The Week Ahead

9:44PM

A squeeze play will be ongoing during the next 3 days, which are the final 3 days of April. This will be happening because broad low pressure to the east of New England and a large scale trough and storm system in the Midwest will sandwich a narrow high pressure area over the northeastern US, extending down from a larger high over eastern Canada. The resultant weather for southeastern New England from this set-up will be cloudiness dominating with temperatures near to mostly below normal.

The low pressure area from the west should finally push far enough east to bring its rain into the region by Thursday, tapering to showers at the end of the week but remaining somewhat unsettled right through the weekend as it takes a long while for that broad trough to push across the region.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 50s coast, around 60 inland. Wind N-NE 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows around 40. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Highs around 50, 40s coast. Wind NE-E 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Low 39. High 49.

THURSDAY: Cloudy. Rain likely. Low 42. High 54.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 45. High 63.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers. Lows 46. High 61.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Low 44. High 62.

  1. Vicki, i saw your posts on the last blog about grubs. If you have active grubs and want to try and get rid of them now, make sure u apply a strong knockdown type of instant grub killer. A season-long grubEx type control will not work right now as the larvae are far too mature and will be ineffective. If you want to prevent them (which is the most effective method), best time to apply the grubEx is when they are in beetle form and just starting to lay their eggs. This is usually around mid to late July. You should try and get it down late June to early July to allow time for the chemicals to absorb into the soil so when the eggs hatch later in the summer/early fall, the young larvae will die.

  2. Thanks TK.

What a DREADFUL forecast for the beginning of this week.

Let’s see, today is April 28th and we’re still talking about high temperatures
    in the 40s for 4/29 and 4/30???? !!!!! GIMMIE A BREAK!!!!

    THIS WEATHER BLOWS CHUNKS!!!

We suffer through Winter and then get greeted with this CRAP!!!

    How nice!!

Thank you, give me another day in the 40s!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. It’s New England os, most people think winters are worse, we basically spend half our life’s in crappy weather living here, I’m not disrespecting anyone, just stating the facts. Just imagine if you didn’t like winter or spring, you probably would comment like this everyday ๐Ÿ™‚ good day os

      1. Charlie,

The ONLY weather I can’t stand in New England is this
Suck Bag Spring weather. All the rest I love!!!!

ELSE I would have moved a long time ago.

I love having the 4 seasons. It’s just when Winter’s Cold has left,
we do NOT need this ICE BOX SPRING weather to replace it, that is all. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

      2. Charlie…..you spend half your live in what you perceive to be crappy weather. Because it is crappy to you, it is not a fact. It is your opinion which only relates to you. And that, my friend, is a fact.

  3. Already 51.1 degrees out at 9:20am, thininking 61-62 degrees for a high today, lots of sun here. Good day everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. At Boston:

      Weather: Partly Cloudy
      Temperature: 50.0 ยฐF (10.0 ยฐC)
      Dewpoint: 35.1 ยฐF (1.7 ยฐC)
      Relative Humidity: 57 %
Wind: North at 9.2 MPH (8 KT)

I’ll bet that Wind turns into the NorthEast before too long.
Of course, what else is new?

  4. Getting my trees treated today bc if those green worms that kill them, those bugs seem to be getting worst yr after yr
    Sunny 52.2 heading out ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. this was wednesday of last week…. should have posted this sooner but really had no time. had not even been able to look at weather models i been so busy.
Before class( was out sick last day of class so i asked a friend is there anything that is due in the next week)
    freind. says no
go into class.proffessor writes on board. online quiz due 8am friday

    All due by friday
lightning flashes and boom. then starts to rain.
(we were all mad but my freind Justin, stated”matt…. just because we were just ****** does not mean you can start a storm over it.”
    All hail me lol ๐Ÿ˜›

  6. Boston’s wind is from 360, however, Beverly is from 010 and Plymouth is
    from 030.

Boston was 350, so it HAS turned. It will be off the water very soon, I fear.

