  1. Thanks TK. This is just unbelievable. I know that mother nature can squeeze out at least one large snow storm for SNE. I think it will be the type that suddenly shows up on the maps unexpectedley, however.

    1. Yes you are so right. I have said this over and over on resent posts, It will be the sneak up storm. I just have a feeling we get hit with one or two big ones
this month. If not wow what a winter. Hey thank’s again for helping me out.

      1. Anytime John. If any more questions, let me know. And yes, I couldnt agree with you more. We have had winters like that where nothing is on the horizon and then one morning you wake up and wham…an event is in the cards. I love those surprises:)

  2. Thank you TK and thank you alisonarod for telling us.

Am listening to chesneys no shoes no shirt no problem and picturing the beach in the window of my mind OS

  3. Here is your HM Big Daddy

  4. I think the 12th has potential but at the same time it could be a nonevent, I’m going with my gut this is a near miss 🙁 just bc of the way winter has been, never bet against a stubborn pattern that doesn’t want to change

  5. Back to my gut feelings. I bet we get it and another as big or bigger. Maybe the second one is the one that sneaks up, or this one. I just can’t come to terms with not having at least one big one this winter. And as I do believe stats can be broken, but in past dud winters if you will, they have gone out in fashion. Is that true or false, I thought I had heard that. My gut feelings though has been off. Watch the one thing that I am saying won’t happen will. And that is snow this march. I had said way back that I think March continues the way it has been snowless.

  6. In my amateur opinion, the 12th, as Hadi said, is a Longshot. However, if my fellow bloggers deliver a SB victory, the Longshot will attempt to make the 12th a snow reality. 🙂

  7. Let’s give HM credit where credit is due. On November 21st he made the following prediction (I did not include the graphs which HM posted on that day):

    Nov 21, 2011; 9:52 AM ET

    Discussion:

This to me is very interesting. Below is the SOI monthly values for 2010-2011. It shows that this time last year the SOI, which is the Southern Oscillation Index that gives you a strength of the El Nino/La Nina, values were very high compared to this year, which has values very low. That means the La Nina is not as strong as last year, and the implications may mean the warmth in the East could continue well through winter. We are planning on updating the winter forecast Dec. 1. I am just concerned that the warmth will last well into January, and looking at the European Monthly, which shows warmth overwhelming much of the central and eastern part of the country, the winter may be very different than last year with a lack of snow and cold. I do believe that snowstorms will occur, but it may be where is snows at 32 degrees that within a day or two, the snow is gone because the warmth comes right back.

    1. If I remember corrctly, HM posted back in December that we would not see any significant snow until the mid of Feb.

  8. This winter really does feel like when I lived in the south, whenever it snowed a little it was gone a day later

  9. By the way, I was in central NJ for work today. It was downright balmy. My goodness. No feel or look of winter anywhere around.

I heard on NECN (Matt Noyes) that cold is blanketing many parts of the world, but not the entire lower 48 (except the far Northeastern corner of Maine!). While TK is right that these things do happen (duds like this winter), they are still very rare. I’ve never experienced it, not like this. Even 1980/1981 featured some serious persistent cold, in December, I believe. This winter is basically a continuation of fall, interspersed with an occasional wintry day. It’s as if winter is bypassing a part of the world it normally likes to visit. So strange. So sad, in my view.

  10. Thanks TK. I was all excited when I read the first line of your 5:24pm post, that was until I got to the second comma! Another warm up… UGH!

  11. From what I understand the groundhog saw its shadow but as always I listen to the new only half awake.

The crocuses and daffodils on the side of my house that were not out the other night are showing this morning. I do believe nature has made its own predictions for the rest of winter.

    1. Buds emerging this early worries me Vicki, especially if we really do get a couple of good storms with some prolonged cold. Not likely, though 🙂

      1. shotime – I’ve seen these daffodils do fine through lots of storms. Somehow the plants seem to handle it. I just talked to a friend in New Ipswich NH who is a weather enthusiast. She went out to check and sure enough she has some daffodils coming up behind her barn. She’s never had hers show up same time as mine.

