Snow-Between

10:12AM

A cold weekend with high pressure in control will progress to a milder Tuesday and Wednesday, but getting from cold to mild will be accomplished with a period of snow later Monday with the passage of a warm front. This does not look like a significant event in terms of amounts, however we will have to watch for timing of the event which may result in a slick evening commute Monday and continued slippery untreated roads Monday evening. More on this later. A cold front will put an end to the brief mild party by Thursday as a return to colder weather commences. Looking ahead, the first days of February look cold, and we may have to also watch for potential storminess.

  1. Thanks TK…Joe Joyce is already thinking widespread 1-3″ for the Mon/Mon. night event. Do you agree to an extent at this point? I am still amazed at the consistent CPC outlook of well below normal temps and well above precip (snow) given the +NAO.

NWS is also monitoring the possibility of a Groundhog day snowstorm development as well.

    1. I can see that if we can generate the QP. I worry that the event ends up similar to the one that went by last night.

  2. Non-weather related comment: Kerry Connelly announced this morning that she will be on weekday mornings. What will become of Paula Ebben?? I will miss Paula. I met her at a BC basketball game a few years back and was very nice and pleasant.

Quite frankly, I have always thought that David & Paula really made a great combo. 🙂

    1. Certain combos just work.

Since TV (news, sports, etc.) is all closely related to the broadcast side of meteorology, I like talking about that here as well.

Everybody tell me your favorite anchor team(s) over the years:

Mine are Liz & Jack on WBZ.

A great news/weather combo was also from the old days at WBZ: Jack Chase & Don Kent. 🙂

      1. I should also mention that I like the current team on Ch 5. It took me a while to warm up to the style of Ed Harding but I think he’s excellent. I remember watching him as host of the 1/2 hour version of the candlepin bowling show that was on Ch 5 – not the hour-long version that Don Gillis hosted but a shorter show that aired right after it for a while.

        1. Ed and Heather on channel five. Liked Chet and Nat before that. I grew up watching channel five so that’s what I watch.

          1. Dickie was a very good forecaster and still is. The first time I met Dick was when I was in 9th grade and got to lead him into the auditorium at my school for his visit there.

He gave out these cards with a drawn picture of himself with a tie that changed color based on the humidity level. Classic.

            1. Thanks. I remember and old tv spot for Dick Albert that showed him as a kid in the 50’s predicting rain on a sunny day and no one believe him…tag line was “Even back then, they should have listened to Dickie” or something like that.

    2. Philip, if I heard correctly, Paula Ebben is moving to the 5pm newscasts during the week, with Lisa Hughes continuing to anchor at 6and 11pm.

I agree with the anchor teams above. Adding in Bruce Schwoegler and Bob Lobel always made that ch. 4 broadcast entertaining.

I’d have to say that Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy, when they get themselves going, usually have me roaring and they are also pretty good at delivering a baseball game.

      1. Bruce was one of a kind. Ego as big as a football stadium, but he was a NICE guy and you just had to excuse the ego thing. He really was quite funny from what I heard.

Barry Burbank told me that Jack Williams was the funniest guy he ever worked with. Many times coming back from commercials was a struggle because it was nearly impossible to keep a straight face based on some outrageous comment/joke Jack would make just before the camera rolled. Once in a while Jack would make an on-air comment that was right on the edge. It never bothered me. I loved it.

I don’t watch too many Sox games on TV but that Don & Jerry combo is priceless.

My mother met Bob Lobel and the thing that stuck in her mind was that he walked really funny.

She also met Mike Lynch at a hardware store and said he was a jerk to the people working there – LOL!

        1. Yes TK, I absolutely agree with your about Bruce Schwoegler. Years ago I was at a lecture he was giving and signed an autograph picture for me. I still have it in display! 😀

Btw, just curious. Is Bruce still with us? He literally disappeared after his release in…2001 was it?

