The Dries Have It

8:50AM (original post) / 12:20PM (update for afternoon sky condition)

The next 7 days have the potential to be rain-free anywhere and possibly everywhere in southern New England. This would be accomplished by way of a northwesterly flow above us behind a trough of low pressure in eastern Canada for the first half of the week and a building ridge of high pressure later in the week. These are the things that can threaten the dry forecast: 1) A weak disturbance south of the region early Tuesday, which would likely produce clouds for a time but possibly a touch of light shower activity in far southern New England. 2) A sea breeze boundary Wednesday and/or Thursday which could ignite a few afternoon showers somewhere back from the immediate coast. 3) An area of moisture to the south late in the week (around Friday) if it came further north than expected. As for humidity, today into the middle of the week will feature low humidity and lack of significant heat. This may change at the end of the week. For now, the dry scenario forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH looks like this (with an update coming tonight).

THIS AFTERNOON: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs in the middle to upper 80s, cooler some coastal points. Wind NW-N 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows ranging from the upper 50s to lower 60s but some middle 60s in urban centers. Wind NW under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 83-88. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: AM clouds, PM sun. Low 66. High 84.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Low 63. High 75 coast to 83 inland.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Low 64. High 75 coast to 83 inland.

FRIDAY: AM clouds, PM sun. Low 65. High 87.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Low 68. High 89.

  1. M.L. … If you are reading this please see my answer to your question on the previous post. Thanks for reading!

  2. Thanks TK !

After a one month (June) change from the above normal temps and a two month (May and June) change from the below normal precip, the region is currently back to warmer and drier than normal conditions. It is early in July, so there’s room for plenty of change.

Thru July 7, temp and precip departures (courtesy of Taunton NWS climate data)

    Logan : +4.7F, -0.50 inches
    Hartford, CT : +4.7F, -0.08 inches
    Providence, RI : +4.4F, -0.38 inches
    Worcester : +4.9F, -0.78 inches

    1. Thanks TK. And thank you Tom

The Sudbury river all around this area is looking more like a stream. I notice hopkinton, wayland and Ashland all have water bans. I don’t know about other towns since I just saw signs as we drove through those.

      1. we do not have water bands in billerica yet but they will be comming . The marsh barely has enough water to kayak.

        1. Isn’t it odd that despite such low water levels we are no longer considered to be in drought. Worcester cty is in an abnormally low area but that’s it

  3. Thanks TK. As I said last night this could be the best week of the summer weatherwise.

  4. Thankfully these blasts of heat and humidity we have had so far this summer have not lasted long.

      1. It makes it lovely when you know they are short lived. I think I’d love this time of year in Seattle as described by my husbands cousin but I would have trouble with no snow in winter. Turns out she is a weather nut too and enjoys following local and world weather.

  5. NWS has already forecasted low-mid 90’s for Saturday…the beginning of a potential long term major heat wave for us in NE? πŸ™

    1. I don’t know about these NWS temp forecasts. They may be too high again. Even their zone forecasts are saying temperatures steady around 90 for this afternoon when most stations are between 83 and 88. They seem to think it’s hotter everywhere than it is. Same thing yesterday.

      1. We have been in low 90s here all afternoon but we were able to sit on the porch with the ceiling fan going and on the deck with the breeze because the humidity has dropped as promised by TK. Thanks TK. Today was definitely best of weekend to have our company as you forecast!

          1. Why do we use Logan. Being on the water it really isn’t representative. It was 92 in Brookline. But a stronger breeze than we have had here

Kids were at Humarock today and said water was incredibly warm. Of course along with the warmer water somes bugs and water worms. Ewwwww

  6. That will get me ready for when I go down to Virginia for vacation last few days of July beginning of August.

  7. Like yesterday, today’s CPC 6-10 & 8-14 can again be combined into a 6-14 featuring a drier/hotter pattern for New England.

    1. Ok think positive. I will enjoy the oppressive weather. I will enjoy the oppressive weather. I will……………. πŸ˜€

    1. Most of it looks fantastic. Just updated the forecast on the next entry. No big changes for now. Maybe a shower/storm threat later in the weekend, hopefully that doesn’t come up sooner. Don’t see any big rain events at least.

      Enjoy your week!
