Friday Forecast

7:42AM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 2-6)
High pressure brings a “top ten” day today. In reality there are probably more like 20 of these days in any given year but, top ten works. The weekend features a tad bit more humidity and a risk of a passing shower or thunderstorm favoring western and northern areas later Saturday and a pop up shower or storm South Coast Sunday as a weak trough moves through the region. Another Canadian high pressure area brings great weather for Monday before some humidity and cloudiness with shower risk arrives Tuesday as a trough moves into the Great Lakes.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 78-85, coolest along the shore. Wind light variable with sea breezes.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 60-67. Wind light variable.
SATURDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Slight risk of isolated thunderstorms favoring areas north and west of Boston late-day. More humid. Highs 83-90. Wind light SW.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Humid. Lows 65-72. Wind light SW.
SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers and thunderstorms mainly South Coast midday-afternoon. Moderately humid. Highs 85-92 except 78-85 Cape Cod and immediate coastal areas. Wind variable 5-15 MPH with sea breezes.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Less humid. Lows 61-68. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 78-85. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 60-67. Wind light W.
TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Risk of late-day showers. Highs 80-87. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 7-11)
A broad trough will move across the region August 7-8 with a risk of a few episodes of showers and thunderstorms. This trough will weaken but may slow down resulting in a few pop up showers later in the period but overall fair weather and a lack of significant heat.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 12-16)
Trough exits to east and a more west to east flow takes over with warmer, more humid air at times, and a risk of a few episodes of showers/thunderstorms amidst mainly rain-free weather.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.
I see that Boston’s average high is already on the way down now being 81. πŸ™‚
    Sign of things to come.

  2. We have dinner reservations tomorrow at Smith and Wollensky.
If it gets too humid/hot today/tomorrow, my wife will not make it.
I “think” today will be ok, at least the DP is starting out low. Tomorrow, I am worried.

Keep the FACATA HUMIDITY away from here!!!! GO AWAY NEVER TO RETURN!!!!!

On another note, my new Davis Instruments weather station arrived late last evening.
Hope to get that operational this afternoon.

    1. Saturday’s dew point in Boston should stay under 65 with a brief spike possible at night.

      1. Thanks TK. That “may” be just enough, depending upon temperature. Fortunately, we have the ACs which certainly help.

        1. But the effects are cumulative. We actually got out
of the house last evening as she was cooped up for
4 days! This weather really takes a toll on my wife. She
          really had difficulty breathing.

    2. I sure hope you can both enjoy dinner tomorrow night. Will there be birthday cake involved πŸ˜‰

  3. Thanks TK
In the something to keep an eye category middle next week. Ryan Hanrahan tweeted about this possibility to yesterday. From NWS Boston
Although details will need to be worked out in later forecasts, pattern recognition tells us to be aware of potential for severe weather both days somewhere in the Northeast, as local research has shown presence of closed lows in southern Canada or near Great Lakes to be a favorable setup. Something to keep an eye on over the next several days.

  4. Here is Ryan Hanrahan’s tweet from yesterday. I put this like the NWS Boston discussion in let’s keep an eye on it.
Deep Great Lakes trough next week should allow the humidity crank and also introduce the chance for severe weather.

  5. Ogunquit Beach was fabulous yesterday. About as perfect as you can get for weather. I got to the main lot shortly after 9AM and it was only about 1/4 full. It never really did fill up from what I could tell. Although there were plenty of people at the beach, I think a good percentage of them were staying at the beach on vacation. I sandwiched 2 slices of beach time around a trolley ride to Perkins Cove and a walk back to the beach via Marginal Way, on which I took my sweet time, and many, many photographs. I’ll put a small sample below but there are so many more.

Today, I’m off to Hampton, leaving a bit later and spending the afternoon and much of evening there as they are doing a fireworks show at 9:30PM which was postponed from Wednesday. πŸ™‚

Anyway, the only photo that I gave a title to is the first one: “Partners on the Path of Life”… Here they are.

    1. Awesome photos, TK. Guess which one had me smiling ear to ear.

Also, did you see any damage in the York area or didn’t you head in that far?

  6. Great pics thanks for sharing. Water temps up there almost tolerable for swimming. Water temps south coast 75-77.

    1. Hi Sue! As of now, it looks just about perfect. Monday in particular looks like a gem. Low humidity with highs in the mid 80s. A little warmer (mid-upper 80s) and a little more humid Tuesday but nothing oppressive. Very low risk of a late day shower/storm but more likely it stays dry all day. Enjoy!!

      1. Wonderful, thank you SO much WxW! Looks like we will do the amusement park on Monday and the water park on Tuesday. Your input is very much appreciated.

  7. I take this with a HUGE grain of salt but I am rooting for this. Before this potentially happens I believe this is what Ryan Hanrahan and the NWS Boston discussion were talking about with that chance of severe weather middle of next week.
    Tweet from Meteorologist Michael Ventrice
A strong upper-level disturbance is predicted to push over the Northeast (and another disturbance over the Northwest) next week. This feature will drive some unseasonably cool temperatures down across the area during the second week of August

  8. Thank you, TK!!!

Seems the weather isn’t all Canada is sending our way. I’m seeing a fair amount of Canadian Geese .

