Sunday Forecast

10:33AM

DAYS 1-5 (JULY 28-AUGUST 1)
About as typical a summertime pattern as you can have around here in mid summer. Kind of fits doesn’t it? A weakening frontal boundary may trigger a shower or thunderstorm in a few locations tonight and again during the daytime heating Monday. A stronger frontal boundary may do the same during Wednesday and Wednesday night, lingering into early Thursday. Those are your primary “wet weather threats” this 5-day period, which will often by rain-free, and feature low-grade summer heat and humidity, easing a bit as the stronger front gets through the region during Thursday.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 85-92. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Remote risk of an isolated shower mainly central MA and southern NH evening. Lows 65-72. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Partly sunny. Humid. Isolated to scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Highs 86-93. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Risk of a shower or thunderstorm early. Humid. Lows 66-73. Wind light SW.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Humid. Highs 86-93. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Humid. Lows 67-74. Wind light SW.
WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Numerous afternoon thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 85-92. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and a risk of thunderstorms. Humid. Lows 66-73. Wind light variable.
THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of showers in the morning. Less humid. Highs 80-87. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 2-6)
More typical summer weather in the early days of August with high pressure bringing fair weather August 2, another weakening frontal boundary nearing the region on the August 3-4 weekend with minimal shower/thunderstorm risk, then a stronger front driving out of Canada with a slightly more vigorous low pressure trough which may enhance the shower/thunderstorm risk around August 5-6.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 7-11)
Low pressure trough will cross the Great Lakes / Northeast with slightly cooler weather but as warm/humid air tries to make a come-back, some cloudiness and showers may occur early in the period, with then a transition to a more typical late summer warm/humid, minimal shower/storm risk set-up later in the period as a weak west to east flow takes over.

  1. I have walked a lot recently. My heart has been behaving immensely well and I have only had 2 a-fib episodes in the last 4 months, both ended quickly with medication.

My fairly regular a-flutter episodes have been minimal, even with the test-consumption of known triggers to see where I am standing. For some reason, my condition has improved drastically. Anyway, I have been walking a lot this summer. I have been going on regular neighborhood walks, many Saturday morning walks around the school grounds (the high school and elementary school I went to, which have both been rebuilt but the walk itself is a tradition going back to 1983). This morning I did the Saturday morning walk a day late and then I did my usual Sunday morning around the local pond, so I doubled it up today (7AM & 8AM) and still did the usual stuff with my mom. This is why the blog update was late. πŸ˜‰

Going back to yesterday, the reason I didn’t do my school walk was because after I dropped my son off at work at 7:30AM I drove up to Hampton Beach and walked the water’s edge then spent a short while at brunch and several minutes in the arcade being a kid before I drove to a local library where they had an exhibit of photos taken in the summer of 1983. Yes this is meant to tie in with the year I started the school walks. They photos were wonderful. What a great set of snapshots of a time preserved. I honestly am not sure if I was supposed to do this or not but I was the only person in the exhibit room so I took a photo of each photo, making sure that the photographer’s name was included in each. These will be great to look back on. I was probably up there when a couple of those photos were taken (no, didn’t spot myself as a 16 year old kid in any). πŸ˜‰

Anyway my original point was going to be going on all these walks has made me realize that you can “smell” what time of year it is, be you at the beach or inland. I can basically tell you what month it is by not looking, but taking in the scents of the areas I walk. For example, we are now transitioning between the developing stage of vegetation to the mature and in some cases later stages of these things. You can smell the weeds common to late summer / early autumn starting to make their appearance. This is something that I did notice as a kid too but back then the smells of the late summer weeds, before triggering nasty allergies, would trigger the thought “NO, SUMMER CAN’T END! SCHOOL CAN’T BE ALMOST HERE!” πŸ˜‰

    1. So glad you’re feeling so much better, TK, and thank you for sharing your weekend adventures and your recollections of your youth!!!! Every once in awhile, I like to walk through places in Mansfield that I walked as a kid. It is funny and wonderful you mention smells! Mansfield High used to play its football games at Memorial Park where there are many pine trees. Pine trees make me think of high school football and cheering on the Hornets!

I think I have mentioned here that our Mansfield home was a block from a chocolate factory. During Nor’easters, the winds would blow from the direction of the chocolate factory. I can still smell chocolate when I am shovelling my driveway even though I live in Taunton!!!

I still think, “NO, SUMMER CAN’T END! SCHOOL CAN’T BE ALMOST HERE!”

      Great stuff, TK!!!

