Pieces Parts

9:37PM

I still hesitate to call this a storm, just because it comes in some many parts and pieces for this area. The advance first batch, caused mainly by warm air trying to move in from the southwest and riding up and over a bank of cold air pressing down from eastern Canada, is still with us, and will be in place for most of the night. But the snow will be varying in its intensity, and as warmer air starts to come in more above us, and milder surface air floods into coastal areas on an easterly wind, we’ll start to see some mixing with sleet and rain become a factor, especially within several miles of the shoreline and over far southern New England, as the night goes on, as well as into the day tomorrow.

What many are calling part 2 of the storm is a batch of showers and thunderstorms moving across Pennsylvania this evening, but that will mainly miss to the south. We do have to watch other showers and thunderstorms firing up to the north west and north of this region. The moisture from these may play a role in trying to redevelop precipitation in the belt over southern New England overnight and into Thursday. The final part of this long-duration event will come later on Thursday, as the upper level low pressure area crosses southern and central New England. This may produce some pockets of moderate to even briefly heavy snow, but it remains to be seen how widespread this will be and how much impact it will have.

Commutes…

Minimal impact with just wet roads along the coast and south of Boston for the Thursday morning commute. Minor to moderate impact further inland and especially higher elevations where a few periods of heavier snow could slick up roads.

The Thursday evening commute will also be impacted but again probably not in a widespread significant fashion. Though it will be colder and most areas that are precipitating are snowing, roads will have been treated and will likely be wet in most areas. Just periods of heavier snow showers may slick roads up anywhere in the region.

Friday morning commute should see no major impact unless some black ice has formed on untreated surfaces, especially walkways and driveways.

Remember that total snowfall accumulation can be deceiving in this type of event, as it is a prolonged event under marginal temperature conditions. Settling and melting takes place during the event. Example: An area that receives 6 inches of snow for the entire event will never have 6 inches on the ground.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

REMAINDER OF TONIGHT: Periods of snow, with sleet/rain along the coast, trying to push inland slightly, and also further south, trying to work north. Temperatures holding 30-35 most areas, coolest inland higher elevations, some upper 30s near the shore. Wind E increasing to 10-20 MPH.

THURSDAY: Periods of snow, except rain/mix to snow in areas to the south and east. High 35-40 early, then cooling back toward 30. Wind E-NE 10-20 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Snow ending. Mostly cloudy. Low 23-28. Watch for some icy spots. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

Total snow accumulation ranging from 1-3 inches coastal areas to 4-8 inches most inland areas, with some locally heavier amounts possible in a few higher elevations. (See above about snow-on-ground vs. accumulation forecast.)

FRIDAY: Cloudy. High 40-45. Wind NE 5-10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Cloudy. Rain showers likely. Low 38. High 54.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 34. High 46.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 27. High 41.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 30. High 46.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 39. High 56.

        1. When you add it all up through tomorrow evening, maybe somewhere in the 3-4 inch area, but as you saw, there may never be that much on the ground, as we melt and settle some during lulls in the storm. If the roads are ever impacted it would only be briefly during short-period heavier snow bursts especially Thursday.

  1. We’ve received about an inch, it’s funny u go just down the street u go up to around 400ft and there’s around an inch an a half, but not much accumulation on main roads, haven’t seen any plows down, just seen sanders to this point, have a great night 🙂

    1. Classic late winter / early Spring type of winter event.

Have a good one Charlie, thanks for your contributions!

    1. I can’t wait to see what the distribution of final snow looks like. I think it’s going to resemble a floor after somebody dropped their ice cream.

      1. Even while I was driving around earlier the varying intensity was amazing, light snowshowers to nearly an inch per hr snows

        1. I am below the Pike between 128/495, closer to the latter and NWS has us down for 4″-6″. I believe we got 1.5″ or 2″ this far and may see another inch or two in tommorrow’s action. I do not think they are too far off in my location.

The predictions around the immediate Boston area seem a bit high considering what everyone with eyes have been reporting.

    1. Just came in from the store and it’s raining in Brighton! NWS seems to think it’s going to get colder and snow heavier overnight.

  2. Boston received 0.9″ of snow yesterday moving us closer to the least snowfall record.

    1. 8.7″ = 2011-12*
    2. 9.0″ = 1936-37
    3.10.3″= 1972-73
    4.12.7″ = 1979-80
    5.14.9″ = 1994-95

TK, can we posibly sqeeze out 0.4″ additional snow today so we can end this once and for all?

