Saturday May 20 2023 Forecast (7:39AM)

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 20-24)

A kind-of-split weekend. We don’t lose all of our Saturday to wet weather. Most of our morning is dry, though by later this morning some showers can certainly be occurring in the South Coast region. The bulk of the shower activity outside of one tongue of moisture moving across the region this afternoon will occur tonight with the passage of a cold front, when some heavier downpours can occur and there is even the risk of some thunder. However, as is sometimes the case, this cold front will not be followed by immediate cooling, and Sunday, while carrying a fair amount of clouds at times, will be a fairly mild day with a drying downsloping westerly wind. Cooler air does arrive by Monday with more of a broad scale onshore flow developing with high pressure to our north. This high settles across the region with a more tranquil Tuesday. When we get to Wednesday, I’ve completely abandoned the notion of any moisture sneaking up from low pressure to the south, and most of the day will be dry as it looks now, but a cold front will approach from the northwest and may bring showers before that day is over – of course dependent on timing which is far from highly certain out that many days.

TODAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers likely Cape Cod region midday into afternoon with isolated to scattered showers possible anywhere else. Highs 61-68, coolest South Coast. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Showers likely. Slight chance of thunder. Areas of fog. Lows 52-59. Wind variable to SW up to 10 MPH, shifting to W.

SUNDAY: Lots of clouds at times, some sun at others. Chance of a shower early in the day favoring eastern coastal areas and especially Cape Cod. Highs 68-75. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 42-49. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 60-67, coolest eastern coastal areas. Wind N shifting to E 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 45-52. Wind calm.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 62-69, coolest coastal areas. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 43-50. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Increasing clouds. Late day showers possible. Highs 64-71. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 25-29)

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather from the middle of the week right into and through the entire Memorial Day Weekend with temperatures starting out seasonable to slightly cooler than normal then moderating to above normal. Moderately confident that upper level low pressure down the Atlantic Coast stays there but will obviously monitor. We’ve seen fair weather outlooks this far in advance turn around on us before and in weather, that kind of history can repeat itself.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 30 – JUNE 3)

Looking for a trough and some unsettled weather potential to end May, and a return to fair weather and a seasonable weather pattern to begin June.

  1. My thoughts on fan loyalty….

I see it differently. I believe a team has to earn fan loyalty.
And for a number of different reasons, some of our teams
do not deserve the fan loyalty.

If a Team is going through a tough time, but are well coached and management has done all they can, they fans should remain loyal. However, when they are either not well coached (Patriots last year or mismanaged (current Red Sox) then they do not deserve the fan loyalty.

Just m,y take. Call me a fair weather fan is you must, but I don;t see it that way.

    1. I left mine on yesterday’s but found this. Seems we are right on topic for a weather blog.

Fair Weather or Bandwagon Fans. Fans who support the winning team, instead of supporting the same team year after year. Diehard Fans. Fans who follow their team no matter if they are winning or losing.

Where did the term fair weather fan come from? Origin of Fair Weather Fan

From fair-weather + fan , drawing an analogy between good weather and trouble-free times .

      1. Interesting part of that is there is a definite pattern even on this blog between outlook regarding weather and outlook regarding sports teams.

  2. Thanks TK. Rain amounts still seem uncertain close to the event. How much do you see falling in the metro west area. As you noted, seems bulk of weather hits later night. Maybe concert goers miss the heavy stuff?

    1. I’m certainly not TK but the tv mets show widespread 1”+ amounts regionwide.

    1. Technically, not before my time but I was just a toddler that year. JPD probably remembers it like it was yesterday. πŸ˜‰

      1. Sorry, I really don’t remember. I remember another day we were under a tornado watch, but only tornado was out
        by Schenectady, NY.

    2. Thank you, JJ. I enjoy your β€œon this date” posts. I was 13 so am a bit surprised that I don’t remember this

  3. Thanks TK and Happy Birthday!!! Would have said it sooner but I was asleep (was up late last night)

    1. Thank you Jules! πŸ˜€

You’re still up pretty early for West Coast time!!

