Slow Trough

11:30PM

As talked about in the previous blog, a trough of low pressure will slowly traverse the Northeast this week, with somewhat unsettled weather as we transition from warmer and slightly more humid air Tuesday into Wednesday to cooler and a drying trend later in the week. The only change is going to be to add a chance of a few lingering showers to Friday’s forecast. The weekend still looks great! An offshore frontal system will help steer Tropical Storm Bertha to the north then northeast between the East Coast and Bermuda, with the only impact being some increased ocean swells and rip currents later in the week at the beaches.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

OVERNIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 58-65. Wind light variable.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated to scattered afternoon and evening showers/t-storms. Any showers and storms could produce downpours. Highs 73-80 South Coast, South Shore, and Cape Cod, 80-87 elsewhere. Wind variable to S 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Slight chance of showers. Lows 60-68. Wind light variable.

WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Episodes of showers and a chance of thunderstorms. Highs in the 70s to lower 80s. Wind variable, mainly SW shifting to NW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated to scattered mainly afternoon showers & t-storms. Low 60. High 78.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated afternoon showers. Low 58. High 77.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 55. High 79.

  1. Thanks, TK. And I’m glad your father had a great birthday! And thank you for your birthday wishes!

  2. Thanks to everyone who sent me birthday wishes yesterday! I enjoyed the day.

Today looks to be another summerlike day. We haven’t had much HHH so far this summer, but the summer isn’t over yet. I would like to see one or 2 (no more than that) days w/temps. hitting 90. Also, I still am seeing signs in some communities still w/water restrictions – are we still in a draught??

    1. My town apparently has water restrictions every year between June 1st and Oct 1st regardless of rainfall amounts. The infrastructure of the water system just can’t handle large draws. They increased our water bill rates by 30% last year to put that into making improvements so restrictions won’t be needed in the future, but i have yet to see any work being done at all. It will probably end up in the pockets of town officials.

      1. Wow – Interesting. I wonder if that’s what the other towns have. It isn’t fair, but what can you do. Thanks for the reply.

        1. I saw that Sudbury had one last week. I’d be surprised if it were lifted yet but maybe it is?

  3. Roofers were here yesterday for 12 hours. They completely finished the main
roof. Here now working on the back flat roof and 2 porch roofs. The NOISE, oh the NOISE!! We can’t stand it!! We should have moved to a motel. 😀

Ace, they did end up removing 1 gutter on the back flat roof that desperately needed
replacement, but NO RAIN yesterday. A few storms snuck in close, but slipped by to the
South. The one at night, fell apart before making it here. IF any come this PM, I think
the roofers will be far enough along such that I don’t think it would cause a problem. 😀

  4. The Wind is Calm at Logan. How often do you see that?
Of course, that means the sea breeze is imminent. 😀

  5. SPC not including us in any slight risk or even the general thunderstorm outlook today and tomorrow. The thunderstorms that fire up the next two days look to be non severe.
For Laughs 6z GFS for tomorrow.

    1. Even that is down quite a bit from the other day.

I don’t see any concerns whatsoever. We shall see if there is another
      surprise by Mother Nature.

NAM and CMC shows even less instability.

      😀

  6. Good morning!! Working in the hingham area today, looking like a hot day, heading to Richmond tommorrow for the day to see the Patriots Redskins joint practice. I’m so happy football season is here. Good day everyone 🙂

      1. We start the season with a rival with the 49ers at home at 4:25 on the 7th. Our offense has to be on every game in my
opinion in order to win. Our defense is terrible and I would not be surprised if we gave up close to enough more than
30 points every game this season. Sean Lee out for the season with injury and Demarcus Ware who is on the Broncos
are going to be big losses for us on defense.

  7. The start of football season is always bittersweet. It symbolizes the end of summer, at least here in NE

  8. Convection firing well to the West once again today.
Will it make it to Eastern Sections? Hope not.
Porch roofs are done, still working on back large flat roof, including a new gutter.
Hope they finish before it rains, or it doesn’t rain. 😀

    1. Taunton NEXRAD down AGAIN for maintenance. It was down yesterday as well.
Something is up there for sure.

  9. Boston to pursue Stanton:

“I think Boston is looking ultimately for Giancarlo Stanton. And hopefully in their mind will package some of their young players to get him,” Heyman told Andy Gresh and Mike Flynn

        1. Maybe the Sox can make them a deal they can’t refuse. 😀
Sure and I’m the Easter Bunny.

  10. Parts of that mesoscale discussion area are in the general thunderstorm outlook by the SPC.
For tomorrow parts of the Mid Atlantic in the general thunderstorm outlook. There is nothing for our area.