  3. topkatt i think i just heard thunder . and its snowing but there is not that accumulation. roads look snow covered at least my street does and its not considered a back road.but boston road looks ok.
I have a bad feeling that i will have school.:(but here is my school closing probabilities
north of the pike outside of 495 % 60 to 70% chance of cancelation or delay
south of the pike 40 -50% chance of cancelation or delay
128 to 495 : 50% chance of chancelations or delay
areas inside 128 45% chancelations or delays
areas south and east of boston interior southeast mass 20 to 30%
coastal southeast mass to the cape and islands less than 20%
based on road conditions and what is inticipated to fall.

  4. Tom I saw your spring outlook on the previous blog and sure hope that happens. Would love a nice warm spring!!!

  5. Great job for calling the rain folks!! I was hoping that it would not be the case but can’t control that. Let’s see if we can change that rain to snow at some point today.

  6. TK any early thoughts for Burma? I looked at Mandalay and wow it looks hot, I am thinking 100-105? Bagan looks like upper 90’s? Anyway wait to hear what you think. Just trying to decide whether rain is an issue and if I need to take my malaria meds.

    Thanks

  7. Worcester report: There’s just under 6″ of perfect snowman/snowball snow in the driveway right now. Roads are white, which I’m surprised about considering how long the plows have had to keep up with this thing. Just had a moderate band of snow pass through, but according to radar it’s going to slow way down for a while now. 31 degrees. Good call on canceling schools out here!

  8. Sherborn was raining at 12:30AM and is currently a rain/snow/sleet mix.

School Delays/Cancellations as you move Northwest from here (all between 128/495):
    Sherborn – open
Ashland – 2 hour delay (below Mass Pike)
Southboro – closed (above Mass Pike)
Marlboro – closed (above Mass Pike)

  9. Good snow for making a snowman.
Boston now 0.3 inches away from tying the record for least snowiest on record. I said last week Boston would barely beat the least snowiest winter on record so hopefully there is an accumulation of 0.4 I don’t see any snow for a while once we get past this storm system.

  10. Very strange accumulation this morning. In Hanover and Rockland, we still had snow on the grassy surfaces. This accumulation went down the further north I went into Weymouth. There was nothing on the grass from Weymouth north to Dorchester. In Hanover/Rockland it was raining with a little bit of sleet mixed in. The further north I drove into Quincy Center there was much more sleet mixing in. By the time I arrived it in East Milton Square, very wet snow flakes were mixing in. The type that hit your windshield and exploded liked a rain drop. In Dorchester, the snow was a little more thicker, colder, and accounted for the majority of the precipitation that was falling. When can we expect the rain to complete change to snow? This afternoon? I am guessing a similar afternoon commute as yesterday. Snow in the air but no accumulations on the pavements.

  11. Can somone send me a link that has boston snow amounts for the winter that include dates?

    1. Coastal google Taunton NWS….on the left side of the site, they have a CLIMATE section, click LOCAL, it should default to Logan (Boston) and then pick Preliminary Monthly Climate Data, hit Archived Data, pick the month(s) you want and hit GO

  12. had 7″ this morning on my snow board that’s about 18″ off the ground (so no influence from warm surface)

    roads are pretty bad

my driveway had 4″ and I don’t know what’s on the lawn

TK,JMA, anyone know how “they” measure officially? On a board I imagine? off the ground? Do they swipe?

I suppose I could google it too.

  13. On wbz they have a poll that say is this will been a blessing?? Out of 500 votes 94% vote yes it was a blessing, another hint that people hate winter

  14. there must be a lot of low level moisture because there’s nothing on the radar here yet it’s still snowing enough to accumulate (lightly albeit)

  15. Hard to tell what’s here. WE had 2 inches around 10 when I cleaned the area but it is so heavy that I can’t tell what fell overnight. Judging from the amount of snow on the bushes I’d say another 1-2 with total somewhere between 3 and 4. Still snowing. Absolutely calm compared to the wind in Boston.

  16. Pouring rain in South Boston walking into office. Boy that wind was fierce right along the water.

    1. You have my sympathy Hadi. 🙁

I’d drive a cooler of snow to you if I felt like getting in the truck again.

