Friday June 20 2025 Forecast (6:55AM)

DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 20-24)

The final hours of spring today will feature a dew point crash with incoming dry air, but this will be accompanied by quite a bit of wind on the back side of a pretty potent low pressure area moving from northern New England into southeastern Canada. Some cloudiness will be moving across our sky to start the day, but lower atmospheric drying will lead to more sun with just a few passing fair weather clouds as the day goes on. It’ll be a relatively warm day, but less hot than yesterday and even feeling a bit cool out of the sun due to the gusty breeze. That breeze will ease tonight as low pressure pulls away. We welcome summer with the occurrence of the solstice tonight, 10:41 p.m. EDT. Look for a clear evening then some varying amounts of high and middle clouds to arrive from the northwest overnight due to upstream convective activity in the Great Lakes – typical for this time of year in the pattern that evolves heading into the weekend. This may limit the sun at times Saturday, especially in the morning, but overall it’s a nice day with dry weather, warm air, less wind, and fairly low humidity. Another complex of thunderstorms, this one more potent, will be developing this evening in the Upper Plains into the Upper Midwest (something mentioned several times this week). This system will move across the Upper Great Lakes Saturday then bear right on the atmospheric highway (aka jet stream), moving across New England in the overnight and morning hours of Sunday. It’s uncertain how much of the actual thunderstorm activity will survive the trip, and while northern New England certainly stands the best chance of seeing some of that, here in our region we can see a passing shower or storm at some point between the pre-dawn and mid morning hours of Sunday – something to monitor and fine tune, eventually “now-cast”. The remainder of Sunday, behind that system, will feature a sun/cloud mix, a bit more humidity, and warm air, but I think the chance of any additional shower or thunderstorm will be extremely low – enough so that I don’t even mention it in my detailed forecast below. The upper level pattern features a ridge building into our region early next week – a heat signature. However, a weak pressure gradient leaves the coast vulnerable to sea breezes, especially Monday (less so Tuesday) so the higher heat may not occur in every location in our region.

TODAY: Sun/cloud mix, trending sunnier. Highs 78-85. Dew point falls below 60. Wind W 10-20 MPH, gusts 30 MPH or greater until late in the afternoon.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear evening. Partly cloudy overnight. Lows 57-64. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy morning. Mostly sunny afternoon. Highs 78-85. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Clouds arrive. A shower or thunderstorm possible overnight, mainly north and west of Boston. Lows 60-67. Wind S 5-15 MPH, higher gusts overnight.

SUNDAY: Lots of clouds through mid morning with a shower or thunderstorm possible, then a sun/cloud mix. Highs 80-87. Dew point rises above 60. Wind W 5-15 MPH, a few higher gusts.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Patchy fog. Lows 62-69. Dew point 60+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 86-93, but can be cooler along the coastline. Dew point 60+. Wind SW to variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes possible.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear to partly cloudy. Lows 65-72. Dew point 60+. Wind variable to SW up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 90-97 but considerably cooler South Coast, and possibly cooler eastern coastal areas. Dew point 60+. Wind SW to variable up to 10 MPH with a coastal sea breeze potential.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 25-29)

Trend for Canadian high pressure to move more influence with less heat, coolest coastal areas, and mostly fair weather during this period. Best chance to see a shower or thunderstorm around June 26 and/or June 27.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 30 – JULY 4)

Upper level west to northwest flow. This can bring a couple disturbances and shower / t-storm chances to the region, but the overall pattern is dry and seasonably warm.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.
72 overnight, 73 now but ahhhh
    dew point down to 58.

    it was a stinker yesterday!!!

    Still worried about Tuesday.

  2. Will wonders ever cease??
Got today’s wordle game in 2 guesses got 4 letters with my first word. 11 games now and here is my history

    https://ibb.co/kYLSJ84

Got lucky today, in general I need to pick up my game.

fun game I am enjoying it. doesn’t hurt the old brain.

    1. AWESOME, JPD!

I did something I rarely do…I was stumped at midnight so put it aside and went to sleep. I’ll get back to it later this am.