  11. I’ll bet the water at the beach has been “warm” today.

Boston Harbor Buoy water temp reading is 69.3F

    1. To bad that is just a temperature due to the sea breeze. REAL temperature
      is about 64. 😀

  12. Right now as of 4:19 PM, there is ZERO convection going on within MA.
I think it is pretty safe to say that there will be NONE in Boston today.
Tomorrow is another day and we shall see. 😀

      1. There will be more activity in eastern MA tomorrow than today, which pretty much is a no-brainer. 😉

Most areas will not see the extreme of what their threats are depicted as, however. But they need to warn for it since it’s Summer and many people are outside. 🙂

        1. Landscapers are coming to do yardwork early afternoon tomorrow. Hopefully any storms arriving in Boston will be very late.

    1. One of the best Summers weather-wise, as I had said recently, unless you are a huge HHH lover (which I am, but I like this too).

      1. I love summer as it’s my favorite season as it’s always been. I as well like the HHH conditions but it really has been a good mix of weather to please most . As I have said I would like to see at least one heat wave before August is out. I think labor day weekend would be perfect since Mother Nature spoiled the. 4th. For done reason though Labor Day weekends around here have been iffy as it seems were usually tracking a storm.

        1. Been watching for you John. My youngest and family are having Humarock withdrawal since we can’t go this summer. They are planning a weekend at the fairview in Brandt rock. I know you like the restaurant.

          1. Yes indeed great place to go for dinner . It’s a tad expensive but worth it. We have started a tradition that every year we will go there for aniversary this will be the third year on September 7th that we’ve gone . Usually just us but this year I believe he is going . It’s usually $100 for us when we go and that gets us appatizer, salad, dinner , desert and usually she gets a drink or two .

            1. And tip. I guess that’s not bad. It’s the only time we go and skid they valet for no charge.

                1. Very cool John. There is a continental breakfast. Not sure they will eat there as it is pricey for them.

      2. I do not mind HHH but I do not find it comfortable for being outdoors for extended periods and you know how I love being out and also having the outside come in through open windows. To me this is a perfect summer although we do need more rain

  13. If I am not mistaken, the highest temp at Logan so far this summer was 94F. I can’t recall any summer not reaching upper 90’s at some point. IIRC even the “chilly” summer of 2009 there were a few days in the mid-upper 90’s.

I am certainly not complaing in the least…keep the heat waves away. 🙂

      1. Second half of August and September were fine, but there were a few days in early August that were quite hot and uncomfortable. I am certain of that because I had to work a special outdoor event (Field Hockey Championship) during the first few days of August. There were no cool days during that 2-week tournament, at least not the days that I worked it. 😉

        1. Being a heat lover I would include the 1st half of August in my “very nice” category. I suppose it’s all a matter of opinion. 🙂

          1. We begin Fall aeration overseedings Aug 27th and end Oct 19th, then winterizer in Nov, you know we r always ahead 🙂

        2. I worked 4 days of that tournament (not consecutive) and probably the days that I didn’t work were nice and cool I bet. 😉

2009 seems so long ago with all the new technology nowadays. I can’t keep up with it. I heard that Apple has a new I-Phone coming out in September.

  14. Southern New England Weather Conference will be on October 25 this year and has a great lineup of talks, including a panel of TV mets answering submitted questions. Eric Fisher & Harvey Leonard will be part of the panel.

    1. Have a good time TK!…and let us know what the collective thoughts are on the upcoming winter. 🙂

  15. OS, looks like the Taunton radar site has been down intermittently due to construction the last few weeks near the site. There is a status message link near the top right corner. It says they can bring it up if conditions warrant during the outage time.

  16. Good morning,

No rain made it into Boston last night that I could tell. Perhaps a sprinkle or 2.

Today could be different. As per usual, the GFS leads the way with the highest
instability parameters and those are for 0Z. The CMC and NAM are considerably lower
and highest values in the 18Z-21Z time frame. Go figure.

So again, as usual, no one knows what/when/if anything will happen. 😀

We’ll watch the radars and see.

Waiting for roofers to return to finish up. All roofs are done, except one gutter
needs to be installed and its downspouts connected. Hopefully that is completed before any rain arrives. 😀
