Tuesday June 9 2020 Forecast

DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 9-13)

Easily my worst forecast for a day in advance in quite some time. The first push of warming at the surface and aloft produced far more cloudiness than I anticipated just 24 hours prior, so we get a cloudy start to the day today and even some patches of rain across southern NH and northeastern MA to go along with it. If I was going to miss that badly it could have at least turned out to be a more significant rainfall to help out with our abnormally dry conditions, but that’s not the case. So today will feature less sun than I had previously advertised here as we get a warm front starting to approach the region and a northwesterly air flow aloft pushing moisture down across the region. This is not an atypical late spring / early summer set-up here, but I didn’t anticipate it being this pronounced. Other than the showers that are around to start the day, I don’t expect much more in the way of precipitation until Wednesday night when we have gotten into the warm and more humid air and then a cold front will approach from the west, continuing that chance of shower and possible thunderstorm activity Thursday. This front will clear the region Friday with a push of slightly drier air into the region, although it will be the warmest of the next 4 days. Things change on Saturday when high pressure builds in eastern Canada and we turn cooler again, probably with some cloudiness but dry weather.

TODAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers possible through mid morning southern NH and eastern MA. Highs 73-80. Wind NW 5-15 MPH becoming variable.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 55-62. Wind variable up to 10 MPH becoming E.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 67-74 coast, 75-82. Wind E-SE 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Risk of showers. More humid. Lows 58-65. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers and possible thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 77-84, cooler South Coast. Wind S-SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Risk of showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Humid. Lows 63-70. Wind S-SW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Slightly less humid., Highs 77-84. Wind SW-W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Lows 60-67. Wind W 5-15 MPH shifting to N.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 68-75, coolest coast. Wind N 5-15 MPH shifting to E.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 14-18)

Overall pattern features high pressure in eastern Canada and low pressure south of New England. High pressure should be strong enough for dry weather to start, then low pressure may be close enough for more cloudiness and occasional showers middle of the period before drier weather returns later in the period. Even with a potential period of unsettled weather in here it does not look like our region will receive very much in the way of beneficial rain.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 19-23)

Large scale pattern is expected to feature a ridge in the middle of the US and a weak to moderate northwesterly air flow over the Northeast. This would be a pattern of variable temperatures but no prolonged heat, but would allow for a little more of a summertime feel than the days preceding it will have. Below normal rainfall is expected but 1 or 2 shower/t-storm chances are possible in this pattern from disturbances moving along the flow.

  1. This is published in Twenty-Eleven which was the first test layout from Monday June 1. I’m going to play around with it today so don’t be surprised if the appearance of the blog changes a few times.

  2. Of all the days…the earliest sunrise of the year (5:07 am) and it starts out as the cloudiest. Oh well. 🙁

  3. At least this format allows to save names and emails as well as a time stamp for comments. Would like a bolder print for names. Still remains to be seen what replies look like.

      1. Hmmm…not too bad.

Thursday’s still in the lead for me but this does have potential.

        Yesterday’s was HORRIBLE!!!

  4. The “Previous” and “next” blog icons do not work. You must click scroll back to the top of the page and click “Home”.

Forget what I said about “potential”.

  5. Hello TK,

Thanks for the forecast as always.

I would like to see the bloggers name in bold.

“Previous” link at top right took me to the C-19 blog.

You have Friday down twice in today’s blog. 2nd one should be Friday Night.

I kinda like this one as well as the one everyone likes with colors at the top.

    Thanks again.

  6. Good morning and thank you TK.

After viewing all of the formats, coming back to this one isn’t bad. I would rate
    it as #3 after Thursday’s and Sunday’s.

2 things really stick out on this one:
    1. Poster’s name is in a small font and is not bold
    2. Navigation sucks. There are no links on the side. This is a deal breaker.

  7. I find it interesting that TK’s comment is in darker gray as opposed to the rest of us. Is it because it is the “first” comment or because he’s the creator of this format?

    1. Great catch, Philip. I didn’t see that. I like it. I wonder if that applies to all of just TK’s or the first post of the day by anyone.

  8. Interesting…when I first load up the site, navigation is there with links on
the right side. However, visit the covid page and come back to the forecast
page and Poof, the navigation is gone. This is a deal breaker.