      1. Funny how this game goes. I got lucky with a great first word.
But this same first word today, could yield ZILCH tomorrow.
One never knows. That’s part of the fun.

Does anyone know IF there are a few first words that generally yield results??

So far I have been using a different 1st word each day. Some are clearly better than others. 🙂

        1. If you have a NYT subscription, under the summary you posted where it says “did you beat the bot?” You can click on that each day and it will analyze your guesses compared to what it thinks would have been an ideal guess.

  3. Stranfe occurrence yesterday.

We were using our brand new 8,000 btu air conditioner when it stopped running. I had it set to 72. I checked the temperatue which is included with our thermostat and it read 74-75 so I did not think it made temperature. So I reset the breaker that comes with the unit. I did this several times before I let it stay off for a longer period Then it kicked back on. Damn, it was making temperature. Thermostat is at about 5.5 feet above floor on the other side of the room, so it was not 72 there, but it was by the ac. set ac to 68 and iit ran for 6 hours till bed time. lesson learned

I was going crazy and was about to pull it and put in one of our 6,000 btu units and return the sucker!

    Alls well that ends well.

      1. It was truly weird!! Should have known better. 🙂
But it did work out and the unit worked really well. Thanks

    1. Too high. Several reasons why that’s unlikely.

Wankum & Petey B. see those reasons.

      1. Would you care to enlighten us? OR have you and I wasn’t paying attention? Sorry.

So what is your guess, Heat index of around 100?

  4. Thanks, TK.

It did get to 90F here (near downtown Boston) yesterday, but for some reason it didn’t feel like a scorchah. And I did venture outside a couple of times, though I didn’t run in the heat.

A friend of mine loves summer and the hours of daylight that this time of year offers. But he’s also a perpetual pessimist. I bumped into him yesterday and we talked about the solstice (he’s also a weather nut). He said “yeah, and it’ll all go downhill from there.” I reassured him that: a. There’s plenty of summer left (it hasn’t even really begun); b. We won’t even notice the loss of daylight until mid-July.

  5. Who knew that normally laid-back Southern California would have a now bitter rivalry going between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers. If you’ve been following what’s happened this week, it’s been quite the saga. Pitchers throwing at batters, benches clearing, managers getting tossed. Leave it to Shohei Ohtani to be the peacemaker [He was hit by two pitches this week, by the way] https://x.com/MLB/status/1935938368962982136

  6. Thanks TK! I was awoken by loud gusts of wind about 2:30am here in Padanaram- did the front go through at that time? Just curious. Wind is blowing today!

    1. Same, the chairs etc were being moved a bit on the deck and I could hear that at some point overnight.

  7. As mentioned earlier Mon and Tues a level 3 out of 4 for heat from the NWS heat risk graphic.

    1. Yes. And I think Minnesota has excessive heat watches up reflective of that building heat.

  8. Before the heat watching that potential thunderstorm complex Sat night into Sun morning. SPC has SNE in a level 1 out of 5 for severe weather on Sun.

  9. Tom I got a thunderstorm yesterday. The winds gusted a bit along with brief heavy rain lightning and loud thunder. It was non severe. When the storm moved past me it got warned.

  10. Is there a front going thru? I don’t see anything on radar but I’m also not very good at picking fronts out.

I’ve been sitting on deck with pockets of maybe 7 mph gusts. But the wind just picked up big time.

Air does feel drier. But that could be my imagination

      1. Thank you. Maybe it was just a lull cause it’s crazy windy here again. Sadly the neighborhood is set down and ringed by a hill and very tall trees. That blocks me from getting an accurate wind speed.

  11. JPD re Wordle words. I tend to use my first two words to get all vowels. I wrote these down for starters quite a while ago. I can’t recall where I found them. It seems more often than not now that one of the first two words for many folks yields zilch. I wonder if nyt captures first words and plans its games accordingly

I’ll screen shot words and post link below

  12. When we’ve taken runs at a 100F, a lot of them occur mid July thru mid August.

Certainly there is still a high sun angle, mid July is about 68 degrees down to 61 degrees in mid August.