  2. Speaking of Mansfield, I thought Aidan and North would be interested in the following:
Mansfield has had two tornado in its (somewhat) recent history. I found these articles from the Mansfield NEWS:

On August 2, 1970, an F1 tornado tore through downtown Mansfield from the north end to the airport. And, West Mansfield was the terminal point of the infamous June 9, 1953 Worcester tornado.

Aidan and North, you probably know the streets and areas that were affected by these storms.

    1. You do know that the Worcester tornado was never any where near
Mansfield as it dissipated in the Fayville section of Framingham.

There was another tornado that day, which is clear on your map. It is that
one that may have ended in Mansfield.

Just to be clear mind you.

  3. Finally, did you see this last weekend?

Mike Yastrzemski (Carl’s grandson) is a rookie for the San Francisco Giants. Just like Grandpa, Lil Yaz hit a walkoff last Sunday! He even looks like Carl! The Giants are 7-3, playing good ball and are only 2.5 games out of the wild card.

The Giants are scheduled to play at Fenway September 17-19. Mike will be playing on the same field as his grandfather. Isn’t that something???

Sox go for the sweep tonight!!! Go Sox!

    Enjoy this beautiful Sunday!!!

      1. Not thrilled with it, but it’s not as bad as last weekend. It’s manageable. Maybe my body is just getting used to it.

        1. True, but it’s effects are cumulative. This weather blows!!
I think I would be more suited to the weather in say,
Calgary AB Canada. πŸ™‚ Yes I know it can get very cold, but
          I deal with that better.

Oh well, it will be Autumn before we know it.

  4. TK, thank you. I’m glad to hear that you’re managing your health well at this point.

I concur that one can smell the time of year. The vegetation is indeed in a mature state. Squash is growing at a rapid clip. That includes pumpkins, which will be ready for harvest in a month’s time. It’s nearing chrysanthemum season. I fixate on light. Late July light is different from late June and very different from late August.

  5. C.F., thanks for sharing the links to New England’s tornado history. Also, it’s fantastic that baseball has another Yaz. And, his team, the Giants, have staged an impressive comeback this season. Giants may be indirectly helping the Red Sox, as Bumgarner is no longer available to the Yankees (or anyone else).

    1. I wonder how Yaz is doing healthwise these days. I looked it up as he will be 80 next month.

  6. JPD:
Apparently, there were other tornadoes that were separate from the F4 that hit Worcester.

    Found this from https://www.weatherconcierge.com/new-englands-strongest-and-deadliest-tornado-devastated-worcester-in-1953/:

The tornado was winding down around 5:45 p.m. when a tornado warning was finally issued. Another tornado formed about the same time the warning was issued and struck Sutton, Northbridge, Bellingham, Franklin, Wrentham, and Mansfield, resulting 17 injuries. That tornado was rated as an F-3 with winds of 158-206 mph. Other small tornadoes touched down north of Boston and into New Hampshire.

I must have misread or read the Mansfield NEWS article too fast. Sorry about that.

    1. Yup, that is what I was getting at. I knew there was another that cut
through Bellingham and I suspected that one may have ended in Mansfield.

That was one wild day in June and I actually remember that day.

I was living in Norwood at the time and I remember some
asphalt shingles coming down from the sky.

    2. Ah yes, I remember seeing that photo many years ago.

A friend of mine was doing a project for college and I was working
at Air Force Cambridge Research labs at the Natick Army Labs Annex in
the corner of Maynard and Stowe (As a Northeastern coop job) where the team I worked for did research on Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. They helped me with materials for my friend as they had a library of such goodies. That photo and perhaps that document was among the materials.

  7. Thanks TK and glad to hear you are feeling well.

We are walking around Boston today and it is hot out there. Heading to Fenway later for the game. Unfortunately I made the mistake of:

    1. Wearing my Yankees shirt
    2. Going to Dicks Last Resort for lunch in Faneuil Hall
    3. Sitting outside where everyone was walking by

The waitress put one of those silly paper hats on me and wrote β€œKick me, I’m a Yankees Fan!”. I lost count of the number of people walking by stopping to look and laugh at me…three of them even stopped to take pictures of me. I was getting more attention than the friggin street performers πŸ™‚

Hopefully I will have the last laugh later….Yankees need a win tonight. Their performance in the first three games has been a complete embarrassment!

    1. So sorry about that. Trust me we’re not all like that.
It hate fans around here who shout out “Yankees Suck”. Disgraceful!!!!
I don’t hate the Yankees or Yankee fans.

I used to love and enjoy Mickey Mantle play. Saw him hit a monster home
run at Fenway batting right handed.