You know it’s a good birthday when before 9:00 a.m. you have already been wished happy birthday by the drummer of the Go-Go’s and the daughter of Doug and Emmy Jo from the children’s TV show New Zoo Revue. πŸ˜‰

    1. The late Joe Cocker, Dan Wilson from Semisonic (who I am listening to right now), Jane Weidlin from the Go-Go’s, and Susan Cowsill. πŸ™‚

  4. Happy birthday TK!! And thanks as always for the blog πŸ™‚

I do believe the Celtics will end up beating the Heat, but they’ll have to take game 3 to do it. I think they will…

I flew into Denver early this morning, a few friends and I will be storm chasing through the upcoming holiday weekend. Looks like we’ll be doing more sightseeing than storm chasing the next few days, but maybe some better prospects lurking late in the week.

The air quality here (Denver) is atrocious. Thankfully for you all in SNE your smoke issues have been high altitude, but that is definitely not the case here. The Canadian wildfires are still raging as much as ever. The end is finally in sight with major, desperately needed weather relief on the way by early this week.

    1. Thank you!
      You’re welcome!
      I hope so!
      Enjoy!
      Good news!

I bet you can match all those up to what they go to. πŸ™‚

  5. TK, Curious as to how you knew the Go Gos drummer?

    And was it:

    Elisa Bello
    OR
    Gina Schock?

    1. Gina. I follow her on social media but she’s very interactive with the fans. And she posted a birthday wish for Jane which I replied to saying happy birthday as well and stating that we share a birthday, which prompted her to then send me a wish as well. πŸ™‚

  6. And as if on cue the GFS in a single run goes from 3 dry, warming days to destroying the Memorial Day Weekend with wet weather. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA

      1. I always keep an eye out for such things at this time of year, but FWIW I think that run is a p.o.s. πŸ™‚

          1. MURPHY’S LAW!!! 😈

It evidently applies to certain 3-day concerts as well. 😈

  7. According to some models, there may be some breaks in the rain during the big concert tonight at Gillette. Let’s hope so.
It won’t exactly be a warm rain.

  8. We’re getting a let up in the rain down here by the northern tip of Buzzard’s Bay.

I know it’s a Saturday, but the campground has been fairly dry most of the spring, very dusty on the dirt roads.

We’ve made the most of it by driving through other campgrounds taking down notes on our favorite sites. The campground right on the canal between the 2 bridges, very close to the Bourne Bridge, we were very impressed by that one.

  9. Sad news. Martin Amis, a transformative British author, has died at 73. He was a brilliant essayist. He and Christopher Hitchens were best friends. Both men died of esophageal cancer.

  10. It is a perfect day to be a pajama day. I’m watching one of the star war movies with grandkids. When Mac and I saw the first star wars in the theatre 46 years ago this month, I don’t think we imagined for a second that it would be around long enough for our grandkids to be fans. Both are waving their light sabers as we watch and wearing mandalorian helmets.

    1. My brother took me to Star Wars when it came out, and Rocky, too. I remember him telling me – about both movies – “your kids and your grandkids will be watching these movies.” We went to the Sack Cheri theater on Dalton Street in Boston.

It is a pajama day. I’ve been doing a major spring clean-up. Among other things, I cleaned practically all my woolen items and will put them in storage once they’re dry. I’ve also thrown out a ton of stuff, which for me isn’t easy given my hoarding tendencies and nostalgia.

      1. I also remember seeing rocky with Mac. Special memories.

I am not good at tossing memories either so understand.

        1. Thanks for the memories Joshua. I spent many a day at the Sack Cheri, even up until its final days. πŸ™‚

  11. 12z ECMWF has joined the low pressure party for the holiday weekend. πŸ˜‰

      1. I wouldn’t worry. It had no ensemble support.

And now the 00z GFS doesn’t bring that low up from the south. Instead it brings an upper low down from Canada, completely opposite. The inconsistency on that model is over the top. In short, the model continues to be a complete piece of shit and nothing to be proud of. They really need to go back to the drawing board because clearly the upgrade is a complete failure. It’s more than obvious now. How many months is it going to be allowed to embarrass the developers? Disgraceful. Yup. I said it. And I meant it. πŸ™‚ The truth can be brutal at times but it is what it is. πŸ˜‰

      1. I’ll have to ask my oldest what birthday but she asked to have dinner in Boston and then go to a movie. We went to that theatre. Tons of fun. We went as a family several times after that also

    1. Sounds right. My gauge is now up to 0.81 for the entire event. It’s raining fairly steadily right now.