    1. To answer your question hadi it’s tough. It’s not the poop that hurts it it’s the urine. If you have grass there all ready just constantly try to feed it so it will grow more with watering. If at all possible keep dogs from area and let them do there business during a walk around the bl

        1. Thanks John! I assumed that, we do walk he but our year is sloped so it’s not a great yard to start with so we let her use it all the time. I get some nice areas, but don’t invest any money in the yard ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. And there it is!!!! Boston’s famous EAST WIND!!!!!!

    At NOON:

    281554 BKN041 BKN200 10 50 36 0909

That’s right, wind at 090 degrees or Straight out of the EAST!!!

Temperature dropped from 53 to 50 and will drift through the 40s I’m sure!!!!

    Really NICE!!!!!!

  8. After a promising morning, now almost completely overcast and 53 in walpole. Wind shifted here to NE. Still nice out but by no means warm

  9. 56.7 here in JP, however, at the *(!@#*&!@*&&(!*@#&*#& Airport
    it is 48 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. THE WSR-88D VWPS IN CNTRL AND NRN MS SHOW LOOPED HODOGRAPHS
WITH 0-3 KM STORM RELATIVE HELICITIES IN THE 450 TO 500 M2/S2 RANGE.
THIS SHOULD SUPPORT A THREAT FOR STRONG TORNADOES AS SUPERCELLS
CONTINUE TO INTENSIFY. DUE TO THIS IMPRESSIVE SHEAR ENVIRONMENT…AN
OUTBREAK OF TORNADOES APPEARS LIKELY AND THE AREA FROM CNTRL MS
EXTENDING NEWD INTO NW AL WILL BE UPGRADED TO HIGH RISK FOR THE 20Z
      OUTLOOK.

          1. Thanks TOM. I “assume” so.

This is a freightening situation down there.
            Awful. I feel for them.

Not sure I have ever seen so many warnings
            out at the same time.

  10. With pictures like this, its going to be a miracle if no loss of life has occurred this afternoon.

    1. I fear the worst. Have to run. May chime in via mobile during the next couple of hours or so.

  11. Wow …. Watching some coverage on TWC and the radar signature on these storms is scary.

That signature hook echo on the southwest side of these supercells, with the classic debris ball look.

  12. Terrible day down in parts of Mississppi and the tornado threat unfortunately is not over yet.

  13. Watching TWC also…thanks Tom. Still lots of warnings out there. Does anyone know if this line is apt to head to Atlanta.

    1. Not sure about this particular line, but I think Atlanta had a torcon of 6/10 for later tonight or tomorrow.

        1. Thank you VERY much Tom. I’ll give my sister in law a call. She is typically pretty aware of weather but it always helps to talk to someone.

  14. Getting hot in the far southern US …

Think I saw 92F in Orlando and 98F in Brownsville, TX, along with a 103F (probably Loredo, TX).

  15. Thoughts and prayers with those impacted by the tornadoes.

Up here a different story. I was fascinated watching how the cloudiness presented itself today. It wasn’t just clouds rolling in off the ocean. You could see a lift zone moving slowly northeastward up against the ocean air flowing in, setting up an area of cloudiness that at first only covered a relatively small area, and then expanded.

  16. Couple cooler days then back in the 60’s, weekend looks nice with temps in the 60’s

    Temp 48.8 degrees partly cloudy

  17. I tried to post early this am but messed it up with my cell phone. Anyway, there are still 3 snow hills at the Riverside T stop on the shady side of the parking lot.

  18. My heart always goes out to all affected by these Springtime tornado outbreaks. I’ve been following the WC most of the day, along with some storm chasers. Very impressive listening to Dr. Greg Forbes tonight and his knowledge of these systems. Didn’t know this, but he studied with Dr. Ted Fujita

  19. Dr. Greg Forbes great meteorologist when it comes to severe weather. Tornado threat now into Alabama.

  20. Thanks, TK.

Yesterday I was watching TWC most of the day into the evening – and I got up for awhile around 1:00 a.m. and they were still following severe storms and a possible tornado. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the severe weather. It’s both amazing and horrible how these storms continue – and many over the same areas over again. This all shows how the weather is still uncontrollable and ‘though we have come a long way w/radars, etc. – and many more lives are saved – we can’t prevent the tragedies. Maybe someday we will be able to do that – but that would not be for a long time, I’m guessing.

