Wednesday September 2 2026 Forecast (7:29AM)

DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 2-6)

Most of the rain from this unsettled stretch fell yesterday, on the first of September. There was enough drying behind that disturbance for breaks in the clouds last night despite areas of low clouds and fog (which will dissipate this morning), and clouds can still break for sun at times during the day today. The next round of rainfall, the remains of an upstream storm complex, will pass through our region late tonight and be largely offshore by sunrise Thursday. That day, warmer, more humid air does get in, and with upper level low pressure overhead and a frontal boundary having been pushed north of the region but still having to sag back through to the south, we can see a few showers and thunderstorms that afternoon. Friday’s outlook is largely the same, with upper low pressure lingering and a chance of a pop-up shower, otherwise a drier, cooler trend. Labor Day Weekend’s first and second day are looking decent. I’ve backed-off on forecasting pop-up showers to more of a diurnal clouds sharing the sky with sun outlook, seasonable temperatures, and low humidity.

TODAY: More clouds than sun. Foggy areas early. Highs 66-73. Wind variable to E up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Showers likely, mainly overnight. Lows 56-63. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partial sunshine. A pop-up shower or thunderstorm possible in the afternoon. Highs 70-77. Wind SW up to 10 MPH, a few stronger gusts near any storms.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. A shower possible early, especially southeastern MA and RI. Lows 55-62. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Sun / cloud mix. A pop-up shower possible. Highs 73-80. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 53-60. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Sun / cloud mix. Highs 68-75. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 53-60. Wind N under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Sun / cloud mix. Highs 68-75. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (SEPTEMBER 7-11)

Labor Day (September 7) sees clouds increase ahead of an approaching frontal system from the northwest which then pushes through with clearing the following day. Next round of unsettled weather is eyed for later September 9 into September 10 with fair weather following. Temperatures somewhat variable, but no extremes indicated.

DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 12-16)

Up-and-down temperature pattern with a couple unsettled weather episodes with quick-passing systems heading into mid month.

  1. Swampscott got 0.14 of an inch throughout yesterday’s event. Enough to bring some plants back to life.

    Wordle in 3.

This system is a great example that even in a now, very strong EL Nino, a strong system can get cooked up very close to the shore.

I notice some obs not reporting near Beaumont TX, so the power is out and I’m not surprised. Winds were sustained at 40-50 mph, gusting to 70 mph.

I think this system probably surprised some in that area.

Also, it has held together remarkably well on its inland journey and is still producing some areas of torrential, flooding rains.

  3. Milwaukee public schools are closed today due to intense heat. If districts would have their schools start AFTER Labor Day then there wouldn’t be any need to close for heat issues. DUH! 😉

I just don’t get schools opening before Labor Day. I believe some around this state have been open for a couple weeks now.

As for Milwaukee, today is probably one less snow day available now. I assume they use plenty of them as it is.

      1. I did. Framingham started going before labor day earlier than most. I tried everything. And as you can imagine while I’m always polite. I don’t back down. And I didn’t do any good.

I’d say the reasoning is adding the holidays for other religions which I think is totally acceptable and snow days taking school late

My thoughts on those and I’m sure you know I’d have them. If there isn’t a huge population of folks celebrating other holidays, they give excused absences, no tests no homework for the next day

Snow days I have never done anything the last week of school nor of my children for most I know. That doesn’t mean I don’t think there are some teachers who are in fact teaching as normal for that last week. But I honestly don’t think we need 180 days.

I’ll go back to planning my Labor Day meals now 😉

  4. The ocean temperature at Boston Buoy is currently 68 F
here on September 2nd. As the days get shorter and the temperature grows cooler, the ocean temperature will slowly descend. I will continue to post that temperature every morning.

I wonder if it will ever get to the upper 30s this Winter
with El Nino. We shall see.

“Generally” speaking with sufficient cold air in place, an ocean temperature of 45 or lower will support snow, but each situation is different. With marginal temperatures and ocean temp in the 40s, it would be really tough to snow at the coast.

  5. This is just my opinion as an educator and I am NOT trying to change anyone’s opinion.

The 2-2.5 month off for summer break is counterproductive.

We ask so much more of our students now than we did in past generations. They are learning concepts earlier than we did at a deeper level of understanding, this is a great thing.

But we cram this intense 180 day experience into 9 months and it’s stressful, for both teachers and students. And I have to reteach so much prior stuff because students haven’t used what they learned the previous year in 2.5 months.

Summer break should be 4-5 weeks and the. Take those gained 5 weeks and add in or lengthen a few of the current traditional breaks.

The school year needs to be spread out so much more than the compressed stress ball it currently is.

    🙂

    1. I like that plan. It makes a lot of sense. One question. Which 4-5 summer weeks would be best knowing many schools don’t have AC

Oh and I’d get rid of standardized tests

    2. I understand what you are saying, but I am afraid I don’t agree.
Wouldn’t work for me. I HATED HATED HATED school so much we would not believe. I NEEDED that long break. Perhaps for others it would work out great. BTW, I never had trouble forgetting what I learned the previous school year. Learning came very easy for me. In fact I was BORED most of the time in school!! To each his own. Good luck changing it

      1. I had the same relationship with school that you had. I thought it was a social experience….

I also loved summer vacation for my kids.

