Wet Warm Winter Wind

9:21AM

A strong low pressure area will track well west and north of New England today and tonight, dragging lots of warm and modified tropical air northward, and resulting in a period of wet, windy, warm weather for January. The pockets of cold air trapped near the ground that resulted in some pockets of freezing drizzle and freezing rain showers from overnight into this morning are now being obliterated by an increasing southerly wind bringing the warm air in. These winds will increase through the day and will gust to and over 40 MPH, maybe to around 50 MPH in some coastal areas and higher elevations, with scattered wind damage and power outages possible. This warm stormy period will also coincide with the NFL Playoff game between the Patriots and Colts, as mentioned before, which will make for somewhat adverse playing and spectating conditions. All of the rain gets pushed out and away by or shortly after midnight as a cold front sweeps through. The air behind this front is not that cold, and it will only be slightly cooler on Sunday, but bright and very breezy.

As we get into next week, a transition back to colder weather will get underway, though there are some uncertainties as to the details of this. My current best guess is that we’ll have a fair and very mild Monday, wet and slightly cooler Tuesday (still warm enough for rain), colder day Wednesday with a follow up disturbance bringing a chance of rain or snow showers to the South Coast and snow showers elsewhere, a chilly but dry Thursday, then another disturbance bringing a chance of snow showers Friday. A shot of very cold air looks like it may be about a week away (stay tuned for more on this possibility but uncertainty).

Forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

TODAY: Cloudy. Areas of fog. Periods of rain showers becoming more frequent with time.Β  Chance of thunderstorms especially later in the day. Temperatures rising from the 30s through the 40s inland valleys, 40s to 50s elsewhere. Wind S to SW increasing to 15-25 MPH with gusts 30-40 MPH except 40-50 MPH along some coastal areas and in higher elevations, especially later in the day.

TONIGHT: Cloudy with numerous showers, some heavy, and a chance of thunderstorms, ending west to east a couple hours either side of midnight. Clearing west to east by dawn. Temperatures in the 50s to near 60 to start then falling back into the 40s overnight. Wind S to SW 15-30 MPH gusting 35-50 MPH, strongest in coastal areas and higher elevations, shifting to W and diminishing to 10-25 MPH with higher gusts overnight.

SUNDAY: Sunny. Temperatures steady in the 40s. Wind W 15-25 MPH with gusts over 30 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 35. High 50.

TUESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain. Low 38. High 45.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain and snow showers. Low 32. High 40.

  1. Thanks tk πŸ™‚
    Go Patriots!!

There r people already tailgating at Gillette even though there suppose to start before 4pm. I guess playoff games r different. I also heard from a news station that there is a less than 15% chance that it will be actually snowing during the actual Super Bowl game, watch it be in the 50’s and sunny lol good day all πŸ™‚

      1. I asked a group, they said they traveled from Pennsylvania, I asked them where they were from originally thinking New England, NOPE, lol never lived in New England, there from Tennessee.

  2. Charlie it may very well be in the 50s and sunny since the Almanac is predicting a intense storm with heavy rain and snow. As I always say the opposite will happen what the Almanac predicts will happen. I am thinking a seasonable dry day for the Super Bowl with highs around 40 and no weather issues.

  3. Thanks TK.

Hoping for some time to sit by an outside fire tomorrow or Monday evening.

Roads and walks ways were a sheet of ice here this morning. First time this year our rd has been salted.

    1. That cold air held strong at ground level far longer than I thought. It surprised me. But now it’s pretty much all wiped out.

  4. As of 10AM, 33 in Orange, 52 at Worcester. Can you find valley versus hill? πŸ™‚

Also, Chester CT’s ob is messed up. Temp 55. Dewpoint -42. RH at 1%. Oops!

    1. The wind for much of the game should be basically blowing toward the direction you are looking in that photo (if you were here looking as if you were taking the photo the wind would be at your back). Of course it will swirl around on the field, so the true direction does not have exclusive impact.

  5. The consistency with the GFS is awful …. and this is only for 4-5 days out.

Yesterday’s 12z had a surface reflection just SE of Cape Cod
Overnight’s 0z run …. No surface reflection SE of Cape
    Today’s 12z run …. Its back.

Make up your mind ! (exasperation symbol)

    1. It’s having issues resolving short wave energy and figuring out which, if any, become a prominent low. Even the Euro is a little iffy, though not as much. That is the base foundation of my lower confidence forecast for midweek. Hopefully guidance gets a bit more in gear tomorrow.

    1. Geez that stinks, even if it didn’t rain, and it was just 50 degrees out would be much better than that heavy rain, hockey and rain don’t go together well

  6. Arod suspended for 2014 entire season. Nothing worse than a person who lies right to your face. I’m glad he won’t be around. It’s all good till they get caught and than its like me do that oh never. Scumbag.

    1. It was reduced from 211 to 162 or was it 165. IMHO he should be out. Not one record should stand now or ever

      1. What’s ticks me off is he clearly got caught and instead of being a real man and say yes I screwed up and I accept responsibility for my actions. But no had to have press conference more than once and lie to everybody on live tv. I have 0 respect for people like that. He is a looser and I hope he never returns. And I also agree any records should be removed. Enough said. Wind is picking up here big time.

  7. Its 162 games which also includes the postseason. I never thought A Rod would get 211 games. I thought it was going to be 100 games. Oh well I was only off 62 games.
Yankees won’t say it but there happy 25 million dollars is off the books this season. He will appeal this but I don’t see this getting over turned.

