DAYS 1-5 (JULY 22-26)

A humid air mass has invaded our region as a warm front passed through late yesterday to early today with widespread rainfall including some heavier thunderstorms. That activity has now exited, and as low pressure passes to our north today, its cold front has to cross the region. While available moisture is there at the surface and solar heating will be present as the warm frontal clouds and areas of fog clear out, a push of drier air at mid levels will limit shower and thunderstorm coverage to generally isolated to scattered along a line pushing eastward through the region during the afternoon to early evening hours. An additional batch of showers may visit RI and southeastern MA later tonight / early Thursday morning as the front slows while exiting the region. After that, high pressure builds toward the region with a drier northwesterly breeze and nice summer weather on Thursday. High pressure then sits over our area from Friday through the weekend with stellar late July weather – lots of sun, low humidity, and daily coastal sea breezes.

TODAY: A first-thing-in-the-morning shower over Outer Cape Cod, otherwise lots of clouds and areas of fog give way to a sun/cloud mix. A shower or thunderstorm possible from west to east this afternoon to early evening. Highs 80-87 but a bit cooler South Coast. Dew point in 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts possible especially around any showers and storms.

TONIGHT: Lots of clouds southeastern MA & RI with a shower chance. Partly cloudy elsewhere. Lower elevation fog patches. Lows 61-68. Dew point lowers to near 60. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 79-86. Dew point in 50s. Wind W to NW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Interior low elevation fog patches. Lows 57-64. Dew point in 50s. Wind NW under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 78-85, coolest coast. Dew point in 50s. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.

    3. My rain monitor held at .99 inch when I went to bed at 10. Forgot to look this morning to see if any additional fell overnight.

      I got Wordle in 5. Not to give a clue, but was surprised as I don’t think of that as an American term. I though Wordle only used American English words?

  6. I posted late last night that baby horse has a name. My granddaughters younger sister has little interest in horses but is a huge Star Wars fan. I love that baby horses name is a tribute to her sister. He is obi-Wan Kenobi or Kenobi for short.

    First guess had one letter in incorrect position and last two letters in correct position. As JPD did, I don’t know the word so kept adding letters.

  12. Thanks TK! 2.07 inches of rain from the system. We have now had over 10 and a half inches of rain in my area for the month. That is impressive with over a week to go still in July.

      It is possible I heard that word before in a British movie or TV series, but I can’t be sure. As far as Wordle goes, I never heard of it before. NEVER in a million years would I come up with that
      word. It was only via letter substitution.

  18. Another note on the sensors. I never share an individual source without permission. Andy has given me permission. And he added a bit more info. It’s a pleasure chatting with him. He doesn’t know me from Adam and yet has been very helpful throughout the last few years.

    “…my head technician also told me that with a switchover to a slightly different temperature/humidity sensor unit in the last few years, the standard protocol is now every 18 months the entire unit is sent back for full recalibration, even if it’s still within tolerance. For Boston, that 18 months comes due in December. The previous temperature and humidity sensors were separate, so if one was out of calibration a simple swap with a working one was all that was needed. The combined unit makes it a little more difficult, because if one is out of tolerance, then the whole unit gets replaced. Hope that makes sense.

    moving Eastward is likely to pass “just” North of Boston.
    Will be monitoring for changes.

  28. We just had a few minutes with a little wind and very little rain. The sun is back now.

    In 20 minutes we went from 80/71 to 74/67.

  30. If I’m interpreting correctly, the late mid/long range on the 12z vs 00z GFS is fairly different.

    Since we’ve been in a pattern of avg/occasionally below avg temps and fairly troffy in the northeast, I tend to believe the 00z GFS more.

    The 12z gfs isn’t showing a major ridge, but it has much higher heights, a trof/closed low to our west and opportunities for a few days of 90F and higher humidity in the long range.

    Guess we’ll watch and see what future 00 and 12z runs bring.

