Saturday Morning Update

8:53AM

High pressure dominates with heat through the weekend, though today will be the hottest of the 2 days as the winds are a little more southerly by Sunday off Atlantic waters. The humidity will be creeping up but will probably never fully reach oppressive levels. A slow transition will take place Sunday night through Monday as a cold front slogs across the region from west to east, producing showers and thunderstorms. This sets up cooler and drier weather for the middle of next week.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 88-93 except cooler some south-facing coastal locations. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 65-70 except lower 70s urban centers. Wind light SW.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 85-90 except cooler in all south-facing coastal locations.Β  Wind SW to S 10-20 MPH with gusts around 30 MPH.

MONDAY: Showers/thunderstorms. Low 66. High 77.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 56. High 74.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 58. High 75.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 57. High 76.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 57. High 77.

  1. Thanks, TK!

My thoughts and prayers go out for those affected by yesterday’s and last night’s tornadoes. I got up around 1:00 a.m. to get a drink of water and watched TWC and couldn’t believe there were still warnings out.

Frankly, I really think after the past few yrs. and this season so far, Tornado Alley should make having some sort of shelter mandatory for homes, offices, etc. I believe it would save many more lives. I can’t understand why they haven’t done that yet.

Around here it is summerlike. I am enjoying it to a certain degree – the humidity isn’t that bad – yet. And at times there has been a breeze for ventilation. We haven’t put on the air conditioner yet – maybe later. Nxt. wk. looks to be really nice – thinking we may head up to Gloucester/Rockport for a day trip, we will see.

    1. Grammar correction – Tornado Alley should have some sort of shelter mandatory for homes, offices, etc.

    2. Hopefully that trip to Cape Ann will work out for you Rainshine. We love that area, but just done seem to get up that way aften enough.

  2. B for the quiz answer…

My friend has been out there chasing for the past few weeks with a chase tour. The tour is now done but he’s staying a few more days on his own.

He had to get out of his motel to get out of the path of the tornado and was tied up in some of the traffic but is safe. The tornado did end up missing his motel by 1/2 to 1 mile. He has seen several tornadoes, taken some great pics and video, and gotten bonked on the head by a 1 inch hailstone from a low-precip super cell during this trip. Quite an adventure!

  3. Thanks TK.
As I mentioned in the last blog today is the two year anniversary of the Springfield tornado. Its the first time in my life I ever remember seeing a tornado on live television in New England. The twister EF 3 in strength on the ground for 39 miles which is rare here in this part of the country. Lets hope we never see that again.

  4. What a spectacular day. Its 90.3 with a 63 dP but there is a lovely breeze. We just finished a 4 hour power wash of the deck so that may have kept us cool too πŸ˜‰

    1. I am doing some outside cleaning this afternoon with full expectation of getting soaked. I have the pleasure of spraying down my stairway to the 2nd floor to get all the dust and pollen off of it. That’s always a fun job. πŸ™‚ Seriously. πŸ™‚

I’d have gone to the beach for a very early beach day but 1) I had lots to do here, some work, some fun, 2) the winds are gusting to 25+ MPH at the beach anyway, and 3) the water is still freezing and the air is too hot to NOT go in the water hahahahaha! Beach soon either way. πŸ™‚

      1. Insane. I would SO do that. Not necessarily drive INTO the tornado but I could handle the situation. I fear lightning. I am not afraid of wind. Debris, yes… So there is a fine line here.

      1. Indeed, but some of these chaser people have lost all of their
marbles. They’re just getting way too close!

        Death toll now at 9.

Absolutely incredible. I’d have a shelter and if not, I’d have
packed up the family and gotten out of town WAY before
any chance of these devils forming.

What a place to live. Insanity if you ask me.

