A fairly mild first week of March, much like much of the winter has gone, with 2 disturbances / frontal systems moving through, one tonight and one Tuesday night and early Wednesday in a very progressive pattern, then a third approaching later Friday when things may get more interesting. We’ll actually be watching 2 systems at the end of the week, one moving off the Mid Atlantic Coast and another diving through the Great Lakes, for the phase-timing game, which may end up giving the first chance of significant snow in quite a long time. But there is a high degree of uncertainly and we’ll have to keep a close eye on this through the week.

This weekend, Leap Day today and the first day of March tomorrow, will be cold thanks to a batch of cold air recently delivered “air-mail” from Canada. A weak upper disturbance may trigger a passing snow flurry today, otherwise expected dry weather for the weekend. And as has been the case all winter, moderation quickly follows for the first half of the coming week. Expect Monday to feature cloudiness as it warms up both surface and aloft, a small bubble of high pressure to bring fair weather Tuesday, then low pressure tracking northwest of the region to bring back cloudiness and a good chance of wet weather by the middle of the week.

By Monday, high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south means that clouds may be back.

This will take place as we have 2 wave of low pressure pass through the region, the first a weaker one moving south of the area today with very limited rainfall around, the second more potent with a more solid shot of rain mainly Wednesday night and early Thursday. The cold air arrives as the precipitation moves away Thursday and will be around with dry weather for the end of the week.

High pressure hangs on today with another mild and dry day. Weak cold front slides through from north to south tonight and high pressure in eastern Canada delivers a northeasterly breeze Tuesday as a wave of low pressure moves along the front as it settles just to the south. Tuesday’s weather will be much less pleasant due to those factors, but don’t expect all that much rain until a second surge of low pressure moves through the region later Wednesday, though there may be enough chilly air at the start for some mixed in frozen stuff in higher elevations well northwest of Boston. That low will pull away during Thursday and open the door for drier and colder by late this week.

One more chilly day then a weekend warm-up as high pressure drifts to the south of New England. The early part of next week will turn unsettled as clouds move in Monday then wet weather arriving Monday night into Tuesday as a broad low pressure area moves in, but into air mild enough so that once again frozen precipitation is not going to be a factor. That’s just been the predominant pattern that has been nearly impossible to break, and it’s not quite ready to let go yet.

The follow up storm I’ve been watching for midweek next week is still a threat, but current indications are that it will be a little more closely tucked in behind the first, with impact more on February 26 into February 27 before any real cold air can be established, so shifting the idea to more of a rain/mix situation for this, but with only moderate confidence, followed by drier/colder weather thereafter.

DAYS 11-15 (MARCH 2-6)
Somewhat active and colder pattern to start the month of March. The door will be open for the possibility of winter weather events. This doesn’t look like the type of pattern where we dive into the feel of full winter though, just more marginal. There is still not a strong sign of a set-up to really change the pattern in a big and lasting way from what has been predominant for much of this winter.

Two cold days in a row have been about our maximum time for a cold shot this winter, and once again that will be the case thanks to Canadian high pressure and a piece of modified arctic air mass today and Friday, until that high pressure area situates itself to the southwest and south of New England and the return flow around it brings milder air back into the region during the course of the weekend. By Monday, low pressure approaching from the southwest will spread clouds into the region.

Two storm systems impact the region during this period, the first as a mainly rain event for a portion of February 25 before drier weather returns and colder air arrives between it and the arrival of the next system, which may contain any type of precipitation but a stronger chance of frozen varieties as it impacts the region from later February 26 through February 27, with dry and seasonably cold weather following it to end the month.

DAYS 11-15 (MARCH 1-5)
Somewhat active and colder pattern to start the month of March. The door will be open for the possibility of winter weather events.

A blustery chill arrives today between departing low pressure and approaching high pressure. That high deliver a decent cold shot, rare for this winter, Thursday and Friday, and then it will sink to the south over the weekend at which time it will warm back up once again…
TODAY: Clouds in eastern MA and RI depart early, then sun dominates with a few passing clouds. Highs 40-47 morning, falling into the 30s afternoon. Wind W to NW 10-20 MPH, few higher gusts.

Two potential storm systems could impact the region during this 5 day period, the first with rain favored in the February 24-25 time frame and the second with mix/snow favored in the February 27-28 time frame. Temperatures trending colder.

Overall temperature trend is for somewhat colder, but not extreme. Have to watch a couple low pressure systems but this far out have no feel on how they may or may not impact the region. Further investigation needed…

DAYS 1-5 (FEBRUARY 18-22)
Low pressure tracks from the Great Lakes down the St. Lawrence Valley today, which will be the only unsettled day of this 5-day period. Precipitation with this system will be mainly rain, only starting as snow with minor accumulation in limited locations northwest of Boston. High pressure from Canada delivers a shot of cold air for midweek, which then eases late in the week as the high slips off to the south.
TODAY: Becoming cloudy. Precipitation arrives west to east by midday as rain except snow with minor accumulation Worcester Hills and southwestern NH before changing to rain. Highs 37-42 except 42-47 South Coast. Wind SE 5-15 MPH, higher gusts especially coastal areas.
TONIGHT: Cloudy evening with rain ending west to east. Clearing overnight. Lows 32-39. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

Fair, milder February 23 with high pressure to the south of the region. Low pressure makes a run at the region later February 24 into February 25 but with mild air around rain is favored. Turning colder thereafter with another low bringing a threat of precipitation with mix/snow favored by the end of the period, depending on the track of the system.

DAYS 11-15 (FEBRUARY 28-MARCH 3)
Colder, mainly dry weather expected much of this period, though a storm system should be passing to the south of the region at some point.