  9. Good Morning. I love when someone says “my worst forecast.” Not that I love it was your worst but that you have the confidence in your forecasting to be able to say opps.

I love this format on my computer and ipad. I have to scroll on my iPhone to bottom to see latest comments, but at least there is navigation. Overall – not bad. I do like the nesting.

    1. Yikes – I saw JPDs comment about navigation and wondered what he was referring to. I had opened first on my ipad and THERE IS NAVIGATION on the right side. On my iPhone, THERE IS navigation on the bottom. On my PC, THERE IS NOT navigation. That just seems backwards. Usually something presents more fully on a computer or lap top. Oh – by PC – mine is a laptop connected to a larger screen.

  10. So I closed this window to do some work and when I returned, the navigation was on the right side again. Maybe you changed something, TK?

    1. There is absolutely NOTHING on the right side other than a bit of aqua colored thin strip. I am on an iPhone (Apple).

      1. It depends on device you are using because it is there on my iPad, occasionally on my PC and at bottom on my iPhone.

      1. Still a few years before my time. I believe that was even before Don Kent was broadcasting.

Not to mention, the ‘good’ old days way before Warning systems.

      2. I was 6 years old, soon to be 7 and was living in Norwood, MA. Yes, a fair distance from Worcester, say 30 miles or
there about. I can still remember pieces of roofing shingles
falling from an overcast sky. I’ll never forget that. Really
        weird.

          1. Can’t say for sure. I can say if it wasn’t, it was
soon thereafter. I also lived through hurricanes
Carol and Edna in 1954 and vividly remembering the downed steeple of
            St. Catherine’s church (our parish).
We had to attend Mass in the school gymnasium.

  11. To get an F4 tornado in New England is rare like what happened in Worcester. I could only think of two F4 tornadoes in CT. The Windsor Locks CT Tornado October 1979 and the Hamden CT tornado on July 10, 1989 which was part of a big severe weather outbreak in the northeast. To me that July 10, 1989 severe weather outbreak is still the benchmark when it comes to severe outbreaks in the northeast in my life time.

  12. Thanks TK. So next week (on most of the models) is now looking suspiciously like that period a few weeks ago where it looked like we would have days on end of unseasonably cold and showery weather. In reality, that turned out to be mainly a pleasant stretch. So how will it go this time? Days of cold rain showers, or will the high be strong enough to keep SNE sunny and dry once again?

    1. Side with high pressure.

“When heading for drought, leave it out.” (A variation on what SAK said).

  13. Well there was definitely no winning for me in today’s forecast.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, when my forecast go bad they go bad. 😀

  14. Thanks, TK…
    Another fine late spring day.

Remembering a very hot day 12 years ago today, one of the hottest day in my teaching career. Back-to-back 95-degree days, June 9-10. It was stifling hot in my classroom and I remember that I had to coach a Little League game later that afternoon. We had an early four-day heatwave at that time.

My first day ever teaching was a hot day, September 7, 1983. Me in my suit with a high temperature of 93.

One of Worcester tornadoes dissipated over Wrentham, Foxborough and Mansfield causing some damage in South Foxboro and over the border in Mansfield.

    1. 1983 was still by far the most brutal summer of all of them around here, especially due to the way it lingered through September like it was July.

    1. Nice Vicki! Looks much like the original format. I could go along with that permanently if I could view it that way.

Interesting that different devices have totally different views.

  15. Haha I was just playing with the colors & header pic. Not much more I can do with this version. It is very similar to the original in terms of options.

    1. TK – As I mentioned above, why do different devices show different formats?

Vicki’s iPad is spot on! 🙂

      1. You’d have to talk to the programmers of the devices. Basically, it comes down to programming / formatting. It varies from device to device. I’m about as far from a programmer as one can get so I can’t offer any more than that for an explanation. 🙂

      2. In many cases templates are set up to be seen on larger sceeens and smaller so I’m guessing that may be a reason

    1. I have no idea. They are all stock photos. Whenever I can get the right set-up, I’m going to start using my own photos. I have thousands of them. 😉

  16. This may already have been said but the “original” feature I liked most was clicking on the most recent comment and being taken right to the current conversation. Would love to see that functionality preserved TK.