  5. Patriots mini camp ONLY 39 days away!! Ill be there!! Way to hot for me, this weather makes me sorta sleepy and not wanna eat

          1. Also some of the ocean water just off of ri and ct coast are closer to the mid 60’s πŸ™‚

  6. Well summer is here 12 weeks of warm humid weather, maybe some would still say we have a snow potential but anyways good day all and keep the ac on πŸ™‚

    1. Yes, a-rod would certainly say we still have snow potential. πŸ˜›

Me? I called it over after last weekend after it did indeed snow on the border of my forecast area. πŸ™‚

Well, another forecast nailed by yours truly. They didn’t give me a degree for nothing. πŸ˜€

  7. HOT! HOT! HOT!

My cats are happy but miserable… trying to find any corner, cool surface, dark place they can fit in. Meanwhile they are rolling around, exposing their bellies, waiting to be brushed and spoiled. Moments ago my black cat Piper was just in the window that is behind my laptop, fan blowing on her.

I feel like a cat myself today…haha! Though, I am enjoying this thoroughly. BUT…I do wish I was at the beach! It would be so hot and crowded there, I know…but I am craving it so bad. I LOVE the beach. I know it is too early in the season for the water to be a touchable temperature….but I don’t mind. I love searching for seaglass, rocks, and seashells, and feeling where the water meets the sand under my feet. I love taking pictures of the ocean, and looking way way out there. I love the smell, the feel of it, all of it. I can’t wait till the first beach trip of the season!

Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather today, and staying cool at the same time! πŸ˜‰

    1. Go ahead. Admit that you were looking at the Hampton Beach web cam at the same time I was wishing you could be there.

Oh wait, I sent you the link…

    2. I felt as if I were at the beach with your description. I so would love to retire in a house that overlooked the ocean. I’d never leave the window or the deck except to explore the beach. The oceans power and its calmness never lose their lure. Sighhhh

      1. Oh I would LOVE to live on the beach…the only thing that would bother me is the threat of the ocean taking my house away…with storms, and all that.

        1. That would worry me too so I figured a house set up high with an ocean view in the distance would work well……if we could afford it that is ……and we can’t …..sighhhh πŸ˜‰

          1. Hey, maybe someday if I become a famous writer I can buy you a beach house πŸ˜‰ And TK wants a screen house, a porch, and a pool in his yard. I’ll get right on that πŸ˜‰

  8. Mac is watching the golf and is in his glory. He got a better score on the front 9 last week by several strokes than tiger has…..well the course might have been a tad easier that mac played but We won’t tell him πŸ™‚

    1. A superior show, with 4 amazing actors, that could make you heartily laugh and cry within 30 minutes.

    1. I saw that on BZ. We almost hit a turkey the other day. They sure are big enough to do damage

    1. Thanks longshot. I don’t like it when mac gets the answer right and I don’t ….sniff πŸ˜‰

  11. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

The β€œYear without a Summer” in 1816 was caused by….
    A. Volcano
    B. Greenland Block
    C. Low Solar Output
    D. No Bermuda Highs

    Answer later today.

  12. For the trivia question I am going with A.
Last day of the heat and humidity as we transition to a much more comfortable airmass. CT River Valley west is the area to watch for the possibilty of strong to locally severe storms. Any storm that does become severe has the potential for strong wind gusts, heavy rain, and vivid lightning. The rest of SNE non severe storms.

    1. Thanks JJ. Do you have a sense of the timing? I’m heading to a meeting this afternoon and its a hike from the building to the parking lot and I wouldn’t do it in a thunderstorm. I was thinking of getting a ride if the storms are expected any time before 5:00.

  13. Hi Vicki….. The thunderstorm activity should be moving after 5pm. I would take the umbrella. As I said earlier I think for your area the thunderstorms will be non severe. With that said heavy rainfall and lightning will be possible.

  14. 99% sure its A, however, I could be wrong, but I think it was combined with a period of low solar output too

  15. The move in went well, other than moving on the hottest day of the year so far. It wouldnt have been bad except the AC in the new house didnt want to work. I paid extra for that, lol.