        2. My husband and me are both amateur radio operators and some yrs. ago I was activities director of our local ham radio group and I got Bruce to give a talk at our mtg. He was great and a very good and enthusiastic meteorologist. I am not sure what he is doing now, ‘though.

      2. Thanks Tom, I hope you are correct. I would really miss seeing Paula altogether. I wonder why the change? And who will be taking Kerry’s place on weekends?

Actually, Joe Joyce and Kerry look like they have a really good time together…almost like a George Burns/Gracie Allen maybe? 😉

        1. Kate Merrill will be taking her place on the weekends. My favorite fantasy anchor team would be Jack, Liz, Harvey and Bob Lobel. I did like Jack, Liz, Bruce and Bob in the 80’s though.

I agree with TK that Ed Harding is good. Took me a while toward up to him too.

I did enjoy the recent Kerry and Joe combo on the weekends together, it will nice to see Kerry on the weekend mornings.

    1. I was never really much of a Chet and Natalie fan but I have always been curious as to why their marriage broke up. It seemed so sudden and out-of-the-blue, but in reality it probably wasn’t especially to their co-workers.

    1. This year the streets have been more white from salt than from snow. 😉

We need a good Charlie (rain) Storm to wash them off. 😉

        1. I understand hospitals but ik some of them they’re in there trucks getting coffee waiting for the 1st flakes, they really can’t really on money from overtime or winter bc it’s not consistent enough, I even saw a plow at Toyota on rt 1 he had his plow down for 1 run to see what he had at the end,, I watched him for 10 min, it’s crazy, imagine the amount of money that was spent on that coating of snow we got, is it really worth? Is it less expensive to do what the south does and just take a day off, they have about 3-5 days a year that everything shuts down so it’s fun

          1. In the last 5-10 years things have gotten out of control with slip-and-fall claims, the parties involved sue everybody they can. Property owner, tenant, snow plow contractor, the mail person, the newspaper guy, heck they’d throw mother nature on the suit if they could. Since then, contractors have to take into consideration that doing nothing is what gets them in trouble. Yes, it would be nice if people were to look out the window and say “Gee, the air temperature is cold and there is precipitation on the ground, it might be slippery I should prepare for that.” But there are those who don’t and those are the few that can and will sue when they step out their car, well knowing it may be slippery, and slip. Contractors in conjunction with the customer have to account for actions for each type of winter weather event, from freezing rain, snow, dustings to feet. They aren’t grubbing for money, or trying to rob their customers, they have to follow the contract mutually agreed upon or they are liable.

            1. Well said. Though some might abuse the situation, the majority do not. We are called in at the hospital right away because of patient and staff safety. Towns, city’s and business have a responsibly to make things safe when a storm comes around, its there job. Although people who do snow removal like myself its not always about the money. For example we get taking away from our families at all hours of the night and holidays. When you have young kids like myself it can be tough. So yes some abuse the system, but most do not. They have a job/contract to do and they need to do it right. As tk and myself spoke about the conditions last night, it does not take much precipitation to make things hazardous.

    2. First hand knowledge on salt last night, yes it was needed. Driving home from the providence Bruins game and the roads were pretty slick. Saw one car on rt3 that went off the road. No call last night. They new I was getting at 11 so they probably just left me be. Anybody in the back bay area/ northeastern/ longwood area no how the roads were there. So maybe a couple more inches for Monday?. Did the Bruins win last night.

              1. Bc we didn’t really know how good they were, I really believe next year it will happen, Patriotnation has been spoiled 🙂

      1. I was on the road around 2AM and even with our 0.2 inch here the roads were indeed rather slick. I didn’t see any treatment being done at that time.

I was thinking that it was the type of late-night you’d see a lot of spin outs of people driving that probably shouldn’t be on the road regardless of the weather, because of the level of alcohol in their bloodstreams.

