DAYS 1-5 (JULY 26-30)
Today is a day that will “look” hot and humid, because of a veil of Canadian wildfire smoke that is moving northwest to southeast across our sky in the upper level wind flow. But looks can be deceiving, because while it will be a warm day, it won’t be nearly as hot as yesterday, and will be much less humid, as a Canadian air mass with much lower dew points has arrived behind a cold front. That was the front that triggered thunderstorms for many areas, especially southeastern sections, during yesterday afternoon. High pressure is now in control and will provide our nice day, albeit with smoke-filtered sunshine. At least there is no rain threat, and this makes 4 consecutive Saturdays without a drop of rain in Boston (5 out of 6) – how come the mainstream media isn’t talking about that streak?! š That said, the area is not going to have a completely dry Sunday, as a quick-moving disturbance will be delivering a batch of showers from west to east Sunday morning and midday. Although it moves out quickly enough that a few to several hours of the afternoon / evening may end up being fairly decent with breaking clouds and just a chance of an additional passing shower. High pressure moves in Monday with fair, warm, humid weather, then slides offshore with a shot of heat and humidity for Tuesday. Another wildfire smoke plume is likely to filter the sunshine again on Monday. A trough / frontal system approach late Tuesday with a thunderstorm threat, but timing may be later evening / night, limiting the thunderstorm chances. Wednesday, another high builds in with fair, warm, less humid weather.
TODAY: Smoke-filtered sunshine / high clouds also stream in midday on. Highs 78-85, coolest in coastal locations. Dew point falling through 50s. Wind N up to 10 MPH with developing coastal sea breezes.
TONIGHT: Smoke exits / clouds increase. Lows 62-69. Dew point rising through 50s. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy with showers likely west to east morning-midday. Clouds can break for sun but an additional shower possible rest of day. Highs 76-83, coolest South Coast. Dew point 60s. Wind S 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy with a possible shower in the evening. Clearing but patchy ground fog overnight. Lows 61-68. Dew point 60+. Wind W up to 10 MPH.
MONDAY: Smoke-filtered sunshine. Highs 83-90, cooler some coastal areas. Dew point in 60s. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.
MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 63-70. Dew point 60+. Wind S up to 10 MPH.
TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Late-day showers / thunderstorms possible, mainly western areas. Highs 86-93. Dew point 60s to near 70. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. A shower or thunderstorm possible. Patchy fog. Lows 66-73. Dew point middle 60s to 70. Wind W up to 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 82-89. Dew point near 60. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (JULY 31 ā AUGUST 4)
Eyeing a disturbance for a shower/thunderstorm chance some time July 31. High pressure brings fair weather for the first several days of August, starting with a shot of cooler air then followed by a warming trend.
DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 5-9)
Overall pattern features near to below normal temperatures but also mostly dry weather with a continued dominant northwesterly air flow.
Thanks, TK.
Thank you TK!
Good morning and thank you TK
70 overnight here with current temp 77 with dp 54
NICE!!!
Thanks TK !
This is a shot my son got from his office building near Government Center. It shows lightning hitting a tall building at MIT across the Charles.
https://ibb.co/4CphqPR
Wow – that’s great!
I have a nice shot of that building from the Boston side of the river on July 4, without the lightning. š
Amazing photo. Wow.
Awesome !
It is incredibly hazy today with a bad AQI number bc of the aforementioned smoke in tkās post.
148 in my area. Not healthy at all!!!
169 for my area. Yard work and longer run will be tomorrow. Indoors only today.
If Iām looking at the correct map, I get 77
Thanks, TK.
What a night for Nick Kurtz, rookie Athletics player. He went 6 for 6, with 4 homeruns. https://x.com/CodifyBaseball/status/1948946920686428210
Holy Crap!!! I’d say he has quite a future ahead of him!!!!
Thank you, TK!
