DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 19-23)

A healthy southwesterly air flow will deliver a summer preview to our region today with warm air dominating. The exception, of course, will be where the wind comes off ocean water south of New England, keeping the South Coast and southeastern MA considerably cooler – typical for April. We’ll not have full sunshine all day, so this will knock a little bit off the high temperature potential, but it won’t prevent it from getting really warm (some 80+ potential) away from the ocean’s influence. I’m only looking for the potential of a passing shower and very slight thunderstorm risk, especially north of I-90, during this evening, as a cold front moves through. This will set up a fair, cooler (but still mild), Easter Sunday with an active breeze but plenty of sunshine. High pressure builds over the region Sunday night and holds into Patriots Day – Monday – with fair and cooler weather. Coastal areas end up coolest on Monday due to sea breeze development. Additionally, some limiting of the sun will occur due to high clouds advancing ahead of an approaching warm front. This front will bring the chance of brief light rain to parts of the region Monday night, before a cold front trailing from low pressure passing to the north brings a rain shower chance during the first 12 hours of Tuesday. This exits Tuesday afternoon and we then have high pressure building toward the region with more fair weather through Wednesday, which will be a bit cooler than Tuesday.

TODAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 50-57 Islands and Outer Cape Cod, 58-65 South Coast to MA South Shore – coolest former and mildest latter, 66-73 just inland from South Coast and MA South Shore as well as Cape Ann of MA, 74-81 elsewhere with isolated 82+ readings possible in interior valley areas. Wind SW increasing to 10-20 MPH, a few higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy this evening with a potential passing shower and slight chance of a thunderstorm, mainly north of I-90. Clear overnight. Lows 47-54. Wind shifting to NW 5-15 MPH, a few higher gusts.

SUNDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 58-65. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 38-45. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny through midday, then some increase in cloudiness. Highs 55-62, coolest coast. Wind NW up to 10 MPH becoming variable with coastal sea breezes developing.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. A brief period of light rain possible evening. Chance of rain showers toward dawn. Lows 48-55. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain showers through midday. Partly to mostly sunny thereafter. Highs 65-72. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifting to NW, a few higher gusts possible.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 46-53. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 62-69. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 24-28)

Unsettled weather chances later April 24 to early April 25, briefly April 26. Overall trend is a little drier for this period with somewhat variable temperatures but no extremes.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 29 – MAY 3)

Fairly typical spring look to the pattern. Chilly to the north in eastern Canada, a warmer Southeast US, and our area in between with a couple unsettled weather chances and variable temperatures.

    According to the navigation channel on the TV, we are east of northern NJ, where the ocean temp is under 50F, thus so is the air temp, lol. Howling SW wind with building seas.

    We should be crossing the Gulf Stream middle of the day, so the extreme chill should stop then.

    Thank you for the birthday wishes yesterday.
    I’m definitely looking forward to the warmer weather the next few days, but as a seasonal allergy sufferer like many, I think these next few days will be rough, as the trees are just waiting to explode. The last few seasons have been ok, but this one I feel is going to be severe. This is just a non scientific guess.

    1. 70 at Logan and 72 at Norwod.
      FWIW the wind is straight SW and NOT S. Therefore 80 is certainly in play even at Logan. We shall see. Of course if the wind shifts to S or even SSW then 80 would be unlikely.

  12. The under / over for Swampscott today is 77F or to keep it line with the comments above, about 537 Rankine.

  13. Batch of showers crossing Southern NH and Northern MA right now. That’ll put a serious dent in chances to top 80, though it’s already in the upper 70s across the Merrimack Valley.

    1. Those are holding together a little further east than I thought they might. But the clouds are still running up against some resistance as every time it looks like it wants to thicken up, the dimmed sun just keeps on going.

    Running errands here in Manchester CT. Sun is out and feels hot. 84F on the car thermometer. Was 76F at the house in Coventry when I left.

    Huge brush fire last night in Haddam. Getting very dry out there again.

    SAK, if OWD hits 86 you did mention something like that the other day with 86 as the top # in your range, so….. yup!

    A very warm April 19, but how many times has Boston hit 80 or higher on this date? This is the 7th time…

    The 82 from 4/19/1976 came just one day after the 94 at Boston on 4/18/1976. 90+ heat continued inland on Patriots Day (4/19), and while a sea breeze thwarted Boston’s attempt at 90+, it was a very hot Boston Marathon, dubbed “The Run For The Hoses”.

    Looks like a pretty typical, and fairly tame, spring pattern setting up for much of the CONUS for the rest of this month at least, as has been the case for most of the month so far. Generally biased towards the warm side of normal east of the Rockies, but fickle towards the coast as usual. Here on the West Coast it’s been up and down but generally unremarkable as well, but biased a little more to the cool side of normal, and likewise, that looks to continue for awhile. Not a lot of big extremes to be found of late.

    I’ve got storm chasing plans starting 5/17, so I’ll be looking for clues on the longer term pattern 😉

    I believe the average “first” 80F of the year is May 1 or thereabouts. A bit ahead of schedule.

    1. And one week ago today I was skiing at Jay Peak on 4-5 feet of natural snow with snow falling all day and temps in the 30s. Ahh, spring in New England.

    2. Hit 84F here on the home thermometer. That is impressive given we are at 700’ elevation and typically 5-7F cooler than Hartford. Still sitting at 82.8F here at 5pm.

  32. Just walked at Rock Meadow in Belmont, and the car thermometer (in the shade) read 83 when we returned.

    I’m with you, JimmyJames: if the summer never got beyond 80’s/50’s, I’d be thrilled!

  33. I literally saw the same people on social media complaining about how cold it was last Saturday complaining about it being “too hot” today.

    So, so, SO glad I don’t do that, but it would be awesome if that was my biggest “problem”.

  38. What a grand day here in Queens NY. Left the South Coast this morning with a stiff seabreeze and 51 degrees and by 5pm I was at Citifield watching Mets beat Cardinals 3-0 in 85 degree temps. A lovely day

    1. Wow. I remember that day(s). We had our client conference at the Copley that week. Advice for clients who were from all states and further was being warm clothes.