  3. town of billerica is between is a 2 still. many back yards including mine have some snow. expecially near nuttings lake and western sections of town. also the center. marshland has been ice covered for the first time since the 2011 season. there was actually some snow blowing in off the marsh the other day. find that sometimes even if there is no snow up in the yard or any where else there is still snow some where in the marshland.

  4. Philip… Regarding your question about Bruce. He is still around. He started his own company, MySky Communications. I believe they are based in Lakeville MA.

      1. I believe in some ways it is. I have never read much into it, but I’m sure if you google it you’ll find some info. 🙂

  5. My family basically watched WBZ all the time. When I got married my husband and me watched Ch. 5 – mainly because we liked the meteorologist, Bob Ryan, I think. When he left, we went to Ch. 4. I like all the anchors on WBZ, actually. Not a big fan of Ch. 5 or 7. But I am a fan of NECN at times – espec. Matt Noyes.

  6. two events
    one on tuesday
light to marginal moderate winter weather event ends as a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain inside of 495 and south of the pike
most see light snow event but some areas that stay as all snow marginal moderate event possible. expecially north central mass and the berks.
    snow to rain southeast mass.
break tuesday and wednesday possible shower much warmer with temps in the 40s low 50s interior southeast mass ,rd and ct.
wednesday night: showers move in, starts as a mix of rain and snow in the berks possibly. but eventually everyone except areas east of i95 will see precipitation possibly ending as a wintry mix of snow and rain.

now lets see if this becomes right 😉

  7. A lot less news hype with channel 5. That why randy left 7 to go to 5. My problem is Lynch and Harding at the biggest A-hole you will ever meet in your life.

  8. Since we are on the topic….I do not mean this as an insult but am I the only one that feels like they are watching Peter Brady give the weather when Chris Lambert is on channel 7?

  9. To follow up Tom and JJ’s comment from the last blog. When I lived in Va. Beach in my junior high years, school as closed for two days for two inches of snow!

    1. Yeah when I lived in Tx when it snowed u stayed home and whenever it warmed back up which was usually the next day u went back to work so when the threat of snow was coming everyone got excited for the day off

  10. Down there they freak out when snow flakes start to fly.
As for Monday a light accumulation possible and could be a tricky pm commute in spots. It doesn’t take much wintry precipitation to cause problems on the roads. I always find it interesting the small events in the winter cause the most accidents on the roads.

  11. I was a big Bob Copeland fan and a HUGE Mark Rosenthal fan. I’ve been waiting for him to come back to Boston but I know that Mr. Rosenthal will not be walking back through that door.

      1. look like rain showers changing to snow showers. from northwest to southeast. and probably 40s for most but some 50 degree readings wednesday afternoon.

  12. Awww I missed the met conversation. I’ve said before dick was one of my favorites. He had incredible enthusiasm. Thinking of don kent just makes me smile. Chet and Natalie have a daughter who showed in the same horse circuit as mine. I don’t remember seeing Chet at the shows but Natalie was a typical show mom and always seemed very nice

I’m a 7 fan…….anyone surprised. I enjoy Pete and JR and know first hand the hype management forces irritates them. They are both down to earth good people. I haven’t worked with Pete on weather Watchers for years but if i email him with a question, he answers the same day no matter how trivial the question. When you talk to JR you’d think you were his best friend. I’m getting used to Chris and think he makes a good fit.

      1. Those 2 are very nice guy. As you know I’ve known Barry since the 1980s. Pete is a FB friend. We’ve had a few nice threads going on his page about weather recently.

    1. Not in any way meant as an Insult but I think the accuracy of Pete and JR is downplayed and I wonder if its because of the hype that can be around that. Sadly the powers that be at 7 are foolish enough to think hype is what people want. Go figure

  13. LOL!!!! This system is going to have more in the way of ice than snow for areas that experience winter weather from Luna

  14. As far as Mets go:

    Starting with:
    Don Kent
    Bob Copeland
    Barry Burbank
    Mark Rosenthal
    Harvey Leonard
    Matt Noyes

Honorable Mention: Stuart Siroka (He was a nut job, but was actually quite good)

    1. I’d rank Harvey ahead of Mark for many reasons. 🙂

      I remember Stuart.

