Snow Goes, Wind Blows

1:00 PM

As the snow (where there is still some) from our April Fools snowfall melts this weekend, it will do so as a gusty west to northwest wind blows between our departed storm over the Canadian Maritimes and a high pressure area sliding across the US East Coast. We will see mostly dry weather though, with just a fair amount of clouds and a few scattered instability rain or snow showers this afternoon. Sunday will be sunnier day.

An active April pattern will continue, however, next week. Expect at least a couple of system to cross the region with unsettled weather. Although the models will have trouble pinning down the timing. Best bets at the moment are to expect rain ahead of a warm front Monday, showers with a cold front Tuesday, and another low pressure system bringing a chance of some wet weather around Thursday.

Boston Area Forecast…

THIS AFTERNOON: Partly sunny. Isolated to scattered rain showers except rain or snow showers over higher elevations. High 49 to 54 but temperatures can drop several degrees quickly under any showers. Wind W 10 to 20 mph gusting to 25 mph.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy early. Clear late. Low 30 to 35. Wind W 10 to 20 mph gusting to 25 mph.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. High 48 to 53. Wind NW 10 to 20 mph gusting to 25 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds. Low 31 to 36. Wind NW diminishing to under 10 mph early, becoming calm around midnight, then SE under 10 mph toward dawn.

MONDAY: Cloudy. Chance of very light snow, sleet, and rain in the morning. Rain in the afternoon. High 40 to 45. Wind SE increasing to 10 to 20 mph, higher gusts especially along the coast.

TUESDAY: Rain showers likely. Low near 40. High near 55.

WEDNESDAY: AM sunshine. PM clouds. Low near 35. High near 50.

THURSDAY: Periods of rain possible. Low near 40. High near 50.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low near 35. High near 50.

    1. I’m not 100% confident in my timing of these things. As I just stated on WBZ’s blog, I’m going with a faster solution for now, resulting in an earlier frontal passage on Tuesday. This would pinch us off from getting the warmest air during the day, and make it wetter. If I’m underestimating the amplitude of the jet even a little, it will be slower, much warmer, and wetter late (with the threat of thunderstorms).

  1. Noting that the clouds are not having much trouble staying in streets (with clearer air between) and also developing vertically which leads to some minor convective shower development during the next couple hours. Tweaked the forecast to include these.

  2. Some beautiful cumulus clouds in the sky today. A few of them seem to be growing fairly tall. Nice early spring day.

    1. We were driving out the Mass Pike earlier and I couldn’t take my eyes off of the cumulus clouds – they were incredibly tall (I wasn’t driving:)

  3. the pressure is only 993mb, could lead to a few showers in the afternoon. already seeing heavy showers pop on on radar, however it’s a dry airmass.

  4. fast movers, just had overcast skies with a few rain drops(amazing with a 46% humidity) now have sun

  5. I hope the 12z GFS’s timing is wrong: Trouble for Fenway Opening Day. But that period is in the GFS’s blind spot, where it tends to do better earlier & later. I’m thinking that we see whatever is coming through here on Thursday on its way out by early Friday.

    1. Its nice to have another bruin fan on here. Just got back in from pruning a big pine tree, time to watch sports. Very nice day here in Pembroke sun is in and out and the wind is not to bad.

      1. You have on of the biggest Bruins fan in me, but I think my 10 and 7 year old sons are passing me.

  6. The 12z Euro supports the thinking/timing noted above. Mid morning cold frontal passage Tuesday. Next low pressure wave Thursday. We are getting into NW flow aloft which is good but surface high to the N opens the door for some ocean influence (clouds perhaps?) on Friday. Either way it may end up a chilly afternoon for baseball at Fenway, even if it’s dry. Plenty of time to fine-tune this.

    Bruins win! Yes!

        1. I loved today’s penalty shot!
I say go for more, but cautiously.

You rest too many key guys and they get rusty.

There are only 4 regular season games left. Use them as practice/tune up for the playoffs!

  7. TK, Joe on the WBZ blog mentioned a trough along with below normal temps between April 11-14th. Is there any “wintry” potential here or just typical cool, damp springlike conditions?

    1. There have been hints of one more potential mix/snow event in the April 10-14 period for a while but I’m not sure it will pan out. Can’t count it out. GFS shows ridge in the East by mid month. It may be a bit fast with the pattern change as it often is, but look for at least some warmer days mid-late April, not just climatologically, but the pattern itself. We have to watch for back-door fronts though as there will be a tendency for additional riding across eastern Canada. Sometimes these keep it fair but chilly, other times if low level moisture increases we end up with the ocean stratus/drizzle setups.

  8. The radar is littered with pop-up showers. Until TK’s forecast, I had no idea there would be so much instability today.