60 was our low. Now 66/65
That 65 DP should be 61
I had planned a ten mile-ish run for this morning to acclimate myself more and more for a potential half marathon in the fall⦠I get out there and the smell from the smoke is so awful. I begin my run and within the first half mile I could feel it in my chest. Thought Iād still grind it out anyway but once at the mile mark, I doubled back home. Tomorrow *should* be better AQI numbers and would be smarter.
Darn. Good try but ugh since itās a lovely morning otherwise.
In a major step toward acting like a human, the AI working for the FDA has decided to fabricate some studies and data.

Very interesting. I subscribe to a group that has a fantastic AI option. Nothing attempting this level which has worried me from the start
For Wordle. I have a lucky 3 today
Fail for me. Had the last 4 letters after 3 and guess 4,5 and 6 were all the wrong word. I HATE that!!!
I do also. Choices is a newer tactic used by nyt. It is so frustrating.
It seems you’re on a Wordle Roll Vicki!
I got it in 4.
Nice four. And Thank you. Itās a story of ups and downs and more downs.
Thanks Tk
Broke my 2 day losing streak and got it in 6 today.
Like at home, that front overnight cleared out the warmth and humidity of yesterday and itās 66F with a 56F dp and a refreshing breeze off of the 64F Northumberland Strait, along with bright sun.
70F today, forecast to be 82F tomorrow with a SW wind.
Right now feels a little Septemberish and it feels invigorating.
Love it. You sure chose a great time to head to NS.
Sounds like you are having the time of your life!!!
Thanks Vicki and JpDave !
All of my wifeās relatives are really nice people and quite welcoming. They also have a lot of fun, the other night we played a 13 person card game of Scat (31). They love music and entertainment and just take life in stride.
And then, thereās the scenery and everything about Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. Everyoneās packed in like sardines on the Cape and everywhere else down there and up here, largely, itās free reign to go to amazing beaches, trails, you name it and thereās some people but you donāt have to worry about not finding a spot after 9am.
It sure doesnāt get much better. Iām so happy for you all. Are you gone a month??
3+ weeks.
We come back August 3rd.
What a great vacation. ā¤ļø
Is today WxWatcherās wedding day or did I make that up??
I do believe so.
It is, and I wish them a happy wedding day!
I know it’s indoors, but the weather is perfect for it, no worries for anybody going to and coming from.
Awesome. I wish them decades of happiness. What a great weather day. Seems quite fitting
Cool ! Wishing them a very happy day today and all the best for years and years to come.
Trends on RRFS & HRRR are for less rainfall time tomorrow.
I still played it a little pessimistic this morning, but it may end up being a “nicer” day vs. a “not nice” day, with a quicker batch of warm frontal showers in the morning, then a break with a sun/cloud mix, before a shower or t-storm visits some areas later in the day / early evening with a “kind of” cold front. I say kind of because it’s probably more a dew point boundary than it is an air mass change. Many areas Monday, behind that front, end up warmer than they will be Sunday. Again though, this is not unusual for summer in New England.
I went to check the NWS discussion…
First, the synopsis talks about continued severe thunderstorms this afternoon. Oops. Someone forgot to update that…
And a little further down, he’s another direct copy / paste:
Rain and cloudiness will result in a cooler
day with highs in the
……… Highs in the what?! Don’t leave us hanging like that!
Weāre having a lazy day today, just chilling and catching up on rest.
I have WiFi and got to see a couple model runs.
These occasional Canadian air masses from time to time the next 16 days, they are quite cool for august.
The warmups behind them are still pretty warm to hot though, so I wonder if we may be experiencing a 5 day temp pattern of say ā¦.. 76F, 85F, 91F, 94F, 76F that kind of rinses and repeats which may bring that 90F day total to a high number while overall being very close to average as a whole.
What should probably be a nice āblueā sky today instead we have to endure wildfire smoke from Canada.
TK – Are we going to have these smoke filled skies every time a Canadian airmass arrives for the rest of this summer? š
No. We haven’t for most of them. It’s only when the air flow is just so, also relative to where the fire(s) is/are and what their status is. In this case, it’s a smoke day. It eases tonight and Sunday, returns Monday, then eases again after that.