      1. Thanks Retrac!! Dont worry about me, I am heading to Burma in a week so will bask in the sun 🙂

        1. Oh man, I’d trade the snow for that.

I’m really looking forward to Spring and it looks by the GFS it’s coming on/just after the 6th.

          Enjoy the trip!

  17. this is disapointing about 2 inches on the driveway
    3 inches in the yard
about 4 to 5 inches in the marsh
and the table has about 5 inches on it.
i expect light to periods of moderate snow then later this afternoon some heivier snows an addional 1-4 inches across most areas.
I am thinking wbz snow totals
1-3 coastal areas down through southeast mass
    cape less than 2 inches
areas south of the pike and the valleys 3-6 inches
    the hills and berks 6-12

    1. matt did your school cancel?? When I was watching cancellations this morning I was hoping one was yours 🙂

  18. just notice that a northeast wind is forming . When there is a north to northeast wind that forms usually means more snow for my back yard. I am also planning on opening my sleeding hill.

  19. 1. Since Boston’s First trace of snow for the season reported back on October 27th, Boston has recorded 22 days with a trace or greater. Since meteorological winter (December 1st) 18 Days and since the Winter Solstice, 17 days.

    2. 12 out of the 22 days Boston recorded only a trace of snow.

    3. 3 out of the 22 days Boston Recorded 1” or greater in a day.

    4. The largest one day total was 2.9” back on January 21st.

    5. The largest two day total was 4.4” recorded on January 20th and 21st.

    6. Boston was on pace for the least snowiest February on record until they received .9” yesterday. Which happened to be leap day. 

    7. Boston’s seasonal snowfall total to date is 8.7”. We are .3” from tying the all time least snowiest winter and .4” way from coming into 2nd place. We may get to second place later this afternoon when the rain changes to snow.

    8. If you are on salary, you worked for nothing yesterday. If you get paid hourly you received an extra days pay this year.

    1. Ha! Never thought of that. Now I don’t feel so bad about watching the weather and refreshing the radar all day yesterday at the office.

    2. It’s funny watching the plows and sanders trying to get the last little bit out of the winter budget, u should have seen a Congo line of plow trucks that were doing nothing but practically starting a fire on there plows from sparks, my wife was like what the hek r they doing, alot of company’s told there drivers to not bother plowing as it will be gone in a few hrs anyways, my friend was upset 🙂

  20. It is an amazing winter wonderland in Pelham, NH. I had about 7 inches at about 7:30 this morning. The roads were horrible on my trip to Manchester this morning where we have about the same amount. This was a bookend winter; I had almost a foot of snow in late October, we will end up close to a foot of snow in the beginning of March, and nothing in between.

  21. Looks like most of the lift generated will be to our north. This could be the end of snow accumulations south and east of 495.

  22. still snowing in methuen, has slowed down from this morning, but comes up and down in spurts. from what i heard earlier should ramp back up around 2ish?

    1. little to no additional snow accumulation for Woburn is expected. Precip is supposed to shut down everwhere late tonight. Most of the lift associated with this upper level low feature will remain north of the area.

        1. Unless you live north of the pike, it’s not likely that you will receive any additional accumulating snow as most of the lift will be confined to central and northern new england. In other words, storm is over for most of southern new england. I hope I am wrong.

  23. It appears that energy will mainly affect nh,vt,me, it appears what u have is it, I’ve gotten an inch maybe inch an a half and it’s half gone already. 🙂 and that’s your big bang to end winter hahaha 🙂

    1. Funny I figured the plow guys in my area would be over doing it since it’s been so slow but they were very hard to come by and many roads were not plowed at all. I assume it will commence during the day.

    2. As long as they (as in the city of Boston) leave the sander/salt trucks home! There’s enough salt on our city streets to keep the roads clear through at least the remainder of the winter, if not into next winter! Oh well, at least the street sweeper’s might get some over-time out out of it 🙂

      1. That’s awesome! I wish I could say the same. However, ground temps are marginal for much additional snow accumulation in Woburn.

        1. You are correct…I should have mentioned it’s not sticking. Does anyone see any potential snow events coming up or could this be the end?

