  1. Thanks, TK.

Someone posted about the early spring in Western Europe. Note, they never had a winter this year. 2013-2014 will be known as the non-winter in Western Europe. It’s been in the 50s/60s and sunny for a long stretch in Holland. This is NOT atypical in March at all. I lived there for 15 years. Holland often has a wonderful March, April, and May, especially compared to NE. It’s the one time during the year that the weather is often tranquil, without constant drizzle or light rain that often characterize summer, fall, and winter.

I can’t believe how cold it is and feels today. Yet again it looks like we’ll have a day during which it doesn’t get above freezing. Incredible for mid March, particularly given the number of days below freezing we’ve already experienced. Basically this week’s (Sunday through Sunday) weather will be about as cold as it often is in mid January, with only a couple of days in the low to mid 40s.

  2. The relentless cold is really starting to piss me off now. Six more weeks of winter? Looks like it.

  3. Cold doesn’t look to be giving up looking at the latest CPC outlook. Much below normal temps in both the 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks.
Winter is not going to go quietly this year.

  4. Still a lot of ice on the Charles. Have never seen this much ice on the Charles in mid March in my lifetime. I doubt whether it’ll all melt this week. Could there be some ice on parts of the Charles in early April. That would be astounding, but is possible if we can believe the long-range.

I respectfully disagree with those who say it felt comfortable today. I’m a cold weather person, but at a certain point my body also wants it to feel seasonable. Today’s 34 (it did get above freezing) was not seasonable and did not feel comfortable. Quite frankly, I don’t care about the sun’s angle when the wind is blowing hard and it’s cold outside. It felt like January, but looked like March. Very odd. I’m also hearing very little from the birds these days. A bit yesterday during my 16 mile run, but they became very quiet today on my run. I’m sure the animals are `sick’ of the cold. They don’t know better, but their instinct is telling them one thing and the weather outside another.

    1. I’m trying, John. Yesterday was my longest run thus far. I’ve done half-marathons (13 milies). But, I was told that I needed to get up to 18 miles or so prior to doing an actual marathon. I hope to do the Boston marathon this year.

      1. You mean next year? To late now to get a number and no bandits allowed this year. If you can do 16 you can run any marathon. Good for you.

      2. 16 is very impressive!!! Do you participate in runs in the area? Son was thinking of doing marathon again this year but he runs as a bandit (donating generously) and I think bandits won’t be allowed this year. So many will be disappointed but it makes absolute sense if that is the decision.

        1. Absolutely no bandits this year Vicki. Close to 4,000 law enforcement out in full force for this year.

  5. How long do I have to wait to remove tree trunks, existing grass and add Loam. Is the frost still there from the winter?

  6. This year’s marathon may be involve 36,000 runners which would be the 2nd or 3rd most for any marathon. The number of police will be double. In my town, the police chief told the entire force … “you are either running or working” on April 21st. SWAT teams will be in Boston.Interestingly there have been scattered (and probably unsubstantiated) reports of more extreme measures such as use of satellites and drones.

The number of spectators is expected to double. The race goes right by my home and I hope the weather is good. I love watching that race.

  7. Starting to look over the brackets and will begin to fill them out the next couple of days. I love this time of year on the sports calendar and I was fortunate to be at The Final Four and National Championship game in 96 when it was played in East Ruthford, NJ.

  8. 1000s of spectators will be there for this one regardless of what the weather is that day. This will be a symbolic day. Anybody that goes needs to understand the new rules in place or they will be turned away. This marathon will also be viewed worldwide.

  9. Its amazing that the Ocean City, MD webcams have snow falling and accumulating in the background.

How deep and far covering this cold air is impressive. I was outside some today and the sun had some real strength to it, but didnt stand a chance in moderating the air much.
