Friday April 5 2024 Forecast (7:21AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 5-9)

We will remain on the westerly side of the circulation of the low pressure area that brought us the midweek storm today through the weekend, but the impact on our region will be a little different each day, from scattered rain/snow showers today to a more widespread swath of rain showers Saturday to just lingering clouds and maybe a passing sprinkle of rain on Sunday. Just in time for a solar eclipse on Monday, high pressure builds in with sunshine and milder air. A weak cold front will slip down from the north Tuesday, pushed by an eastern Canadian high pressure area, and this will send slightly cooler weather into the region at that time. We’ll also see some high clouds spilling into the region post-eclipse on Monday and especially Monday night and Tuesday as low pressure moves through the Midwest and Great Lakes.

TODAY: Mostly cloudy. Occasional light snow/rain showers. Highs 40-47. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Occasional light snow showers, may dust the ground in a few locations. Lows 31-38. Wind WNW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. More widespread snow or rain showers early then rain showers. Highs 41-48. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Diminishing rain showers evening. Lows 33-40. Wind NNW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Chance of a passing rain shower. Highs 45-52. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Lows 33-40. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Solar eclipse begins 2:16 p.m., maximum coverage (92-95% southeast to northwest across the WHW forecast area) at 3:29 p.m., ends at 4:39 p.m. Highs 54-61 (you may note a slight temperature drop for about 1/2 hour either side of the eclipse maximum). Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 35-42. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 51-58. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 10-14)

Early to mid period unsettled weather as a low pressure trough moves through. Late period improvement as high pressure builds back in. Temperatures near to above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 15-19)

Fair weather may start the period (Patriots Day / Boston Marathon April 15). Mid period unsettled weather chances are higher. Late period fair weather should return. But getting out in the double-digit days ahead this can’t be a high confidence outlook when that much change is involved, so check back as this outlook is fine-tuned.

    1. Even happens during the partial when the coverage is great enough. I felt it during the annual eclipse I witnessed in Hooksett NH on 5/10/1994. Dimmed the day, birds quieted down, it got slightly cooler. I am going to be in the path of totality this time, where the effect will be magnified many times.

  1. This is just my opinion.

Everyone has a right to say what they want and I am not trying to determine what folks can post about.

    With that said ….

The Wankum posts are out of control.

From how often he is mentioned to now, how we are noting if we think he is making mistakes.

Mike is great, but so is everyone else and I feel like we are posting about him disproportionately to all the other Mets.

There’s a happy medium in there somewhere.

Anyhow, maybe I’m wrong, but now I’ve written out what has been building in my head the last day or two on the matter.

    1. You are correct. It’s time to get back to talking about the weather. ๐Ÿ™‚

Any mets can be referenced. But I try to do it in an informational way. And saying you disagree with someone is not the same as trashing them. I don’t agree with my colleagues about as much as they don’t agree with each other, but that’s just a result of the application of the science.

I had a very different forecast on this system for northern New England than one of my colleagues. I respected the process, but didn’t agree with it. They went 18-30 for snowfall for most of NNE, I had 4-8 for the far southern areas and basically 8-15 wtih spot higher amounts across the balance of the region. We were not even close to agreeing. ๐Ÿ™‚

    2. Just saw this Tom. Well said and I absolutely agree. I have always liked Mike. And always will. Mac and I watched him nightly for a very long time. Because I have favorites does not take from that.

My issue also and equally is with putting other Mets down when discussing Mike. I doubt anyone here knows I have a serious issue with any meteorologists being criticized. To me that part of the earlier discussions was as bothersome.

  2. In case it was missed yesterday, Boston DID get measurable frozen precipitation. 0.1 inch yesterday.

Their snow total for the season has indeed changed. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Pleasantly surprised to see the sunshine this morning! I ended up with 2.45โ€ of QPF in the gauge from the storm.

  4. Thanks TK.

Vicki, great news on the babies!

Hadi, sorry to hear of your mother-in-lawโ€™s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family,

  5. Good morning and thank you TK.

We have had some sunshine here this morning. Very nice.
Was SNOWING around 5:45 AM. Was 35 earlier, not up to 39.

Vicki, excellent news on the babies!

Hadi, My deepest sympathies on the passing of your MIL.

