Back To Unsettled

9:01PM

We had our sunny day, well mostly sunny, as the sun did fade out before setting. Those clouds were ahead of a warm front which will passing by overnight and early Tuesday morning, sending some light rain across northern MA and southern NH. Most of the forecast area will be cloudy but rain-free for most of the daylight hours of Tuesday, other than the early light rain to the north and some late-day showers approaching the 495 belt and parts of south central NH. The cold front responsible for these showers will settle across the area from west to east and barely make it off the coast by early Wednesday. It’s possible that we get some partial clearing on Wednesday as one batch of showers moves offshore. If this happens, it may become quite warm for a time on Wednesday.  By Wednesday night and Thursday, a low pressure wave on the front may send a batch of rainfall into eastern sections (RI, far eastern MA, and southeastern NH). This will drag cooler air down from the north during Thursday, which should turn out much cooler than Wednesday.

Late this week, upper level low pressure may linger over the area Friday into Saturday, so don’t expect perfectly sunny days, but instead we’ll see pop-up clouds and possible showers as it will be unstable. Maybe by Sunday we can finally break out into a very nice day, just in time for Mother’s Day. I am cautiously optimistic about this day.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of light rain north of the Mass Pike after midnight. Low 48-53. Wind shifting from E to S up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy to partly sunny. Showers lingering mainly southeast of Boston early. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. High 68-73 except cooler in south-facing coastal areas. Wind S-SW 10-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain/drizzle. Low 50. High 59.

  1. Matt Noyes just showed his outlook for next week. He has southern new england in above normal temps and in the below normal precip area.

  2. GFS to me is indicating a decent stretch of weather coming up by no means perfect but much better than the EURO.

    1. One of them is going to be wrong. This is where practical meteorology comes into good use. 🙂

      1. I would lay my bets down on the EURO being correct but more likely is a compromise between the 2.

  3. Todd’s summer “forecast.”
La Nina Over + More Blocking = Cooler and Wetter.

Didn’t really give the type of info I was looking for.

  4. Longshot most everyone had winters forecast wrong so maybe the same can be said for summer!!

It better be nice this summer is all I can say:) I have a month long sabbatical from mid July through mid August and my wife has 3 months off.

    1. Longshot didn’t have it wrong – he had 3 inches for snow!!! However, you are very right about everyone else 🙂

  5. There’s a solid shield of precip out there just to our north. Not moving south just yet.

  6. Rain will become steady after 2pm, I expect around a half inch of rain with the 1st batch, the 2nd batch affects mainly south of Boston

    1. I don’t see it until another week, really. NAO is still negative for at least another week as well. I’m still sticking to the week of the 21st for some consistantly drier and warmer air. All i’m hoping for is that this blocking pattern thats been around for 3 weeks doesnt set back up in June. Something tells me it will. 🙁

  7. The Euro is looking very warm next week which makes sense as the NAO is heading back to neutral.

  8. I want Memorial Day weekend to be nice & warm so I can fire up the BBQ for the first one of the season. My hope is that the NAO is positive by then. 🙂

  9. The comment about a cooler and wet summer might happen since the Farmers’ Almanac is predicting a hot and dry summer and it always seems the opposite happens what they predict.

  10. the thunderstorm activity if any will likly form across interior locations around the mass pike

  11. No rain yet! Looking at the radar, eastern CT, RI and SE MA seem to be under an “umbrella,” keeping the rain away for now. Keep that rain away till 7pm and ill be happy 🙂

  12. Just looking at the EURO 850 mb temps and…as a whole, they are generally mild heading towards warm long term. So, while the surface can certainly provide cool winds from the ocean, I don’t think there are any real chilly days in the offing the next several days after today. I hope 🙂

    1. I’ve said before I dont mind the rain so much. It’s the 52 and raw, IN MAY, that I cant take.

      1. I hear you. We are living the charmed life today south of Boston. Not a drop of rain. In fact, on occasion, it brightens and the sun peaks out thru a break in the clouds.

        1. No rain here either. A few drops are just starting to come down. I was outside on the deck with the dog. It’s quite windy and the air felt nice…………early spring-ish – even smells like spring.

      2. For me it really doesn’t seem raw at all, although I’m south with not much rain, but I gotta be honest I don’t mind the mid 50’s just don’t rain 🙂

        1. It was kind of fun standing out in the wind and light rain. Just don’t tell my husband. He will make me take the dog out later

  13. I feel popular today.
45 views on my weather blog today…
    invited to 11 graduation parties.
Even though this week did not start out so good it is turning. 11 more days and counting until no more classes 🙂

  14. Say goodbye to the drought 🙂 alot of us esp Boston to Providence south and east where 1-2 inches of rain will fall. After Thursdays event I est around 5-6 inches of rain will have fallen in the last 3-4 weeks 🙂

    1. Boston’s deficit is still around 6 inches. But it will come down somewhat.

  15. water levels have risen up a few inches. water temp is 46 degrees air temp down in the marsh right now is currently 48 degrees. up at the house temps up in the yard is 55.
Times of light rain and drizzle have been effecting me here.

  16. Tonight Todd on BZ said T-storms here and there (spotty) for the next 2 afternoons.

  17. I am only giving those thunderstorm chances a 1 on the 1-4 thunderstorm index since I think if they do develop I don’t see any of them becoming severe.

    1. Pete has daily thunderstorms for much of next week. Be sure to dust off your thunderstorm scale there Jimmy! Keep us informed of any severe activity.

I hope Pete is dead wrong…but he didn’t miss a forecast all last winter and he is still standing tall (in more ways than one). 😉

  18. The latest 14-day CPC outlook has us back to above normal temps…but also above normal precip.

Warm & wet…a mixed blessing. My bet is daily thunderstorms for the rest of the month? Pete’s forecast could come to fruition if the CPC verfies. 🙂 🙁

    I suppose it beats cold & wet…but still. 🙁

  19. I think you see those chances for thunderstorms early next week because the humidity might build just a bit creating some instablity.