  8. It’s going to be tough conditions for the game. I’m guessing the edge goes to the outdoor team vs the dome team.

  9. Just had a couple flashes of lightning and some rumbles out my window here in Watertown, CT. Rain really coming down hard now but the winds are not gusting.

  10. Out ay legacy place dedham.
Wind picking up. Has to be gusting well
    Into the 30’s. Temp 56 – 57.

  11. Wow!!! This is Definatley going to effect both offenses especially the passing game, it’s very gusty here,, Go Patriots!!

  12. Something tells me I should have stuck with my “chance of snow Thursday” part of the forecast….. You question yourself constantly with a low confidence forecast.

  13. Thunder with downpours and streetlights now on in Dorchester.

I don’t mind a respite from the arctic cold every now and then, but I don’t want a July pattern in early January…UGH! πŸ™

  14. Think I’ll disconnect my antennas just in case πŸ˜‰ Seems like most of the nasty stuff is staying west of my location but I doubt that will stay that way all afternoon and evening.

  15. Thunder and lightning here in JP as well. One vicious bolt lit up the whole house.
It is like midnight dark in here.

  16. A couple friends are at the Frozen Fenway game between UMass Lowell & BU (one alum from each school that I know, at least).

They have a rain/lightning delay with over 1/2 inch of water on the ice surface.

How often do you see a hockey game delayed by rain, or lightning? πŸ˜›

      1. Well, it will certainly be memorable. There’s always something positive to look at.

My first Red Sox game was never played the day we went. It poured. But I did get to witness Rick Dempsey’s vaudeville tarp sliding act. πŸ˜‰

    1. Good contrast in air masses and instability in the right spot. It’s all relative. May happen more frequently in the warm season but once in a while it all lines up in the cold season too.

      1. You got the brunt of that one along with Hadi and OS. I am just at .19 here and .09 was before that one.

        1. We were .07 before. And even with the intensity of the rain I was surprised. Looks like a hole now. Mac has grill duty. Not as bad as tom the other night though. Picked up some marinated tips at a small, corner market in wellesley. They get rave reviews. Am anxious to try them. Then on to munchies for the game

          Go pats. πŸ˜€

            1. Oh noooooo. She’ll miss first part of game. And we never eat this early. But we have to leave time to make room for the munchies later πŸ™‚

  17. Best darn steak tips we have ever had. Anyone near fells market wellesley I’d recommend stopping

And following this commercial break…..now back to weather in your area πŸ˜‰

    1. I had to chuckle that somebody declared “winter over!” on the WBZ blog. Must be the owner of a retail store. Summer clothes are out!

  18. Just took the dog out before the heaviest rain arrived. To bad she wanted to stay out and now am drenched πŸ™‚

  19. The heaviest will be DONE at the stadium before the game starts. Not rain-free, but the worst will have gone by.

  20. I’ve been a train wreck since 6 am. This particular game makes me very uneasy. I hope for once the Pats get way out in front. I don’t know if I can take another come from behind tilt.

    1. Longshot I am thinking positive but just realized I’m as nervous as a new bride….or grandma to be…whatever the description.

  21. Just received 1/2″ of rain in a very short amount of time. How has the recent temperatures effects the run off of all this rain? It is mushy in places but you can feel the hardness of the frost.

        1. No chance john. I would have bet the under too, but with the weather magically improving and points being tossed around, i think they hit 52 by halftime

  22. I am never happy when we are ahead at the half. Yes I know I’m repeating myself. Bit then I am a nervous wreck. Positive thoughts. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  23. Four rushing touchdowns in a league that is pass happy is impressive. Well played game by pats tonight. I figure they probably planned on a run attack with the projected forcast. Forcast changed but running game worked. This game is done. Nice job.

  24. Author John Green called them the “New Suckland Sucktriots” on his FB page.

    Classy public post. πŸ˜‰

Even some of the Colts fans were a little unhappy.

I just told him to “Enjoy the last Colts game of the season.” πŸ™‚

  25. I have no idea if the Patriots will win or lose next week, but there is one thing that I do know.

This is an impressive, well coached team, that is going further than I expected. No matter what happens from here, this season is a win in my opinion.

We’ll find out the opponent in a handful of hours.

    1. TK I so agree. I thought it was a win two weeks ago. This and anything more is simply icing on the cake. I know fans of other teams won’t get that but what a season we have had.

      1. Agree Tom. Nice game. Who would have thought Brady would not throw for one touchdown. Blount is a fan favorite right now as he had two huge back to back games.

        1. The Pats are getting rewarded for fighting thru all the injuries all year …..

They suddenly have a punishing running game and the hold your breath defense has Jamie Collins and the rookie corner Ryan at least making a few plays here and there.

The Pats seem to be playing their best at the right time.

  26. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

To determine your distance in miles from a thunderbolt, count the seconds from the flash to the thunder and …

    A. Multiply by 5 seconds
    B. Divide by 5 seconds
    C. Add 5 seconds
    D. Nothing, just count the seconds

    Answer later today.

      1. I haven’t been on top of much lately. My mother died a few days before Xmas and I have not kept up wit much since. Trying to get back on track.

        Nice win by Pats.

        1. How heartbreaking. I am so very sorry. Whenever you have the time to post quizzes, it is appreciated but certainly not expected. Right now though I am sure your heart just isn’t in it. My warmest thoughts to you and your family

        2. Longshot – My prayers and thoughts are with your family. I know the feeling as I lost my mother a few wks. ago.