    1. Oh ugh of all days not to have the AC work. Glad it went well. We bought our house 34 years ago yesterday and moved in 34 years ago today. There are wonderful memories in these walls. I wish you as many wonderful memories !!

    2. That is not good :(. Glad the rest went well. You will be very happy once you settle in. We are just started going through everything we threw in the basement three years ago when we moved.

  16. A or C but im going with A.

Last day of the heat and humidity πŸ™ hope there is alot more to come.
thunderstorm threat decreased since the front comes over us at night

  17. Sad story. Who were these guys????

    The Weather Channel
    Statement from The Weather Channel:

It was with great sadness that The Weather Channel learned of the passing of Tim and Paul Samaras and Carl Young as a result of the El Reno Tornado. Many of us were fortunate to have worked with them and have great admiration for their work. They went in the field focused on collecting data to enable meteorologists to further the science behind tornadoes which we know has and will help to save countless lives. Our community has suffered a terrible loss and our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones.

      1. He was one of the groups of chasers that the Discovery Channel followed for a couple of years. Between these three and the Weather Channel team that got rolled in that tornado, seems like that storm got the better of a number of pros.

    1. NWS poo poos the watch that far East and steadfastly maintains that
the threat is only in Western Sections. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

      1. Wasn’t there a tornado in Stoughton about a month ago – and I don’t think there were any watches or warnings out for that area? Frankly, the way the weather has been going, maybe they are just covering themselves. And, like last wk., even after dark you can get strong rotation around here. I am hoping we all just get garden type thunderstorms. But it sure is nice out now – ventilating breeze keeping it not too bad. (Maybe the wind is a factor in creating severe storms?)

  18. I am still thinking CT River Valley West as the area with the best shot at seeing strong to locally severe storms in SNE. The storms out west moving in a northeast heading.
I am just waiting to see if anything develops where I am.

  19. Actually, if the wind is from the south-southwest, I think the water is still not that warm off the south coast (New Bedford, etc.) and that could weaken any storms. And it’s pretty windy out. At least a strong southerly wind this early in the season used to weaken storms from what I remember.

  20. To add to Rainshine’s point above ….

Looking at a radar loop, while there is some eastward translation to the line, the motion of the storms embedded within are following a more north-northeastward motion and given the ridge’s slow breakdown, a thunderstorm would almost have to develop near coastal SE Connecticut to hit the Boston area. In short, there doesnt appear to be the east-southeast charging of a squall line that we sometimes see.

  21. Yeah I have noticed that with all the cells so far moving in that northeast heading. So far strong winds the biggest threat with these storms along with the heavy rainfall and vivid lightning.

    1. Although I think they could have made a better effort to tranquilize, I suppose
I don’t have any real problem with the shooting, after all, it was in a pretty densely populated area. However, the animal rights folks might not be too happy.

      1. I wish they could have tranq’d it but wonder if they were afraid that it might fall onto pike before they had the right tranq equipment

  23. Old Salty nothing is close to me. We got one severe thunderstorm warning here in CT which looks like its going to clip far northwestern CT before moving into western MA.
Most of the activity has been up north today.

  24. Temp went from 92 to 86. Wind is fierce. While I was out I guess no one noticed the umbrella on the porch was up. We are always really good about that and it has a heavy base. The wind picked it up and took the glass table with it. Those tables shatter into a gazillion tiny pieces so the deck we spent upwards of 3 hours power washing yesterday had glass in every crack and crevice.

      1. Sadly I was at a meeting so couldn’t help with cleanup……very sad indeed πŸ˜† and the table was at least 7 years old so owes us nothing and the best part is no one was in deck to be hurt. So its all good !!!

        1. Vicki, so sorry about your table. But the most important thing is that no one was hurt. The wind got very powerful today – it’s starting to cloud up now from the northwest.