  21. So, so Sad. The loss of one life is way too many and we lost 28 yesteday! 28!!!

    Tornado Central Tornado Central
Tornado Outbreak Kills at Least 28 as Threat Continues For South on Tuesday.

Even with today’s technology, 28 lives lost due to tornadoes.

Makes me wonder if warnings were ignored??

Most tornado warnings based on radar signature are false alarms. I believe because
the rotation seen is aloft and it doesn’t necessarily mean that it has translated to
    the ground.

This needs improvement and I am not sure what that is.

Perhaps the spotter network needs to be increased?

  22. On another note, Another SUCK BAG say here in New England. Ah yes, New England
    weather at its finest!!! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

43.3 here with a strong East wind. Temperature NOT destined to go up much.

  23. Speaking of increasing the spotter network, I will be attending a NWS spotter training session in Walpole at the public library on thurs May 8th from 7-10pm if anyone is interested

            1. WHY is the Moderate risk BEHIND
where all the current action is?

Does the SPC expect additional convection
              to erupt there later?????

  24. I hate seeing all these tornadoes and death and destruction. This is weather at its absolute worst ๐Ÿ™

    1. I’m with you Ace. Horrific.

I’m afraid they’re in for it again today, even in areas that were hit
      yesterday.

  25. Charlie says:
    April 29, 2014 at 10:04 AM

“Beautiful day down here, truck says 45 degrees. Just finished my 10th mowing of the year and put down some weed and feed” ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. How can anyone say beautiful day? Charlie is just like what he complains about in winter when we say snow is coming and he says we are exaggerating. He does it this time of year ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Just having a little fun with it today, seemed like the blog needed a bit of humor to lighten things up. Charlie, no disrespect, just having a little fun ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. TK SOMEONE HAS SIGNED IN AS CHARLIE, THAT COMMENT IS NOT FROM ME, IVE BEEN IN A DENTIST CHAIR WITH MY MOUTH OPEN SINCE 8:30am, WONDERING WHO THE LOSER IS WHO DID THIS? TK PLEASE INVESTIGATE IF YOU HAVE TIME,, PUTTING DOWN A WEED AND FEED LOL 10TH MOWING LOL,, ACE IM NOT MAD, ITS ALL GOOD, BUT IM NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS LOSER WHO DID THIS

    1. Ah geez, didnt think id cause so many problems ๐Ÿ™ Relax Charlie, if u look, that post was under my name, my name is in bold as the comment header, i just put what I think u would have said this morning in the post as a joke. No one signed in under your name or anything, no worries. Sorry for the confusion

      1. No disrespect meant charlie, i was just trying to lighten the mood a bit ๐Ÿ™‚ I mowed yesterday for the first time

  27. Its shapping up to be unfortunatley another day with tornadoes in parts of the south. This storm system is moving very slowly producing this multi day severe weather outbreak thanks to a negative NAO.

    1. Correct. The CURRENT threat is fast waning and about over, HOWEVER,
later this afternoon a new very dangerous threat will develop. All eyes will
be on the Deep South late this PM and this evening and that, unfortunately, includes the greater ATLANTA area.

      1. With the dynamics with this storm system even when the daytime heating is gone tornadoes and other modes of
severe weather could happen. Moderate risk up for parts of the Deep South and once again with the ingredients
there would not be surprised to see long tracked tornadoes.

  28. That link you posted shows just how slow this storm system is moving. Normally the thunderstorms roll through and the next day the weather calms down. This case your looking at an area such as Atlanta with back to back days of POTENTIAL severe weather.

    1. Yes.

I just hope that any tornadoes that develop today and tomorrow rumble
      through uninhabited areas.

    2. JJ – I had said that last night also. It seems as if these systems are not going anywhere quickly.

  29. OS – I can’t thank you enough. She is on the southeast side of Atlanta but that line is frighteningly close for today.

