Thursday April 1 2021 Forecast (7:42AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 1-5)

The new month starts off wet with an upside down temperature day. The most widespread and heaviest rain shower activity went through overnight and is gone, but some additional showers hang on as a cold front continues to move through the region, slowly at first, then a bit more quickly as an area of low pressure pulls away from the region and yanks the front offshore. This will introduce a cold air mass which will be felt in force tonight and Friday as we get a gusty northwesterly air flow. Some clearing takes place tonight but clouds may fill back in on Friday due to solar heating of the ground interacting with cold air aloft. Saturday will be the pick of the next 5 days, sunniest and least chilly. Saturday night and Sunday, a disturbance will return some clouds and cooler air to the region. All the while, the atmosphere will see a blocking pattern evolving and by Monday, low pressure from the Canadian Maritimes will head westward and bring a chilly northerly air flow and lots of clouds, and possibly some precipitation (not likely a lot) to the region.

TODAY: Cloudy morning with lingering rain showers. Mostly cloudy with a few breaks of sun possible afternoon and only a slight chance of a rain shower. Highs 45-52 except 52-59 east I-95 before falling into the 40s. Wind shifting to NW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy evening with a very light rain or snow shower possible southeastern NH and eastern MA. Partial clearing overnight. Lows 30-37. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, gusts to 30 MPH.

FRIDAY: Partial sun morning. Mostly cloudy afternoon. Highs 41-48. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts especially in the morning.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Gradual clearing. Lows 27-34. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Sunny morning. Partly sunny afternoon. Highs 53-60. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy evening. Mostly cloudy with a passing shower of rain/mix/snow possible overnight. Lows 33-40. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy with a passing shower of rain/mix/snow possible morning. Partly sunny afternoon. Highs 48-55. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 30-37. Wind N 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. A rain or snow shower possible. Highs 40-47. Wind N 10-20 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 6-10)

Large scale blocking pattern continues with low pressure nearby, but positioned that we’re on the drier side with no temperature extremes (cool days, nights that are not too cold). A couple bouts of unsettled weather are possible but no major precipitation events.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 11-15)

Reorganizing blocking – one low pulls away to the east, new low arrives from the west and takes up residence. This doesn’t mean rainy weather for days, just a tendency for unsettled weather at times and no big temperature extremes. Plenty of fine-tuning to do on this forecast.

  1. Second vaccine in the books

Ssk, is it today that Mrs SSK has her vaccine or tomorrow?

Dr Stupid, I’m hearing very good things about the vaccine site in Uxbridge right down to having a person dedicated to wiping seats and other areas down after use.

    1. Tomorrow Vicki second shot she was able to get it in Hanover instead of going back to Roxbury. Joe got his first shot yesterday because of his heart condition . Good luck hope you have no issues

  2. BTW, had some very heavy rain here early this morning with the system (it was absolutely pouring when I got home at 3:45am). I had 1.79″ in my rain gauge this morning. There’s a personal wx station about 1/2 mile away from me that reported 1.82″ for a total.

  3. Today’s 12z GFS is very “springtime” regarding our weather pattern, keeping in mind where we live of course…………

    1. So for all practical purposes we can now safely put away our shovels and/or snowblowers for the season? 😉

        1. Vicki – the uxbridge site was very nice and easy. The firefighter/emt who gave me my shot was comforting because I hate hate hate needles. But that’s one shot down one to go!

Re weather: I’m calling it – snow shovels are going away for the season.

          1. Awesome news. My son also detests needles. I have never minded them and even I was nervous before each vaccine. I do wish we could have at least met for a minute since you were literally a hop, skip and jump away.

            How are you feeling?

            1. I am fine! A little bit of an ache in my arm but nothing else. I was definitely nervous ahead of it though. Worried about getting the second shot more than the first. I made the mistake of not eating beforehand so I think that contributed to it. Wouldn’t have even been able to meet up since I was on a strict schedule that was then set awry trying to find a good place to get food in me fast. lol

(The last time I met someone from this blog was TK in the late 90’s at a bbs meetup I think haha)

              1. Good news and my older daughter said her big mistake was not eating first also. I don’t normally eat anything until late morning so I had a few saltines pre 9:30 vaccine and then meal when I returned.

I did hydrate even more than normal ahead. I was nervous for this one today but so far have sore arm..fair amount worse than first …and headache. I’m alternating cold on head and heat on arm and vice versa every 15 min or so. It helps. And nothing I can’t easily handle

Hope you have a good night !

      1. Nothing has changed about my belief in keeping them handy through April. Even when I put mine “away” they are not far out of reach. I mean you never know when we might get an accumulating hail event in the middle of summer. 😉

        1. Since both sons in law have put their snowblowers away for the summer, I will be amazed if we don’t have a blockbuster

          1. Well, where you are, it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility! Even Boston has had a snowstorm of 2 feet in April. 🙂

  4. NWS sticking to their guns of “sunny” tomorrow. I’m staying with my diurnal cloud clusters. The key to me is what was going on a few hundred miles to our west today.

  5. As of the morning update, NWS finally changed their wording for today’s sky forecast (for my area which is the only one I looked at)…

Point forecast now says “Increasing clouds.”
Zone forecast now says “Mostly sunny, then becoming mostly cloudy.”

    Now I agree with them.

Also, the actual blog updates (C-19 & forecasts posts) will be delayed today but should be available around noon if all goes to plan. In the mean time, I haven’t changed the forecast posted yesterday anyway.

  6. Thanks for the heads up, TK.

It has finally made it to 25 here.

Vicki, I’m thinking that the Sutton mosquitoes may be toast after last night and what’s anticipated for tonight. May it be!

        1. I was sitting outside last week waiting for my car to get an oil change when I noticed that something resembling a mosquito had landed on the back of my hand. I thought, nah, it can’t be — but maybe it was…

  7. So far, with the deep blue sky, brisk wind and fairly chilly temps, today reminds me of April 5, 1982. Those of a certain age (including TK) would know what I mean. 🙂

    1. Yes indeed. I have audio recordings of NWS Boston on this day (the day before the storm).

  8. Well it is 10:28 AM and the clouds are beginning to appear.
Perhaps 20-25% sky coverage. If it stays that way, it would be great, but I am guessing by Noon it will be 75-100% coverage.
    We shall see.

Has only warmed to 33 here. Brrr for April. Not out of the usual, but much colder than one would like, especially for a baseball game.

  9. We have been spotted with marshmallow clouds most of morning. I’d say also about 25 percent. And is 35

  10. Admin account is backup and I am going to update now…

Will let you know when it is finished.

  11. I am hoping for more rain here in St. Thomas USVI, its bone dry. much of the grass is brown, there are trees with no leaves ( normal to have trees loose leaves this time of year but this has been a very bad dry season) Need that rain to fill up my cistern.