What? No Dave Murray? No Todd Gross? What about “Altitude Lou” MacNally? 😉

      1. I neglected Tod Gross. Sorry bout that. I thought he was really good. I don’t understand why he is not still on air!

I agree Harvey may get the nod over Mark, but I liked Mark better. Much more personality. Now off air, Harvey probably
a much nicer person. I can only rate how I see them on air.

        Altitude lou? ha ha ha
Remember Norm MacDonald? Mr. Ultra conservative. Didn’t like him at all. Thought he was horrible.

I rate Bruce schwoegler as the # 1 Character of all mets,
even ahead of Al and Stuart. I loved him on air, only problem, his forecasts sucked.

        1. Word had it that Todd was nearly impossible to work with. I saw his ego in action first hand after he left in trying to work out the spotter network. It was not pretty. Good met but you have to work with people

              1. I was remiss in not adding that Todd was a very gracious person as long as things were going his way. I did his weather spotter website and another woman from spencer recorded spotters names and info. He had us both to the studio to brainstorm and to see how it worked behind the scenes and treated us like royalty.

        2. I actually liked Todd gross alot myself. I was following him when he left as he was doing an online weather site started by him, not sure why he stopped.

          1. I suspect because he needed income. He was asking for donations to keep the site going and then it seemed to disappear.

  15. Canada is gonna be “wicked cold” again next week. Some of it gets in here. The part yet to be figured out is if any significant, i.e., plowable snow takes place somewhere in and around next weekend.

    1. There is a chance. Of snow again for next weekend, seems like were in a snow cycle. Tk, off record not holding you to amounts, what do you think Boston Will receive out of Mondays event, and is it looking like a night storm. I have something to do Monday night but thinking I may be stuck at work doing snow removal. Thanks.

      1. Coating to 1.5 inch, depending on how much overrunning moisture we can squeeze out. If we can grab a mid level instability burst and swing it through here, double those amounts. But I’d put that at less than an even chance right now.

  16. I agree with you tk that it will be cold to start Jan but I continue to see hints and investigating a pattern change mid Feb, temps could start cold but have a mild finish, hope all is well 🙂

    1. That of course was part of 95-96 winter with over 100 inches of snow. The big one that winter was the blizzard of 96.

      1. Those were the good ol’ days when storm weren’t in a hurry to get out of here. It’s almost unheard of for a snowstorm to last 24 hours let alone 48 hours here in southern new england.

  17. What’s up with ground Hog Day? I think the snow saw it’s own shadow and high tailed it out of there. All models have Zilch for 2/2. Perhaps a little something the 3rd,4th or 5th???? We’ll keep watching.

    1. Speaking of Todd Gross. I remember him always saying that if we only have 6 weeks of winter left on feb 2 we are doing well. Maybe that’s not true any more but sure was

      1. Huh? Nope, not predicting anything. There just seems to be a parade of clippers projected by models (Euro and Gfs) in this time frame. I’m just hoping one tracks just right with the right short wave to do something. That is all. 😀

  18. I never cared for Todd Gross when I was going to school up in Massachusetts. I always thought he came across conceited. I liked Harvey and Barry. I know I am going to be biased here but I feel we had the best meteorologist in all of New England the late Dr. Mel Goldstein from WTNH in CT who passed away just over a year ago. He had a great passion for weather and always had that twinkle in his eyes when a big storm was approaching. He was diagnosed with multiple myloma in 1996 and was only given 33 months to live. How he battled and came to work in a tremendous amount of pain and always with a smile. Harvey knew Dr. Mel and thought he was one of the most courageous people he ever met when I he was up in Boston for treatments.

