Just catching up with yesterday’s (Thursday) Boston Herald and there are a number of Covid-19 related articles including an editorial from the paper itself strongly supporting lifting mask mandates from schools in particular.
There is also pressure from Boston restaurants for Mayor Wu to lift the vaccination mandate as their customers are taking their business to nearby suburbs where no mandates exist.
Who, Philip? In Massachusetts, the numbers of unvaccinated are quite small. It could be tourists from other states. But, I’m skeptical that a lot of folks are decamping to suburbs because of the mandate, especially when some of the suburbs have the same mandate.
Again, it’s a really weird thing that government mandates trigger such a response from people. Yet, private employer invasive searches (truly intrusive and infringing on privacy) are accepted as “normal.” I’m of course referring to the example I shared with you the other day. I find this so odd. I probably lived in Europe too long, as there it’s the private companies that laws protect people against. So, no invasive employer searches or requirements, no sales of private data permitted whatsoever, no robocalls, no unsolicited advertising on the phone, etc … Most people there are certainly willing to accept government-imposed vaccine mandates. But those same people would not accept the kinds of things that are considered “normal” here. I just spoke to two friends in Europe about the fact that a company here was demanding tax information (W-2s) from me to verify employment. As one of the persons said – and it’s what I felt, too – “that’s none of their business. Tax information is between you and the IRS.”

Feeling really uncomfortable about this interview, in which Dr. Monica Gandhi is bullied by Mehdi Hasan. See below. Yes, she has been wrong many times. She should be called out for it. I’ve done it myself, diplomatically, But, would Hasan do this kind of interview with say, Dr. Marty Makary, who’s been similarly wrong and never admits error (which Gandhi does)? No. Monica is a woman. Marty is a man. Mehdi is okay challenging and demeaning Monica, but would never do the same with Marty.