        1. I was just reading that as long as the buds remain below ground and only the leaves surface this early, then yes they will do fine. But of course, if this winter remains on its track of warm, warm and warmer… then it doesn’t matter and we’ll see flowers in March 🙂

  12. Until we see some corroboration from the Euro, I am highly suspect of anything
for 2/10 or 2/12 as currently depicted by the 06Z GFS. Unless I am missing something, I didn’t see anything on the Euro????

This insane Winter season just continues to roll on. ALREADY we have Exceeded
forecasted highs for today!!! Same ole, Same Ole

    1. great article shotime – I’ve saved it. It’s pretty much what I’ve seen in the past with some of the earlier budding bushes showing somewhat fewer flowers/leaves. My honeysuckle tends to show some stress when its leaves arrive too early, but it was far more stressed after last year’s winter. My mountain laurels and rhododendrons suffered last year with the extreme snow far more than they do when they bud early.

When my kids were little, my in-laws lived in Charleston SC We drove down every April vacation. We didn’t see dogwood until we reached NJ. My daffodils didn’t show up until we returned home. Each year I noticed the blooming trees/flowers moved further north. As it was pointed out here, our growing zone has now officially changed. As you know, although I believe it is cyclical also, I feel man has a lot to do with this.

      1. A few years ago a friend recommended that I burlap my hydrangeas because they were not producing enough flowers. Whal-lah, that did it! For the past few years, my hydrangeas have been absolutely stunning. As for my Rhododendrons, once I got past some disease issues, they have been pretty hardy. Except for some root protection consisting of a bed of mulched leaves, they remain uncovered through the winter.

        1. my rhododendrum has some disease issue – how did you work past yours?? My mountain laurels seem to have the same. All showed up after last winter

          1. Vicki, I didn’t do anything special except for cutting back the affected areas and applying Miracle-Gro fertilizer specifically for Rhododendrons and Azaleas plants. (30-10-10). So far, so good.

      2. it all depends on location. even if the overall zone is a 6 in eastern mass. my family sticks with zone 5 in the back yard with 5 to 6 in the front.
my grandfather has a large peice of land . in templeton mass the field is much cooler than in front of the house.
front of the house a zone 5 while the area behind the house is a 4 and 5 while the field is zone 4. He has 2 large vegeatable gardens, apple trees, blue berry bushes and a few grape vines. you can not see the field from the house. since there is an area of woods between the backyard and field there is a path leading up to the field with wild strawberries and blueberries growing on the edge of the path. Each year they come earlier than the last. i wonder how early the fresh food will comeout this year.

        1. Sounds absolutely beautiful! My grandparents retired from Yonkers, NY and bought a 40 acre lot in Langdon, NH (near Bellows Falls). I remember as a child watching the chickadees eating right from my grandmother’s hand. Some awesome childhood memories 🙂

  13. After the mildest of winters until as recently as last week, Europe’s getting nailed:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-16845121

The cold has spread basically everywhere across the Northern hemisphere except the lower 48 of the US (where virtually every winter sees its fair share of persistent cold and snow, but not this time around). Very odd. As a (social) scientist, such anomalies appeal to me because they cry out for explanation.

    1. As my former coworker and MA State Climatologist always says.. Anomalies are just part of what makes up the long term averages. And I agree.

      1. Does he say whether we have seen the tremendous melting of the ice caps at any part in our history? I agree that there are always swings. I don’t agree it is all cyclical when it gets as dramatic as it is. I wonder if the growing zone in MA has ever been raised or lowered. Would make an interesting bit of research.

      2. Agree to an extent. And please understand that I am not an alarmist. While I believe we have seen climate shifts over the past few decades, atrributing this odd winter to climate change is not a logical, nor even reasonable step to take, particularly when confronted with evidence that the polar ice cap may actually gain some this year given the extended period of extreme cold in parts of the arctic. I still think, however, that anomalies deserve researchers’ attention. Concluding at the end of this winter that we’ve witnessed an outlier or fluke would not be satisfactory to me. I want to know why. I think that phenomena in nature (but also behavioral patterns) happen for a reason, or have an underlying cause.

