by clouds and a shower threat. This mild weather and shower threat will last into Monday as a wave of low pressure moves through the region. This will be followed by high pressure and fair weather for the middle of next week.

  1. Thanks TK.
I am going to try toughen it out tomorrow night and not turn the heat on. Its only one chilly night before a moderation begins in the temperature department. Could we be looking at some Indian Summer weather???

  2. Hopefully if that happens it will be the last taste of summer until 2013 and we could get back to those nice cool crisp autumn days which hopefully will be followed by a few good Noreaster’s this winter.

  3. Thanks TK !

Minneapolis, MN and Green Bay, WI : 29F, International Falls, MN : 16F.

Meanwhile, Texas and the Gulf Coast are in the 60s and 70s this early morning.

  4. TK, I am driving to FL starting out on Sunday am. Hoping you can give me a driving forecast for Sun and Mon. Thanks.

  5. Raining here in Boston. Very chilly now that the sun is gone. I was caught off guard with the sun shining this morning.

    1. Rain and cold here too John – it’s 46 and holding. And was quite windy; however, it seems to have calmed a bit and is now just breezy

      1. windy here as well. I guess tk had ac backwards forcast this morning, at least here in Boston as the sun was nice and bright earlier. LOL.

    1. Dude it feels like it. Don’t take the bait with accuweather calling for a warm winter. Come spring everyone will be talking about the wintertime, And not on how warm it was. If I have the time this weekend, I am Acctually going to review there accuracy.

    1. Their forecast for tonight is for the low to drop into the single digits. If they get below 8F, it will break a new record for the date.

    2. Thanks, Mark for the link! I like looking at the snow and I am looking forward to a snowier winter this season so come nxt. March I can say “great winter – looking forward to the warmth of spring and summer”! 🙂

  6. Well turned it on. I havto go into work tomorrow, so I wanted to test it for awhile.now since I’m leaving the house at 5:30am tomorrow morning I will really get to experience the cold. Off to dinner. Take care.

  7. I predict Logan will get down officially to 36F but all other areas within the city proper will be between 30-34F. If this was 75-100 years ago, Boston would share in the freeze zone into the 20’s. The city is just too much of a heat island these days.

It is good to see the frosts/freezes coming much earlier (3-4 weeks) compared to last year…and bye-bye mosquitoes! R.I.P. 🙂

    1. Philip imthin you are very right. I looked back to the weekend last year when we had the Halloween snow. One of my comments is the mosquitoes should finally be gone. So I’m thinking we hadn’t had a good frost before that snow. But not positive.

      1. I believe Boston didn’t see its first frost/freeze last year until November 24th…UGH! just thinking about it.

  8. We turned the heat on today too. The house was 58 when my wife got home. I guess it is time :(.

We are down to 40 so far outside.

    1. We are at 40 also north with a DP down to 22. Also lots of wind. We are gusting up to 18 mph. The house is 68. We won’t use heat yet. I was just sitting out on the porch. Someone has a fire so it smells like fall/winter and the wind sounds great. We will probably put the windows in the porch this weekend so I wanted one last night to enjoy it 🙁

      1. I won’t use heat either, my wife just asked should we leave the bedroom window open and I said just leave it open for a little longer

  9. According to the latest CPC well above normal temps are expected for the next 2 weeks so hopefully, any home heating will be turned off again or at least kept to a bare minimum just enough to be comfortable.

Home heating oil and gas prices are expected to be sky high this upcoming winter. 🙁

    1. At least natural gas prices are still somewhat low. Luckily I have gas heat. I don’t know how you all cope with the high oil prices.

As far as gas for the car. We are really being raked over the coals right now by all of the refinary issues. Gas on the futures market is about 2.90. You usually can add about 50-60 cents to that for what the price at the pump should be about 2-3 weeks from now. The thing is, it has been around 2.90 for a few weeks now and we are not seeing that at the pump. Our area still has it around 3.83 or so, should be more like 3.45-3.55.

  10. Longshot…
You should be fine driving for the most part. Maybe a few showers toward the end of the trip. Otherwise I think stuff approaching from the west should be slow enough that you miss most of it. Be safe!

  11. Favorite morning ob…….

Hartford, CT : .25 mile visibility with (FZFG) fog thats freezing up on surfaces. Must be fogged in around the Connecticut River and other bodies of water across New England.

  12. Hmmmm….

Late last October, that snowstorm was the bad omen for snow the following several months.

Could this unseasonably cold shot mean no cold this winter ? 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  13. Tom, could it also be a preview of things could come? 🙂

We got down to 29 here at 6:30am and has held steady for the last hour. Sun is up now and should start inching upward.

  14. We were 27 about 10 mins. ago but now it is 31 degrees. The sun is doing its thing in our yard – glistening gold on the pine trees and leaves on some of the other trees. I love sunny early mornings in fall.

I have also noticed how the foliage color started out bright and then faded. We noticed it even out towards the Berkshires when we went out there. This morning, Barry mentioned how the colors are very muted.