  24. Charlie,
I know two guys that have snow removal companies that declared bankruptcy because of the lack of snow. They invested heavily in new equipment in late fall due to the reports of a quick start to winter as everyone predicted. They were running on a shoe string budget to begin with but simply could not make the payments. One was in business for 30 years. They both have three terrific children. Its very sad to see them all go through this.

I find your post mocking the plow drivers very offensive and when I think of the children involved, your comments infuriate me.

  25. what do others think about billerica ma for snow totals i see snow falling outside but not accumulation will that change. it is falling at a light to moderate past.but temps are ranging 32 to 34. Does anyone think i would get anymore accumulation
i am about 3 inches short of a winter storm criteria.
I see the main area of precipitation go north and west. would 1-3 be pushing it or would i get less than 1 inch.

    1. I would say 1-2 inches max. Ground temps still too warm and may be a little too late when it starts to accumulate. As I stated since last week, I was never really impressed with this storm. Too weak and too warm. Hope you get that 3 inches though:)

      1. And you are correct. The main lift will be confined north and west of your area. This is more of a central and northern new england event.

  26. Southern NH, VT and northern MA are getting robbed. They are stuck in a dry slot and that will result in lower snow totals for them too.

  27. 0-2 inches coastline and towards the south coast ,cape and islands
2-5 inches for areas in eastern mass away from the coast and the valeys.
5-10 for central and the berkshires. some areas up to or just over a foot in the berkshires are possible. snow should end around 3 to 4pm for eastern mass and south of the pike
    4-8 else where.

  28. wondering if those scattered showers in pennsylvania could regenerize and give us more snow or mixed precipitation

  29. Terry E from BZ talking about a 3rd burst this afternoon and tonight that should whiten the ground through SNE.

    1. Is this the same phase that alisonarod and TK mentioned above was going north (NH, VT, ME) and wouldn’t amount to anything down here?

    2. A coating of snow is not out of the question but anything more than that is not likely.

  30. My in laws in Central Maine just texted me that they are getting pounded with near zero visibility and heavy snow!! Of course they have to tell me that 🙂

  31. They are expecting close to if not more then 15 inches!! Temp is 18 degrees. What a difference 160 miles make.

  32. Been real busy the last couple of days.

    A couple of thoughts-

    1) Those people who called for a storm to have limited impact in coastal, urban, and valley locations were correct. Even in the Valley’s west of 495 it is a 3-5″ type storm, but much of that did not have a significant impact on paved surfaces.

    2) Those of you who live above 500ft had more significant snowfall, as predicted. Elevation was going to be a key player here and it was. Hard to be wrong with the 6-14″ spread the NWS went for in those areas….

    3) TV Mets who bit on the higher numbers are falling over themselves looking for ways for the snowfall amounts to verify.

    4) The NWS is killing themselves talking about the NAM as model of choice. Pretty sure the NAM 8-10″ in Boston did not verify. The GFS’s snowfall amounts and its temp profiles proved far more accurate.

    5) Watch the radar returns on a good extended base reflectivity radar. You will get a much better idea about the lack of intensity of the precip that is out there and all of the giant dry slots that are showing up. Much like the GFS modeled 72 hours ago and nothing like the NAM did.

  33. It has not stopped snowing here nearly the entire 24 hours since it began. It may not be much accumulation but it sure is pretty!

    1. Snowing for 24 hours and not really accumulating. That is the point I think TK and I tried to make a few days back. The model output was going to make for some awful forecasts. The west to east waves were not going to be intense enough, there was not going to be enough cold air, there was an easterly wind component which would work to create warm air intrusion due to warm SST’s and separately a valley shadow effect, March sun angle, all sorts of stuff that should have downplayed this in Urban, Coastal, and Valley locations. Instead the NAM was followed and a Winter Storm Warning was issued for Boston…

      1. Hard to believe isn’t it – and yes you were definitely making that point and it was on target!

  34. Lawrence down to 29F…think Boston and coastal MA could begin to fall towards 32F over the next couple of hours as some of the low 20s air sitting in coastal Maine gets brought down the coastline on backing winds.

      1. Cold dry air is working its way to the surface. It is not going to have a significant impact other than to continue to dry out overhead moisture.

          1. I agree with you on the coast but up until yesterday afternoon Pete had my area in the 1-3 inch range and we got about a foot. He had us on the border of 1-3 and 3-5. So some areas he got right others he didn’t.