        1. Joshua I totally agree. I’ve seen winters like this in the past and didn’t mean to indicate I thought it was attributable to climate change although I believe it sounded that way. I think other factors – melts and growing zone changes – etc are more of an indication.

Of course none of us will be around to know the outcome but IMHO we need to stop polluting our earth – no matter what it has or has not caused.

No one can convince me that destroying some part of the planet (e.g., the rain forests) does not have an overall affect.

  14. Well the weather is great for me today, unloading my entire basement into a pod!! No rain/snow no sun to heat me up, just perfect for manual labor.

    1. Hope the GFS is on since the Euro is looking way too warm. Pretty sad when we have to bank on one snow event for the winter.

  15. Geologic records show polar ice free periods before mankind. And of course ice ages. So we know that long term dramatic shifts do take place.

    1. You’re right, TK. The problem is that we should not then behave as if man’s behavior has no impact. Ane here is where I have issues with politicians of all stripes who appear oblivious to man’s destructive tendencies.

A lot of what we have been doing since the industrial revolution is progress and, on balance, has benefitted humankind. I am not a “let’s return to our hunter-gatherer” days kind of person. However, some things we’ve been doing since the industrial revolution have not benefitted humankind.

While we’re not certain whether man is influencing the current warming of the earth’s temperatures, we have plenty of evidence to suggest that man’s impact on our environment has been detrimental, is currently detrimental, and will continue to be detrimental without policies in place that: a. conserve energy; b. protect endangered wildlife; and c. provide for continued conservation (and proper zoning) of land and sea, whether in the form of state and national forests and seashores, or wildlife sanctuaries. Whether it’s deforestation, extinction of species through unbridled hunting, fishing, or crowding out, air quality, ozone layer depletion, usage of pesticides like DDT, and many other means by which we (all of us) have a negative impact on our environment.

This is not a partisan call for action, or an alarmist one. I just think that all of us ought to pause when considering what life would be like, for instance, without the Cape Cod National Seashore (it would all look like Old Orchard beach), the White Mountain National Forest (timber companies would have a blast, but would that be to our benefit?), ban on DDT (DDT almost killed the Eastern bluebird and even the cardinal population), and even zoning laws like keeping Commonwealth Avenue virtually commercial-free (would any of us really want to see one of the most beautiful avenues in America be littered with neon signs, McDonald’s, and gas stations?).

      1. Regardless of how much I think we influence things, I completely agree (as I sip my McDonald’s coffee). 🙂

  16. Just to get back to the groundhog for a moment…what about our own “Miss G” and HER shadow? Will SNE have 6 more weeks of winter? 😉

    1. Btw, I do not recall seeing any sunshine so far today here in Boston…do not know about other communities.

  17. I heard a rumble first. A book fell from a shelf, and something else landed on the floor in another room. I was suddenly awake, and alert. Everything was still for a long moment, and i almost let myself believe that nothing was amiss. Then came the noise.

It was some kind of high pitched animal scream, but it had the force of something large, you could tell that something huge was making that sound. Something far too huge.

I threw off the covers and grabbed my shorts from the floor, turning on the lamp as I tried to dress. Once I was in at least slippers and a t-shirt I went to the living room and was about to open the door when the noise sounded again, and this time it was closer. I hesitated, but still opened the door to the night and stepped outside.

It was the hedgehog. I remembered then that it was February 2nd. But I was too late. He had seen me, and my shadow cast by the hallway light. I closed my eyes as he crashed his way across the yard, and as his foot crushed the garage.

  18. 12Z Euro looks like it comes up empty. The Big Daddy for the 10-12th looks like it
is off the Grid! Ahh what else is new?