      1. Vicki he is truly missed and no one ever had anything bad to say about him. When he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away I shed some tears. He accomplished so much and not just an on air meteorologist but started the first weather program at western CT state university in Danbury.

  19. Do Rabbits Climb?

Reason I ask is because when I went out this AM, I saw animal tracks in the front year.
I took a close look at them and they most certainly looked like rabbit tracks to me (have seen rabbits in the yard before). I followed the tracks and then ended up at a chain link fence separating properties. Then the tracks picked up on the other side, almost as if the animal walked through the fence. Tracks were way too big for it to be the size to squeeze trough the fence. Mystery of the day. I figure the clever animal climbed up and over the fence???? 😀

    1. They jump but I’d think you’d be able to tell by larger prints where it landed. We had pet rabbits – along with about every other type of animal – and I have never seen them climb. They can fit under a fence easily but I’d think you’d see that in the snow. You would be surprised at the small openings they can get thru but I don’t think a chain link. Hmmmm. Raccoon ?

      1. No way. I know what raccoon prints look like. This was clearly a rabbit. 😀 Wasn’t an opossum. No tail prints. 😀

        1. Not a skunk either. Front and back prints way too far apart. (depicts hopping) No tail prints either.

      2. There were activity prints on the other side. Almost like pushing going on. Hmmm I guess maybe it did squeeze through. Amazing. 😀

        1. We have a family under our shed and unless we knew to look we wouldn’t see their entrance way. In the spring it is tons of fun to sit and watch the babies play.

    2. Yes rabits can climb. they climb trees, they climb fences. unless they are fat then know 😉 but most would prefer to jump. rabits can jump up to 15 feet. and can have a verticle jump up to 7 feet.

  20. 18Z NAM showing a nice little burst of snow for Monday Night. Up to 60 hours with 850MB 0C line getting close. More in a bit. 😀

      1. O.S. usually tough to eek out more than an inch or two max with WAA like that. Probably like 1/2 inch then ice then shower IMHO.

        1. Well,
That is exactly what the 12Z NAM was showing. This is
a dramatic shift from this Morning. We’ll see if 0Z says the same or reverts back. 😀

  21. Oh Salty you know better than jumping on the 18z nam.

I would be more concerned about this giving us les Qpf than the 12z GFS ECMWF are advertising and this goes the way of last night. If we do get more QPF then the mixed precip will become more predominant during the event and even to rain at the south coast. So take your pick les precip but a little colder or more precip but warmer? Still even in the colder scenario ratios are closer to climo of .12.

    1. Ok, if you think that was jumping all over it. 😀

I know what it is. I just thought it was worth posting since it was such a dramatic shift. 😀

  22. Great Saturday topic! As a transplanted family from the Midwest during my school days I was attracted to the roots and sensibilities of Jack (Utah and Idaho) Liz (Arkansas) Bruce (Wisconsin) and Bob (Ohio). I know Bruce, he does have a huge ego and has never gotten over the way it ended at wbz after 33 years. He is an excellent forecaster and taught me a lot about the hidden subtleties of forecasting NE weather. He is also a graduate of the University of Wisconsin where I earned my masters at. I consider Bruce, Barry, Dick, and Harvey all outstanding forecasters and this region is very lucky to have had such great on air Mets for so long!

    1. Never really cared for Dick Albert. He seemed like a great guy for sure, just never warmed up to his forecasting style and I think his accuracy wasn’t up to par.

I remember one time he really pissed me off. He was forecasting something like 3-6 or 4-8 inches of snow at his 6PM broadcast. I was out that night and about 10PM was noting how the snow was quite light and the MOON was shining through the thin clouds. I knew the system had taken a right and was more interested in the fish. Well, wouldn’t you know, he NEVER looked out the window and still had the same forecast at 11PM. It stopped snowing altogether shortly after his broadcast. 😀

Another time I was listening to him on the radio at 5:30PM on the way home from work. He was forecasting 5-10 inches of snow. As he was broadcasting, it was RAINING out. Never snowed a flake.