        1. Completely agree since the temperature drop in Manchester the snow has stopped and the clouds are even breaking a little bit.

          1. :))) The worst part is as well as never knowing what my keyboard will end up typing (it has a mind of its own), you also never know what will come out of my mouth when in person! It’s a fun blog – TK does an exceptional job – I was honestly happy to see your name appear!

  35. I guess it is all in your location. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of snow. I will end up with a foot of snow just over the border in NH (Merrimack Valley). I believe I was on a coastal front, because we never went to rain and I believe 10 miles away in Lawrence they did for a while…

      1. Not true IMHO – he’s gotten the same ones wrong this winter that every other tv met has but he’s also nailed the big ones where there was a lot of criticism of him forecasting further ahead than some thought he should – and he was right every time.

        Yes, I am predictable………………what can I say.

And temp has dropped here from 37.7 at noon to 31.7 and snow is picking up and starting to accumulate on driveway again – not the road yet. We are on a small side road not heavily traveled.

      2. I think it’s unfair, inappropriate and frankly unprofessional to make disparaging comments about a meteorologist who seemed to have the best forecast for this weather event than most. IMHO, this makes you no better than the trolls. I have enjoyed this forum up until now. No need for rude, arrogant remarks.

        1. Unprofessional? I’m not a meteorologist. I’m a PA and I don’t see anything inappropriate about having an opinion. That’s what a blog is for. I can see where this is going but I do not like my character being questioned because I formed an opinion. So sorry I offended you. We will leave it at that. There is no room for this on this blog.

          1. And if you scroll above, you will see that I gave Pete credit for being correct on this storm;)

          2. Bingo! You aren’t a meteorologist. How would you like it if an unqualified lay-person publicly posted their disparaging opinion of care that you provided on a blog of your peers? You are correct, this blog is NOT for arguing, so set a precedent by not posting rude comments even of they are your opinion. Diplomacy goes a long way. Sorry if my calling you out on your mistake is upsetting. But let’s be fair here and not single out meteorologists by name and tear them apart. I saw your earlier comment, so no need to point it out.

            1. I have no comment and others here who know me do not portray me to be the monster you think I am, lol. But thank you for your advice and we will leave it at that:)

              1. Thank you John. I think you understand the kind of person I am. I do not feel that I am better than anybody else. Just was forming an opinion and yet, I still gave Pete B. credit for nailing this one. There are some people in life that will take things the wrong way and no matter what you say, you will not be able to get through to them. I think you and Vicki had a similar situation occur not too long ago. And like the both of you, I will just walk away gracefully. Thanks again.

              1. Thanks John, I guess we can all just agree to disagree. Irregardless, it was still rude to say that “Pete B can barely handle forecasting for Massachusetts let alone another state;)…” Remember, I am not the person who made that comment. If I am considered rude or a troll for coming to the defense of an honest professional, then so be it. This is NOT my first time here. I have been a member for a while, not feeling the need to comment until now… I’m happy with my reaction. At least it was honest.

                1. Couldn’t agree with you more John. It was quite a bold first comment but no hard feelings. Apparently, I rustled some feathers when I was trying to have a sense of humor. I guess I need to improve on that, lol. The funny thing, I actually love Pete. Thankfully, I stuck with medicine and never went into comedy.

                2. Not sure why came on so strong and I lope you are not the same Lisa Beth that posted this on the WBZ blog right after Todd posted his evening forecast last night ……

                  Lisa Beth

Sorry, but most of us have lost faith in your guesses/forecasts… Thanks for trying.

  36. Wow….1037 mb high in the mid-Atlantic strengthening to 1043 mb as it slides out underneath New England and starts a return SW flow middle of next week. 850 mb temps warming to 8-10C…..let’s hope that holds ! That would translate to a mild to warm day later next week.

  37. I think Pete did a decent job, but as with many forecasts there were misses. Just like bz and channel 5 missed with the Boston forecast.

    1. Just like we ALL have missed a million times. Some METS are better than others but whether you’re a bad MET or or novice like us, it is no knock to their character and that should be made clear. We all have varying opinions and there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that unless one is ruthless about it.