Well, next Monday and Tuesday, the sun angle is at 71 degrees, so, we have the max solar intensity possible.

Also, this setup is effectively grabbing for 2 days a good piece of heat built up in the southwest and southern Rockies and lifting it through the Great Lakes and down into New England from WNW to ESE.

And the models haven’t eased off at all on building a major heat dome maxing at 597 dm.

So, unless something really changes as we are close to coming out of the medium range and into the short range, I don’t think some of the numbers Monday (inland) and Tuesday (right to the coast) are outlandish by any means.

  13. ECMWF releasing an AI Ensemble on July 1. Based on test data, it is light years ahead of the other models.

  14. Watching the thunderstorm potential over the weekend and the heat early next week.

  15. so far it looks like it will be a ridiculously warm overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, possibly staying 80 or above!!! I do NOT NOT NOT LIKE that in the least! NOT looking forward to early next week at all. Give me MORE of today!!!

    1. Today is awesome ! My wife and I have been sitting in the shade on the back deck most of the morning.

  16. Icon, GDPS, UkMet and GFS all 95-100F Tuesday.

Logan may be 90F+ Sunday and near 100F Tuesday and not qualify for a heatwave due to Monday seabreeze.

    1. Possible. One never knows. It really hot weather I have seen Logan reach 90 even with a light sea breeze. We shall see.

Betcha anything we make 90 here in JP. 🙂

  17. JPD and SClarke, a friend Mac and I worked with who plays wordle daily just got today’s with his first guess!!!!!!!

    1. I used “aisle” for my first guess for a while and one day that was the solution.
      🙂

      1. Awesome. And I agree with JPD. NYT doesn’t like adieu so I’m positive I’ll never get in one.

  18. Thanks TK. Hoping the rain and thunder stay away on Sunday morning for the 10k race at the Boston Common at 8am.

  19. 12Z EURO shows serious heat, 103 for Boston, threatening the all time High. and that is at 2PM. What happens between 2 and 5 PM?? If you use TKs, subtract 5-8 degrees, then that is 95-98, which is bad enough. BRUTAL is all I can say!!!!

    https://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?m=ecmwf_full&p=sfct-imp&rh=2025062012&fh=102&r=us_ne&dpdt=&mc=

However, for Boston it has Dew point of 64-65, so that takes a bit of the edge off, but still DAMN hot!!!

    https://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?m=ecmwf_full&p=sfctd-imp&rh=2025062012&fh=102&r=us_ne&dpdt=&mc=

Again, only 1 model, but with much support from the others.

    1. To hit 103F needs a DP drop, I don’t think our latitude can hit 103F at a 70F+ dp. Just too much moisture in the air to get it that hot.

But yes, on a down sloping mixed air flow that mixes drier air down to the sfc and further warms possibly 22C (850mb) airmass, yes, an august 2nd, 1975 like experience is not off the table, in my opinion.

    2. Praying the power stays on for this. I can’t stand brutal heat. Not one bit.

        1. The 2nd headline was put in there by accident. It was meant for a separate statement. Honest mistake.

  20. Thanks TK.

Gorgeous day down here in Medford NJ at the softball tournament. 83 and sunny with a nice breeze. Not looking forward to tomorrow and especially Sunday. Extreme Heat Watch starts here Sunday and goes all the way through Wednesday night for heat index values to 107.

  21. They used to be called Excessive Heat Watch Excessive Heat Warning. Now there called Extreme Heat Watch Extreme Heat Warning.

      1. First time in a while I’ve felt yukky as well as asthma symptoms worsening, and it isn’t even that bad today.

Getting old is not hot the faint of heart. But I’ll take it as it sure as heck beats the alternative

  22. Ch. 7 still has 100F for Tuesday with Heat Index of 100-105F.

I sure hope “1983” doesn’t repeat itself this upcoming summer.

  23. Speaking of wordle above…

I 80% of the time have played the word CURIO as my first word. It was always my go to word for years. Then yesterday it so happened it was one of the 20% of times I played a different word to start. I saw “U” as the correct letter and my heart sank. I said “please don’t be curio. Please don’t be curio” and it was. One of my chances to get wordle in one try. I’m shopping around for a new first word.

