Thursday September 18 2025 Forecast (7:06AM)

DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 18-22)

Last week: Forecast more impact from passing low pressure at midweek / got virtually none. This week: Forecast less impact from passing low pressure at midweek / got more than expected (showers, a few thunderstorms, overcast, fog, drizzle). Mother Nature’s trickery, twice. Anyway, the unsettled weather departs today as low pressure drifts away and high pressure re-takes control of the weather, and it will be quite a mild afternoon too as we see a return of sunshine. Friday will be another very mild day with dry weather, even though a cold front passes by – not enough moisture left by then for anything more than passing clouds. The weekend features fair, cooler weather – coolest day Saturday on the eastern side of Canadian high pressure, and a chilly night as the high settles overhead, followed by a nice rebound during the day Sunday. High pressure shifts offshore with continued fair weather and a warm-up for Monday as we welcome autumn with the occurrence of the equinox at 2:19 p.m. EDT.

TODAY: Clouds, fog, drizzle, and a lingering shower give way to sunshine. Highs 72-79. Wind variable to SW up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Patchy fog. Lows 53-60. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 75-82. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, shifting to NW.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 47-54. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 63-70. Wind N 5-15 MPH, diminishing late.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 38-45 inland low elevations, 45-52 elsewhere – mildest in urban centers. Wind calm.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 65-72. Wind variable to S up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Patchy fog. Lows 50-57. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 72-79. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (SEPTEMBER 23-27)

Warmer weather around at the start the period will be ended by a front and accompanying shower chance by September 24 which ushers in fair, cooler weather. Next system may bring additional showers by the end of the period, but that is a low confidence / uncertain outlook.

DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 28 – OCTOBER 2)

Continuing to lean toward drier over wetter, and variable temperatures with no extremes.

      1. You and others will get it 3
I used 3 different starting words to get 1 letter in correct position and 2 other letters out of position. Ugh
FInally, the word came to me.

    1. Fail 🙂

Had the 3rd and 5th letters after the first guess and never saw it.

Next 3 guesses netted not another letter and then, I just didn’t see it.

      On to tomorrow ….. 🙂

      1. Oh, sorry to hear.
Today’s word did not work so well with typical starting words.
Need those letters with those initial guesses.
I know there are optimal 1sr and 2nd guesses, but over time all the words that fit those guesses have been used up. It is now truly a crap shoot.

    2. 4 for me too. Two letters in word 1. Nothing on word 2. Same two letters on guess 3 as on 1 Four just came to me also. I don’t think there seems to be a lot of consistency from the majority till you get to guess 4. Most I know who can see the stats have 4 as the highest average.

        1. Thank you. Easy word, but the letters did not lend themselves to typical starting words. Good word.

Truly a mind boggling game at times, but very good for all of us. 🙂

  1. Thanks TK !

Marshfield Airport reporting .10 overnight with a decent mist falling now, we will take it !!!!!

  2. Red Sox. Magic number is 8.

Whether they make it to the playoffs or not is still TBD, but one thing for sure, they are trying!

    1. The Sox have been a lot of fun this summer! It’s September 18 and they’re still relevant! 🙂

  3. 0.21″ of showers. The phone alert reported a lightning strike to our southwest in the early morning hours.

  4. I think I’m just reiterating what TK said, but the NHC has had a tough few days.

Naming Gabrielle so aggressively and totally ignoring what might have been a subtropical storm that made landfall in the mid Atlantic that had gusts btwn 40-60 mph and dropped 4-8 inches of rain, had fresh water and tidal flooding.

    1. Something isn’t right, that’s for sure.
Staffing cuts? Did they fire the more senior staff and inexperienced staff are left?
I don’t know, BUT something is off

      1. I think we need to understand that cuts play a huge part. We said they would when they occurred so no reason to not think this is what we are seeing. I don’t know of any business that can function properly with a fifth of its people gone….especially when short staffed at the start

        1. Don’t get me going. I am already SICKENED by the current
state of affairs. We’re turning back the clock 100 years!!!
          PATHETIC!!!!

          1. I do know and understand how you feel. There is permission to begin rehiring some. But what level will they find. I did find this

“The sudden personnel changes led to turmoil, with reports of confusion and paperwork errors among employees who were fired and subsequently reinstated. “

  5. Impressive little cell developed early this morning. When I left the office in Nashua at 1:30, there were lots of little showers/drizzle across much of eastern Mass. When I got down toward the Needham/Dedham area I hit a downpour and there was a flash of lightning. When I got to Route 24 the sky absolutely opened up. Could only do about 30 mph because you literally couldn’t see through the rain, and the lightning was frequent and bright. I got to the house around 2:45, and the rain ended about 10 minutes later. I had 0.90″ in my gauge, and a personal wx station about 1/2 mile away that I always check against actually had 1.11″.

    1. Wow!

Interesting. I watched ch 10 news last night so saw Tevan Wooten substituting for Pete. And he talked about showers and then he showed a precipitation map.