    2. Hadi – very nice! I always think he does a good job. People have favorite mets. Everyone knows that no met gets it all right – EVER. Everyone knows it bothers me that Pete seems to get the majority of the knocks here and the majority of the time it is not deserved. I think – especially with our common interest in weather – that it just isn’t right to target any of them. If I started to speak out against Barry or Harvey or some of the others, I know I’d have some breathing down my neck and rightfully so. BTW – I’d never criticize any of them simply because they are all just doing their best.

      1. Alisonarod – I want to be very clear that my comment was not directed at you in any way. I greatly admire you and remember well a short time ago that you were quick to speak up for both John and me. I am simply trying to explain why I react each time …… and sadly for everyone will continue to. I do have trouble keeping my mouth shut!

Lisa welcome and although I sort of agree with what you said, you said it by doing the very same thing you accused alisonarod of doing – name calling.

Nowwwwwwwwwwwwwww – it’s snowing and aren’t we supposed to all be SMILING!!!

        1. I know you weren’t directing that toward me and that it was just a general comment. And yes, I’m smiling big time that it’s snowing. Isn’t this what it’s all about? Thanks Vicki:)

      2. Ironically Vicki, Pete is one of my favorite METS. Why? Because he typically predicts more snow than we get. Most of what I like about pending storms is the anticipation and tracking of the storm. And that’s why Pete is one of my favs. He typically hypes up a storm and I love that. Mark Rosenthal for the same reason used to my absolute all time favorite MET. Again, I’m not knocking their character. And I would never ever be offended if someone formed an opinion about a weatherman that I really like. That is their opinion and there are other things in life that are far more important to be offended over (i.e. family and friends) than what one says or thinks of a meteorologist. Call me crazy but that is just my opinion.

        1. Dickey Albert did that too – he’s the one who got me hooked on weather – he got so excited he’d literally hop around the set. I loved it.

  38. Debating if I should rake my roof or let it melt away…not sure if by Saturday’s rain it will be gone.

    1. I was having the same debate. Well, I was debating whether my husband should 🙂 We have one spot where one addition joins another that leaked horribly last year. It is supposed to have been fixed but two other spots the roofer supposedly fixed are not.

Don’t you wish you’d invented and patented the roof rake?

      1. Funny I had the same issue last year with an addition, which prompted me to start using a roof rake (which I never did up until that point). Probably only a few inches on there now, but it’s heavy and tomorrow’s not looking overly sunny and warmer. However, yes, I wish I did invent the roof rake and could then pay other people to do it for me. 🙂 I hope you can coax him into getting that done!

        1. You are right, I know…it just runs contrary to my lazy nature…HAHA. I will get it done before the temps dive tonight and it turns into a solid sheet of ice and snow. 🙂

          1. mine too – oh, wait – I won’t be doing the work …… well, then, it should unquestionably be done tonight!

                1. Unfortunately he makes best brownies in world and is a tremendous cook. I’m good but not as good as he is. I’ll have a beer ready and a roaring fire 🙂

  39. That is the most annoying part of this storm. The little that we did get could reek havoc on our rooftops, sidewalks, and secondary roads. I wish you luck on your roof:)

    1. Thank you Hadi! Predicting, forecasting and anticipating is what makes these storms so much fun:)

    1. still no framingham but 1.6 in natick…..yikes we had more than that last night. It’s sticking on the road now and I can see down to the main road where it appears traffic is slowing somewhat.

There is somewhere between 3-5 inches on our deck I messed up my back last night so haven’t been wanting to go outside to measure but will have my husband when he’s raking the roof 🙂 🙂

  40. A lot of low-level moisture around is not being reflected by radar. For example, it’s snowing pretty good in Woonsocket but radar doesn’t demonstrate this.

  41. I think the tv mets understand what comes with the job. They develop thick skin. I don’t think its a bad thing to criticize ones forecast. I think if its done in a mature fashion it should be tolerated. Attacking a met or someone else on a personal level should not be excepted.

Lisa must be related to Pete. She’s very protective of Pete.

    1. Lol. Thanks coastal. I was actually just making a joke about Pete. Pete is actually one of my favorite METS. I wear my heart on my sleeve, so like I Vicki, sometimes things come out of my mouth that shouldn’t. This was NOT one of those times. However, I understand that words can be very deceiving and misconstrued.