  6. Hadi, so sorry about your milโ€™s passing. Based on what you have told us, she is in a better place.

  7. Thanks SAK, TK on the corrected 0.1 amount for Logan. Itโ€™s still at #3 for LEAST seasonal snowfall though. ๐Ÿ™

    1. 1936-37 = 9.0โ€
    2. 2011-12 = 9.3โ€
    3. 2023-24 = 9.8โ€ (Final most likely)
    4. 1972-73 = 10.3โ€

      1. This was absolutely the worst one I have ever felt.
It was close to the one in the DC area several years ago.

        1. I remember that one. We were at Humarock and in a house raised so thought the house was somehow shifting.

    1. The same thing happened here. I first heard some creaking in our old house and thought it was the wind. But when I looked out, there was hardly a breeze. Then it went for a while, as you said.

  8. Thank you TK and so sorry about your MIL Hadi.

;re the Earthquake, I have heard from several people back in Coventry who felt it. I am at the office here in Manchester though and didnt notice anything.

  9. I thought I was losing my mind !!

The projection on my board was shaking for a good 10 seconds.

I was on a prep period, sitting at my desk.

I’m thinking, my projection hasn’t shaken like this before.

    I didn’t think earthquake.

      1. Definitely felt it good in this area SSK. It felt like someone was pushing the back of my reclining chair to make it shake. Not gonna lie, I thought it was a ghost for a minute since I am the only one home. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Nope, you weren’t
Absolutely MY FIRST THOUGHT was it was an EARTH QUAKE!!! I was about to take cover!!!!
My chair and my desk were ROCKING and SWAYING!!
I real eerie feeling for sure!!! For a moment I thought the house
      was coming down!

This house is nearly 200 years old!!!

      1. Thanks SSK and JpDave !

Certainly glad it wasn’t any worse and hope everyone is ok down by the epicenter.

      2. Our house is old and bouncy too. The basement is from 1728 and the upper part around 1800.

A guy doing some work here said that the reason these houses last so long is exactly that flexibility!

        1. Interesting. Thanks.

Mine was built in 1846 so Not as old as yours.
In the basement, I don’t have 2 by 4s for beams, they
          are 12×12!!!!

        2. I have always dreamed of living in an antique home. Just imagine the stories those walls could tell.

  10. What floor are you on, Tom?

I did not know until I got the breaking news alert on my phone.

    1. 2nd floor.

I didn’t feel shaking, but the shaking or swaying of the image from the projector was nuts.

      1. When we were in Humarock during the Dc quake, I was in a chair and my daughter and SIL weee standing by an open slider looking over the ocean. I felt it. They did not. When my SIL sat in the chair I was in, he could feel it.

  11. Some additional info on Earth Quake

The earthquake took place on the Ramapo fault line, and the shaking was felt very far away because the rock in the area is older and denser.

  12. It’s a pity the earthquake didn’t hold out until the eclipse. That would have definitely sent a stronger message concerning the imminent end of the world. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Some Snow Totals from up North:

    Mad River 18-21″
    Stowe 21″
    Killington 25″
    Jay Peak 30″

Mt Mansfield Snow Stake Depth is now at 90″ or 7.5 feet.

  14. We are on rock covered with sand. All of neighborhood hime have radon detectors. Maybe that why we didnโ€™t feel anything.

  15. I know Massachusetts gave permission for schools to have an early release Monday without penalty. Uxbridge SC chose not to release. I donโ€™t know what Sutton is doing. Any other schools releasing or not?

I just picked up eclipse glasses at our library

      1. I know our school’s sporting events have been moved to 5 pm Monday. The Yankees moved Monday’s Opening Day at Yankee Stadium from 2 to 5 pm this morning.

  16. Another eclipse question. One daughter asked how effective I feel the eclipse glasses are. Itโ€™s a great question that I do not have an answer to.

Is everyone here comfortable with their effectiveness?? And if you have a reason, Iโ€™d sure appreciate it

    1. Vicki, I read that you have fake or ineffective solar eclipse glasses if, when you put them on inside, you can see the walls, furniture, etc. of the room you’re in.

I also read that you should try them on outside on a “non-eclipse” day and look at the sun. The sun should look like a white dot. If it does, you should be okay.

  17. Colorado State University (CSU) 2024 Hurricane Forecast.
(Not sure this will post correctly)

Forecast Parameters 2024 Forecast Average 1991-2020

    Named Storms 23 14.4
    Named Storm Days 115 69.4
    Hurricanes 11 7.2
    Hurricane Days 45 27.0
    Major Hurricanes 5 3.2
    Major Hurricane Days 13 7.4

    1. Did not post well. Soooooo…the 1st number next to each category is the CSU prediction and the 2nd number is the 1991-2020 average.

