Cooler Air Coming

11:18PM

A cold front will cross southern New England overnight with scattered showers and thunderstorms as warm air in place begins to be pushed out of the way by cooler air advancing from the northwest. High pressure building north of the region later Wednesday through Thursday will eventually turn winds onshore and bring much cooler air into the region. This will continue into Friday, when another disturbance may bring some unsettled weather. The last of this disturbance will move offshore Saturday, and then we’ll enter a period of tranquil and warmer weather for the first few days of next week, as a large ridge of high pressure builds. We may be seeing some very warm air once again before too long, but the warmest of it may be delayed until the middle or end of next week.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

  2. I was driving around today with the windows down and the Eagles blasting. This evening I forgot to wear a jacket to the grocery store and I didn’t even feel chilly. Now I’m sitting in the office watching lightning in the distance. Forget winter, forget spring — summer is here!

    1. Well it probably approaches 60 in the area you’re going to be in by early afternoon but by late afternoon it falls really fast, so dress for Spring but bring a jacket!

  3. We missed the storms too……

Now this morning is the spring I know and, for a few days, would be happy to see…..

The wind is coming in off the ocean. Its foggy, there’s a bit of mist in the air and the temps are in the chilly low to mid 40s.

  4. We had a long period of lightning and heavy rain in Lunenburg. It started a little after 10 PM. After about an hour, either it abated or I just fell asleep. Then around midnight I heard and saw another strong wave.

  5. The radar lit up with activity in parts of SNE last night with approach of that front. It sure did not look like a radar you would see for this time of year.

  6. I wonder if the recent solar activity had anything to do with the blown transformer which caused the fire in Boston last night. There have been other scattered reports around the country the past few days of blown transformers and power outages.

    1. AceMaster – Great thought. I just called my husband who doesn’t think it would be the cause but he’s going to check with the engineers to see what they think. The oil is being tested to see what gases were present to cause the problem which could have been, among other things, overheating, arcing, corona

        1. That’s why they doing the dissolved gas tests – to see what gases were present to create the spark, etc.

  7. I apologize if this may seem out of line to some but I think it is worth while to mention here. Unfortunately I’m sure many of you have a similar stories about cancer. My friend is a breast cancer survivor of 3 1/2 years. Her situation is a bit different than most. She was diagnosed with cancer while she was pregnant. She endured the majority of her cancer treatments during her pregnancy with the hopes of this would not negatively effecting her unborn child. Thankfully she gave birth to a beautiful and healthy little girl. I’m sure some of you are familiar with relay for life which is a terrific cause. She he put a team in for the last seven years. She did this before her diagnosis, which is a testament to the type of women she is. Well if your not involved with this and would like to make a donation to the American Cancer Society, then please click the link below. Any donation amount is truly welcomed especially during these hard times. You can donate under your screen name on this blog so I can let her know where the donation came from. Sorry if this does not fall in line with the blog.

    1. Coastal – I have goosebumps up and down and all over thinking of your friend. Cancer is a horrible disease at any time but a woman should be able to enjoy her pregnancy. How sad on so many levels but how special that she is a survivor and has a lovely little girl. God Bless them both. I always donate to relay for life. My grandparents, paternal aunt, mother died from cancer. My brother died at the age of 43 from cancer. I’ll head over to donate now but just want to make sure I can donate in my brother’s name which is something I always do. Thanks

    2. it was not breast cancer but my grandmother past away from brain cancer.
4 years ago,my grandmother went out to california to go and seemy aunt that now lives in billerica since her husband past away since he commited suicide. MY grandmother then came back . We were sleeping over at her house. I kind of relized that something was wrong when she closed the pool in late august and saying that she did not want to keep it open since she loved the pool. I started to noticed that she was starting to forget things that is everyday things. then i asked if she was okay. Everyone was saying she was fine and she said it her self.
then in december we relized that she did not come over on the weekend mornings and she got tired and started not to answer the phone. My uncle went down and my parents went down. My mom is a nurse and asked questions and she did not get it. On the 23 she was dignosed with brain cancer. She had the surgery that evening . She for got my Dads name and others. Sadly they could not get all of the tumer out . they said that she was probably not going to make it past 2 months if she did not take theropy and even with theropy she probably would not last more than 6 months. They decided not to give her the theropy 🙁 and she past away 2 day of spring . Her favorite season. We are now living in her house and renivated the living room and porch next is the patio and deck then parents room and my room.