      😀 😀 😀

      1. Re: Bruce

I absolutely loved watching him. I don’t think he was as good a forecaster as you do, but I loved him anyway. Always enjoyed his broadcasts. He also did the commentary for an Museum of Science Omni theater presentation Oustanding job.

I remember him on the day of the Blizzard of 78. I was listening to him on the radio and at the time (hadn’t started snowing yet) he was calling for 18 inches, but indicated that the storm “may” become HISTORIC. He was clearly a profit that day. 😀

      2. Ditto that O.S.

Dickie stung me once with a blizzard forecast. Didn’t study for the high school final and woke up to bare ground and bright sunshine the next morning.

  23. OS this all fun.I love your posts…I was just giving you some crap…You are far more important to the vibrancy of this place than me so feel free to tell me to put a cork in it, anytime.

    1. No Way. 😀 I/We ALWAYS welcome your input. It is great to see you posting!!

Nah, I just didn’t think I was jumping all over the 18Z NAM. And you are correct. I certainly know better re: 18Z NAM. But the anomalous run was duly noted by me. I want to see if the 0Z NAM stays with it or reverts back to what was a more realistic 12Z NAM. 😀 I love how the various model runs ever so slowly converge on the correct solution. 😀

      1. Thanks man. I enjoy coming over here. January has been insane in a good way for me and kept me away from here due to time constraints, but when I can I love to read and post here.

    1. I just think that Al is too far out there. He does know his stuff though. I’ll give you that. He is farther out there than Stuart Siroka was! 😀

  24. Here is the answer to the AccuWeather Trivia Quiz. Last chance. Answer below.

What is the recommended indoor relative humidity?
    A. 20%
    B. 30%
    C. 40%
    D. 60%

    The answer is C, 40%.

  25. Lots of fun reading the comments since I went out on a little errand to FedEx in Wilmington. I took a cruise up the road to the Shriners Auditorim. I love those guys. They march in our local Halloween parade every year, and do great work, along with hosting all kinds of events.

BEAUTIFUL SUNSET. Took some nice photos on the road in the Wilmington / Reading / Stoneham / Woburn area.

O.S. I see JMA answered the question for you about the 18z. I agree with him. You do always have to watch for surprises with overrunning/warm fronts in the winter, but I don’t THINK that will be the case here.

        1. I do. Good group of guys at NWS. I know some of them. 🙂

          I think that’s a decent 1st map.

          1. I thought you might post that. 😀 I really don’t care for the Taunton Office. Grey, ME is much better as is Upton, NY. Just my thoughts. 😀

      1. Nah, he’s just enjoying the snow, Unless, of course, He was hitting that bottle of Whiskey hidden under that coat. 😀

  26. Barry is saying 1-3 for Monday and could hit 61 on Thursday, that would melt any snow from Monday. Storm starts by 4pm.

      1. It’s almost time for spring talk, I can feel it, it won’t be long, maybe 2-3 weeks, thanks for the blog, hope all is well 🙂

        1. You’d have had it right last year, and even the year before, with early mild weather and lack of snow. But this year I’m afraid you may be disappointed…

2 weeks from now puts us at February 9 and still about 40 days away from the Vernal Equinox. Still a very long way to go for winter. And this year it’s not going to not show up or quit early like a few recent ones. We’re in a new weather pattern.

  27. Since we know its going to be mild Tue/Wed and Thu do you think that they will plow and sand, again there is so much salt on roads I think they can take this storm off.

    1. No plowing. But I’m sure I’ll be in at 3am this week power washing. Snow removal Monday and washing Wednesday. I’ll take it. No plowing to your ridiculous sand statement that is,LOL.