11 hurricanes versus an average of 7.2 seems like a lot. Not saying it hasn’t happened in the past and won’t happen this year, but just a lot.

  18. The CSU prediction is for the Atlantic Basin. if you read their hurricane forecast in full, it is very detailed and technical.

Tropical Storm Risk, a UK site I follow, will present a prediction on Monday. NOAA usually waits until May.

All the sites talking about La Nina and warm Atlantic waters.

  19. On a yesterdayโ€™s storm note. I drove to Sutton center to get eclipse glasses. It is like a different world only those few miles away. Here in SE sutton we have grass with maybe a tiny patch of snow here and there. Toward the schools and the center, there is a solid snow cover. That area is 6.2 miles NNW of here.

  20. In all of the earthquake craziness I completely neglected to say thank you TK….so THANK YOU!

  21. 4 for 4 (NAM, GDPS, GFS, ECMWF) on favorable sky conditions for eclipse viewing on Monday.

  22. Opening Day at Fenway looks very nice, but it may end up quite chilly as the afternoon goes on with a north wind shifting to east thanks to Canadian high pressure!

FYI: Opening Day is Tuesday April 9.

  23. On a non weather note. Again. Iโ€™ll try to make it my last but am all over the place waiting to discover babiesโ€™ genders and names.

Has anyone watched manifest on Netflix?

Iโ€™m in desperate need of a new one after suits and a friend recommended. Just started and seems interesting

    1. yes,
It’s interesting. but steange kind of out thete. . hold on if you watch it. I generally liked it.

      1. Thank you. I found it written Down too and suspect it may have been cause you told me about it Although I usually put JPD next to your recommendations.

My youngest and her husband just said they watched a few seasons. He liked it. She thought it was too intense.

  24. The 5-2 Red Sox open a series with the 4-2 Angels tonight. Games are 9:30 tonight & Saturday, 4:00 Sunday.

Wonder who will come out on top in this 3-game battle. Go Sox!

  25. It was south of where the 4.8 earthquake happened earlier. That was a strong aftershock. I just heard so far 11 aftershocks.

    1. Wow. It is REALLY well done. I originally was thinking that as clever as it is, it isnโ€™t music id typically care for. But by the end I was dancing around the room.

      1. It’s a great rock song. ๐Ÿ™‚
Having known the lead singer personally, I might be a bit biased. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        1. That is so cool. And since it is not typically my music style and I loved it says a ton for the talent too

          1. I still think their song “More Than A Feeling” features one of the greatest vocal performances of all time as far as rock music goes. ๐Ÿ™‚

            1. You lose me on most as after 80s music wasnโ€™t much my focus but not on this one ๐Ÿ™‚

I closed my eyes and slipped awayโ€ฆ..

Mid 70s? Will be humming the rest of the night. Love love that song

  26. FINAL
    Red Sox 8
    Angels 6

    Hit 5 HR’s.
    5th straight win.
    6-2 after 8 games.

I’m so glad the media was reminding everybody of how bad this team is. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Yeah, I know, it’s a long season, but enjoy what is. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Great to see the good start.

I’m a fan of the team, win or lose, though I can be critical of their (non) moves. We’ll see how the season unfolds. I’ll be very happy to be wrong about my prediction that they’re a last place team that doesn’t make the playoffs.

  27. Just a few hundred miles east of me it’s been relatively warm and sunny for a while – even summer-like – but not here. The week has features of lot of mid to upper 50s (which is better than Boston, I imagine). Comparatively balmy today (70F), though, as Storm Kathleen drags in milder air from the south, but as it sweeps over the Channel more clouds form. It’s overcast as it’s been most of the time (yesterday we got lucky and saw a stretch of 3 consecutive hours of sun or partial sun). Luckily most of Southern England is being spared of Kathleen’s wrath as the storm makes a north-northeasterly run over the Irish Sea and up towards Scotland. We’ve certainly experienced some wind gusts here, but nothing out of the ordinary.

    1. “This Scottish Lass” as my friend Amanda labels herself at times, was talking about a significant quantity of rain ongoing, and finally having warmed up after what she describes as nearly endless cold since the start of winter.