But we’d still have the same number of vacation days. I thought a week was too short so might like those to be longer.

  6. Grade 6: I don’t envy you Tom. Best of luck! 😉

Just curious: Are you close to retirement age? I’m sure the Captain wouldn’t mind you joining the “club” if you will.

  7. Lindsay Clancy jury: Still DEADLOCKED (day 5)

Christian Gonzalez Negotiations: NONE anytime soon, if ever? 🙁

Does this mean next week the Patriots open the season with a 52 1/2 man roster? Lol.

    1. I don’t think Gonzalez will get signed. So what does that mean?
He is under contract, so he could hold out or play under that contract, but problem is: what do we get out of him

OR he gets traded for some draft picks and if we hit on draft pick and the player is good, we go through this all over again

      KRAFT IS CHEAP!!!

  8. On this date in 1935, the Labor Day Hurricane struck the Florida Keys, basically obliterating them, and then ravaged the western portion of Florida before a second landfall on the upper western coast.

It is the most powerful hurricane ever to make a direct landfall on the US.

  9. Hiiiiiiiiiiiii alllllllllllll…

Other than my previous post about the 1935 hurricane in FL, this is my check-in before I head up to Hampton Beach for the final Wed night fireworks show of the season.

Upon review of the latest weather info: No changes to forecast!

The short range guidance has backed off quite a bit on the duration and rain amount of the next system. Once upon a time it was depicted as a periodic rain and embedded heavier showers event from this afternoon through tomorrow morning. It’s now morphed on guidance into a less-than-six-hour bout of showers and maybe a t-storm, mainly after midnight to around sunrise. This may be followed by a few pop-up showers and storms as a cold front swings through tomorrow afternoon, but I think the latter will be isolated, while the overnight stuff that precedes it is more widespread.

Looking ahead, I outlined the pattern pretty well I think. We’re in a ripping NW flow for a while with a lot of muted ups and downs for temps, nothing overly hot, nothing overly chilly, and quick precip threats. Somewhere toward mid month the ridge residing in the central US may be shoved eastward giving us one last bout of above normal temps (borderline “hot”), but this has been a summer that other than a couple sharp spikes in temps in the first half of the summer, has not been particularly brutal. So, if we do get that it might be a bit much for some folks. But, climatology is on your side if that’s the case for you, because the daylights are much shorter and the sun angle is much lower than it was from late May through July. Just something that happens because of the planet we live on. 😉

I’ll have more to say about the upcoming pattern soon, which may contain my first hints at thoughts of the winter that lies ahead of us. In the mean time, have a great night!

  10. Thanks, TK.

Sox are again falling behind, and once more against a subpar team. They were able to come back against the woeful Giants during their 5-game winning streak 10 days ago. But as a team you can’t constantly be digging yourself a hole. Their lineup simply isn’t good enough to come back in many instances.

    1. I guess it helps that the Red Sox are 3rd in the league in come-from-behind wins this season, so digging themselves a hole hasn’t cost them as much as it might have. 😉

        1. Well, they’re not doing too badly for a “.500 team”. 😉

Made that prediction with confidence before the season’s first pitch and I stick by it.

I get that many fans were expecting them to go 162-0 with a record-setting string of no-hitters along the way, but … that’s not really how baseball works. 🙂

That reminds me, the Pats are going to start their quest for an undefeated season exactly one week from tonight! 😉

          1. If Christian Gonzalez isn’t signed, the Pats quest for another “4-win”season will be VERY much on the table!

Opposing QB’s are going to have a field day not seeing Gonzalez at his position.

            1. Again, I think he will not be signed this season. We shall see.

Kraft = CHEAP and he has trained his sons to be equally cheap. I would NEVER want to work for him. On top of cheap, he is deceitful.

    2. I’m worried about the Sox.

Injuries for one. Rutschman has missed multiple games and the update from Chad Tracy last night was not encouraging.

The bullpen has 2 important guys down.

The starters are 2 very young guys (Bennett and Tolle), a very avg 5th starter in Sandoval and the two top guys are showing signs of wearing down.

And your number 1 offensive threat is on the IL (Contreras)

Well, just don’t get swept in Baltimore and then you have the Angels at home for 3, so that’s a chance for at least 2 out of 3.

But yes, the Bob Lobel panic meter is ringing loudly.

  11. Rockies just helped the Sox out and beat the. Orioles.

Sox will stay with a 6 gm cushion over the Orioles, Rangers and Blue Jays for a wild card spot.

Another day off the calendar, we’ll take it !

  12. Tom, I share your concern about the Sox. They’re struggling mightily in areas I wouldn’t have expected: Pitching and defense. And they really are almost always behind in recent weeks, even in games they win.

I don’t worry about things I care less about, like the Patriots. But where I do really care, Sox and Bruins, my worry meter goes up.

    1. Red Sox have now lost 5 of last 6 games. They could very well be out of the WC after this weekend.

Assuming my calculations are correct of course.

Will 81-81 (.500) be enough for a postseason berth??

      1. It’s mathematically impossible that the Red Sox would be out of a wildcard spot by the end of this weekend. They are currently up 6 games on Texas and Baltimore in the wildcard standings with 22 games left to play. ESPN has their probability of making the playoffs right now at 97.5%. They would have to have a monumental implosion moving forward to not even make the playoffs.