I have been wondering the same things Tom and Coastal have been wondering – could the unseasonable cold mean less cold this winter? Or could it be a preview of things to come?

I am meeting a friend later on and we are going to do a little hiking – nothing big, just more of a hefty walk. I need to get in shape to get back to how I used to be! 🙂 Fortunately, it’s not my weight (that’s very good) it is just my muscles that need to get used to more strenuous walking. Have a good wknd. all!

    1. Have fun rainshine. I’m not in good shape all around 🙁 and have started exercising again now that cooler weather is here.

  15. There been some record lows temps across SNE today. Hartford and Bridgeport CT have set record lows.
The good news this is short and lived and those temps will be a lot warmer tomorrow.

  16. It got to 28 here but is up,to 31 now. It wasn’t cold enough IMHO to kill the mosquitoes. It didnt really harm any plants/flowers I have left.

I am not sure about this being unusually cold. To me it is more typical of what it used to be.

Rainshine is was thinking a while ago that leaves would be off the trees by end of October but the majority of our trees are mostly if not all green. Odd how it started out on schedule and then seemed to stop and just get dull

    1. Plenty of people use oil – we don’t have gas on our street. Switching to propane wasn’t going to pay for itself.

  17. Beautiful morning out here in Amherst. Crisp cool weather. Staying with my wife and daughter and B&B overlooking a farm. We are up for parents weekend (visiting my son) at UMass. Just saw a very cool looking weather balloon pass by us. All the sheep and llamas at the farm watched…it was pretty cool watching them the balloon.

Last night it was downright cold out here and early in the evening the wind was biting. Of course two months from now we might think it was balmy 🙂

  18. *does a dance* No more bug spray for me! 😀

*shivers* I’m the type of person who needs a winter coat in October…LOL

  19. My husband and son are playing golf in boylston. Son just arrived wearing shorts and a Tshirt. And I thought I was nuts ~)

  20. Colors will brighten in the next few days.

    Update later.

Going to enjoy the day at a corn maze and farm.

    Have a great day!

  21. I think today was not as cold as I thought it would be. I left the house early and was like I put on the heat why, its back off. Coastal thought of you on the way to work as I was being pulled over by the mall.

  22. Boston is in dier need of housing, they said they r building 5,000 apts over the next 5-7 yrs and that’s not going to put a dent in it, I don’t want my kids living in Texas bc they can’t live here, lets get with it people, compromise!! So many just turn a blind eye and r selfish. As for the weather it’s great and I love it, have a great weekend!! Go Patriots!! 🙂

      1. Sorry have to second John. Boston is one of the most spectacular cities in the world. We have family from all over who come here and immediately feel its charm, it’s history and all it offers.

        1. Vicky I love New England but we r far from being the best and that’s why I’m here too push the envelope on progression and not just be like my dad and say everything’s fine,, when there not, he tells me how he fought everything and today regrets it, stop thinking that bedroom communities works well with a major city, it never will and never has, have a great day and thank you 🙂

          1. Charlie I respect your opinion as you should respect mine. Neither is right or wrong. We gave ours and back we go to weather since its a weather blog.

Like you my plants all survived last night. We had frost on our car windows but no sign of anything on the lawn. Darn

          1. John, not appropriate to posts comments like that. I think you own Charlie an apology. Everyone has the right to post there thoughts in a civil manner and not be aggressively threatened by you.

    1. Last time we did a maze our kids waited about an hour for my husband and me to find our way. We were not the only ones – about four other groups kept passing us over and over. It’s a blast

  23. Coastal is the glass in your screen room yet? We did end up putting ours in today. It’s always a bit sad because its the end of spring/summer but a bit happy because its the start of fall/winter. Hard to explain. Do you use yours once the glass is in?

    1. I generally do not put the glass in until late October or early November. We do use it during the winter, the adults hang out in there while the kids are sledding.

      1. What a perfect place to watch the kids sled We have a couple of busy weekends coming up so decided to get the glass in today. The door is a pocket storm so we can at least out that glass down is we have to.

  24. We’ve experienced seven months of mosquitoes. I remember in mid March I was painting trim outside during dusk and the mosquitoes were horrible. I don’t remember them being the bad in March.

    1. They were horrible here then also but we had two hard freezes and until late August had fewer mosquitoes than ever because of the freezes. We never saw one at Humarock either and sat out till 10:00 every night.

  25. Logan got down officially to 35F…one degree below my prediction of 36F. Not too shabby IMO. 😉

Any mosquitoes in the suburbs should be dead by now until next late spring/summer. I imagine though Boston and the outer cape will have to contend with them awhile longer, unfortunately.

    1. We didn’t have a hard enough freeze sadly Philip. I tried to sit on the deck last night and had mosquitos

        1. I don’t know about anyone else but we slept until 8:40. I never, ever, ever sleep that late.

Good morning to you as well 🙂
