Saturday PM Update

2:37PM

Warmer today than even I thought it would be! And a fantastic day to take down the outside decorations, that is between periods of the Bruins game. Good thing I started this morning.

So not much of a weather discussion on this update, just a quick forecast update based on my latest look at things. Another update should followed by tomorrow morning and then the full discussion of the week ahead tomorrow evening. Still watching the storm for midweek and it still looks like a rain producer. Not quite ready to dive into anyΒ  kind of “real” winter pattern just yet. Still waiting…

    1. But the last few frames show how quickly it gets on out of here…
With at least 2 PV breakdowns coming up, I don’t have much trust in any model run for the next week or 2 regarding the long range.

  1. TK thank you but please, please do not worry about the blog. We are all playing and having fun. You have had a really difficult start to the year and now with not feeling well yourself, please take time for just you!

    1. I’m fine. I took yesterday off from “blogging” for the most part, knowing we had no imminent nastiness on the way.

Still finding a way to get things done. It’s my nature. I learned from my mom. πŸ™‚ I have enjoyed a few hours outside today which have been quite nice. As much as I love cold/snow/classic winter weather I am thinking of a day like today as a blessing, being able to get the outside stuff done so easily and quickly. Last year we had to wait 2 months to get everything out from under. πŸ˜‰

      1. TK – I learned the same from my mom – I am my own worst enemy when it comes to not being able to just relax. Although the older I get, the more I seem to be able to just sit (for short spurts) and enjoy what nature has to offer. To me this is a lovely day because it is a surprise gift! We’ll get snow soon enough!

  2. As I said in the previous blog is this just a short blast of colder weather or does this have some staying power?
    What is a PV???

        1. I come from a big football family tk, it’s football everyday all the time, then baseball then basketball then hockey which Im not a big fan of but I’ll root for bruins though, football is king though by far, GO PATRIOTS!! Hope everything is good πŸ™‚

          1. Not to sound arrogant but I could name every player on the patriots 53 man roster, but I couldn’t name 5 bruins, it started at childhood, u should c my kids, huge patriot fans πŸ™‚

            1. I’m kinda lucky in a sense though tk bc when I go outa town no one every asked me about the bruins it’s always Patriots or Redsox.

              1. Charlie my SIL can name them all too and probably most on every other team. He loves football and he and my son were also outside tossing the ball around for a long time today!

              2. You don’t sound arrogant. You’d be surprised at the kinds of things I can name that nobody remembers. You know what you know. Sometimes it’s useless knowledge, and sometimes it comes in very handy!

    1. I think even when and if this colder air comes it shows signs of moderating towards the end of period, before ya know it hadi in 6 weeks the sun will be setting at 545pm, it’s kinda crazy πŸ™‚

  3. Above my swimming pool there r these mini bugs flying about the water of my pool, ive never seen this in jan

    1. I saw a few very large flies out today than I don’t recall seeing in January before.

    1. Actually hadi I’m not when the weather does this I tend to get so mad at the weather and I may sound like I’m a snow hater but if I saw a 2 ft blizzard coming I would be a very happy man

  4. The most blue I saw on the CPC 6-10 day outlook that I have seen quite sometime.
The PV was strong to winter’s ago and also the NAO was too negative.

  5. We got down to Myles Standish Forest today. Absolutely beautiful and in the woods, quite comfortable, even without a jacket. I see Logan shot up to 59F….it will be interesting to see if anytime around the obs, it recorded 60F.

  6. Awesome Day. Took the family down to Luddans Ford Park, goofed off for a little while. There was a good amount of ice left and some ice under the water. When the wind blew off the ice/water it would get chilly, then would warm right back up when it switched directions. We got up to 60 and it smelled like spring/fall. Kind of weird. I also saw some insects flying around.

    1. Yes, exactly Coastal. There are a lot of kettle ponds in Myles Standish and we saw the same thing you and your family did with regards to a small amt of ice on the pond and a cooler downwind breeze.

  7. I have to say….when I woke up yesterday and saw the light dusting of snow…I thought……ok, this is nice……it would be nice to see some more………today, 60F and sunny….now I’m thinking, I like this better !!!

With Logan’s 59F, which is 22F above normal, today is going to end up around +15F. Tomorrow, maybe +5 to +6F. Monday….maybe +2F…..Tuesday and Wednesday….+8 to 10F and Thursday +15F because of a mild overnight low….now Friday, the 850mb heights seem slow to crash immediately following the storm, so another +10F……That brings us to Friday the 13th, nearly half of January and I have to guess that by then, Logan and the other 3 southern New England major climate reporting stations are going to be running +8 to +10F above normal departures…..Could it be that January ends up with higher anomolies than Nov (5.7F) and Dec (5.4) ?