      1. hahahahahaha – see my comment below – I was typing while you were – two peas in a pod I’d say 🙂

    2. I’m not related to Pete. Coastal, there is a fine line when it comes to making it personal. When I was a kid my mom would repeatedly use phrases I thought were outdated. I now find myself using them. One was that I tended to wear my heart on my sleeve………..I sure do that. Another was if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything.

Another was that when I got yakky (yes hard to believe I can be talkative), she’d call me Mrs. Hamburger. Darned if I ever figured out what that meant 🙂

And now that I’ve taken a trip down memory lane………….I just realized I dont remember seeing Old Salty today. I wonder if Jamaica Pond ever froze?

        1. even in Framingham the skating rink with a few inches of water froze only once for a couple of days in mid jan. At the moment the crows have been using it for a big bird bath

  42. Messy out here! Gonna be a rough commute. Moderate snow up most of 495 to Andover. Hopefully traffic will be lite.
    TJ

    1. It gets worse tonight when everything freezes over. Temps are expected to be in the teens and 20’s. Even the city of Boston will be in the 20’s so hopefully everyone returns to their homes safely before the freeze.

      1. alisonarod – do you know timing of freeze? Son’s shift ends at 11:00 – he has hospital duty this month so will be heading from either Mass General or Boston City to Cleveland Circle area. Is there a freeze expected right in the city??

        1. A freeze is expected right in the city and it’s gonna be awfully close come 11 pm. The wind has already become northeasterly and the cold air is filtering in which will help to dry up the left over snow that we have falling now. Your son will be ok as long as you give him a heads up to drive safely:)

          1. Thanks I wouldn’t have known to if you hadn’t mentioned it – I appreciate it – will txt him now

    1. That’s what worries me and the temp will continue to drop. Where are you from again Vicki if you don’t mind I ask?

          1. I have to say it is just beautiful here. Everything is white. Snow is flying. I am playing instrumental Christmas music again. It doesn’t get much better.

    1. Sticking to cars here in norther rhode island but not on roadways. Enjoying the flakes fly. Let’s hold onto this for as long as we can because this could be the last of it until next winter:(

  43. I don’t have a final # for Woburn yet because it’s still snowing a bit.

SO far it looks like the generality of my # spread was met somewhat, but I haven’t had a chance to really check all of it. I’m sitting for the first time in a very busy day. Just got in from shoveling a couple inches of slop off the driveway that I share with next door neighbors so it doesn’t freeze up too bad tonight.

@ JMA… Read your points above. Thanks for making those!

I could not put much faith in the NAM, nor the Euro, for this event. The GFS was closest. And here’s a little hint. The GFS called this storm 15 days in advance. Go figure. 🙂

  44. I think you’re right John. Although one last spoke of snow is rotating through and should last a few to several hours before it finally clears the coast:) An extra coating to an inch perhaps?

  45. I applaud the people who spoke up for alisonarod .Kwm that was a classic.good for you. I ask all of you to step up to the plate for your fellow bloggers when the the time arises. He was beyond awesome during this storm. I as you all know am not a huge fan of Pete, but that does not bother any of you. Remember that every here is of huge importance. For a New person to attack our Blogger is unacceptable and I won’t sit here and let it happen. So again we need to stick up for our own. I hope you all agree with my statement. Thank you.

    1. Thank you John. I definitely agree which is why I felt it necessary to be there for you and Vicki when needed. Life is good very good, so I won’t let one blogger bring me down:)

    2. John its always important to stand with your friends. I think a healthy discussion is a positive thing. It brings us closer in the long run. You can only learn about another by addressing the good and the not as good We saw that today it’s how you grow as a person

The one thought I had earlier is that if someone has an issue it might be better to have a channel to TK. I don’t mean Pete type comments.

        1. Hahahaha. You do it with style. I have to say I am very finding of everyone here and feel as if we really grew today. I absolutely get the biggest kick that both alisonarod and I said we wear our heart on our sleeves at the same time. I have not ever heard anyone but my mom say that and always about me.

            1. Oh god yeah. What I think comes out of my mouth. I need to be more filtered. Yet, most of the time, good things come out of my mouth fortunately.

              1. Im 63 and haven’t figured it out. I’ve decided I am what I am and I’m always honest. I’d rather hear honest tool.

    1. You did nothing. Just keep on forcasting. You may be onto something when you get out of the medical field. Lol.

  46. We are losing our grasp on the mid level lift. The cold air intrusion is drying things up above the surface. A couple more hours of some very light snow and this should do it:( It’s been fun trying to forecast these series of weak disturbances and gave everyone something to talk about.