He actually had a little blob in exactly the area you mentioned with 0.82 inch. Fascinating. One of the short range Hi Res
models must of hit on that pretty well.

    1. Hmmm. You’d think I’d have noticed since I was out this am but I think suns been out here since I woke up

  6. Thanks, TK.

My rain gauge isn’t working. But based on what I observed on my 6-mile run in the mist we got a decent amount. NOT a drought-buster by any stretch of the imagination. Yet it wasn’t just a passing shower.

The ducks and geese loved the puddles. They’re like little kids except they’re not splashing around. In their case, they waddle around, looking for the best spot at the puddle bar. it’s what they prefer drinking: Recent rainwater.

  7. Nice win for the Sox. It was touch-and-go but I’ll take it. The A’s had won 5 straight prior to the loss to the Sox and have been a half-decent team at times.

  8. This post is for Jean.

I’ve marveled at the collection of music at WHRB (Harvard’s radio station). Turns out it is REALLY extensive. https://www.harvardmagazine.com/2015/08/a-broadcast-cornucopia

Currently, they’re playing a Rachmaninoff piece by the USSR Symphony Orchestra. The recording is on the old Melodiya label, which only produced CDs from 1987 to 1990, around the time of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Similarly, I’ve heard Dvorak recordings on the Czechoslovak label Supraphon (I have several vinyl records from Supraphon which I bought in the 80s in Communist Czechoslovakia). Supraphon was privatized after the Velvet Revolution that overthrew the communist government. To this day, it produces music.

    1. Thanks for this! I used to listen to WHRB a lot when I was in the car driving kids around, but less so recently. I’ll check them out again (the station is still on “speed dial” in the car!).

  9. The Guardians are 6 outs away from sweeping the Tigers in Detroit and the Sox are down 4-2.

If this holds the wild card lead will be down to 1.5 gms with the Sox headed on the road for 6:

  10. I see the dps in western and central New England.

It is fairly humid, almost a little uncomfortable in SE Mass. Not warm and humid, but far from refreshing and not a ton of ventilation.

  11. I feel bad for the Sox, I really do.

5-10 in the last 15 games since Anthony got injured.

I think they are focused and trying as hard as they did during the surge in July and August. Maybe even trying a little too hard.

That kid, Anthony, wow, what an effect he had and what a massive loss. Sometimes I read on the internet, well, he’s just 1 player. But, it fouls the whole lineup up. Duran was middle of the lineup all year, now suddenly a lot of lead off. That’s a big change.

I hope they prove me wrong for the 50th team this year, but I think they’ll struggle to hold their wild card spot.

Tampa next who took 2 of 3 from Toronto, then Toronto who has to keep winning to hold off the Yankees, then Detroit, whose slumping and they are going to want to play better before the playoff starts.

      1. I really wish I could do a GIF here. You know which one I’d post. 😛

I really need to open up WHW on a Discord server at some point.

  12. I am on the deck for the first time in a while. I had to check temp when I read posts. It’s 82/62 with a light breeze. Almost cloud free blue sky It feels lovely. Come on over 🙂

    1. I should have listened to the experts. It was lovely for about 30 minutes. Then summer found its way here. I’m back inside trying not to turn AC on. I should have known. My timing can typically stink

  13. Today’s forecast … meh.

    1) The showers (and unexpected thunder) – more aggressive than anticipated.

    2) The clearing process is molasses. There are areas that won’t even see the sun before it sets, making my forecast “not quite correct” for those areas, as I expected pretty complete clearing by now, including Cape Cod.

Sometimes, even in the short range, it doesn’t go the way you think it’s going to. 😉

      1. Luckily you were far enough west to get in on the clearing …but the progress is so slow!

  14. Thanks TK. .61 in the rain gauge here. I was heading to Logan at 11:30 last night and they back between 1:30- 3, and from Braintree to North Attleboro it was off on heavy downpours with wipers on high at some points. We have had some beneficial rain recently here.

  15. NHC’s forecast for Gabby is unlikely to pan out.

-The “tropical storm” has no deep convection.
-The “tropical storm” is heading toward a large batch of dry air.
-The “tropical storm” is heading toward a hostile upper low.

  16. WSBE- Channel 36, Rhode Island’s PBS station, will air “Wake of ’38”, the Emmy-award winning documentary about the Hurricane of 1938, tonight at 8 pm. It is shown every year about this time in September. For those who can’t see it or can’t get Channel 36, the documentary is on YouTube. Here’s the link:

    1. GIF .. It’s basically a 1 to 3 second “movie” expressing a reaction of one kind or another. They’re all over social media and have been for years now. If you Google it you’ll get a better description than I can give here, and examples.

Discord is another media platform where you can do pretty much everything, including run a blog and a chat. I’ve been toying with either having a version of this blog there or moving it entirely there at some point (not yet). And more likely it’d be a “version” of it – although it would be far better for interaction than what we can do here. Anyway, Discord is not “new”. It’s been around for a decade, and started out designed as an app for gamers, but has expanded into something quite more useful. My family and extended family use it and it’s by far the most dependable source of communicating out there.