    1. πŸ™‚ my wife and kids took their socks and shoes off and put their feet in the water, at the edge of the pond on the sunny side where there was no ice.

  8. This unusual weather is what makes weather so much fun. Not the norm. True, it’s boring in the sense we aren’t having any storms. But the weirdness of the weather makes it kind of exciting in its own way.

The sky truly looked beautifully strange around 3:30 or so, when clouds moved in from the northwest. And the clouds were moving fast. It almost looked like a thunderstorm was coming. I think that’s about the time or shortly before Boston got a seabreeze, ‘though clouds moving from the west – I don’t know if that would have anything to do with a seabreeze.

  9. * It was neat seeing Logan react like an April day today.

    * Even not feeling well and taking all 3 periods off, I manage to complete the outside decoration take-down & put-away in one day. Not too shabby. Now tomorrow I focus on the inside, and that’s a BIG job. The weather was just perfect for that outside work today, so not to sound like a broken record but this is one reason I’m happy we have been virtually snowless to this point.

    * We are now in our 3rd winter of 3 with completely different dominant patterns. I love it.

  10. Tk- or any hockey fan here. Do you remember a longtime anouncer for the bruins Dave Shea. He was at my house for about 2hs today discussing buisness. He was telling me he lost his job after the strike because they went with Edwards instead, he was telling me though not many people like Edwards call style. I would say him and I are becoming friends, as we do some town things togeather. I brought down my Orr hockey stick. Before he even knew there was a signature on It, he knew who used that kind of stick.

  11. I am not sure if it is the real Bailyman on the BZ blog but he says he sees the pattern changing around the 17th.

    1. Can you ask him to shoot coastal an emai, and send it to WW as well. If you can’t I will try later.

  12. Ants_SNEweather Anthony Siciliano
WOW New 18z GFS now takes midweek storm center SE of Nantucket…usual flooping is suspect , but quite a drastic shift…must watch this

  13. Midweek storm will likely bring some much-needed snow to the mountains. Not much, but still. I do think the storm will set up as a nor’easter with the Low tracking over Chatham. but without sufficient cold in place in the Boston area. Too bad. This said, north of Concord NH I expect the flakes will begin to fly. Perhaps this is wishful thinking on my part, because I just so much want it to snow for my daughter Lisa up in the mountains. She (like her father) loves winter and wants to be where it’s cold and snowy. Thus far, her experience up in Bretton Woods has fallen short a bit as they have had almost no snow and a lot of mild days.

  14. what a beautiful day. we actually started a fire in the pit, cooked hot dogs and ate potato salad as if it were Spring

friday through saturday mostly sunny highs in the mid to high 30s lows in the low 20s

    extended outlook.
seasonally warm temps through the middle of next week . A storm system looks to take aim at us for thursday and it looks more and more like it will effect us in the form of rain . there will be no snow from this. After this storm highs will be more seasonal. The models are hinting at another storm for the early part of the following week.

for people that ski , Wachusett has 16 trails open.

      1. And also myself and Philip calling for a snowstorm for MLK weekend, next weekend 1/14- 1/16. any chances we nail it. I bet something pops up this week that we will be tracking. As I said before I have plans next weekend from start to finish. I also do snow removal, I feel snow foils my plans, I realy do.

      2. weather models and their trends , weather station outside my house which i can put the data togeather and get a forcast by computer connection . I made several parts by my self with the computer stuff with other family members. I have learned alot from this blog, some of my family members, my large collection of books and i have talked to Barry Burbank in person 3 seperate times wich was awsome. He’s a really cool guy.

  16. Joshua I see a good sign for ski areas after next week I think we will change patterns maybe not so drastic but I do think much colder and sustained winter like weather especially up north. 18z has a nice system for the 17-19 time frame so lets see what happens.

18 z also has the storm for Thursday in a pretty decent location just wayyyyyyy too warm ahead of it.

  17. Here is the storm for 19th way too far out but interesting

  18. No doubt Phillip, but the way this winter has gone it would be a miracle. I do think this is the time period to watch.

  19. The end of the 00z GFS πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Note the location of the polar vortex!

  20. Nothing I see on the 00z Euro or GFS screams East Coast snowstorm of any significance. If it happens in the next 10-15 days it’s going to evolve from something not really seen there.
