Wednesday March 13 2024 Forecast (7:16AM)

DAYS 1-5 (MARCH 13-17)

A small area of high pressure brings fair weather today with light wind. This will result in coastal areas being cooler than inland as light sea breezes develop. A batch of clouds and a few scattered rain showers will move across the region from west to east tonight in association with a warm front. This sets up the warmest day of 2024 so far for many areas Thursday, but again coastal areas will be noticeably cooler due to onshore winds. A cold front will sag southward through the region Thursday night and bring rain showers into the region, along with a cooler air mass by Friday morning. Friday itself will be a cool and damp day with low pressure moving along the frontal boundary, passing just to our south, with wet weather. The outlook for the weekend is dry and cool Saturday with lots of clouds and breaks of sun as a little drier air works in behind Friday’s unsettled weather system. Sunday looks milder but mainly cloudy as we get a warm front / cold front combo coming through. It will be the cold front that produces most of the wet weather, in the form of rain showers Sunday afternoon, along with a gusty south to southwest wind. This air flow will keep the South Coast cooler.

TODAY: Sun followed by clouds. Highs 46-53 coast, 53-60 inland. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes developing.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with a passing rain shower possible evening. Partly cloudy overnight. Lows 33-40. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 55-62 coast, 63-70 inland. Wind SW to SE up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy evening. Mostly cloudy with passing rain showers overnight. Lows 42-49. Wind shifting to N up to 10 MPH, a few higher gusts.

FRIDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain, especially midday on. Temperatures steady 42-49, may even fall slowly during the afternoon. Wind N up to 10 MPH shifting to E.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of rain in the evening. Lows 35-42. Wind E up to 10 MPH shifting to N.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Highs 42-49. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Patchy drizzle. Areas of fog, especially South Coast. Lows 35-42 evening, rising slowly overnight. Wind variable up to 10 MPH, then S increasing to 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Rain showers likely during the afternoon. Highs 48-55 South Coast, 55-62 elsewhere. Wind S to SW 10-20 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (MARCH 18-22)

Windy, colder, sprinkles of rain possibly mixed with snowflakes March 18 as low pressure intensifies in Atlantic Canada while high pressure approaches. High pressure brings dry weather with below to near normal temperatures during the middle of next week to welcome spring (vernal equinox 11:06 p.m. March 19). Unsettled weather may arrive before next week is over.

DAYS 11-15 (MARCH 23-27)

A colder pattern with high pressure to the north and a series of low pressure areas passing nearby or just to the south, bringing the chance of unsettled weather which may include some frozen precipitation late month.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK
    35 here this morning.
Curious to see how much the sea breeze caps our high temp today at my location. I hope to make it to about 52. If sea breeze is strong enough may not reach 50 or if it does it will fall back.

  2. Down to 29 last night. Up to 46 as of 10:30. We had 10-12 inches of snow 40 years ago today.

Happy birthfsy to tjammer and a 40th to my son ❤️

  3. Thanks TK.

VERY much looking forward to that “frozen precipitation” later this month. I still have my shovel and ice melt at the ready! ❄️ 🙂

    1. Despite what i may have been barking, my snow shovel and ice melt is beside my front porch at the ready. I don’t put it away until about May 15th. 🙂 I Know better!

      1. We have several bunnies in our neighborhood and I used to see their little foot prints all the time. 🙂

        1. We have yet to see our one eared bunny that I named Peter. He’s been here three summers so I hope he returns. We had baby bunnies under our deck last spring. They eat any flowers we plant so I’m planning to have a gnome garden this year.

          1. There is a spray that works really well I can look in my shop when I get home & let you know . It’s safe to use but I am warning you it’s an absolutely gross smell .

            1. Thank you. I think my daughter used one at some point but it kept getting washed off when it rained. I’d sure appreciate if you send the name along. We planted Dalia bulbs along the side of the garage last year and they ate every one of them as they broke through the ground.

    2. We’ll see about frozen precipitation. Time will tell.
I am NOT counting on it. If it comes, it comes. I’ll deal with it.

Other than ice fishing, I’ve only gone fishing once in my life with
snow on the ground. Didn’t catch anything, although I did see a school of yellow perch. 🙂

Now, at my age, I am not going near the edge of the river with snow on the ground. I’d be sure to slide in.

      1. We still have the ice ladders by our ponds and lakes. I like that they do that out here. I don’t recall seeing this growing up closer to Boston

  4. Thanks TK.

We are leaving for JFK is about 45 minutes and will be in Lake Tahoe tomorrow thru Sunday AM. Obviously they have tons of snow and it is forecast to be sunny the next three days with temps in the 50s by Saturday. However, the Sierras are now under a High Wind Warning from tonight thru tomorrow PM with ridge line wind gusts up to 100mph. Unfortunately this is going to close a lot of upper mountain lifts tomorrow but hopefully the lower mountain lifts stay unaffected and we will still have plenty to keep us occupied. I’ll check in from there. Have a good rest of the week everybody!

  5. Bees are out. That’s very early. Unprecedented? No. I saw them in 2012 in mid March, too.

Nice spring day outside, but the March light is blinding. It’s the lack of foliage that does it.

I applied for a job at the university in Quebec City (not joking). My chances of getting it are minimal, in part because my French isn’t that good. But if I do at least I’ll be guaranteed of a winter.

  6. I’m sorry to see this. I had mentioned on here a while back that hardiness zones have been updated due to our warming climate.

My families gravesite is at Mount Auburn. I suspect many here have visited. If not, it is worth the trip. Mount Auburn Cemetery was founded in 1831 by Harvard botanist Jacob Bigelow and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and was the first rural/garden cemetery in the US. The white columned mausoleum in the header photo is Mary Baker Eddy’s gravesite. She is one of many well known folks who rest there

    1. I put some ornamental grass in last year & rabbits were eating one of them & my nursery that I do buisness with told me to use this . I would wear gloves just so it does not get on hands as you will be gagging spraying this on , but it works & very easy to do if you follow the simple instructions.

    2. Thank you. My daughter said she used something in Mac’s garden last year and it didn’t work. I will order this. Much appreciated

  7. Timing may be a little faster on the late week systems. Doesn’t impact the forecast too much anyway. But the wet weather may be more weighted toward Friday morning instead of “all day”, and the Sunday showers may be earlier rather than later. But I’m not convinced of this – just trend watching at this point.

Impressive, but not unexpected, temperature contrasts today. As of 4 p.m., Boston is 44 while Fitchburg is 62.

  8. Vicki, SSK, the Quebec City job is just in the application phase. No interviews scheduled yet and frankly I doubt I’ll get to that stage. I have very little chance of landing it. My age, lack of sufficient language skill (French) and being foreign (not knowing a thing about the Canadian healthcare system) will all play a role. But it’s worth a shot.

    1. Thanks Joshua. I did have that sense. But then I always believe you don’t get anything unless you try. Best of luck.