The Patriots better win or we’ll be even more miserable than we already are.

Can we at least have INCREASING chance of Gronkowski?
I posted the following the other night, late. Not sure if the good folks here got to see it.
Please forgive me if you have seen this:

    MAKE ROOM FOR GRONKLINGS

    http://mt.nesn.com/.a/6a0115709f071f970b0167616f8bfd970b-800wi

    1. I’m so glad you reposted. I didn’t see it the other night and didn’t have any idea what to expect so just burst out laughing.

The ducklings are very dear to me – when my kids were little the first thing my mom did to celebrate spring was take them on the swan boats!

    1. That went well. Trying to make a smily face? Guess I’m going to have to ask.
So how does one place a smiley face on the blog? I haven’t a clue???????

      Many thanks

  19. I would definitely throw in the towel. We have been pushing back winter so much that soon we’ll be pushing it back into summer. There is nothing on the maps. Each day that goes by we get more sun minutes from the increased sun angle which makes it more difficult to get an important snowstorm in here. I don’t mean to sound like a downer and of course, historically, we have had many snow storms here SNE from Feb-April. However, I believe in patterns and it’s sensical to deduce that we should cruise right into spring.

    1. If I hurt my left rib cage during the fall but not showing break, that would be called bruised right. And is it normal to still feel pain there. Just not sure if she will clear me too soon tomorrow. Thank’s. I need to be 100% for my job.

      1. John if an x-ray excluded a rib fracture then this is termed a chest wall contusion, otherwise known as a “bruised rib.” However, chest wall pain can last weeks to sometimes months if the bruise was severe enough, so yes, it is still plausible to still have pain. Feel better.

        1. One more question as I don’t want to be rude. If I feel I may need another week to recover should I explain this to her. I do physical work all day. Lifting, bending and need full use of both hands. On Monday when I checked in at OH the swelling had gone down alot since thursday.
I suspect when she takes it off tomorrow it will be down more. If not swolen but still not right I am just not sure how she will look at me if I say I think I need more time to heal. She is not my doctor but works with him. Since She saw me last week I thought I would stick with her. I am sorry to bother you with this as you come here to chill, not give advice like you do all day on your time. Just confused.

            1. And I do not mind giving medical advice as long as it is understood that without putting my hands on the patient, it should only be considered just “advice.” Ask anytime:)

          1. John. I do not think it is unreasonable to ask for additional time off should light duty not be an option at your place of employment. Doesn’t sound like light duty is available given the type of work that you do. I tend to listen to my patients and if they still feel pain, I tend to keep them out until they are pain free. The last thing your provider wants to do is ignore her patient’s documented complaints and then put him back to work too soon only to result in further injury. That could be reviewed as irresponsible and negligent as part of the provider and law suit against the provider could ensue. Hopefully, she will listen to her patient (you) and do the right thing. Good luck.

            1. Your advice to me was awesome. And yes light duty is not an option at all. I may ask to be kept out next week, I will let you know how I made out. For you to answer my concearns means so much as I can’t thank you enough. Like I was saying to you before somtimes we bring other things up here and people offer help or advice here. Thats what makes this blog what it is AWESOME. As we all know we talk mostly weather but have the freedom to bring other thing’s up. You are a good fit here don’t go anywhere.

          2. John we have some great medical personnel. I can tell alisonarod is one. We also have some who are not great. You heard the story of my grandson on new years and my granddaughter was misdiagnosed this week and we have always had docs considered the best. My advice is you be your own advocate. You know yourself best and a physician needs to respect that. Sorry i know you didn’t ask me but I have a friend in heart surgery tonight and he was sent home last week with “anxiety” and was almost sent home again today so I’m a bit grumpy

            1. Very true Vicky. As I stated above, I always listen to my patient. Diagnosing a patient doesn’t require intelligence. It merely requires a good ear;) That’s always how I’ve practiced medicine.