  33. Updates…

    Weather/Sports: No changes. Eyeing the frontal boundary as it drifts across the region. Showers & storms are behaving about as expected. Sox game will be “official” before any interruption would arrive, but even one that occurs would be relatively brief. Go Sox! Hope they hold the lead in this first game and at least tie the record. I won’t say anything about the 2nd game until this one is done.

    My health update: I had a video visit with cardiologist this morning which went well. He explained by echocardiogram results and why surgical intervention with the mitral valve is the best option. I trust his opinion, and the surgeon agrees. I was then referred to a surgeon who I already heard back from and scheduled an appointment to go over details and a timeline (July 31). At that point we will decide when it will be and schedule it.

    My procedure is going to be minimally invasive mitral valve repair, or as my cardiologist called it, “bread & butter surgery” with a minimal incision and a relatively short recovery period.

    So now, it’s just a matter of going through the steps and seeing this to its conclusion, which will improve the function of the heart for many years to come and prevent future issues that would have developed much sooner and more seriously without intervention. I love our medical abilities. I wish our medical system was less broken, but at least I have a great team taking care of me. 🙂

    Heading up to Hampton soon for a visit / fireworks display. They will be a go this evening as the threat of any showers and storms ends there by the time the pyro company arrives. 🙂

    1. Good to hear that your health is headed in the right direction. i just went under the knife 3 weeks ago for a procedure that I knew was coming one day and it went well enough … happy to report.

    Last time the Red Sox did this was in 1946. I was just a kid then.

    I had no faith in the Red Sox a month ago. I should have injected a bit of TK’s attitude into my veins. He kept the faith.

    Please note, I never abandoned the Red Sox. They’ll always be the team I root for, win or lose.

    Decent t-storm at Woburn but we were kind of “in between” the initial storm that passed to my NW and the new line that formed on its outflow passing just to my S. A few CGs within 2.5 miles on both sides (W-N and S-E) as these went by. Briefly heavy rain and a bit of wind, but nothing outrageous. I’m heading to Hampton now!

    And JP Dave, I also loved hearing Curt Gowdy. He did some of the national radio play-by-play in 1986 when I was living overseas. I am a true Sox fanatic and listened to AFN (Armed Forces Network) on my tiny Sony transistor radio. The games were on at 2am to 5:30am local time (Netherlands). While I was thrilled when the Sox came back from 3 games to 1 down against the Angels to win the series, I was despondent hearing the Sox lose to the Mets in the World Series. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions. I basically didn’t sleep for a couple of weeks in October 1986. None of my Dutch friends understood why I was so tired and looked like a raccoon with circles under my eyes.

    AFN radio was fun to listen to. They had no commercials. So, to fill up the time, they’d do public service announcements targeting American servicemen and women. And sometimes, they’d relay interesting messages, like this: “Colonel Jim Armstrong, stationed at Ramstein, your wife would like you to call home. She says you told her you’d be driving to a bar in Kaiserslautern.”

        I hope for a decent 2 or 3 innings from the starter, then 5 strong from Bello and if you have a lead, see if that tall African American kid that’s had a break through year out of the bullpen and throws 102 could close it out.

        And send Whitlock and Chapman home before the game so you don’t overreach and use them again. 🙂

  48. Loads of rain specifically in my part of Hingham. Wherever the automatic gauge is in Hingham didn’t get the massive slug of rain around 4:20ish when we were having thunder and lightning. Wouldn’t be surprised if we got close to an inch during that time period. Now with the last fifteen minutes after a lull we’ve got over a quarter inch added to that total and still going.

  54. My commentary on the Red Sox: Awesome run! We knew it’d end at some point. No record broken, but record tied. Quite the accomplishment from a team that so many people gave up on (which I still don’t get, and never will, honestly).

    They’ll be approximately .500 at season’s end. I said it in April. I said it in June. I say it today. And I’ll remind you on the last day of the season.