      1. I’m sorry for your loss matt. I’m sure she would be happy knowing you’re living in her house 🙂 It amazes me how many people are directly and indirectly affected by cancer. I work in the biotech and healthcare industry and I can honestly say that even with the recent advances in therapies we are no closer to a solution. We can only hope to slow it down.

    3. coastal, no need to be sorry about this not having to do with weather. This is far more important than weather! I would be more than glad to donate. I lost my dad 4 years ago and my grandfather 6 years ago, both to cancer. I make regular donations to a few organizations and have led the relay for life at my college and in my hometown. Best of luck to you and your friend.

  8. If it’s one thing I know about NE weather, it’s that we will pay for this abnormally warm run at some point this Spring.

  9. I said I would not post until October, but I figured I would give you a report from up north. I did not go to Quebec as I originally planned, but did visit my daughter at the Appalachian Mountain Club Highland Center. I started my trek northward on Friday. Driving through Franconia Notch was tremendous. They had just received about 6 inches of snow. All the trees were covered, temperature was in the 20s, and it appeared the notch was in mid winter mode. Saturday at Bretton Woods more of the same. Another inch or so had fallen overnight. Temperature was still in the 20s during the day, single digits at night. I hiked Sunday morning about 5 miles up and down some of the hills and mountains near the AMC Highland Center. The morning was still in the teens, but it warmed up gradually to the low 40s by late afternoon. Serious (very fast) melting occurred Monday and Tuesday with temperatures reaching the mid 50s in the valley. Sunday night did still get down to 20, which made for a nice morning hike on Monday. Mountain peaks were in the upper 30s and 40s, with a sizable, but quickly eroding base of snow. I could see that yesterday it was snowing lightly on Mount Washington, and more is expected tonight (not much, though). Ski resorts are now in a lot of trouble (story of this winter for the most part) as the base is eroding, almost no snow remains at the bottom of the slopes, and whatever snow there is is mostly slush. In addition, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s they cannot make snow, which they normally would be able to in mid March. I do not see that changing, though a glimmer of hope remains for a colder end of March.

    1. Hi Joshua – great to hear from you – sounds as if you are having a wonderful time. It’s a spectacular area. Enjoy and I’m very happy you didn’t wait until fall 🙂

  10. Looks like they mulched and planted all new flowers here at McDonald’s, spring is here! Hope everyone’s having a great day 🙂

    1. We never saw the sun either Scott….don’t think it got much above 45F….to be honest though, I liked a day of this weather. This is March, along the coast, in New England.

  11. Today actually felt, looked and smelled like snow here in Boston anyway for the first time in awhile. Very glad I decided not to put my winter coat in the dry cleaners this week. I am still feeling that something “wintry” will happen very late month into early April in spite of 80+ temps next week.

I also noticed today that the AO and NAO trends negative very end of the month assuming I read them correctly. We will see if those signs repeat themselves tomorrow and the coming days.

    TK & others…your thoughts?

    1. for the end of march cool. but i do not want that to continue through out spring and summer

    2. I completely disagree respectably, winter is over and it will not snow again until next Dec, have a great day

    3. Many times in the last six months, the extended outlook of the NAO has shown some hints of neutral or -NAO. As we know, that has really never arrived……At some point though, neutral or -NAO will return. So, could it be the time this case…sure, but based on persistence, I’m guessing it won’t be.

  12. TK, I noticed that the next 7 days in Chicago are forecasted to be in the low to upper 70’s. Will we see that same weather next week? Sure hope so 🙂

  13. The strange pattern of 2012 continues…….overnight, strong thunderstorms in the eastern Great Lakes…….almost looks like they are firing on the eastern side of the ridge, much like occurs with regularity in the heart of summer.