      1. Me and the wife have five games we play every night to see who wins the day:
        Wordle
Connections (try to figure out four groups of four words)
Strands (a crossword puzzle where you get a hint via the topic as to what the crossword is about)
Mini Crossword (which resets to the next days crossword at 10pm on weekdays and 6pm on weekends, which is weird… so we make sure we play by 6.)
Whichyr (the only one not on the nytimes site – you have to guess which year five different pictures are from)

Now, the real head scratcher game I play from time to time is Quordle. It’s four wordle games at once. It’s wild! But it’s a bit hard so the wife won’t play it lol

        1. Fun. I play connections on and off and boxed…I think it’s called.., occasionally Also

My other favorite was nerdle. I don’t know if that still exists.

  24. As of 2:20 this afternoon, I am retired after 42 years as a Spanish teacher. I thank you all for the support and kind words you have offered to me and to all of the educators here on this WHW blog throughout the years.

    1. Congratulations, Captain !

      42 years is amazing !

Thank you for all those you have inspired and given knowledge to, to help make their lives and the world a better place.

      Enjoy your next journey !

    2. A huge congratulations to you Captain and thank you for all you did for so many students that went through your classroom door. Teaching can be a thankless job at times but I will always have the utmost respect and appreciation for anyone who takes on that role. Wishing you nothing but good health and enjoyment in your retirement!

Does this mean you retire from football announcing also? I was hoping to catch a Middleboro game this season!

    1. I just got this on my phone. It’s so confusing to combine the heat and wind like that.

As suggested, I will be drinking plenty of fuids to prevent any wind damage. 🙂

      1. Wow. Thank you for commenting. I thought it was me. And yes ….really confusing.

  25. My forecast highs for Boston the next 5 days…

    Saturday: 83
    Sunday: 86
    Monday: 87
    Tuesday: 96
    Wednesday: 79

    1. I like your numbers! I have an over / under bet of 96F with a friend for Tuesday. I took the Under. A bottle of wine is at stake!! Somehow I need easterlies or something else to appear.

    1. Thank you, Dr S. For a minute I wax having flashbacks to your snow maps. Sighhhhh.

But these are great Also. Several 100s now it seems.

Looks as if Petey B is still in TKs camp

  26. Logan:

    Saturday: 85F
    Sunday: 94F
Monday: 86F both at 10am and again at 7pm
Tuesday: 101F with a DP drop to 61F when the high temp occurs at 2:54pm.

    1. I might be able to at least get behind the Tuesday prediction if the wind was going to blow more than 8 or 9 MPH from the west.

  27. MCS is firing up in the Dakotas, right on schedule.

This has implications on our weather that a lot of people have overlooked. I’ll get more into that tomorrow…

  28. I think a lot of local media temp forecast for Sunday may be 5 to 10 degrees too warm. I think even mine might be too high. I adjusted slightly.

We’ll be getting a lesson on how much a MCS can change the weather for a region.

  29. One thing you won’t hear from the media, but will from me…

1 to 2 feet of snow this weekend for the mountains of southwestern Montana into Idaho. A nice snowstorm to welcome summer. 🙂

    1. 2 feet of snow around here…not since January 29, 2022. ❄️

An infamous date we’ve been hearing in the media for the past 3 years now. 😉

  30. The Red Sox are currently 3 games over .500, the 3rd Wild Card, and only 4 games out of 1st place in the AL East.

  31. I heard on the radio that Devers took grounders at first base. I guess the first base bags on the “West Coast” is more to his liking and the “East Coast” bags didn’t quite cut it for him. 😉

    1. He did. Saw video of him doing just that and he looked good.
go figure. I guess we’ll never know the real story.

    2. It’s time to let it go, like we should any time something like this happens.

Focus on the team now, you know, that team that I told everybody would be about .500 this year that is currently a few games over .500 … People should listen to people like SAK and myself when it comes to sports (especially him) and weather (both of us) more often. 🙂

  32. The rain early Sunday is the caveat for the high temps. HRRR has it and pretty much everything else says nope.
