Wednesday April 26 2023 Forecast (7:17AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 26-30)

Upper level low pressure will continue its influence on our weather for 2 more days. We start today with marine layer stratus in place across most of the WHW forecast area – though with some holes in the cloud cover especially in the western reaches of the region around the Connecticut Valley. I do expect this cloud cover to erode further as the sun climbs into the sky, for at least a partly sunny resolution, if not mostly sunny for a while, but the same sun that gave the heating to break up the stratus will provide heat that ignites cumulus clouds development, and with another disturbance approaching as it rotates around the upper low, this can help give rise to a few showers in the region later. I do think today’s shower activity will turn out a little less potent and with less coverage than yesterday’s did. With some easterly component to the wind this afternoon and especially through Thursday, the tendency for marine layer stratus to move onshore will be there, extending inland at times as well. I do think the shower threat will be lower on Thursday, though, but there can be a patch of drizzle here and there with more moisture from the ocean in the lowest levels of the atmosphere. Finally, as the upper low pulls away and a weak area of high pressure moves in, we should see more substantial clearing for Friday, although sun’s heating will likely still help to pop some diurnal cumulus clouds, preventing 100% sun. Still, Friday seems to be the pick of the week. And then the weekend dilemma: Guidance in the medium range has been kind of on the same page about unsettled weather returning, but then during yesterday’s runs became more in agreement about a pair of low pressure areas impacting the region as we head through the last couple days of April (and May 1), with the first of them arriving on Saturday (April 29). At that point we will have a ridge of high pressure having been over the region on Friday, and still some blocking in the atmosphere. Sometimes the guidance does not resolve this blocking strongly enough, and even though we do have some agreement in the guidance, as of this update I am going to bank on the aforementioned error being part of a model tendency to bring the initial low in too quickly, so I am going to forecast dry daylight hours Saturday, with increasing clouds as the initial low starts to weaken while running into high pressure, with some of its lingering rain reaching the region during Saturday night, and the second low actually being faster and becoming the one main system, bringing wet weather into the region during Sunday. This is not a super-high confidence forecast, obviously, but my initial guess for the end of the 5-day, and subject to adjustment over the next few updates. Just plan on an unsettled weekend, but one that may start out “ok”.

TODAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Chance of a shower later in the day. Highs 52-59, coolest coast. Wind N-NE up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Chance of a shower. Lows 42-49. Wind NE-E up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of a shower early. Patchy drizzle possible, especially in coastal areas. Highs 50-57, coolest coast. Wind E-SE up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Decreasing clouds. Lows 40-47. Wind variable to N up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 55-62. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 36-43. Wind NE under 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Sun followed by clouds. Highs 53-60. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT / SUNDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain. Areas of fog. Temperatures generally 45-52. Wind E-SE 5-15 MPH inland, 10-20 MPH coast, higher gusts possible at times.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 1-5)

Going against model trends of two separate low pressure areas, with the second one impacting the region on May 1, for a forecast that shows improvement that day as a singular storm system from the day before departs, but upper level low pressure is again set to linger in the region for a good portion if not throughout this period with near to below normal temperatures and occasional shower chances.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 6-10)

General idea remains that the Northeast will see a trough of low pressure in place with a trend for it to slide eastward with time, keeping it cooler than normal overall and with limited and decreasing shower chances over time.

      1. Celtics are whistling in the dark if you will. Hopefully the Bruins take care of business tonight.

      2. Hmmm, “could” it have anything to do with GAMBLING?
I am in the camp of games are thrown all the time.

        1. I’d never thought of it in those terms.

If that’s the case, people should be permanently expelled from leagues if caught.

        2. I do not follow these games, but I’ve wondered the same in the past about some others. I seem to recall Mrs OS has too and we often think alike based on your comments.

          How is Mrs OS?

  1. Vicki, my mother had a cousin who lived in Belmont on Pleasant St. off of Trapelo Rd. I believe you come from Belmont? Were you from that area of Belmont?

      1. We lived in six houses in Belmont. But four were in that area. My grandfather and his brother owned a huge part of Belmont and built many of the homes in the Cushing square area. The houses they built for themselves were also in that are

We went to a dentist who was a friend of my parents. He was in his home on Trapelo rd just past Cushing Sq headed toward waverley sq. I can’t recall his name but would probably know it if I heard it

        1. His name was Dr. Herbert Daitch and I believe his home and office was brown. I believe there was a gas station nearby. He had a daughter a bit older than us and her name was Barbra.

