Monday April 24 2023 Forecast (7:22AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 24-28)

Upper level low pressure moves from the Great Lakes into the Northeast early this week and will take until later in the week to exit the region. Surface low pressure, albeit weak, is close enough to keep us mainly cloudy today with more of a cloud/sun mix for the days following this. An exception may be Thursday when an additional disturbance arriving to join the upper low may turn it cloudier than the two days that flank it. We’ll see about that. Rainfall will be limited, with just some areas of showers associated with the nearby surface low today, and maybe a patch of drizzle especially near the coast. After this, mostly isolated to scattered showers occur daily, a few of them potentially producing frozen precipitation if heavy enough, due to the cold air aloft associated with the upper level low.

TODAY: Mainly cloudy. Episodes of showers possible. Patchy coastal drizzle. Highs 50-57, coolest coastal NH & eastern MA. Wind N to variable up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. A shower possible early.Lows 43-50. Wind variable to NW up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered afternoon showers that can be mixed with graupel. Highs 51-58. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Chance of a shower early. Lows 42-49. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of a shower, mainly during the afternoon. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Slight chance of a shower early. Lows 38-45. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of a few showers and a touch of drizzle. Highs 50-57, coolest coast. Wind variable up to 10 MPH becoming E.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of a shower early. Lows 40-47. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 55-62. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 29 – MAY 3)

Low confidence forecast. Optimistic about high pressure keeping it dry for most of the April 29-30 weekend but not as sure about the second day. Unsettled with low pressure in the region May 1-2 with drier weather following. Temperatures near to below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 4-8)

Still some hints of a quieter period of weather evolving here with a relaxing of the trough and a bit more westerly flow and high pressure dominance, but this also continues to be a low confidence forecast.

  1. Thanks TK.

I guess β€œfull sunshine” will be put on hold until further notice. Even partial sunshine will be difficult, at best to come by this week. πŸ™

    1. TUESDAY: Partly sunny.
      WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny.
      FRIDAY: Sun/cloud mix.

Partial sunshine will NOT be difficult to come by this week for the most part.

  2. 60.6 (Monday) to 61.9 (Friday) degree max sun angle at solar noon this week, while it reaches highs in the 50s most of the week.

    You know how I feel about this. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  3. Planning a trip to Plymouth, New Hampshire next weekend and wondered if you had any weather ideas. I know it’s early. Thanks.

Its about getting rid of the snow and ice in Canada, unlocking warmer weather for our summer.

Productive snow/ice melt day in eastern Canada ongoing.

IR Satellite shows dark ground or relatively mild air east of Hudson Bay and Visible Satellite shows initial openings on the ice in James Bay and near the eastern shoreline of Hudson Bay.

    Melt !!!!!!!!!

    1. Gonna be wicked slow. That may be a factor in cooler than normal late spring and early summer temps.

    1. That’s all gone.

This is just dry air working into the low sitting over the region. πŸ™‚

  5. Partly sunny and 59F.

The weather this week in Boston reminds me of a typical weather pattern in spring, summer, and fall across Northwestern Europe. The sun definitely comes out periodically. Often lots of cumulus clouds. Thicker clouds can then roll in. A passing shower or some light rain. Then some partial clearing. Rinse and repeat. Generally breezy, though not always. Never warm, but also not cold.

      1. Rarely, especially from mid October through late March. The farther east you go in Northwestern Europe, so, say, Northern Germany and the Eastern parts of the Netherlands, the greater the chances you’ll have of some cloudless days in late fall, winter, and early spring.

Northwestern Europe can experience periods of cloudless days when the Scandinavian high – or better still, high pressure above Scotland – serve to block Atlantic lows from making their usual trek across the British Isles and into and through the Low Countries. The wind direction shifts to an (north)easterly, which for them is dry and continental. What’s noticeable is that these areas of high pressure – especially the ones in Scandinavia – can be more or less stationary for 10-14 days at a time. In winter this translates to series of cold and cloudless days. In summer, this translates to series of warm and cloudless days.

But, the prevailing wind – and I mean dominant, as in 75%-80% of the time – is a westerly. The westerlies come over the ocean first, then some land, and then the North Sea. The westerlies can transport areas of low pressure, but also lots of in-between weather, like we’re having here now.

  7. I must say, it was MUCH MUCH nicer this afternoon than
I ever expected. Made it to 57, sure below average, but with the sunshine, it didn’t feel bad at all. πŸ™‚

    1. Same here. I figured more clouds more of the time. Dry air was a bit of a winner in many areas. πŸ™‚

Upper low patterns can be a pain in the butt to forecast though. They can bring nastybad weather and very nice weather, sometimes alternately.

  8. TK said: “Upper low patterns can be a pain in the butt to forecast though. They can bring nasty bad weather and very nice weather, sometimes alternately.”

That’s in line with what I wrote regarding the typical weather in Northwestern Europe. You can have some pretty nice days with no rain, even though you’re in a more or less constant upper low pattern. What’s also characteristic are the days in which you get different types of weather on a given day: Some light rain for a bit, then sun and clouds, maybe a passing shower, and then clearing skies.

By the way, this weather type is very prevalent (almost daily occurrence) across Southern Iceland and Scotland. The seasonal differences in temperature and weather patterns are muted. You know what season it is by the light, but often not by the weather.

  9. Interesting evening of clouds.

At one point, there were instability cumulus clouds in the northwest part of the sky, moving northeastward.

There was low clouds and a fog deck in the eastern third of the sky, moving westward.

Now, there’s areas of fog swirling around, but then you drive into an area that has none.

    1. Fascinating. Thanks, Tom. It has been a wonderful sky watching day

Hail/rain/graupel in Manchester NH today. With rain ultimately forming a rainbow.