Smoke from Canada is nothing new. Many of our hazy days in decades past were not always from “Midwest pollution”, but from high altitude wildfire smoke.
Seldom do you see a lightning strike resulting in the destruction of a vehicle, however they are more prone to suffering mechanical issues now because of a greater amount of electronic components in modern vehicles in comparison to vehicles of the past.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uaupIZufUY
Yikes! Does this mean that vehicles are no longer āsafeā during thunderstorms?
No. Vehicles (except ones with “fabric” convertible roofs or made of fiberglass), are generally safe places to be, in regards to lightning, during thunderstorms. What happened in the above case is most definitely the exception.
Almost went climbing in the Whites early this AM but smoke made think twice. Couldn’t find a reliable AQI forecast so I decided that common sense should take over. Took a pass. Chances are good that the mountain will still be there next week. š
I think itās a good chance too. But for the smoke it would be a perfect day
Thanks TK! This smoke caught me
Off guard. I donāt recall NWS even hinting at it for today. I am starting to get frustrated with this pattern – cool fronts bringing smoke instead of fresh air..
This is actually only the 3nd time we’ve had considerable smoke behind a cold front, out of many more cold fronts than that.
It’s actually more common than people realize.
However, we do have a break a few hours away, and tomorrow, before a return of the smoke Monday, and then another departure.
Any chance of a heat wave early next week? Looks like Tuesday is the only definite day.
For Boston, I do not believe they will have a heatwave.
Sea breeze should thwart Monday, Tuesday they hit 90 or 91, and Wednesday they fail to reach it.
That would be #15 for the season, which is average.
Yup. August starts out cool, and then we’ll see if they can tack on another couple / few and edge above the average for the season.
Next Saturday will be the 5th consecutive Saturday with zero rain at Boston (not even a trace), and the 6th out of 7.
Since local news kept hammering us with that silly run of “rainy weekends” that were not actually mostly rainy, just had wet segments, I’ll take up the opposite side of the spectrum, because I’m a weather wise ass. It’s fun. š
Truthfully, the majority of those rainy Saturdays had at least several dry hours, and sometimes the “rainy” part was overnight, or late evening, and had virtually no impact on anything.
#TellItLikeItIs <---- I do that!
I am about to head to Revere Beach. This is the evening they do fireworks for the sand sculpture competition. Good luck getting close enough to see the actual sculptures though – crowd is thick on the Saturday, so I usually go back with my son on Monday to get a much more unimpeded view. š
Really just there for a little Kelly’s meal and some fireworks tonight, and some photos of the area. The sculpture photos will be taken on Monday.
Have a great evening!
I know you probably won’t be checking the blog today, WxWatcher, but congrats!!!
Enjoy. I have wonderful memories of Kellyās. Yum
I Suspect you are right about WxWatcher but also send my very best wishes.
Just back from a special dinner with my son and daughter in law at a nearby restaurant. It is a perfect night for outdoor seating. I had PEI muscles that were delicious and thought of you and your family, Tom!
Knock knock. Anyone home????
67/57
I am now! What a great night! And one of the first nights I’ve felt really good for the entire evening since the autoimmune flare kicked in and on top of that the virus I had.
Even having to deal with shuttle busses for part of my T route, no big deal. š
Well you made my night. I am so happy for you. Itās been too longā¦two months ?
How has your mother been doing?
Great question. Nice to see another night owl
It’s been a very, very slow process and this week while she has been working on PT & OT, she’s also still very tired, and they are also dealing with a little set-back with an infection. But overall, there’s still some hope that things will progress to a better state soon!
Your mother will certainly remain in our thoughts.
Thank you š
Your mom is such a strong lady. She is in my prayers always.
Nice morning walk before the showers come through. This dog doesnāt like summer or humidity!! Sheās a winter dog for sure. I canāt wait for the first snow.
New post…