      1. If that doesn’t work and I agree to try Mill Wharf first, Cask and Flagon has a brunch. The Atlantica in Cohasset used to have an exceptional MOther’s Day brunch but I don’t know if they still do and if it is still good. I’d check reviews. My oldest was married there in 2007 and the food was great then.

        1. Yup. That’s not good for this situation.

I guess SPC expected RAPID development of
SUPER CELL storms capable of rotation and dropping
tornadoes, some of which could be STRONG. Let us hope not. We don’t need any EF3, EF4, OR EF5 storms.

  30. There is progress being made during this block with our cool, gray weather.

Check out the temps around Hudson Bay. 30s and 40s …. much, much milder up there than it has been.

    http://weather.unisys.com/surface/sfc_map.php?image=sfc&inv=0&t=l3&region=ec

Thats the long term key to helping it warm up in New England later in May and into June.

Have to get rid of the snow cover in eastern Canada and the ice on Hudson Bay.

Today has been a profitable weather day for making some progress towards that accomplishment.

    1. We have an optimist among us.
Please don’t count me as one.

You are correct, except for one thing.
We still have ALL of that COLD COLD COLD ocean to the
      East and Northeast!!!!!!!!

      1. The only thing that warms that up is ABUNDANT sunshine!!!!
AND it doesn’t hurt to have WARM weather with that sunshine!

I don’t see much of that anytime soon! ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

        1. True, although perhaps the mid 60s Fri and Sat will feel warm after the chilly and damp 40s. ๐Ÿ™‚

            1. I can’t tell you how many times in this situation I have seen this kind of forecast ONLY to see the 40s remain for a week!!!

              1. Good point ! Well, I hope they come true in this instance, because with all the TV stations and TK (who is usually conservative) saying 60F+ Fri and Sat, I booked into camping this coming weekend. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I do wonder what constitutes and INTENSE TORNADO?

Is that EF3 and above? OR EF4 and above?

      It’s either or for sure.

I would not categorize and EF2 as an intense tornado.
I guess one could argue that an EF3 is intense. Certainly an EF4.

      Thoughts?

    2. That area has the highest dewpoints (above 70F) and the surface winds are S to SE, while the upper level winds are from the SW.

That twist in the clouds in eastern Arkansas looks very impressive. I’m quite concerned what may happen in that watch area the next 2-5 hrs.

        1. I was scratching my head when I saw it – had to look a couple of times

I’m not seeing any tornado warnings in the south at the moment – or wasn’t a few mintues ago

        2. Yesterday evening, a storm blew up in west-central Georgia, also separate from the main activity and it had a tornado warning with it briefly.

      1. IE makes me nervous – I switched to firefox years ago and just switched to google chrome when I had the computer problems.

  31. Updating now…

    * Tomorrow will be a very chilly day, stiff EAST wind. But dry air at mid levels, though allowing a middle overcast above a lower stratus deck, will probably keep rain to patchy and very light mainly NW of Boston until sunset or later. So in other words it’s not going to turn soaking wet as quickly as some forecast are indicating.

    * Heaviest rain overnight Wednesday night / Thursday morning.

    * Thursday PM some improvement and 60s to 70 away from the South Coast and Cape which will be much cooler.

    * Friday, mild but we may end up with more cloudiness as lots of stratocumulus spill down from the mountains.

    * Weekend looks mild, but not 100% sunny. There will probably be more sun than clouds Saturday and more clouds than sun Sunday with a shower threat each day.

    * Pool of very cold air aloft coming down Sunday night and Monday – some of the northern mountains may get a late season dumping of snow. In fact, mix/snow showers may make it all the way into the hills of MA and southern NH Sunday night and part of Monday.

    * Still not seeing a shift to more persistent above normal temperatures just yet. But climatology is allowing the warm ups to be more significant as we move forward in time.

      1. Sun cloud mix – pop up showers cannot be ruled out but most of day looks dry, and in the 60s. Modest breeze.

    1. Only patchy in the afternoon. Much of the day may stay rain-free but not drizzle-free. I think for your area the real rain comes in after sunset.
