Happy Earth Day to all! No big changes today as we have a primary and secondary cold front to come through tonight and early Saturday with some showers and possibly a few thunderstorms later today and some lingering cloudiness and perhaps a shower early Saturday, then high pressure taking over later Saturday through Sunday. Optimistic for being on the warmer side of a boundary for much of Monday, then having it sink to the south delivering wet and cooler weather by Tuesday.

High pressure sinks to the south today and and cold front waits until late Friday night or early Saturday morning to pass, and this allows for 2 much warmer days. Most of the shower activity with the front will occur Friday night, leaving the day mainly rain-free and hinting at a Summer preview as humidity increases ahead of the front. The front itself may be slow to depart Saturday leaving some cloudiness around and a risk of a few showers as well, but it will end up generally dry and a little cooler as the day goes on. A small area of high pressure will bring mainly dry weather much of Sunday but an approaching warm front may bring some rain as early as Sunday night. Not sure yet if this front stays nearby or lifts to the north and allows it to warm up Monday. Jury’s out on this part of the forecast for now.

Disturbance moving through today has already brought most of its rain across eastern areas with less to the west, but unstable enough for some lingering cloudiness and a few additional pop up showers after we get some sun to cook them up, but they will be the exception not the rule for most of the region. High pressure builds in for midweek and we’ll be on the cool side of it Wednesday and the warmer side Thursday. Next frontal system is in Friday with a rain shower risk but mild air. Improvement arrives early in the weekend as things will be moving along once again.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 18-22)…
Boston Marathon Forecast: As the various races begin, temperature ranged from the upper 30s to upper 40s along the course early, coolest in the lower interior areas, but will rise fairly rapidly through the 50s, reaching highs in the 60s along most of the course with a near 70 top reading possible. As the race goes on, a north wind of 5 to 15 MPH will turn to the east and the temperature will start to fall closer to Boston into the upper to middle 50s. Sunshine will be dominant overall but as the afternoon progresses and the later runners arrive there will be more cloudiness.
The weather today is still be influenced by high pressure trying to hang on but a front pressing southward will be bringing the cloudiness later in the day. The initial wind shift will be due to a sea breeze and not the actual front, which will pass by tonight. A wave of low pressure along it will enhance moisture for a period of rain mainly in the overnight and early morning hours. A clearing trend will begin after a cloudy and damp start on Tuesday, but it will also be on the cool side and turning windy. High pressure builds in with fair and cool weather Wednesday along with a gusty breeze, then this high sinks to the south and a warm up arrives for Thursday. By Friday, a front approaching from the west will bring some rain showers to the area but it will still be quite mild.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 16-20)…
Offshore storm gets close enough to cause more wind as it pushes against high pressure over the Northeast. The storm will also toss some clouds onto Cape Cod and Nantucket for part of the day today. High pressure will be more overhead Sunday continuing to provide fair weather. As we have been doing for several days now, we continue to watch for a cold front dropping down from the north and a small attendant wave of low pressure which still looks like it will impact the region more during the Monday night and early Tuesday time frame, but drive a new cool air mass in during Tuesday as the low strengthens offshore while moving away. For Monday itself, it looks like plenty of dry weather for both the Red Sox at Fenway in the late morning and early afternoon and for runners and spectators of the Boston Marathon. The tricky part of the forecast continues to be temperatures, which should be on the mild to warm side but still may drop fairly quickly at some point in the afternoon closer to Boston, as even without the front having passed the area would still be capable of a sea breeze developing. Looking ahead to Wednesday, low pressure moving away and high pressure moving in means cool and breezy but fair.

High pressure remains centered to the north of the region through Friday, providing fair but cool weather. The winds will increase from the northeast Friday into Saturday as an offshore storm squeezes the pressure gradient for a while as it tracks westward then southward. The only other potential impact from this would be some clouds for a time on Saturday. High pressure sinks to the south later in the weekend allowing for a warm-up by Sunday though some coastal areas will still be on the cooler side. Watching a front from the north for Monday for timing of a wind shift and a significant temperature drop. At this time, still several days out, leaning toward this occurring late in the day or at night, but will watch it due to the fact there is a daytime Red Sox game and of course the Boston Marathon.

Cold front slogs through the region west to east today, producing a ribbon of rainfall for part of the day, though clearing approaching from the west after the front passes may allow the sun to shine before it sets, especially the further west you are. High pressure builds in but centers itself north of the region Wednesday through Saturday. An offshore storm system may get close enough by Saturday for some cloudiness in the region though expecting it to remain dry at this time.
TODAY: Cloudy through mid afternoon including a period of rain west to east. Slow clearing west to east beginning late afternoon. Highs in the 50s. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with gusts 25-35 MPH common and isolated gusts above 35 MPH mainly this morning, diminishing gradually and shifting to W during the afternoon.

Continued mainly dry with fairly seasonable temperatures April 19-21.

Warm front today causes areas of light rain/sleet to start the day then the rain should become very patchy and remain generally well northwest of Boston by afternoon, allowing for OK conditions for the Red Sox home opener this afternoon. A cold front moves in Tuesday with more widespread rainfall. Continuing with the idea of a slow progression of this front offshore so lingering cloudiness Wednesday, then high pressure building in later in the week but its center remaining north of the region allowing a cooler north to northeast wind to dominate.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 9-13)…
High pressure builds north of the region today and tonight while elongated low pressure sneaks out just south of New England, close enough for cloudiness but too far south for any precipitation other than brief rain/snow Cape Cod and Islands tonight. High pressure extends southward Sunday with more sun, but a gusty wind and cold air around will make it feel less like April and more like February or early March. As has been the case for quite some time, weather systems continue to move right along, and this means clouds and some light precipitation (rain/mix/snow) will be here as early as the late-night hours of Sunday night, into Monday morning, as a warm front approaches from the next low pressure system. With a little luck, this front will make it through the region for a bit milder air coinciding with the Red Sox home opener at Fenway Park on Monday afternoon. At this point it looks like any lingering precipitation would be in the form of rain and remain northwest of Boston. This won’t be the case for too long, however, as a cold front will slide into the region with increasing rain chances by Monday night and into Tuesday. This system should push offshore as high pressure builds in from the north during Wednesday. There is some question this far in advance at how quickly clearing will arrive, but will just leave some cloudiness in the forecast for now and adjust later, if needed.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 8-12)…
And upper level low crossing the region today will make the atmosphere unstable and create some cloudiness and spot rain showers. High pressure builds to the north of the region for the weekend but has enough push to keep a developing storm just far enough to the south and in a configuration that only a brief period of rain/snow is possible Saturday night over the South Coast region of New England. This high will deliver plenty of chilly air, however. A warm front will approach on Monday and may trigger some very light snow/mix/rain. The warm air will get in but an approaching cold front Tuesday will likely trigger more widespread rain showers.
TODAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated to scattered rain showers. Highs in the lower to middle 50s. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy early, then clearing. Lows in the 30s. Wind W 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. A period of rain and snow possible near the South Coast. Lows in the middle 20s to lower 30s. Wind NE 5-15 MPH but higher gusts near the South Coast.

High pressure builds north of the region with fair weather but cool temperatures, especially coast, April 13-15. Upper level low pressure area may back westward toward the region for the April 16-17 with more cloudiness and some risk of spotty rain.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 18-22)…