    1. What a fun video. I have great memories of that storm. We headed to the barn in holliston to make sure the horses were curried and settled. While the kids did their thing I remember standing outside and just feeling something big was brewing. We lost power for a couple of days………….sighhhhh. Retrac I’m with you. Thanks for the link

    2. Wow! How could I ever forget that storm?! I was working at my first job as a registered nurse on the 3p-11p shift at the local hospital, 2 miles from my house. I drove home in that storm. Blizzard conditions, zero visibility. Took me an hour or more to get home on the main road which was plowed nicely. Just couldnt see a thing. Almost hit a telephone pole!

  28. Love the rain snow line marking.

Charlie how about every day when spring is near I will keep saying how close we are to the days get shorter and we are getting close to fall. I enjoy each day at a time. Life is too short to be looking weeks or months ahead.

What a storm that blizzard was!!!

  29. I logged on to that and was listening to wbz and weei coverage of the blizzard of 78. It was our first winter in marshfield and I was seven. In marshfield the no name storm was like that blizzard regarding all the destruction minus the snow. Homes just demolished. I also remember that April fool’s storm. If I remember correctly it was the day after easter I think, I could be wrong. I remember all my family was togeather so thinking it was maybe for that. I think we get another big history blizzard around here at some Time or another kind of storm that will make history.

  30. The current pressure in Reykjavik, Iceland (according to weather underground), not far from that monsterous North Atlantic storm, is 28.40 inches.

  31. Mid-winter observation:

I’ve been looking things over world-wide this winter and I’ve found this. The weather is behaving just like it should in winter! Regional variations and persistent patterns? Yes, for sure. But that happens.

The weather pattern is normal, which is actually achieved by a averaging a variety of “abnormalities” measured only against “normals” which again are achieved by the average of a bunch of “abnormalities”. See where I’m going here? 🙂

    Have a great Sunday!

Working on an update right after a run to the gas station and the McD’s drive thru for my mom (her Sunday morning indulgence) and a coffee for me and a listen to the great Steely Dan album “Pretzel Logic” – one of the best 34-minute trips in jazz-infused 1970s rock. 🙂

    1. Agree with you on the Steely Dan TK.

One of my fav’s of Donald Fagen on his own is “I.G.Y.” Turn it up!

      1. I’m a huge Steely Dan, Donald Fagen solo, and Walter Becker solo fan. I’ll always favor Don’s first solo album “The Nightfly”, but they are all excellent, Kamakiriad, Morph The Cat, and his brand new one, Sunken Condos. Have you heard the song “Weather In My Head”? One of his better releases.

  32. monday afternooon through tuesday night
    starts as snow for everyone.
changes to an icy mix from southwest to northeast.
changes to rain from south to north.
changes to rain after about an 1 inch falls across southeast mass
snow changes to an icy mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. from southwest to northeast. the set up will probably allow 1-3 inches with the heiviest amounts being in interior northeast mass and north central mass (high elevations) as the rain and mix will start to effect these areas last. isolated 4 inch amounts can not be ruled out. 3-6 inches across northern new england. but 1-3 across southern vt . Much needed rain will effect us wednesday night as a cold front moves through with thunderstorms and showers. Mondays commute looks to be messy expecially the evening commute. Going to cool back down next weekend, when im suppose to go skiing which is not always a good thing since i be probably skiing on ice because the precipiation will be in the form of rain across most of vt.

    1. While doubtful…hoping GFS pans out…work and kids and a snowy commute is why I dislike snow at timed.

        1. Because there has been widespread discussion about a
          “possible” Ground Hog Day Storm.

We want it all, you know. 😀

        2. I’ll focus on tomorrow. 🙂

O.S. is the official model poster for the blog…

Which is probably not the same kind of model poster he may have had in his room once upon a time. 🙂

          1. My Posters in my room were First Class weather Maps mailed to me daily from Washington DC.

            No girls
            No Sports Figures

            Just weather maps. 😀

      1. is it going to be to far south is the question as well most of those models show it going to south .. only time will tell.