          1. Hi rainshine. You are absolutely right. A table is just a thing.

I’m hoping it rains. I don’t have the energy to water the plants and they need it πŸ™‚

            1. I think we will get at least some rain overnight – if not tomorrow. They say the rain could be heavy, especially during the morning.

  25. South wind. Storms not gonna make it into most areas inside 495 north of the Pike and in most areas south of the Pike, at least in terms of the big guys.

Later tonight, more general showers and embedded thunder should be more widespread.

    Working on The Week Ahead…

    1. Thanks TK. We gave up and are watering the driest plants. Right now everything is staying west of us. Just started raining in Uxbridge. Ill do gardens in morning if we don’t have rain overnight.

      1. We’ll get SOME rain but I really don’t know how much.

Despite recent significant rain, we still are in a long term drought. That’s not going anywhere anytime soon. πŸ™‚

        1. Even with the rain we have had the earth here is horribly dry. You are right. It’ll take a whole lot more than we have had

          1. We haven’t had any rain here and the ground is still moist esp in more shady areas from the monsoons 5 days ago πŸ™‚

  26. extremly threathening looking clouds to my northwest and west and the clouds are moving really fast.
winds are around 10-14mph with gusts up to 25

  27. Are you serious? It seems as if we got another 2-4 inches of rain this week like we got last week people would continue to say we r in a drought, I guess no matter how much rain we get will always be in a rain deficit idk I haven’t even rec my customers up there watering yet to everyday, last year I had everyone watering everyday by now, but lawns look great, goodnight all πŸ™‚

    1. Charlie we have not had a lot of rain here. We have yet to be over an inch. You know that there is more to MA than your area right? I know for a fact Uxbridge- also what you said is in your area – hasn’t had much either

    2. Well, as a senior agricultural meteorologist that worked in the field for nearly 2 decades and monitored soil moisture for crop areas worldwide, I have some idea of the situation. Is it severe here? Certainly not. Is it significant? Yes, because a short dry spell will put us into more significant drought just like that.

My rain deficit for the year-to-date is about 5 inches. That is significant. Some areas have had more rain, so they are in better shape, but those areas are in the minority.

    1. Moist top soil here still esp in more shady areas like I said, in all sun or mostly sun sure if not watering that summer sun will dry the crowns out,

      1. Definitely moist here too. We have had over 2 inches of rain in last 10 days while others had close to nothing. Wish we could share!

    1. Every other day 35 min’s sure, normally I would say everyday but not this year πŸ™‚

      1. I just asked SIL in Uxbridge. He’s watering every day and his response to are you dry was….are you kidding? Ridiculously dry.

        1. Hmmm I have 33 customers in the Uxbridge/Douglas area, I also just did a seminar at uri in n.kingston on watering, he shouldn’t be watering everyday as it promotes a lot of unwanted diseases such as red thread, leaf spot etc etc, I have everyone watering every other day as of now until maybe next week depending on humidity and weather πŸ˜‰

          1. His lawn is incredible – always is. It’s just horribly dry where he is even with the watering.

  28. Sorry About your troubles Vicki. Sounds like our kind of luck.

There once was a line of storms. Don’t look now, but they have gone poof in
    the night! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

    Not as single drop here!

    1. Thanks OS. To top it off mac went out to get an extra table from out shed that we can use interim and was attacked by some oddly aggressive bees. He’s fine. We overloaded him with bacitracin and he says the only side effects are a craving for honey…..one of those weekends where its a comedy of errors but nothing we can’t laugh at πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

And I’m glad we watered the plants that were showing stress.

  29. 7 or 8 out of 10 of my customers have irrigation and will be watering until Halloween then they get shut off between Halloween and Christmas so unless it gets above 85 for highs day after day any browning will be on properties that don’t water or are watering very little

    1. If it gets above 85 or 90 degrees for a full week then the lawns no matter if your watering or not will try and brown but any amount of watering even once a week is beneficial to the lawn

    2. when there are water bans in a town like there always is you can not water every other day. one day . even houses the other odd houses.
