Wet Wednesday, Then Clearer Sailing

3:11AM

Low pressure will bring periods of rain to southern New England today. High pressure will build down from the northΒ  Thursday through the coming weekend, with mainly dry weather but a lack of summer heat as the air will be coming from the Maritimes of Canada and also modified at times by the nearby Atlantic waters.

    1. I cut mine on Sunday. For the first time this year it looked a little yellow after I cut it (actually the green wasn’t as deep). Today’s rain should help that.

Taking Friday off and it looks like a great day coming up.

      1. I have not cut my lawn in 2 weeks. Been way to busy lately and it took me twice as long. I had to empty my grass catcher 4 times!

        1. My husband didn’t cut ours last weekend but it was also not as deep green so I didn’t mind. Wish we’d gotten fertilizer down though

  1. I think a repeat performance of a surge of warmth north of New England is coming again this weekend. Ontario, eventually into Labrador and Newfoundland likely to be hot, while the maritimes keep our region’s temps more modified.

Per Taunton NWS, one year ago yesterday, it was 58F/53F in Boston. For the summer season, Boston ended up with 13 (90F + days)…plenty of 80F + days…and one day of 103F.

    1. It is a repeat of the same pattern, almost identical setup, during the coming week.

    2. Thanks TK.
I remember that day back on July 22nd of last year. Hartford, CT that day recorded the highest ever temperature.
After today a nice weather stretch with comfortable temperatures and the humidity in check with those lows in the 50s the
      air will be dry.

      1. I remember as well – July 22 is my daughter’s bday – clearly my memories all circle around birthdays etc πŸ™‚

  2. School’s out πŸ™‚

Was just curious about last summer at Logan: so looking back per Taunton NWS climate data…

June 2011 : featured 10 days with highs of 80F or higher and 1 day of 90F or higher
July 2011 : featured 12 days with highs of 80F or higher and 10 days of 90F or higher
August 2011 : featured 16 days with highs of 80F or higher and 2 days of 90F or higher

Summed together for the 92 days of meteorological summer, last year featured :

38 days of 80F or higher
13 days of 90F or higher

which is approximately 55% of meteorological summer with afternoon highs of 80F or warmer.

It does appear that Logan may not have its first 80F day this June thru perhaps June 17th, at least…and thus, it probably is accurate to say that in comparison, this early meteorological summer is off to a cooler start as compared to last year.

  3. There were places near the 80 degree mark at 7AM on that day and when you start there the temperature could really sore if you get full sunshine and it did just that.
Read an article yesterday on AccuWeather about El Nino. If you are a snowlover don’t root for a strong El Nino like in 97-98. The last time we had El Nino was a Modeate on in 09-10 and the Mid Atlantic got clobbered with snowfall and we missed a lot of those storms.

    1. I remember it well also. It was 90+ by 9am and the early morning dewpts were in the mid-upper 70s. As I recall, the humidity dropped a good deal during the afternoon……as hot as that day was, the night of July 22-23 was somewhat bearable for sleeping (we were camping). But the night of July 21 leading into the 22nd was unbearable as we’re a couple nights after July 22nd, when the high humidity returned even though the actual high temps dropped.

  4. Hey Tom…13 days of 90+ is just about average. I actually thought we had a lot more than that last summer. Thanks for the stats!

Also, I believe Boston Public Schools last day is June 20th…the last day of spring. πŸ™‚

        1. I dont mind it either. But I don’t mind not having it. Kind of like last winter. As much as I would have loved a lot of snow it was so different that in itself made it fun.

        2. I am hoping for some triple h weather soon – at some point, anyway. Last weekend was a gem, true, but it wouldn’t be summer to me without some heat and humidity. I know there’s none in the immediate future, but I would like to see some of it by the end of the month.

          1. This rain we are having is good for the gardens and such – but frankly, it belongs in the fall – not summer! Bring on the real summer! πŸ™‚

    1. I believe I read something today on FB posted by wrisk that indicates that most of the winter will be in the negative nao of -3 or lower.

        1. I believe it got that low in the 09-10 winter when the Mid Atlantic get clobbered with snow. I remember hearing back then the NAO was too negative which was the reason the storms were not coming up the coast.
