Friday Forecast

7:07AM

DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 21-25)
Transition day today. We transition out of this latest unsettled stretch gradually. We also transition from spring to summer rather suddenly as the solstice occurs at 11:54AM EDT. No that doesn’t mean it suddenly turns hot and sunny and stays that way. This is weather. We will, however, be heading for a very nice weekend, but first we have to go through the process of elongated low pressure coming across the region this morning with a cloudy sky and areas of showers, and leftover cold air above us this afternoon holding some cloudiness in place with the risk of an additional shower. By tonight, the dry air takes over and lasts through the weekend, with one possible exception, and that is there will be one more disturbance passing by with still some chilly air above on Saturday, and a shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out in the afternoon, favoring eastern areas. That chance is quite low, however, so don’t cancel plans. Just keep an eye out. Also, a gusty breeze will develop later today and continue into Saturday in response to low pressure departing to the east while high pressure approaches from the west. High pressure will bring the best weather of this 5 day period Sunday and Monday. By Tuesday, we’ll be feeling an increase in humidity and a disturbance moving in from the west will bring the risk of showers and thunderstorms once again.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Cloudy with lingering showers/drizzle/fog morning, then becoming partly sunny but with a risk of a passing shower this afternoon. Highs 71-78. Wind variable to NW increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts by late-day.
TONIGHT: Clearing. Lows 52-59. Wind NW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Slight risk of a passing afternoon shower or thunderstorm favoring southeastern NH and eastern MA. Highs 72-79. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, diminishing late.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 53-60. Wind light variable.
SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 76-83, coolest coast. Wind light variable with sea breezes.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 54-61. Wind light variable.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 78-85, cooler some coastal areas. Wind light W but with sea breezes possible.
MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 60-67. Wind light S.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Risk of a shower or thunderstorm. More humid. Highs 73-80. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 26-30)
A somewhat more typical early summertime pattern, weaker jet stream but still west to east flow, on the warmer side of normal overall, with disturbances passing by about early June 27 and early June 30, both bringing the risk of a shower or thunderstorm in the late June 26 to early June 27 period and again late June 29 to early June 30. Much of this period will be rain-free.

DAYS 11-15 (JULY 1-5)
Trends are for previously-mentioned ridging to be a little further west and south leaving this area in a weak mean trough position with near normal temperatures and a couple opportunities for passing showers/storms, but not a bad pattern overall, just lacking a lot of heat and humidity.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.

And here is an oddity. Although it is damp this morning, it is decidedly DRIER!
Go figure. When I went to bed last night the dp was 69 at my house and this
morning despite a few lonely rain drops, the dp was 59. 🙂 🙂 AND it feeld DRIER
    as well.

The Mrs. has really been feeling the humidity this week even though the temps
were not hight. Humidity GO AWAY!)(@)#&!*(@#&(*!@&#*(&!*(@&

      1. Thanks Tom. It has really been catching up with her and making
her sick. We’re supposed to go out to dinner this evening, so
I hope the humidity stays down and does not spike upward again.

        1. She has Asthma and the humidity wreaks havoc with it.
It is difficult to explain, but it really does a number on her.

        2. I think the humidity is supposed to really drop off towards later afternoon and evening, with dewpoints falling into the 40s to low 50s.

  2. Thank you, TK.

Humidity was high this week, but the temperature was not.

On TV the other day I saw a met reference a rain deficit this month. I’m not sure where that’s being measured. Perhaps inland somewhere? My rain gauge is broken, but I can pretty much assure you that in Back Bay we do not have a rain deficit this month. The water table is quite high, as evidenced by the persistent flooding in the parks, on the roadways, and underpasses.

    1. My rain gauge is showing 3.31 inches for the month so far as of this morning.
Seems pretty much on track for average or very close to it. Not enough of
a deviation to mention the word deficit in my opinion.

    2. Maybe in this way??? Although it seems either feast or famine.

A friend in York said they have never had as much rain as they have this spring. I don’t know where to find York, ME info though.

  3. Dew Point still 59 at the Airport with temp 66 wind NNW to N at 10 mph.
PLEEEEZE let it stay like that.

  4. I’m sorry to hear about your wife, JP Dave. High levels of humidity can wreak havoc with autoimmune disorders, including asthma and allergies.

    1. Thanks Joshua and she suffers from both…

I never realized how fortunate I was/am not to be bothered by these type
of afflictions. It must really suck not to feel well most of the time.

