The Week Ahead

7:06PM

A weak trough in eastern Canada will push a westerly jet stream flow over New England with dry weather for much of the coming week. This flow will relax later in the week as some of the heat that has plagued the Midwest tries to edge toward the region. Before that can happen, it will be comfortable for a good portion of the week, with no significant rain threats. It looks like a disturbance on Tuesday will pass south of the region, far enough so that rain does not work into the region, and an ocean breeze at midweek may help to pop a few showers as it runs up against opposing winds inland, but this is a low probability. It remains unclear if any showery weather will accompany the return of humidity at the end of the week. That will be something to monitor. Going to keep the forecast mainly dry through Saturday and introduce a shower and thunderstorm threat for next Sunday when we could be hearing from either or both a front from the north and tropical moisture from the south.

Forecast for the week ahead for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

  1. Thanks TK for the update. It’s too bad that the great weather can’t last into next weekend. It seems so far this summer, there is always some weather “issue” on weekends even if it is a relatively minor one (i.e., shower/t-storm, brief downpour etc.).

I am certainly not looking forward to the following week…HHH? πŸ™

    1. Often hard to avoid “issues” when you are in the path of the jet stream and you live next to the ocean. But that’s what we have to deal with here. πŸ™‚

I know you despise the HHH. Myself, I am a fan of it, and am in the mood for a bit of it. Not a lock that we really get entrenched in that pattern just yet. Too many things that can mess it up looking out this far.

      1. I will enjoy the oppressive weather. Hmmmm did I say that already πŸ˜‰

JK. Weather is what it is. HHH is my least fav but might as well sit back and enjoy. I might put on some Christmas music !!

          1. I remember when Filene’s Basement would have “Christmas in July” sales. You could actually get some real nice decorations for a very low price. One summer I bought a real nice nutcracker. πŸ™‚

  2. Thanks TK !

Logan officially came in at 89F, second 89F day in the last couple of weeks.

It is purely tropical right along the coastline south of Boston this evening. Plymouth dewpoint at 68F and Marshfield at 70F. There’s no breeze and the air is very heavy. Logan’s dewpoint shot up from 52F to 59F the last hour with a wind shift to the northeast. Ocean has really warmed up the last few weeks and if the wind is light off of it now, it turns muggy. I wonder if that dry air has another surge in it to push into coastal southeast Mass ?

      1. That makes sense because the water at the beaches have been warm to say the least. I wonder how that warm ocean temps will effect tropical storm potential and fall/ winter storms.

        1. As I said. Warm water brings bugs and worms. My daughter said there was some kind of little white worm in the water today. Forget what she called it

Coastal great question about affecting hurricanes. So far two near misses last two years

  3. Anyone have any thoughts on taking a 1 and 2 year old on a 7 hour flight to LA? Bad idea? Good Idea? Don’t do it if you don’t have to?

    Sorry Tk!

    1. Do they sit for long periods. I suspect it depends on their temperaments. I would def say nonstop

      1. My daughter just pointed out they took their son when two on 7 hr drive to canamdaigua and he was great. On a plane they can move around. But there is a long wait before too

        1. LOL…I’d take 7 minutes !

I wonder if a late departure, say in the evening, might help them sleep if it is close to their avg bedtime ?

        2. My son did. And both my granddaughters would. Now that I think of it we drove to charleston every year from time they were 3 with 14 hours first day and all were fine. Not so sure about two as young as yours coastal. That is different. Mine are all 3 yrs apart

            1. My husband says go for it. His mom flew NY to Swden in early 50s with two yr old twis and 5 yr old. It was 23 hour flight. My FIL went ahead to get their house settled. I preferred flying with our kids. When we drive we don’t stop and all stay in car seats. I like toms idea of night they may sleep whole way. Most imp is too keep Them hydrated. My SIL flight att says that is huge problem with kids on planes

            2. You could take a bag for each with some small new toys and their fav foods etc. we always got a new cuddly stuffed animal or doll and it was their safety net so to speak. Even a blankie I’ll keep thinking. When is trip.

    1. 73 at Logan. 63 dp…drier air taking its sweet time coming down from NNE as usual. πŸ™

  4. Hey TK…Barry has stated on his blog and on-air that he despises HHH as well. Has he ever expressed that fact to you? Just curious. πŸ™‚

    1. Philip I was thinking about HHH. My oldest loves that type of weather but she was telling me this as we sat in her air conditioned house. I’m wondering if the vast majority of those who do love HHH have a pool or AC or both. I’d love to know who likes it with neither.

      1. you could always go to the beach or lake or go to a family member that has one. πŸ˜€

  5. does anyone else see a front moving over the area saturday then stalling south of new england and then an area of low pressure riding up it for sunday it is what i saw on a few model runs. but it seems it will be warm out.

  6. I don’t mind HHH – but in increments during the summer. In other words, a few days here and there with some cooler, drier periods in-between. Summer would not be summer to me w/o HHH. And having the haze, heat and humidity at times during the summer makes the beautiful, cool, crisp days of autumn that much nicer!

    1. Hi Rainshine – nice to see you here πŸ™‚ You and your husband have been in my thoughts.

      1. Thanks, Vicki. It’s been hard. We had another cat yrs. ago and lost her 15 yrs. ago – just before we got our most recent cat. We are thinking twice about getting a new cat. We are older now and my husband’s back is bad. However, if we did get another cat, it would get so much love and at this point in my life, I still can scramble around with a kitten. But – we will think about it. I’m glad you had a nice wknd. I hope your aunt(?) enjoyed her stay. I think it was your aunt. Looks like it’s going to be a great week weather-wise.

        1. rainshine – we have wrestled with the same decision each time we have lost a dog. It’s a difficult one. Each time we say we are not sure but each time after a few months the quiet in the house is too loud without an animal.

And this to me is yet another top 10 day!

        2. oops forgot – we had a wonderful visit with my husband’s aunt – and I do think of her as my aunt also – and my husband’s cousin from Seattle. Thank you!

  7. Hottest air I ever felt was Cairo, Egypt in July followed by Ajo, AZ in August. Both felt like opening the door to an oven just to step outside! No humidity to speak of, just intense dry heat.

  8. I lived in Saudi Arabia and temps regularly would be 115-125! We fried an egg cooked well done on the ground during mid summer heat.

  9. There is no heat in an urban area like Saudi Arabia. Parts off ya in the Sahara are hotter but few people live there.
