Sunday Forecast

8:22AM

DAYS 1-5 (MARCH 13-17)…
A short update as not much has changed in the overall thinking of the pattern. Just a few adjustments, especially to temperature forecasts, which always give me trouble this time of year…
TODAY: Lots of high clouds filter the sun this morning. Less high clouds allow brighter sun this afternoon. Highs in the 50s. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Clouds return and then thicken overnight. Lows upper 20s to middle 30s. Wind light NE.
MONDAY: Cloudy. Rain develops mid to late afternoon from southwest to northeast, may start as a mix of sleet and snow especially higher elevations of north central MA and southwestern NH. Highs upper 30s to middle 40s. Wind NE to E 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Overcast with rain. Temperatures steady upper 30s to middle 40s. Wind E 10-20 MPH, strongest near the coast with higher gusts.
TUESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain in the morning. Spotty mist afternoon. Highs in the 40s. Wind E to NE 10-20 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Lows 35-45. Highs in the 50s.
THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Lows 35-45. Highs in the 50s.

DAYS 6-10 (MARCH 18-22)…
Fair and colder March 18-19. Unsettled with variable temperatures March 20-22 with rain/mix/snow all possible.

DAYS 11-15 (MARCH 23-27)…
Temperatures variable, near to slightly below normal overall, with an unsettled pattern bringing a couple of precipitation threats (no change to yesterday’s outlook here – just too much uncertainty this far out at this time).

  1. Storm threat would be 21 into 22? How does 23rd look? I know it is far out and nothing is close to certain but appreciate your input. Thank you.

    1. Quickly back to milder by then I think. May be a rain shower threat but that may also be off by a day and be later.

  2. Thanks, TK…

TK, you have proven yourself time and time again to be an outstanding predictor and forecaster of the weather.

I was wondering how are you with college basketball. Can you help me predict the winners on my brackets???? HaHaHaHa!!!!

Hope everyone is well in the WHW family and have a great Sunday and week, whatever time it is…

  3. Thanks TK. Looks pretty miserable Monday-Tuesday. Really much of the rest of the month looks unsettled. That time of the year though I guess.

    1. Within a cooler and more unsettled pattern we’ll still have some decent days…

There is a possibility that portions of both Wednesday and Thursday turn out rather mild and rain-free. We also have some great weather around next Saturday as high pressure comes overhead. After a down-turn right around the Equinox we may bounce back to milder a few days later. The pattern will still be somewhat progressive even with a mean trough dropping into the Midwest and East.

  4. The Great Lakes ice coverage is now less than 10% my thoughts are this could lead to a warmer spring except when cloudy cool drizzly east winds are present. Last night about seven while walking the dogs could here the peepers, I’m down here near PVD airport. Any thoughts? Have a great day love the blog.

    1. I’d think that there will be a little less cooling of air coming across the lakes and that should have at least a minor impact on air masses entering the Northeast via the Great Lakes.

  5. There is no dominant team in college basketball this year. We had a lot of different number one ranked teams this year. In conference tournaments so far only 3 number one seeds have on their conference tournament. I think Kansas or Michigan State will win it this year. Hopefully I do better with my brackets than I did last year.

  6. Just went to check the Euro and no update yet….darn daylight savings time!

Definitely looks like something is brewing about a week from today. Both the GFS and euro have a fairly sizable system. Earlier start/warmer solution on the Euro while the GFS lags the storm by a day and has a colder solution. Bears watching for sure.

  7. I remember the Superstorm of 93 quite well. Storm was on a Saturday and first big snowfall I could remember in my life. I was 8 years old at the time. The snow was up close to my knee caps. A few days prior Geoff Fox who was a weather forecaster at WTNH here in CT at the time said a few days prior the big khuna is coming Saturday and it did.

  8. It appears the storm on 21/22 March could be rather strong, if I am interpreting the models correctly. Could see a lot of heavy, wet snow to the north and west of the low, which at this time favors Northern NY state. Adirondacks could get their biggest snowstorm of the season.

If I can venture a guess Boston and all coastal areas will see rain from the equinox system. JJ, Mark, and other interior dwellers could see some snow and mix. Regardless of what happens a week from now much needed rain appears to be in the forecast throughout the remainder of this month. As TK said, the systems are progressive which would allow for sunny breaks and a few nice days here and there, but rain, clouds, and 40s will likely be a theme as we close out the month.

  9. 12z Euro is further east with the storm threat next Sunday with some coastal redevelopment and a low track near NYC. Not as cold though and not as much of an inland snow producer as the GFS and CMC solutions that JJ posted but still some decent accumulation for the mountains. Going to be a close call. And plenty of time for this to shift as we are still a week out.

  10. 32 years ago today a fairly major snowstorm. We had between 10-12 inches. The bigger storm was yet to come that year

    1. Never forget it, my 30th bday, big surprise party plans were interrupted… Went to Rockport in the day for a sauna (Swedish guys place we used to go to…) and barely made it home… One intense storm!

    1. Tjammer, I have not seen any around my area just yet, but have seen plenty of Larvae in the marsh water, the reasoning is that most water ways especially in eastern mass didn’t go below 20 water , which is when only the strongest of mosquito nests survive. So the weaker nests survived this winter, it took till mid to late april to see my first mosquito’s last year, I am honestly concerned about mosquito diseases,

  11. JPD had our walk through the new house today. There is a pond at the end of the street and I saw several men fishing. You will have to come visit 🙂

    1. Says they have Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Chain Pickerel

But another pond around the corner has a larger variety

  12. March 1984 was active. The biggest one (for most) came on Thursday March 29. Powerful east to northeast wind, 8 to 12 inches of snow in about 6 hours in much of eastern MA. Cloud-to-ground lightning during the height of the storm including a few lightning strikes on houses during very heavy snow bands.

    1. Tons of power outages also. Rivaled the Halloween blizzard. Sap was running. All I could hear was the sound of cracking and falling limbs in the woods and line arcing. Same for both storms. Heavy….wet snow. And yep in of the ones I had the pleasure to see thunder lightening snow

  13. I just looked at water temps they continue to rise ranging from 40-42 degrees mass nh border, to 43-44 east of mass too 45-47 south of ape and ri

  14. Wow! Amazing the ocean temps are rising that much in response to the mild weather.

    Boston Buoy: 43.9
    Stellwagen: 42.8

  15. Finally on Spring break, Basically no life besides for school, but now today, Was able to do some driving up on the north shore along the coast with windows down with the nice sea air, probably one of the best drives I have done yet.

I went biking as well, shorts and T-shirts…….

looking at weather models now, I wonder if old man winter is going to be throwing a giant punch before heading on out.

  16. This Wednesday nights will be 1 min shorter than daylight, starting Thursday daylight will be 2 minutes longer than nighttime lllllllllll

    1. Sorry meant to say nighttime will be 1 min longer, then Thursday nighttime will be 2 minutes shorter than daytime.

  17. Big shift east on the 0z Euro! Shows a potent nor’easter moving up the coast Sunday/Monday and is actually a bit further east now than the 0z GFS. Delivers at least some snow accumulation for a good portion of SNE and 6″+ from NW CT to northern Worcester county. Foot plus with blizzard conditions for much of VT and interior NH and ME.

  18. I could hear a lot of moaning and groaning if that happens first day of spring.
I will have the opposite reaction and be very happy.