  5. TK, the Nunavut joke was sensational.

Oceanair, I also miss the Kimmirut webcam. Maybe they felt their privacy was being invaded. I read somewhere that there had already been over 1 million views by 2013, so probably millions by the time the webcam was down.

  6. Thanks Joshua for the info regarding allergies. I had no idea that humidity is such a factor besides trees and grasses. Maybe the tv mets should consider humidity in their daily allergy reports as well.

JPD – Would your wife be able to handle a high temp (95) but with a very low dewpoint (45) a little better? Just wondering. Hope she gets better over the weekend.

  7. Thanks TK.
At least were going to get a break this weekend from those high dew points. Yesterday to me was the first day of 2019 where it felt oppressive. I look at the overnight lows to see if it is going to feel comfortable for the day ahead. Overnight lows in the 50s nice dry airmass in place. When those lows are mid 60s or higher it is going to be a STICKORAMA.

  8. DP hanging at 59 for Boston. I hit the like button!
MUCH better than the 68 or 69 from yesterday.

      1. C’mon… you are kidding? Are you not?
Why on earth would it be depressing?

If anything, it is one of the best astronomical moment of the year
of course along with the Winter Solstice. 🙂 🙂

        1. A little bit 🙂

I know it’s not noticeable for a month. It’s psychological.

I love the winter solstice ! Rebirth, returning of the light.

      2. Well, starting tomorrow morning, sunrise will be one minute later. From now on sunrises will be minutes instead of just seconds later. I think that by the end of July, I’ll be leaving for work in the dark again.

            1. I told my daughter today that I am already deciding on a date to set my tree up. I’m happy with Christmas all year. Back to school makes sense since different areas begin earlier than we do.

          1. Today they have one of the biggest celebrations in the Scandinavian countries. We used to celebrate midsummer and I’m not sure why we stopped.

  9. By now the female Emperor penguins have laid their eggs and have been transferred to the males who are sitting on them while the females travel (march) many miles over solid ice to feed over the open waters. Their male counterparts will have to endure weeks of blizzard conditions while waiting for their young chicks to hatch in the meantime all huddled together in groups. Later in July, the females will return to, hopefully, find their mates and new young chicks all hatched. 🙂

  10. Philip, the penguin story is fascinating. A couple of years ago my daughter and I watched an episode of Planet Earth (Attenborough was the narrator) which featured penguins.

    1. There was also a wonderful 2-part documentary last year iirc on PBS Nature. Antarctica is actually really fascinating this time of year, albeit dangerous.

  11. Pop up showers, mostly of small areal coverage, developing inland from southern NH to northern RI

  12. I think a lot of people expected today to be much nicer than it has been – have heard several “where’s all the sun they’ve been talking about all week….?”

  13. Often in the summer I’ve noticed that many written weather forecasts will lead with something like : The WEEKEND won’t be a WASHOUT !!!” All people see is “weekend and washout” and assume that’s what is being talked about. Their click rates must go exponentially higher with a headline like
    That ?
This week it’s been WEEKEND followed by “spectacular, perfect, sun” etc not not noticing that those adjectives were not being used to describe Friday ( which is “the weekend” for many in the summer ….).

    1. I tend to write my headlines and teasers to give the reader a clear picture of what to expect, but then again I’m not after “ratings”. 🙂

  14. Showers turned into fairly steady rain for a bit. Now it’s just sprinkling. It has added to my courtyard woes, as it flooded early this morning, along with the trash area, and is showing signs of flooding again now.

On the bright side, the grass has never looked greener, whether it’s the Commonwealth Avenue mall, the Esplanade Park, the Public Garden. It’s verdant and very happy with the rain.

  15. M.L., good comment. Friday is not the weekend, unless it’s a special Friday, like the one after Thanksgiving. Today was not supposed to be a nice day, but it certainly hasn’t been brutal. Just a few more lingering showers than I had expected. But, we were warned by TK and others that the drying out wouldn’t really happen until tonight.

    1. I was a bit too optimistic for “partly sunny” this afternoon. Granted, the showers were passing, but they were probably slower than people would have liked to see.

      1. When we hold you or anyone to a couple of hours, we need to truly rethink our standards

Sun is coming out in Sutton

  16. This was a great cold season set-up. Would have been 1-3 inches of snow on the backside and maybe more in southeast MA.

Steady rain last hour or so and pouring now !!