  33. In the top graph which shows Boston’s seasonal snowfall from 1891 thru 1998, it’s fun to pick out trends. You can see a trend upward in snowfall heading into the 1990s.

There were a whole lot of lean snow years in the 1900s thru 1940s.

The most consistent “near normal” snow period was the late 1950s thru 1960s.

The least-snowy decade was the 1980s.

The snowiest decade on record was the 1990s.

Though not included in the graph, so far the 2000s are not far behind the 1990s, though not burning up records.

        1. It is now on the original comment above. 🙂 I believe I tapped the delete key when it was highlighted the first time. 🙂

          1. Awesome graph. You know all these years,
I was under the impression that January
was the snowiest month in Boston by a small amount over February. Have more recent years
            changed that?

            Thanks

            1. Nope, Feb has the highest average. March tends to just edge out December, lending support to what I say often: “It’s easier to snow in the early Spring than it is in the late Autumn / early Winter.”

              1. I have seen other data that contradicts this. As I said, my whole life Jan snowfall was more than February.

                I found this:

I also found your graph. Where is the really OFFICIAL data?

                2. This is from the City of Boston Website:

  34. Just watched the channel 5 forecast with aj Burnett. So great to see him on board with what I think is the best weather team in new england. I hope they keep him, he is a great met. Have a nice day. Going to gas up the truck for the first time, ouch. The dealer filled it for me when I bought it.

    1. To think there is an oil field under the Rockies that dwarks the whole Middle East and we can’t touch it… 🙁

  35. From NWS re Tomorrow:

MODELS INDICATE A BRIEF PERIOD OF ENHANCED MID LEVEL FGEN ASSOCD WITH THE WARM AIR ADVECTION SO COULD SEE MODERATE SNOW FOR A BRIEF TIME IN THE AFTERNOON.

  36. Thanks for that link Old Salty.
Its not going to be a lot of precipitation but the timing is not good for the pm commute and to me the most problems on the roads are when we get these small events in the winter.

    1. Agreed 100%…these suck. One of the worst time slots…and these ones people don’t pay too much attention to are the ones that often have surprises.

  37. Wife and I saw Zero Dark Thirty last evening.
No Matter what your political affiliation, this movie was stunningly awesome!
Many graphic scenes, but they were essential.

  38. I agree with NEWW for CT since the future cast models are indicating a general 1-2 inches earlier this morning.
I would expect winter weather advisories to be posted for parts of SNE later today as a result of this having an impact on the pm commute.

    1. I think Boston will come in at about two inches, less down here in Plymouth county and a tad more north of the city. Any snow around will be bare as we warm up for Wednesday and rain coming. Although I welcome the warm temps, to me this is just a teaser because it will not stay warm. I like the warm weather as most of you know.

  39. This is looking like a level 1 snow event for SNE. (Dusting- 4 inches)
The warm up is brief and not only the rain comes through with the cold front but the possibility of gusty winds. There is even the possiblity of severe storms with this front in parts of the Mid Atlantic. No severe weather here thankfully.

  40. Is there a time cram on this that anyone can provide. Thank you :). I have a friend who was leaving Maine to head to MA around 5:00 pm but is now thinking of leaving around 1:00. It’s about a 2-hr drive

      1. It may end up being a “time cram” for some people that try to get things done before the potential slick roads. 😉

  41. Hi trolls! Keep on knocking. But let me warn you that eventually your hand will really start to hurt. 😛 Have a nice day!

  42. just some of what a hundred or so feet can do to you. one time a similar set up to this storm. it was a few years ago. a couple of inches of snow then it changed to sleet/freezing rain mix for most of billerica while the southeast section of town and the center turned to rain. the rest of the town delet with . 2 to .25 ice acreation before the change over. ( this also haveing the rest of the area being snow to rain as well.) Oh also the first time that nuttings lake is totally frozen in over 2 years