Still, I hope the Sox Win. Sorry. Enjoy the game and I hope
      you don’t get harassed.

      1. Oh, it was all in good fun! No one was mean about it. I was getting a kick out of it πŸ™‚

  8. Mark enjoy the game. I wonder what move Brian Cashman will make after the past week with all the runs Yankees starters have given up. I am hoping this is a blip on the radar. Come the postseason pitching like this past week won’t win a World Series. I think the Yankees acquire Marcus Stroman at the trade deadline.

    1. Stroman would help. But, I think they need one more: Maybe Bauer or Syndergaard. Seriously, the Yankees’ rotation is Orioles bad right now, and actually has been for quite some time. The offense has carried the team, along with a great bullpen.

    2. They definitely need to make a move at the trade deadline. The last two series have really exposed the Yankees weakness with their starting pitching. You need good starting pitching come playoff time. Can’t keep winning games with your bullpen.

  9. I’m with you, JP Dave, I want the Sox to win and don’t like it when the Yankees do. But, I respect the Yankees. It’s an excellent and proud organization. Was too young to see Mantle, but have his baseball card from 1964, along with many others. There were many great Yankees in the 70s and 90s, who I feared and revered at the same time. There are quite a few today, too. I believe Yankee fans like Mark and JJ are similar when it comes to how they view the Red Sox. I’m all for passionate fans.

Mark, I’m glad it was all in good fun. The “Yankees suck” chant is awful, just like the “Boston sucks” chant. In both instances, the words are hollow and meaningless, given the franchises’ storied histories. In the late 90s and early 2000s the Yankees suck chant was especially embarrassing to me as Red Sox fan. Back then, my son asked me when he was 12 – “Dad, do the Yankees suck?” I said, no, Daniel, they don’t, they’re very good, but we do want them to lose for once. This was in 2003.

    1. I’ve seen many Yankees fans around the City today and I’m sure there will be many at the game tonight. It’s the same deal in NY, plenty of Red Sox fans make the trip down and I’ll have to say that 95% of the times the fans are civil to one another and the joking is in good fun. There are always a few bad eggs. It’s best to just ignore them and not engage.

  10. The Yankees were fortunate to win two out of three against the Twins thanks to they were able to out slug them. Since the All Star Break the Yankees starting rotation ERA is the worst in Major League Baseball.

  11. Thanks TK. Happy to hear you are feeling stronger. Wonderful news.

I love your comments about smelling the season …the day….the time of year. We talked about this recently and think alike. In addition to seasons, smells trigger special memories. Sometimes they are memories we had forgotten all about until that certain smell comes along.

  12. Thanks TK, glad to hear the A-fib episodes have been few and far between.

Mark and JJ, I’d talk trash to you about the Yankees, but there’s a 4 game series next weekend in Yankee Stadium, so I can’t yet πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  13. The difference for the Yankees so far in this series against the Red Sox they are not out slugging them like they did the Twins. Now I want to see just how desperate Brian Cashman is to make a move as CC Sabathia is on the 10 day IL with knee inflammation.

  14. To TK.

Glad to hear about your health! I am a big proponent of walking. I hope your health continues to improve. Great news!!

  15. “Yankees Suck” is a chant I despise.

And here’s the thing. Sports is sports. Sure professionals do it for money and it’s their career, but at the end of the day it’s still a game. You root for your favorite team. That’s what it’s supposed to be about.

I “dislike” the Yankees as a Sox fan, but I don’t hate any team nor their fans. I disapprove of the bad apple fans that any team has. There’s a way to root against someone and have fun with it. But I’d rather concentrate on rooting for my teams instead of against everyone else’s.

Sox / Yankees is a great rivalry. One of the greatest of all time. But in the end it comes down to respect, no matter what side you’re on.

  16. Yes In-Didi!! Gregorious makes the Yankees fans euphorious!

Sorry, had to break into my best John Sterling impression there πŸ™‚

So far so good for the Yankees. Sale looks shaky. But still plenty of game left…

    1. Sale is shaky, Mark. His better days are in the rear-view mirror. Beating the offensively anemic Blue Jays and Rays last week is truly meaningless, especially when it took Sale 116 pitches to get through 6 innings in one of his two `good’ outings. Sale cannot dominate or even pitch well against a superior offense. It’s sad to see a once great talent slide towards being average at best.

  17. I was way off with my prediction I made earlier about the Yankees getting Marcus Stroman from Toronto. Instead the Mets end up getting Stroman. I am quite surprised the Mets got him.

  18. Well it took until the 8th inning with the Red Sox down 9-4 for the first Yankees Sucks chant. Lol.