  20. The EURO is having some issues, 12z run wants to bring some very chilly weather in the long range.
I took note at the train of storm that the 12z GFS advertized.
Currently 33 degrees here with a few flakes in the air, a far cry from yesterday!

  21. I was taken back by the weather today. Cold, raw and rainy day here on the south shore. We even had some flakes flying about an hour ago.

  22. Bm posted about an hour ago on wbz. Good read as I think it was him. I asked him if he responded to the invite. I am not sure where coastal has been, hope all is well with him.

        1. No Way. I know you were just letting us know what
he posted. I just honestly don’t believe it, that is all.

          1. This winter has been just crazy. I can’t see us going the entire winter with no real snow. I think we get one or two maybe. But no real event at all, that would be weird. OS what does your gut tell you. As I said earlier I think are chances are getting smaller the closer we get to March, in my oppinion working with a small window of time here.

    1. John – this is the email I have that you can use – just let me know if you post it since I never check it and will be careful to watch once you use it.

      tadams9999@gmail.com

I want to be sure this is ok with TK and that I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes here. Just let me know what to do if you do use it and a person responds. Do I just give them this URL?

      1. Thank’s. I am going to keep checking to see if he responds. I will check first with you before posting that info.

  23. I am wondering if the spring is going to be cool and wet. When we see below normal snowfall and above normal temps it usually is followed by wet and cool springs. Is there any science behind it i just noticed this a few weeks ago after looking at the records that i kept after the past 8 years. I have a whole shelf of them. Does anyone else see this pattern.

  24. HM’s post from this morning. Hope it verifies. He is easy to poke fun at, but his longer range forecasts have actually not been half bad this winter. As discouraging as it seems now, I am just not of the belief that we get through another entire month w/out at least one widespread moderate to significant storm. It’s just not going to happen.

“As for the longer range, the GFS had my storm on the 12z run yesterday but back away from it today. However, it still has the big trough coming into the eastern part of the country. On the other hand, the Euro has a massive warm-up at the same time the GFS has it very cold. What a difference in models. Temp-wise, it’s about a 30-degree difference between the two models. While the NAO does not just yet support a big East Coast storm, I remain on the bandwagon that something will brew around midmonth based on historical patterns similar to what we are currently in. The SOI values remain down and that may be just enough to kick the blocking into gear. Also, the Euro cold wave always finds a way to make it into the eastern part of the country. That is, when it’s very cold in Europe it will eventually get cold over here. “

  25. I slightly disagree with BM’s post as for the dates (11-16) and say more like during school vacation week (19-25). I still believe that there will be cold & snowy times during March-early April as well. There will be very little if any wintry “activity” for the first half of this month.

  26. I’ll have my tech geeks check on the setup for the emoticons.

And yes that email is fine. The blog is going more public soon anyway when I am able to do admin more than a couple times a day. 🙂

    1. Oh no don’t worry about the emoticons. We all seem to use the basic ones. Don’t do any more work than you already do. Sorry 🙁

      1. No need to apologize. I’m just a multi-tasker. If you only knew how many things I just carried up 2 flights of stairs, outside…

Anyway very light “snizzle” falling on and off today, but not enough to do much except see little specks and droplets on the car window.

      1. If TK can’t add it here I can set one up. Itd be great fun. Have I told you I have a black thumb and have been known to kill silk flowers but I so want to learn. TK let me know. I can do a google blogger site easily. I have a couple of people on the other blog I do who are amazing gardeners and would be interested

  27. Hey TK, you mentioned “snizzle”. I remember Dr. Fred Ward years ago came up with that term. IIRC it is a combo of snowflakes and drizzle, correct?

Btw, is Dr. Fred still among the living? He seemed old even back 35-40 years ago when he was on Channel 7 just before Harvey came.

    1. Correct. It is a meaning for very light frozen precipitation i.e. fine snow and frozen drizzle:) BB uses that term quite frequently on BZ.

  28. Bogged down busy with school….conferences, grades etc. Was very interesting for an hour earlier today….first virga, then mist, then a heavy drizzle that increased to light rain that actually ended as a bit of wet snow. Very chilly, raw and damp, especially in contrast to yesterday.