  47. Moderate snow here in JP sticking to the side roads.

Retrac you called it yesterday how we were going to screwed and sure did!! Enjoy the snow!! A little more then what you thought which is great.

    1. I love when we get more snow than forecasted. Wish that was the case down in Stoughton.

  48. Same here 🙁 I read a report of 14 inches in NH but only 19 miles away from Newburyport. Just shows you how small of a distance makes all the difference in the world.

  49. So much for lifting north…like a blizzard out here and piling up faster than I can shovel!

    1. Moderate snow here too. Do you mind my asking what area you are in. I think you said earlier but can’t remember.

      1. I think he is in Woburn which isn’t far from the pike. As I said earlier, pike northward would fair the best. However, there are always a few isolated areas that do better than forecasted. Those are what you call surprises and I like surprises:)

  50. I haven’t seen any posts from Old Salty since Tuesday. He always posts during storms especially model runs. I hope he’s ok. Was he going to be away on vacation?

        1. We had that same thing two years ago. Turned out we all broke thru flu shot I know a ton who have it now. Take care alisonarod.

  51. Here in rain-ville, otherwise known as Marshfield, it’s still raining. With the wind still 030 degrees, we’re continuing to get too much of a component off the ocean. Boy, thank goodness for the low astronomical tides, the waves are huge !

    1. You were saying we needed it. LOL. and more for Saturday. Ch 5 is showing somthing on storm chasers.

      1. Yes, happy to see a good amt of precip. Looking forward to potential mid week warmth next week.

        1. me as well. I just want the warm weather now. We had all winter for this and now we should be looking forward to nice warm days.

    1. I was just thinking about that. I have been in back pain land all day and forgot. Anyone know what Boston officially got yesterday? My computer is shut down. I’ll post in morning. Shame on me 🙁

  52. I fixed that moderation Tk disregard. A troll on wbz going by the name sick of jerks is having a field day giving out this address.

    1. It’s fine. The address has actually been public since last year, when they had the contest.

There are securities in place to do their best to keep those that would not use this space properly from doing their thing here. I have my own personal geek squad working for me. 😉

      1. What section of Quincy do you live in. I lived in Wollaston for awhile on Newport ave, I park at the T there.

        1. I live in Wollaston, two blocks from the beach.

It’s 34.7 degrees here, and still raining. There were some wet snowflakes about an hour ago, but nothing has been sticking since yesterday afternoon…

I’m more of a spring, summer, fall person, so the warm snowless winter and the spring-like forecast is suiting me.

          1. Wow me as well. I enjoyed my time in Quincy. I’m there alot. I buy all my meat at Roxies. My dad just bought a town house at the falls.

  53. say day has gotten better got excepted to umass lowell. With snow still falling and at a good amount of time with moderate snows. roads are snow covered and icy

  54. Met a couple from Australia a few months ago who have been living in Boston about a year. They were looking forward to a snowy winter, as they enjoyed the novelty of last winter. They commented that the Bostonians they’ve met constantly complain about the weather, and then asked, “but then why don’t they don’t leave?!?”

    1. Because then we’d have to find something new to complain about….
I’m a teacher and a couple of years ago, I did a weather/e-mail project with a teacher in Canberra, who described his weather as “beautiful one day and perfect the next”. He was quite interested in our weather–actually, he’d probably enjoy this site.

    1. For real Hadi. So must be the same in Boston/downtown. You don’t mean snow covered do you.

  55. Last of the lift is pushing off the coast very soon:( Still may be left with some low level moisture until midnight.

  56. Oh yeah, weather–roads have snow on them in Milton–not too bad but it’s all accumulated in the last 2 hours. Before that, it was just wet. And, just by the way, yesterday, there was no snow accumulation in Milton, except oddly enough on my car. I had to go get my husband, and I cleaned off the car–and then I was driving around with the only snowy car in sight. Every other car was clean as a whistle, but there I was with caked on snow.

  57. People like to have things to complain about.

But lately I’ve found that just letting them voice it and enjoying what I enjoy is a much better route to take.

Blog is updated. Have a great night everyone. 🙂