  2. Ви благодарам, TK. [Macedonian – not an official EU language, I believe, but I’m including it in this month and next month’s thank you notes to TK]

  3. Vicki, the Ramen noodle brand in the link you sent yesterday is indeed correct.

Jean, in case you missed it, I responded to your query about what kind of Ramen noodles I get in Chinatown.

    1. Awesome. I like some spice but am not a fan of extra hot. My son and his wife, however, would really enjoy this. Thank you.

    1. Me, too, usually. Not this April, however. We’ve had some really nice stretches of weather, and even this week has shaped up better than expected. When I saw the TV forecasts over the weekend it looked really dismal all week. One met said we’d only see glimpses of the sun on Wednesday. Then I read what SAK wrote, I believe on Sunday night, about there definitely being some periods of sun throughout the week. Well, it’s turned out that way so far. TK had also hinted at this in forecasts a few days ago.

    2. When a team is in total control and then all of a sudden just lose focus and then the game, one HAS to WONDER. I know there are those here who firmly believe the games are on the up and up. I for one, do not share that opinion.

      1. Awesome news for your wife.

On the other, I learned to listen to my spidy senses long ago and there have been times it’s popped up with sports

  4. I hadn’t been out in awhile but we went out for me to get an echocardiogram and I noticed how so many trees were in full color. I think the rain (though it was a moderate amount) but still enough to wake up everything. In Sudbury there isn’t as much color as we have more pine trees. And I notice the birds singing very early. Not sure what kind of bird( I think it is a robin) but it starts singing around 4 a.m. Our cat sure notices it and she is right at the window looking out.

  5. I’m at a dr appointment in wellesley. The building is up against the Charles River. The river sure is running.

  6. Today, the Sox lost another Al East series: This time to the Orioles in sunny Baltimore (a day game). This season’s fortunes for the Sox will depend on how they fare against the AL East. They play almost half their games against AL East opponents. Last year, they were miserable against the AL East. This year – granted it’s a small sample size – they’re 3 and 7. Not good. And I’m having trouble believing this will improve. The Sox just don’t match up well against the other teams in their division (who are all better). I hope I’m wrong.

    1. They’re right where I expected – and they’ll be bouncing around .500 all season. Not a playoff team, but better than “media expectation”.

      1. My guess is you knew I’d laugh out loud reading that. Media expectation is somewhere around what a team of four year olds would be capable of. Thanks. Needed a hardy laugh tonight

  7. WOW! Looking at the Euro, the weather through 5/6 at least , looks ABYSMAL!!!!! Just BRUTAL!!!!

    1. I hope this doesn’t turn into one of those Springs that doesn’t break until the 4th of July!! I am getting DEPRESSED!
      GIMMIE A BREAK!!

      1. Well at least we saw it coming in the longer range. 🙂

I still lean toward a cooler than normal summer.

  8. Afternoon check-in!

    Brother update…
Continues to work in rehab, but he will be shifting to another facility in 2 days to do some more work while we work on finding a more permanent living space for him. Generally positive but a lot of work lies ahead with finding the new living space then clearing out and selling his house.

    Weather thoughts…
Nothing much to add to what I wrote in the discussion. I’m going to continues to buck the models’ ideas of earlier onset of rain on Saturday, and we’ll see if model updates start to show this or if they start to show that I’m simply out to lunch on this anticipated model error. 😉

    1. I’m hoping for continued improvement in your brother’s situation. It sounds difficult. Best wishes to you, your brother, and your family.

    2. Thank you for an update for your brother. That is very positive for sure. And excellent that he will move to a facility to do more target work with him. I’m thinking of you as you work to find a place where your brother can thrive but also be safe. ❤️

      1. A lot to do but keeping focus on the trend being positive. 🙂

Hopefully my next update can have additional good news in it. 🙂

  9. TK, I concur with your assessment of the Sox. It would be nice if they could compete for a playoff spot, but I recognize that’s unlikely.

I just like the sport a lot. My grown-up children think I’m an old fart (I am) when it comes to my passionate interest in baseball. On the positive side, they think it’s quaint and charming. I think the rule changes may help bring them and other younger people back into it a bit. Who knows.

  10. I’m glad there are no more Wednesday games scheduled in the series with Florida. Can’t beat that team on a Wednesday. 😛

    Regular season & playoffs…
Bruins are 0-3 against Florida on Wednesdays and 4-1 on all other days combined (the 1 other loss coming on a Saturday).

      1. 4-1 on Fridays. The only loss was a regular season loss to the Arizona Coyotes in December (Friday 12-9-22).
