Thursday April 17 2025 Forecast (7:26AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 17-21)

A cool northwesterly air flow continues today between low pressure in Atlantic Canada and high pressure to our southwest. We will have considerably more sunshine than yesterday and a less gusty wind, making it feel more pleasant despite the “below normal” temperature readings. Friday, look for more cloud cover and perhaps a quick hit of light rain, mainly northern portions of our region, as a warm front approaches. Another mid level moisture surge can bring an additional batch of rain showers Friday evening / night as the warm front goes by, and then we enter the warm sector of low pressure passing to our north on Saturday. This will easily be the warmest day of the spring so far across the region, but there will be a cooling influence along the South Coast where a southwesterly air flow comes off the ocean water to the south of New England. A cold front trailing from the passing low pressure system will move through in the evening with perhaps a passing rain shower, but there does not appear to be a lot of support for much in the way of rainfall. Sunday (Easter for those celebrating) will be a fair, breezy and slightly cooler day with a northwesterly air flow behind the cold front. High pressure builds toward and eventually across the region during Monday (Patriots Day). Dry weather will prevail for the Red Sox traditional home game with late morning first pitch, and for the Boston Marathon. We will see increasing clouds ahead of the next low pressure system, but it looks like any threat of rainfall will hold off until Monday night. That day will be a little cooler than Sunday with a slightly cooler air mass in place, enhanced in coastal areas by the development of a sea breeze during the day.

TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, diminishing.

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 32-39. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. A brief period of light rain possible north of I-90. Highs 53-60, coolest coast. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. A chance of passing rain showers evening. Lows 45-52 evening then a slow temperature rise overnight. Wind SE shifting to SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: A sun/cloud mix. A possible late day rain shower favoring areas north and west of Boston. Highs ranging widely from 55-62 South Coast to 73-80 interior valleys and typical warm spots. Wind SW 10-20 MPH, gusty.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. A shower possible early, favoring Boston south. Lows 45-52. Wind shifting to NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 58-65. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 38-45. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 55-62, coolest coast. Wind NW up to 10 MPH becoming variable with coastal sea breezes developing.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 22-26)

Passing low pressure systems bring some rainfall chances about every other day during this unsettled stretch with variable but overall near normal temperatures. Future fine-tuning to come.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 27 – MAY 1)

Typical springtime pattern of a warm US Southeast and a chilly eastern Canada with our region in a mid-ground “battle zone” of potential unsettled weather and variable temperatures, none of which can be pin-pointed this far in advance.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK

bottomed out at 39 hete this morning.

Will we top 80 on Saturday?
I bet we do. Time will tell.

  2. Thanks, TK…

34 when I left at 6:30. Had to scrape the windshield before heading out.

  3. Interesting discussion from the NWS that hint that temperatures
on Saturday will likely stay below 80.

850mb temperatures warm to 12-14C and with afternoon
mixing will likely support highs in the 70s for much of southern
New England. There are even ensemble members that display the potential for upper 70s and a few 80s in spots, mainly within the GFS ensemble. It will likely come down to how many breaks in the cloud we get. A tightened pressure gradient/LLJ present will support stronger southerly flow with gusts 25-35 mph, perhaps a few gusts up to 40 mph for the higher elevation spots.

    Oh well, 70s sounds great!!!!

    1. A SOUTHERLY wind here with the cold water to the South of us, (Block Island buoy water temperature is 42.1) , NO WAY we make 80 in Boston. “Perhaps” Merrimack Valley if any place.

I thought the wind would be more SW. Even in JUNE a Southerly wind would cap temps at around 80. Mid April? NO WAY.

I stand corrected. I WITHDRAW my betting we will top 80 on
      Saturday.

  4. Tom:

Do you have school tomorrow, Good Friday? We do. I believe it’s the first time that classes are in session on Good Friday. The kids have a half day. Staff has PD till 2:20.

    1. Wow Captain, I didn’t think any schools around here were open. My Bus is quite pleased to be starting spring vacation tomorrow. 🙂

      1. I think it has everything to do with Juneteenth as a federal holiday. I believe our school committee originally wanted to end the school year before June 19 and so counted Good Friday as a day of school. Last year we had it off. We were supposed to end the year on June 18, but, because we had a “snow” (it was mostly rain and slush) day on February 6, we leaped over Juneteenth (federal holiday) and our last day is June 20.

I think we are the only region in the nation where Juneteenth affects the end of the school year. Most of the country is out of school in May or early June.

        1. Sorry about that Captain. That’s what happens when Superintendents cancel classes the day/night before instead of waiting until morning to decide. Back in my day it was somewhat rare for cancellations the day before unless it was a “sure bet” superstorm. Oh well. ❄️

Have a good April vacation to you and all the teachers here! 🙂

          1. I gotta repeat. The parents are insisting that the supers decide the night before. I don’t agree but then I also know back in our day the mom didn’t work outside of the house

    2. I checked sutton and uxbridge and both have full days tomorrow. I’m assuming (sorry Felix) that most schools out here will do the same.

    3. Wow Captain !!

No, we don’t have school tomorrow.

We get Good Friday off every year and this year, it just happens to add a day to spring break.

  5. Sean Newcomb had a very good outing (his best in a Red Sox uniform) last night against the Rays with 4.2 innings pitched, 0 runs, and 4Ks. That may be his last start for the Sox ever or, at least, for a while, as Newk has been a placeholder for Brian Bello who is scheduled to return to the rotation next week.

In addition to Newcomb’s performance, I was overjoyed to see the Red Sox win in just 2 hours and 17 minutes! 🙂

  6. Re: The NWS write-up on Saturday’s temps. Agree. And yes there is a reason I used 73-80 as the range for the interior with the high potential only for the typically warmest spots, assuming there is enough sun.

  7. Tom:

Congratulations to making it to Spring Break!!! Woo-Hoo!

    Please enjoy a well-deserved vacation! 🙂

  8. TK – Are you now ready to climb aboard the “we are done with snow for 2024-25” train with the rest of us? 😉

    1. Why would I change from the date I always use? The latest recorded date of measurable snow for Boston.

      You NEVER make assumptions. Ever.

That said, given the date and climatology, odds highly dis-favor further measurable snowfall at Boston. But the probability is NOT 0%.

  9. Probably not very pleasant down in Puerto Rico without AC the last day or so. 58% of the power restored. 85 degrees and 73 dew points currently.

  10. It’s rare you get 7 NHL games that mean absolutely nothing, other than determining some final season stats for those playing in them, but that’s exactly what we have on this final night of the regular season in the NHL. All the match-ups are set. The schedule is set. Playoffs begin Saturday!

    1. This very disappointing hockey season for me as a Rangers fan can not end soon enough. From winning the Presidents trophy a year ago to not making the playoffs. I feel bad for Rangers announcer Sam Rosen who is retiring after calling Rangers games for 40 years and won’t get to call playoff games.

      1. None of the “original” NHL teams (including Bruins) made the playoffs for the first time in NHL history.

        1. Actually, 2 of the original 6 teams are in the playoffs.
Toronto Maple Leafs & Montreal Canadiens.

          1. Then I stand corrected. All of the “American” teams are out though, which has never happened before.

            Boston Bruins
            NY Rangers
            Chicago Blackhawks
            Detroit Redwings

  11. Thanks, TK!

I seem to be first or last this morning!

    31 frosty degrees at 6:30!

    Paul Revere’s Ride
    By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

LISTEN, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
    On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.

A poem that I, and probably some of you, had to memorize in grade school! 🙂