    1. Yes I was caught off guard today. Good to hear from you buddy. I figured you had conferences as we had my sons last night. You must be getting pumped as we get closer.

      1. Yes, although kind of need more time right now to work on various topics, like fractions and decimals, before the students step away from it for a week.

            1. Oh…I think I get it now, I thought you were talking about school and you were talking about the Super Bowl……….I am kind of tired……..yes, I wish it were tomorrow, but then again, I think Gronk could use several more days. I read were Belichick simulated the long halftime show by practicing for an hour, then taking a 30 minute break in the locker room, gave them a halftime like speech, then went out for more practice. He is brilliant !

          1. I think they need a good fight to start the 3rd period to get things going, right off the face-off…lol

  29. John, I just visited today’s BZ blog and I noticed they took down BaileyMan’s post. Same thing that happened to WW’s post yesterday. I wonder why they’re doing that, and leaving all the posts that they should be deleting. Its crazy.

    1. Assuming the WW posts are just copied and pasted from another website, could be copyright reasons.
Same could be true for BM

      1. Good catch Scott. Could have sometjing to do with why both haven’t come here. It’s always seemed odd to me

    2. I was just about to post that here. And the blog I posted earlier and just now is in moderation, go figure. I don’t go over there at all but I am really trying to get him here. But to tell you the truth I can’t be bothered anymore. It would be great to have him here but my chase is done.

      1. No serious guys. I was hoping to get him here because we wanted him and WW here. But I’m done going over there sorry.

        1. Well if Scott’s on to something……

It’s easy enough to figure out. Just google part of their posts in quotes

            1. Well I went over there and got ticked so had to leave a little message for rob boy. I think being done is a wise decision

  30. WW’s post that was removed was “mysteriously” put back up…maybe BM’s will reappear tomorrow as well. We will see. In the meantime it might be best if we on this blog no longer post ANYTHING on the WBZ blog. We can just read the mets discussions and discuss their thoughts over here in our usual “civil” manner and let the trolls have their run of WBZ.

As for bringing over new bloggers…let TK and/or Coastal do it exclusively at their own discretion.

My final rant of the evening…good night all. 🙂

    1. Hi Philip – the only problem is that coastal has not been here so no one knows if he is checking his emails. As far as WW and BM, I’ve been thinking for a while that they have had plenty of opportunity to be here if they wanted.

Another thought on the posts on BZ disappearing and reappearing is that if someone hits “report a comment” or whatever the link says, the blog may be set to auto remove until it is reviewed. The trolls could simply be doing that.

  31. John/Vicki – WeatherWizard’s posts on the BZ blog are from Mike DeFino – he is a meterologist who posts daily at http://www.liveweatherblogs.com/
You can go there to read his posts if you are interested.

John – I wouldn’t bother with the BZ blog – pretty sure someone there is just using the WW name and cutting and pasting the posts.

      1. Yes, if you read the WW posts from WBZ and then go to Mike Defino’s blog on the website link I posted above, you will see that they are copied verbatim.

        1. I agree. I don’t think the real Mike D. has any idea his blogs are being posted there under WW.

The blogs almost always start with a thankyou to whoever wrote the WBZ blog (easy enough to do ahead of a paste). And have you ever noticed how “WW” never really responds to any questions or comments, even the troll bashes?

  32. I couldn’t help myself yesterday posting a remark back to something who said we were all nasty about summer weather. I asked them to show me a blog where any of us said we did not wish for nice weather in the summer.

  33. I agree with Philip…I think the more you guys post over there, the more it feeds the trolls and they just have a field day with it. They want you guys to post and respond so they can try to get you going. They have nothing better to do. Not worth your time or frustration!

    1. Again, I agree.

Though I must admit sometimes I have had a little fun with them on purpose. Though lately other than one fake post under the name I used there they have largely left me alone.

  34.