    1. If Canada could send us some cooler temps second week of August I will take it. Will see if things get interesting middle of next week with any thunderstorms that do form.

  9. Good morning…and wonderful one it is. I cherish these days!

Thanks, TK…Awesome photos! So glad you’re feeling better and enjoying your summer days!

Remembering the all-time Massachusetts maximum record this date in 1975, 107 degrees in Chester and in New Bedford. Here are my notes from that day:

Just two more 8 pm sunsets left until May 17.

Enjoy the day and weekend, y’all!

    1. Remember that day well. We traveled to the Cape (Eastham) that morning
broiling in the car with no AC!!
Was 98 in Eastham. Played golf the next morning and it was virtually
      just as hot!

    2. I love that you have notes. Thank you for sharing. I’ve already said we were moving a friend/professor at Dartmouth into housing. We had no idea how hot it was. I do recall sleeping on the living room floor in front of the open french doors to the porch that night. Although, I do not recall sleeping much.

  10. What a run to run (00z vs 12z) change ongoing on the GFS.

That deep trof for late next week into next weekend …… nowhere near as deep on the current 12z run, with nowhere near as much of a push of cool, dry air into the Great Lakes and northeast.

  11. Back and forth with these model runs just like in the winter when were tracking a snow threat. One run shows a blizzard next run not even there.

    1. By the rules of order of operations, 16.

But, I understand the sticky note interpretation in the article that gets 1.

Solution : I’d have this as extra credit. By the way we teach it, +2 if you get 16, +1 if you get to 1 (both answers need supporting work) and hope none of the students get any other answer other than 16 or 1. If that’s the case, then all is good ! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  12. Thank you, TK.

Quite warm in London, though not as hot and humid as Boston. Still, plant life, trees, and vegetation have really suffered. And it’s been an ongoing theme apparently for nearly 20 months with dry to very dry conditions persisting. Grass is brown in large patches in the parks. This is very unusual in London. Many of the trees look water-deprived, a bit like Boston 3 years ago. Light rain is in the forecast all of next week, but that’s a forecast and we’ll see if it verifies. I will return home on Sunday before the rain.

My impression of London is what it was 30 years ago when I lived in Oxford, England. This is a dignified place, organized in certain ways I wish we could emulate, but simply do not. Whether it’s the ubiquitous queue (no cutting in line anywhere, ever – so no screaming “who’s next?” because it’s always obvious who’s next), traffic behavior where red lights really mean stop and signals are not optional, or articulateness. Residents of the U.K. have mastered the art of conciseness. Brevity and ability to explain things orally are taught in school from a very young age. Education works wonders when done well.

  13. Davis Instruments weather station
installed on tripod in backyard on grass. should get much better readings now.

    install was BRUTAL!!!@

      1. I’m loving it so far. DP and TEMP readings appear
        to be spot on.

Needed to be a rocket scientist to install that sucker, but hey,
I am nearly so anyway. πŸ™‚

Looks really sharp. I’ll post a picture sometime this weekend.

right now, old accurite reading 83. Davis reading 80 as in
my Oregon Scientific. Care to guess which reading is correct?

Also, Davis DP 53 Accurite DP 58 ha ha ha ha

        I’ll be de-installing Accurite tomorrow. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
I think I will either BURN the Accurite or more likely throw
it out with the trash come Monday.

    1. That was my second answer πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

But the new math is backwards to me and math was my strength in school. Actually, by the time I was a sophomore, it was the only subject I actually did homework in

  14. Jp Dave I have a vantage pro 2 at my house. I love it!! The anemometer is on the roof and the iss is on a swing set in yard. I use weather link with the data logger.

  15. On the Davis vantage pro 2 yes it does. That’s what I liked about this one. It enables you to place the anemometer up high, and still have access to your rain collector for the occasional cleaning and unclogging. My anemometer is about 30’ or so above the ground. Unfortunately I live in a heavily wooded area that sometimes affects the accuracy.

    1. Thanks. As is the case with JPD I am not happy with my acurite but it could be a WiFi problem. I have some vacation coming up so will spend time trying to fix it

  16. From NWS Boston in the something to keep an eye on category
the greatest chance for strong to severe storms is Wednesday afternoon/evening. This is when we see an alignment of maximum moisture (PWATs approaching 2″, dewpoints in the 70s), instability, and bulk effective shear which could lead to some prolonged updrafts/organized storms. Still a good ways out but something to keep an eye on as we approach.

  17. We have a couple of birthdays……happy birthday to both Old Salty and Rainshine. Also to my youngest grand, Rilyn Mac. And Brady. Wow. August 3 is a popular day.

    1. More babies in August than any month! My son turns 20 later this month.

      Happy b-day to all!

  18. Updating now…

Rested a little extra this morning after walking about 20 miles the last 2 days. πŸ˜‰