    1. I should have put it in their earlier, as I saw popping-cu in northern New England and Upstate NY this morning! That should have been the tip-off.

  9. One of those pop up showers just came through Marshfield. Sky grew dark, then turned gray with lots of virga, the wind gusted significantly and a light shower did fall. Northwestern horizon is now showing splashes of blue.

  10. Ok- quick post as you guys have me hooked- getting very dark here in Pembroke and the wind has picked up. Could there be a rain-delay in my back yard. Myself, my son and his buddy having a great game in back. Tk I agree.

  11. NWS point fcst has COLD FROPA Tuesday morning with high temp 54 for Woburn, showers before 1PM then dry. They’re already showing the next system in by Thursday with more showers. They keep showers in the fcst Friday but with luck things will move along before Game Time!

  12. Been on and off showers and dark clouds traveling east along the Pike today too. Just had another in Framingham. Blue sky now with darker sky yet again to the west.

  13. I love days with a sky like today’s. Nice sunset now!
I’m heading out to a “Final Four” party.
I think VCU comes back to win game 1.
    U Conn wins game 2.

I’ll update later tonight or 1st thing tomorrow morning…
    Have a great night everyone!

  14. TK. Ive been sitting on couch by our window facing west thinking the same think. It’s the kind of sky I love to watch

  15. Haterain- your welcome. Poison is the best way to do this as I’m sure you don’t want mouse traps all over your yard. You had me looking in my own yard. Glad I could help
and please feel free to ask anything, as I will answer any question. Not an expert but I have been in the landscape field along time. I hope you had a chance to check out that website.

    1. Not here Charlie {pembroke} was all melted by the end of the day yesterday. How did the planting of the tree go. I did not know you were a landscaper.

      1. Yes Im do Lawncare, I do not mow though, the cranberry tree went well, had to dig 3ft into the earth which was some work, also yes like I said yesterday I was in a void for snowfall, we got an inch then rain, and woke up to nothing on ground while everyone else was talking about 2 and 3 inch snow amounts, I’m dead serious I woke up and we had no snow, I was shocked!!! Anyways still won my bet of 6 inches or less,, as here we ended up with 6 inches since early Feb :), I’m sure up north got more, but it was what we got in Wrentham so it’s all good

        1. cranberry tree that’s nice, at least you had a nice day for digging. I was out in my yard earlier pruning a pine tree. While you are planting trees I am planning on taking down some. Yea that’s weird about the snow in your area. I was shocked to see it here. I saw some troll was looking for you on wbz the other day. It’s nice to post here without having to worry about some nasty response. I like your posts and I thought winter was over to.

    2. None in my neighborhood that I could tell other than a teeny bit in some extemely shaded areas up against houses. Early this morning quite a bit on grasses including my backyard. I suspect that tomorrow’s NERFC snow depth map will show all of SNE as bare ground. Much of NNE (especially Maine) is doing quite well with snow aplenty.

    3. Charlie I have a couple inches left in Pelham, NH. I got about 7 inches here. I am at about 370 feet. A little higher elevation than most in the area.

  16. I noticed on Barry’s 7-day that next Saturday looks quite cold with a high of 45. Perhaps this is the beginning of the next “cool” wave that Joe spoke of in his blog this morning (April 11-14)? Actually NWS has us warm & wet next weekend. We will see.

  17. Hey everyone. Well VCU cinderella run is over after their loss to Butler. The next game hopefully will be exciting. I am still keeping an eye on Tuesday but at the moment it seems to me the cold front will come in the morning and we won’t be up in the 60s and I don’t think the chances of thunder has decreased.

  18. I tell ya, I can’t wait for August when the Patriots r back, let’s just hope they get this bargaining deal done

    1. My good friend passed on his season tickets. He is thinking they may miss the first 5 games. There will not be players this year to replace them either like the last time. The players are asking to see the books and owners won’t let them, what does that tell you.

  19. I am not nervous yet over this lockout but come August if a deal is not done then I will get a little worried and I don’t want to see any games missed since I am huge football fan.

    1. Me to- football is my favorite sport I would be upset if the season was cut short, or not played.

  20. Just my opinion: I think we should still support WBZ’s blog. I totally understand if people don’t want to post as much, or at all. I’m not going to stop posting because of a bully. Barry & the rest of the TV mets there have no way to stop what’s going on thanks to the corporate garbage that controls too many things. It’s that thinking that has destroyed the blog just as much as the bully that is in there, because the setup they wanted allows him to be there and relentlessly post his garbage. It’s really too bad. But I’m going to continue to support WBZ, because it’s not their fault. Barry invited me there and I’m staying there. 🙂

    1. The reason why I don’t blog on there site anymore is cause this site is better 🙂
