    1. Temp dropped to 52 here with a 43 DP. Been creeping down for a few hours now. I put AC n early to dry house out as it wss wet and sticky. Now I am thinking the fire would be fun in a bit !! Cannot beat New England

  1. Very wet out today. I was trying to get the pool shut down and buttoned up, but the weather hasn’t cooperated much. Wasnt expecting the rain to be this widespread or heavy. All the forecast were for isolated and scattered showers. A little more widespread today. Not a deluge, but enough to get me and the air compressor too wet to work.
I just need an hour of dry weather to blow the lines and get the cover on.

    1. .2 here today. Seems sun is trying to come out. Maybe it will last long enough for you to get everything done. Will keep my fingers crossed

      1. Not a link haha, just the start of a recent observation from Pittsfield. -SN is light snow, which has been mixing in over much of the higher terrain in western and northern New England and upstate New York. Several inches on the way for some of the mountains.

          1. Maybe just a few flakes right at the tail end, pre-dawn tomorrow, but nothing too interesting. It’ll be on to the wind. Leaf drop advisory for tomorrow!

  2. We really missed out in the deluge here in central CT. Only 0.8″ rain total at my house between yesterday and today. Really starting to get nippy now, down to 41 here in Coventry with the wind picking up. Far cry from the tropical 71 we had at this time yesterday! I would not be surprised to see a wet flake mix in here at some point this evening.

  3. It felt like a Seattle day here. Just think we had back to back 80 plus days Tuesday and Wednesday.
Looking at Accuweather radar snow being indicated in parts of the Berkshires as well as far northern Litchfield County in CT.

  4. Gardening question for the lawn enthusiasts.

I aerated, fertilized and overseeded with tall fescue grass 7 days ago. It appears as if some of the seedlings have begun to sprout today. With temps in the 50s and night time temps in the 30s, will soil temps remain warm enough to allow seedlings continue to develop and will other seeds continue to germinate? I’m afraid a lot of effort and money will be wasted. I have irrigation so the seed bed will remain moist…NOT THAT THEY NEED ANY MORE WATER!!! LOL.

      1. Some of our seeds never sprouted. We think the first frost weeks ago many have done them in. So I’m interested in the answer also. So much money. Argh. And we also have irrigation so there was no time the soil was not moist

        1. Some of the seeds will still germinate in the spring. Problem is that if they haven’t germinated by the time the crab crass pre-emergent goes down, they’re toast.
Fescue should germinate in 7 days. As long as we don’t get a hard freeze in the next week or so, the fescue will cone up. Blue grass, not so much. Waaayy late for KBG.
I always tell people to overseer in late August and no later than the first week of September. The advice to oversees later in September or even into early October is just not correct for New England. Mid Atlantic or even as far north as NYC, ok. But not at our latitude. You really want a good amount of growth and at least 2 mowings of new grass before the first freeze.

          1. I had mine cored and overseeded September 6th. About half of it was slice seeded with a machine using a mix of fescue, KBG, and a touch of rye. It’s all up, filled in and pretty thick. I watered it 2 times a day for 3 weeks. Should have a thicker lawn come spring.

      1. Depends on the grass. 7-14 is usually correct for rye and fescue. Some KBG can take up to 21+ days. That’s why KBG needs to go down in early September at least.

  5. 44 here and still dropping. I see a slug of rain headed this way.
Any chance there are wet snow flakes mixed in? getting awfully close to the
temperature where it could happen. 850 MB temps forecast to be below freezing
starting about now to 9 PM or so and below after that. Hmmm I say Hmmm I say.

  6. WBZ has been down since 5 pm yesterday and it’s still not back up. No over the air signal, no Dish Tv, Direct Tv, no cable. etc etc. I think the only one that has it is Comcast since they get the feed direct from the station and not the transmitter.

    1. Isn’t the Pats game on Channel 4 today?
That would be horrible. We have Comcast, so I guess we’re ok.

Wonder what took it down? I’ve never heard of that before.

        1. Depends on the cable company. RCN doesn’t have it, neither does charter, which is most of Worcester county. If you have Fios, they have it.

        1. Perhaps only parts of Sutton. not sure. Several people, including my son in law in Uxbridge, said Sutton didn’t have fios so I was pleased

  7. Thank you Blackstone, Vicki and John for responding. It appears my fescue has begun to sprout yesterday. With temps not touching freezing over the next couple of weeks, I’m hoping they will continue to mature.

  8. Some quizzes today.

Boston has now received 4″ of rain this month. What is the greatest amount of rain ever recorded in Boston in the month of October?

    A. 10.66″
    B. 13.38″
    C. 14.87″
    D. 17.09″

    Answer later today.

    1. Because you have Comcast. They get their signal direct from the station over a line. Any cable outlet or the dish companies that rely on retransmission of the over the air signal have got no signal. A lot of Worcester county and parts of Hampshire and hampden counties have charter cable and they have no bz.

  9. Speaking of snow hard to believe this coming Saturday it will be the 5 year anniversary of that freak October snowstorm. Foot of snow where I live and lot of tree damage. Normally on a weekend in October your raking leaves and not shoveling snow.

  10. 2nd Quiz.

What factor is the least important in the formation of frost?

    A. Temperature
    B. Dewpoint
    C. Wind
    D. Cloud cover

    Answer later today.

    1. Well, I’m confused. I thought dew point made a difference but my guess is that the others have more influence so I’ll say B
